  2. if you have time to look online yourself and since you are in EST you could look for a cheap flight to the west coast and look for a flight out if LAX or SFO China airlines website has always had the best fare to BKK, also look on line check the fares but go back and check a couple days later as I was looking for a flight short notice and the same search went from appz 1800 on 1 day down to 1270 a couple of days later why I don;t know, I saw fares on china airlines in the sept oct for 999, China air, Cathay Pacific, Exa all usually have a sale from 1 of the west coast citys LAX SFO Vancover CA, I have also seen a cheap flight China Eastern and Air China ( not same as china airlines) or look for a cheap flight to london and a cheap flight fron london to BKK there budget flights from london as well do a search on tripadvisor.com Thailand forum for info on london to BKK, good luck be patient but stay on it till you find something that works for you, Callao

  3. Banks question clarification: I expect to deposit social security and a pension monthly into an American bank and then transfer money, as needed, to Thailand. So I still need that question answered. (What are a couple of stable banks in the Isaan area (cities please) that have American counterparts? (Like HSBC and CitiBank)?

Hospitals: Do any Isaan hospitals routinely treat people for heart attacks or strokes or do they simply stabilize the person and ship them off to Bangkok or some other location? Anyone had any first-hand experiences with either one of these conditions?

    Thanks for any information...

I heard that Bangkok bank in BKK is the only Thai bank that has a USA bank routing number that you can easy transfer funds I believe theres a Citibank in BKK as well Bangkok bank has branchs all over even Vientiane

  7. im not in a rush. just wanna get bus station.... 200 bht for an hour trip is excessive in thailand these mini van hawks,, doesnt haappen in bkk because theres more competition with minivans,,, same all over world competition in products and services always the best for customers

Sorry, Marky. Most of us misinterpreted your request for the "cheapest" way to get to NK. We thought you meant the "best value". Whether it's 100 or 200 baht by minivan, if you have no luggage you could be on the first van out of UT and be in NK within 2 hours of taking off from BKK. But you asked for the "cheapest" method. Assuming you don't want to walk all the way (free), the cheapest way is:

Walk to the train station (less than an hour)

Wait for train. They rarely run on time but if you time your flight out of BKK right, you shouldn't have to wait more than 4 or 5 hours.

Then sit on the train for 2 hours from UT to NK.

Remember, you can only have one beer while you wait for the train, otherwise, you'll use up all the savings.

The reason the minivan drivers charge more in NK than Bangkok is that except for this run, there's almost no opportunity for other business.

900 bt taxi fare from Udon to NK is expensive 100 or 200 bt is pretty reasonable even for cheap charlie like me, and in september of this year it was 150 bt tuk tuk to the bus station in town or just take the train all the way from BKK amd save 1 night hotel room as well

  8. The taxi from the airport to the bus station is now 60 baht. There are many buses to KK, about one every hour.

    Chok dee

the easiest way is to take the minivan at the airport 200 bt tuk tuk from the airport to the mall area in Udon ( where the bus station is) cost me 150 in sept. if you go minivan go directly to the stand by the arrivals exit and purchace your ticket and go as these fill up and there won;t be another till the next flight arrives

  9. One of the first concerts I saw was the KINKS at the Hollywood Paladiumin 1972 with Rory Gallagher as opening band, Rolling Stones at the Forum in LA in 74 was fantastic, had a 100 piece Jamacian steel drum band as opening act, Zappa and the Mothers of Invention at UCLA and since I've lived in Santa Cruz for a long time have seen many good shows here at the Catalist, Neil Young and Crazy Horse after the earthquake benefit, Sammy Hagar, Johnny Winter, LOS LOBOS, The Tubes, Emmy Lou Harris, and next month Zappa Plays Zappa here in town, saw the Kinks at the civic auditorium

  10. Looks like I'm going to be in Udon for a day or two next week by myself any fun places to hang out and have a beer with some attractive bargirls close to Centarra ( next to the mall) thanx Callao

  11. I fly into the coutry every other month and I always bring 2 bottles of wine. I believe this is the legal amout. Wheras Vodka Whiskey etc is 1 liter.

When I asked at the DF on arrivals they told me the allowance is only 1 litre and it's either/or, not 1 of each (spirits/wine) ie. only 1 litre in total maximum.

