It's not just about the money / economy.  Biology plays a part.

Say the virus wins, and the world opens up and we throw the elderly to the wolves, as you suggest.

The virus can mutate into Covid 20, Covid 21, Covid 22, Covid 23, in the elderly.

Can you tell me what Covid 21 looks like?  Perhaps Covid 21 kills all the children.

Can you tell me what Covid 23 looks like?  Perhaps Covid 23 kills everyone.

It's important that humanity quarantines and isolates, which in turn isolates the virus, this stopping it from replicating and mutating into something that could wipe out billions.

Quarantine the elderly and vulnerable like we always do,not billions of people that don`t get affected by it(other than loosing their livelyhood).

    I doubt that.

Health departments all around the world would collapse, most likely causing protests and riots.

The army of the various countries around the would would be digging mass graves.

Young family members would be infecting their elderly relatives and killing them.

    Not going to happen.

Better to slowly bring our society slowly back to the pre-industrial age then, sounds like an good idea !

Actually they have not been operating normally anywhere and most ports will not even allow entry of tourist type vessels.  Air and ship travel is not safe in a pandemic period.  At best you can limit the danger.

Cruiseships and passenger ships between countries have of course been in the same situation as air travel.

But in many countries you do have passenger ships operating within the borders and those have been operating as normal despite the pandemic, same as this route will do.

It wouldn't need to be another pandemic, just the same pandemic with the virus mutating so that the current vaccine no longer is effective, and then the world goes back to square one  (March 2020) and it all starts again.

And by then hopefully our various goverments would decide to let life go on as normal ????.

So many people come undone here in south east asia they believe they can just go abroad set up shop and crack on

Was once told on good authority here in Asia if you are caught here selling narcotics its highly likely you will leave in a body bag

Thats a big exaggeration. Most people walk out alive after a jail sentence in Thailand. Not so easy in Malaysia and Singapore.

Some odd snippets to go on the forum whilst we are waiting for better times/or not, although there's not a lot happening around the place, I did notice that the little bar/restaurant in Nanai called "Pen and Franks Cocktails" which has been there for ever and usually shut down in the low season, was today being emptied out of all its furniture and fittings, so I fear the worst for that Nanai icon.

Yet at the same time, and just north a few metres, and on the opposite side of the road, a bar has sprung up in what was formerly a nice little restaurant called, "Backside Bistro", and it doesn't look like an eatery at the moment, but who knows, and if it is just a pure drinking establishment, then it is right next to the "Longtime Bar" (possibly the same owner??) so that will be interesting.

Last week, just about all of the bars shut around midnight, give or take 15 minutes or so, so it will be interesting to see happens this evening when I wander out to catch up with a couple of friends.

I had to have a wry smile this afternoon in Big C when they were blurting out Chinese music (Chinese New Year or thereabouts?) with no more than a handful of customers in the place at the most, and not one of them looked anything like he/she had Chinese heritage! Perhaps they were hoping for a few busloads to turn up from Bangkok?

The shops on the left hand side of what was called the middle road, have started to be demolished, either that or they are falling down of their own volition and the place looks a complete mess.

Just behind that and just inside of Soi Sansabai is where a new bar was constructed (and a double one at that) which was supposed to be the first bar to herald the start of the new construction of bars on a very large space of flat and empty ground, one to rival Bangla by all accounts, but after a couple of months, it appears to have closed, or at least it has moved to what used to be called "Wicked Bar".

Not surprising really because just one bar on a huge flat empty piece of ground, stuck out like the proverbial racing dogs' goolies and was hardly going to be a crowd puller (in my opinion).

I have spoken to a couple of farangs who have managed to come back in from  overseas and have completed the 15 day quarantine, with one saying that it was awful, and the other saying that the food and service in the hotel in Bangkok was very poor, so he complained and was upgraded, and from then on enjoyed a big room and great food!

Looks like the secret is to complain!

Regarding "Pen and Frank`s" it says on their FB page that they will reopen when the incertainty with covid 19 is gone.

Lets hope so.This is a gem of a restaurant  I used to frequent a lot when staying in Patong with generous and friendly owners.Best of luck to them.

Lots more wildlife around and on the islands.

The good - whales, dolphins, turtles, sting rays, monitor lizards, squirrels etc.

The not so good - snakes, snakes and more snakes. (They are OK really!)

Been coming to Thailand for nearly 30 years and at one time used to live here in the forrest south in Phuket, but so far I have only seen snakes only 3 times .I must have some natural snake repellent built in me.

Great to see that wildlife is starting to flourish again ???? !

I can't tell if you're trolling or serious:

Here's the link I produced which is a detailed article why those claims about polar bear increase can't be trusted:

    https://www.sej.org/publications/alaska-and-hawaii/magic-number-a-sketchy-fact-about-polar-bears-keeps-goingand-going-an

The above links to something called evidence.

    What do you call it?

What makes your contention even odder is that you "liked" an article referenced by vocalneal that debunked the claim that research shows that polar bear numbers are going up. I'm hoping for your sake that the reason you, Kelsall, and ExpatOK liked it is because you all didn't read it. Otherwise, that would be sad. Here's that link again:

     https://polarbearsinternational.org/research/research-qa/are-polar-bear-populations-increasing-in-fact-booming/

It also links to something called evidence.

    What do you call it?

The fact is that polar bears numbers have increased as a whole, but with differences in certain areas of the Arctic.

Same as with the melting of the ice in the Arctic : In some areas it has increased and in some areas there are no change that can be observed as an regular occurence.

    And thats a fact.

Clearly, you didn't read the article. Here's the very first answer in the article:

"One of the most frequent myths we hear about polar bears is that their numbers are increasing and have, in fact, more than doubled over the past thirty years. Tales about how many polar bears there used to be (with claims as low as 5,000 in the 1960s) are undocumented, but cited over and over again. Yet no one I know can come up with a legitimate source for these numbers.*"

There's also a reference to this article:

Magic Number: a Sketchy "Fact" About Polar Bears Keeps Going...And Going... And Going

    https://www.sej.org/publications/alaska-and-hawaii/magic-number-a-sketchy-fact-about-polar-bears-keeps-goingand-going-an

So the article is saying that polar bears are doing just fine.Thats what I`ve always said too !
