So, after 15 years of extending your permission to stay, you receive a call that Immigration wants to drop by and say hello. You should have been pleased, as you obviously have nothing to hide. As for the lunch invitation, you should have said "Why not, I love Thai food". Presuming, of course, after 15 years, you can speak basic Thai? Better to be sociable with these guys than the other way. I'm sure you could have footed the bill for lunch,it would have gone down well

Do this and the once every 15 years visit becomes yearly and paying for lunch becomes the norm and more and more is expected each time.

By all means offer them nice refreshments and be hospitable and polite, but keep the relationship professional.

According to info on their web site you can submit your visa application up to 1500 and pick up visa the next afternoon.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks.  I saw this on the website and it implies that applications can be made in the afternoon.  This is both supported and contradicted by posts in this thread, so I am a bit confused!

  3. Got a non o based on marriage a couple of weeks ago in London, no financial requirements.

Strangely, if you want your passport posted to you, you have to post it in - if you go in person to apply they cannot post it, you have to pick it up.  I was at the counter about to hand in my application and asked if I could pay the extra money and have it posted to me (don't live in London, was just passing through) but was told no, so I had to go away and  post it!

Posted it on a Saturday and received it on the following Thursday.

My friend has a problem, how many times is that one posted?

If anybody is on nine years overstay, they deserve a stay in theI IDC.

It shows a total disregard for the law, total lack of respect for Thailand.

Many things here are not to our liking, but as we chose to live here, we have to put up with them.

I will never understand why people automatically assume that when someone ask a question for a friend, they are really asking the question for themselves.  The OP is anonymous <deleted>!  The name of Bluebird279 is tarnished forever!  Why would he care?  Why bother questioning it?

Actually, it might be a tactic to avoid the sanctimonious rantings that inevitably get posted on threads like this.

If you apply at the embassy in London you do not need any financial proof to get the multiple entry non-o based upon marriage.

The info on the embassy website (same for Hull) is not correct.

Is this still the case?  I checked the embassy website and it still hasn't been changed.  Are there any reports of people getting visas without financials?

Thanks for all of the replies.  I'm currently already amidst the '15th month' route and it is expiring May 6th.  I'll be looking to start a fresh Non-IMM O visa (married, previous visa was an IMM-B with work permit.  WP has since expired.)

I emailed the embassy and this is what they replied:

I'm still a bit confused by what '1 working day'.  For example, if I submit it in the morning of a Monday, will I pick it up the next day, Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday afternoon?  I suspect the answer is Tuesday but I don't know for sure and the embassy has not replied to my response asking for clarification.

Thanks for all of your insight and help.

Couldn't you stretch it to 17 months by getting an extension of 2 months on the final entry by going to immigration with the wife?

  7. Got back from Savannakhet last week and can confirm that multi non o (marriage) still available without financial proof.

I submitted the following copies: Marriage Cert, House book, Wife's ID card, Name change Cert (not sure if needed) and had to show original.  No copy of my Lao visa was asked for or submitted.

Stayed at Hop Inn in Mukdahan.  Not bad, cheap, clean and near the bus station.  Got the 8am bus at the station and was at the consulate at 940am, after walking from the Savannakhet bus station (10-15min).  Queued up for about 5 mins before submitting my docs and paying which took about 1 minute.

In Lao I stayed at Avalon Residence.  Not bad, clean and well located.

Nothing much to do in Savannakhet.  Can recommend 'Lin's Cafe'.  Not the cheapest place but it is very nicely appointed and has aircon and wifi and right next to the night market.  Generous servings and tasty.  Paid 200 baht for an English Breakfast.  The accept and give change in baht too.

Overall, very easy but boring trip.  Take a book.

  8. Do you people really live with so much fear and paranoia?

I wouldn't say it's paranoia to be prepared for a worst case scenario. It may be very unlikely that you have to defend yourself at home, but it really doesn't cost much to get some kind of protection, so why not?

I have been a driver for over 20 years and have never once been in an accident where I have needed my seat belt. I still fasten it every time I drive, doesn't make me paranoid.

Frankly, anyone who doesn't have some kind of weapon at home (golf club, baseball bat etc) is a fool.

  9. You will find that these ovens will make your electric bill go sky high. A better choice is a turbo cooker, very fast, very efficient or a Samsung micro wave with convection, I have all three plus a gas stove with oven, the turbo cooker wins hands down, great for roast and of course a roasted chicken.

    good luck in your choice.

Or a gas cooker if you live in a house - gas is so cheap here.

  10. The OP sounds like a bundle of laughs to hang out with!

The couple in question may well have been a bit crass, but ther observation is a valid one. Disabled (can I still say that? physically challenged?) people are not nearly as visible as in many other countries.

  11. I just got back from there. I got the 1 year multiple entry visa. They DID ask to see the original marriage certificate for a minute for a quick glance. Also the processing times was 2 days not 1.

The visa is issued the next day isn't it?

You pickup your passport the next afternoon after the day you apply.

    Thanks Joe.

Also, to those who were speculating whether the Nok Air flight arrives early enough to get to the consulate in time, you could buy a flexi fare on the return flight where you would be able to change the date for free if you didn't manage to submit the application on time. Alternatively, you could wait till you get back to Mukkdahan before booking the return flight.

I certainly wouldn't want to spend anymore time in Savannakhet than needed.