I was taking a domestic flight with Asia air and while looking thru my carry on bag she found about 4 packs of Marlboro mediums (not available in thailand) starts pulling them out of my bag and says Oh No you can't have these, until I tell her that I'm allowed 10 packs and you can't take them, Oh yes thats right she says and puts them back, if you didn't know the law she would have taken them, had to tell her to f*** off

  12. thanks for the info, rental prices seem extremly steep a friend of mine in BKK is renting a 2 bed house just of Suk for 10K baht and it is a nice house in a quiet soi just of the

main tourist area 2 minutes walk to the shops/bars etc

for quoted prices of $400-800 i would expect something pretty good !!!!

how much is cost of living up there ? monthly bills etc ?

thanks again for all the info posted

on the other end of that my friend stayed at a upstairs downstairs sorta duplex when he first got there and only paided $110 a month, but thru his girlfriends family so cheap housing is pretty much word to mouth as in you'd have to stay somewhere thats available till you could find something cheaper or get a better deal and letting people know you're looking (lao people) and majority of lao homes will have squat toilet and cold water shower, so one with western facilitys cost more not many kitchens either

  13. [/quote

Bottom line is if you can throw enough money at it (I'd guess $20,000) create some paperwork you probably could do it but that is probably more than most guys are willing to do, ME INCLUDED, The guy at the Laos US embassy told me straight up to start marriage proceding and try for a fiance visa or forget it, regular village girls are not going to get a tourist visa, they all think once they have a falang friend that they can do it, only to be bummed about it after, so if you you want her to come get one of your buddys to propose, just kidding, callao

  14. 50000 cases a week?? Where did they pull that number out of?

40617 cases suspected/confirmed 263 deaths in the US 0.6% fatality rate and I suspect many of the fatalities would have died soon anyways.

Fear mongering at its worse. The fatality rate is 0.57% in LOS. Still no panic in the streets of the US. Nobodies running around in masks. And you will be hard pressed to find it mentioned on the news.

they better hope CNN and BBC don't pickup on this story thailand will really see a slowdown sounds ridiculous to me

  15. I feel the idiot for asking such a question, but with so much info available, I don't really know where to start.

Some friends want to visit in December and they've quite reasonably asked how to get the best price for tickets. Since I'm here, I must know right? Except that I came here 4 yrs ago and have never left, haven't even done a visa run in three.

I'm sure many have good info on this topic, thank you very much if you care to share. Parameters are two people in the Oakland area, flying into Bangkok, December, staying for a week or two.

I find that china air has the lowest price and the best connection 100am departure from sfo, 3.5 hr in taipei, 1230 afternoon arrival in bkk, same coming back depart bkk 500pm 2 hr in taipei home in sfo at 730pm and buying your ticket directly from thier website gets the best price, just paid $794 for september weekend travel if you go during the week its cheaper

  16. I was in the Air Force at U-Tapao during 66-67.

I was there from 68-69, 1985th Communications Squadron. :) The reason I'm living in Thailand today is due to my experiences then. Lived native in a small village a few kms from the base, sarong, outdoor bathing, learned to speak Thai rather quickly since no one could speak English. :D Rented a house with a few others in Pattaya as a weekend retreat. Quiet, clean and comfortable hut style bars along the beach, which had remarkably clear water and white sand beaches.

The base had an outdoor movie theater on a beach that most of the time you couldn't hear what was going on as the B52s flew directly overhead. Very basic bars (mainly shacks made from corrugated tin and plywood leftovers from the base construction) just out the front gate of the base and along the side of the road going to Sattihip. Mekong whiskey (or was that Sangthip) with beer as a mixer seemed popular.

Have pulled out my slide collection of that period but my scanner is out of order and have ordered a new one so will posts pics in the near future.

I too was stationed at U Tapao for a year in 1975 and lived offbase in a little hooch on KM8, and I too come back to thailand because of my expierances I had there, Pattaya had the Marriot and a some bars in the Pattayland area, Ban Chiang was about 3 blocks square, Sattahip had Indian Tailors, I tryed to find where I lived before and went to U Tapao but things have changed alot there, entrance to the base is still there but only for thai military, base looks the same nothing has changed at all, there still is that sort of park area between the end of runway and the beach I went down there in a car but got shooed out off limits for falangs, remember big Klong monsters (moniter lizards) in the klongs there, pete the mascot 20ft python, water buffalo carts, living on foe soup, duckeggs and fried rice, mekong and Singhi beer, and buying up all the booze on your ration card on payday and selling it downtown for party money sundays at the NCO club where they had Mauy Thai fighters and they would challange anyone from the base to fight them, and almost all got beatup, Now I find Vientaine Laos does the same thing for me now Callao
