  1. On the basis of 30 days in an 45 out you should not have a problem.........

well you might on your third entry........... :bah

Get a Non Imm O multi-entry visa based on marriage and son, and you will be fine.

Depending on where you apply you may have to show 400K baht (US$20,000) in a bank account overseas.

The bank account is no problem, but why would/could a third entry be a problem? I know when i enter on my 30 day visa they go beck through the passport and count up every day in the last 6 months, but i was hoping to avoid that with the O visa

  2. I checked out cars from Mitzubishi, Honda, Nissan and Ford. Didn't try toyota because i don't want to be driving next years taxi! The Mitz and Honda were both very nice but not too dissimilar to the Ford. I chose the Ford Focus in the end because they offered me a 70,000 Baht discount if i paid in cash. Most important consideration is how much grief you will get from your wife if you get a car other than the one she choses, because every time it goes wrong she will say, "the car i wanted would have been fine"!

  3. Hi,

I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and in all that time i have been using the 30 day tourist visas. I manage this because i commute to the middle east on a rotation of approx 30 days in country and 45 out. I am considering getting an O-marriage Visa, (i think that's the right one), just to save any hassle if i over stay. Also i believe after 3 years of O visas i can apply for a more important one.

Can anyone give me any facts/advice on getting this visa and whether i am eligable considering i leave the country for 45 days at a time.

I have a UK passport, i'm 40 years old, have a thai wife and 1 son if any of that is relevant.

    Thanks,

    Nidge.

  4. I bought a new house 6 months ago, (in issan), since then nearly all the remaining units in the complex have been sold. Perhaps the market is slowing in Bangkok and Pattaya because people are realising how much cheaper it is to buy elsewhere.

  5. I lived in bangkok and had various apartments ranging from 18k to 35k per month and even the cheapest one was very nice. Why do you need to pay 30K for an apartment?

There are also 2 points that i think have not been covered in this thread...

1, many people have said look where you want to be in 5 years. But also you need to look at where you are going to be in 5 years if you carry on like you are.

2, you think you should be getting more money for doing your job, the question only you can answer is, are you actually any good? Perhaps you have not had the payrise because your not pulling your wait. Only a thought :o

  6. i just got hospital/accident insurance from Siam Commercial Bank. It's not very good but better than nothing. It cost me 13500 Baht for 5 years cover. Health care is not so expensive in Thailand, (unless you have a serious accident/illness), so paying a lot for insurance seems overkil for me although i must add i'm interested in hearing more about QBE.

  7. I think it is actually illegal in the UK to transfer money outside of the country via internet. I treid to do it a couple of years ago while i still had a UK bank and i am 95% positive i read somewhere on the banks website. (BTW this does not apply to offshore accounts). The website was for Barclays bank and i'm sorry i can't give more precise information but i try to keep my "pre thailand" days in the "distant memories" part of my head!

  8. We have been together for 3 1/2 years and although i was living in Thailand at the time i actually me my wife while in Bahrain. We lived in an apartment there for nearly 2 years and suddenly i knew what real happiness was. Although i had a decent job i owned nothing and had no savings. She took over my finances an within no time my bank balance was healthier than ever before. 18 months ago we moved back to Thailand to get married and for the first year we lived in her parents house (tradditional wooden one on stilts). We got married 7 days after we arrived. The sin sodt was huge and i was mentally preparing to wake up one morning finding that i was being kicked out and left with nothing. But i was so so wrong. I tried to give her mum money each month, (about 5000 baht), but she either refused or gave it back to the wife, (because we need it for our future). Earlier this year we bought a lovely house and mum gave back 20% of the sin sodt to help pay for it.

My wife frequently complained to me, (while i was away working), that she was bored in the village with nothing to do, but we had our first baby last month and now she does not have enough time on her hands.

Apart from having to go to work, life could not be better. :o

  9. I lived in Bangkok for 4 1/2 years and it was great. I loved the crowds and the atmosphere, especially in places like MBK on a busy day. Before that i never imagined i could enjoy shopping.

The last 18 month i have lived in Chaiyaphum and although it's meant to be a city it's really just a big village. The way of life is totally opposite of Bangkok and for the first few months it was really boring. Now i have become so used to the way of life i could not imagine living any other way. In fact i spent a night in Bangkok last month and it was almost scary, soo busy and too much traffic. Looks like i am going to stay in Issan for good. :o

  10. But they seem to have some system that you can buy a sticker or something so you can park upto 1 month for only 600THB. Unfortunately explanation only in Thai. Anybody here knows how this system works? Thanks a lot!

I am thinking of using the long term car park for up to 50 days at a time. Does anyone know if this is possible. Any info or web links would be appreciated. (the official site has only thai info).

  11. When i lived in Bangkok i always went to Seacon Square for my haircut. The hairdresser is on the top floor near the food court. The Salon name is Ritzy cut. It's the 'guy' that does a good job. I'm not sure if he's a kathoey or just extremly gay but at least it makes him easy to spot!

  12. Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum but i have lived in Chaiyaphum for 1 1/2 years. I used to live in a tiny village near Ban Khwao but now i live 10 minutes from Tesco Lotus.

I work in Saudi Arabia so i am not at home all the time but when home i would love to meet any of you for a beer and to actually talk in English!

Also, if any of you are regular drivers in the city and have been "cut up" by a stupid farang on a mountain bike i apologise. But there's sod all else to do there! :o
