  1. For good daily ramen and curry try Grand Ramen on Thonglor. It is at the entrance road to Grand Hotel (I think it's called that). There are a couple more Japanese restaurants there, including a very nice teppanyaki place. You'll walk out happy and stuffed for a couple hundred baht.

Another very nice Ramen place is in the same area as Villa market near Sukhumvit soi 33. It is diagonally across from Subway ("diagonally through" the building if you understand). Small place, I have seen plenty of Japanese in there, less non-Japanese. Not pricey.

There is another nice place on Thonglor that serves good sushi. Again, I'm coming up short with the name. It is very near the entrance of "Brittish Town Tonglor" though. Still not pricey.

    MOS burger :)

  2. If anyone is interested, I have a couple of torrent sites where events are posted very quick.

These trackers generally get the scene and independent releases first. They even upload single fights as they are finished, even when the rest of the event is ongoing.

    PM me for details.

Live viewings you can get on UFC.com, costs you about US$ 50 though... Justin.tv, atdhe.net and more also shows live events, but the quality is too poor for me to be able to enjoy the action and see the details of the ground game for example.

  3. Hi,

Is there a place anywhere in Bangkok to watch NHL hockey?

Or is there a way to get Canadian sport channels here? (Slingbox...)

Playoffs are here, would like to see some games.

    Thanks. :)

If your bandwidth allows for it. Early morning viewing works for me though.

  4. 7. IF you download and share some downloaded material without the consent of any copyright holder, then they call it copyright infringement. HOWEVER, many countries allows FAIR USE, no matter how hard the **AA's try to lobby their case.

It is still within the right for many people to download music, movies, tv series, games, software and other things as long as it falls under fair use.

What is fair use? One obvious example is that you already own originals and want to have digital copies for easy use/access.

Oh, US laws and regulations do NOT apply world wide.

And how many people download movies they already own legally ??

I am szure that makes up a huge % of torrent traffic.. :o

    1. I know I do. I have no idea the percentage of people who do. Do you? (ideas, feelings and guessing does not count...)

I rather download from someone who has expertise encoding than spend hours (or days) doing it myself. Besides, a 4 GB encoded BD rip is far better for HTPC storage than the huge 25-50 GB originals.

Also, yes it is legal to download broadcast media. TIVO (or any other media recorder, like a VHS tape) is a great example of this. If you are allowed to record (essentially downloading and storing), so is anyone else.

Torrents have no ads, and yes, with TIVO advertisements are skipped over easily.

    2. If that is a claim, please back it up with solid data one way or the other.

  5. That is the game you play when you are STEALING copyright material. This topic should be closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

    1. it is NOT stealing.

    2. many free to use solutions exist.

    3. it is NOT stealing.

    4. the internet is NOT evil.

    5. anything from shoutcast to spotify to musicovery to last.fm to many more LEGAL, ENDORSED and PROMOTED alternatives exist.

    6. it is NOT stealing.

    8. Step off the "repeat it enough and it will be true" bandwagon the **AA's like so much. It is NOT, I repeat, N O T stealing.

Let me close with the definition of stealing:

"A person is guilty of theft, if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it".

    COPYING leaves the original intact...

  6. I was foolishly out mid day at Pratunam about 4 days ago. The lights turned red just as I was about to cross, and I had to stand there and wait my turn. The 3 minutes it took for the lights to switch made me feel deep fried. Later in the evening I turned a nice shade of burned flesh (aka red). FROM 3-4 MINUTES OF SUN EXPOSURE. I have never ever been burned this quickly and never burned in Bangkok before (many years).

This was a different kind of sun light... the UV index released the day after noted it was at 11+ (on a scale of 1-16).

    Anyhow. I lived.

  7. But no-one has commented that such-and-such is missing from the offer! This is probably because guests typically only stay for a single night, and therefore either do not have time to identify any services that would be useful, or are quite happy to give these services a miss for that night.

    Simon

If you have guests staying a single night or short stays only, I would suppose the key for them is to be able to get some decent sleep and relaxation. Ask them about the sleep they had, the mattress ok? Was it quiet? Would they have appreciated a massage (not the x-rated kind), since they would be traveling shortly (or just have traveled)?

From my own, although limited, experience traveling I always want to have access to my favorite fluids (water and coke) and I don't want anyone to bother me needlessly (eg. someone asking me what I want from their location would be met with an answer of "nothing" or "don't know").

Don't discount clean and fresh surroundings (remove dust, noise, anything old and run down). Something that looks and smells clean lifts the mood of everyone instantly. CLEAN BATHROOMS! And I mean, clean them religiously.

As for the currency exchange idea, talk to the local non-bank exchange rate licensed agencies. Take a %, and let them run it.

Whats that worth? 2 satang? better than a spit in a cup I hope.

  8. If the guys head was put in a plastic bag and the bag tied up, how on earth is there blood spatter all over the bridge??????

The guy obviously put a bag over his head put the rope over the bag and around his neck, jumped from the bridge, his weight pulling the rope around his neck severing the head from the body. The body falls into the river and the head is hanging from the bridge with the rope around the plastic bag. Simple.

The blood splatter on the bridge suggests the body was not severed in one shot right away, but hung on for a while, with the heart pumping out blood through the neck and onto the side of the bridge in spurts. Of course, more data is needed before making a firm statement.

The plastic bag over his head was another measure, possibly, to ensure he dies from suffocation just in case the hanging went wrong.

If his hands were tied, one could reasonably consider murder.

Another curious issue, the "note" on the hand railing of the bridge. This must have taken considerable time to do. Perhaps nothing a murderer has time nor the nerve to do at a very public location. We all know that even at 3 am there is noticeable traffic in most parts of Bangkok. This makes the murder theory a bit weaker perhaps.

There are simply too many variables for anyone to make any sort of educated assessment based on the reports in the media and the few low resolution images shown.

One must consider signs of struggle (ie. bruising on the body of the victim, evidence at location of rope). Weather the victim was restrained with handcuffs/rope/other means. Fingerprints on plastic bag and rope. Blood samples (victims for sure, but any other person(s)?). And a host of other questions.

  9. www.comodo.com

No renewal or update fees ever!

    freebutton.jpg FREE Comodo AntiVirus

    freebutton.jpg FREE Comodo Firewall

    freebutton.jpg FREE Comodo Internet Security

    freebutton.jpg FREE Website Authentication

    freebutton.jpg FREE Email Security Certificate

    freebutton.jpg FREE Comodo SecureEmail

All for free, for life. (well, at least until the company stops providing the software.)

I use the firewall. It is very powerful, but sometimes the Defence+ is a bit annoying if you set it to safe mode.

The antivirus is on par with any other commercial offerings.

  10. She cheated on you and you want her back???? :D

Well she begged me to take her back, i had spent about a week thinking it over. The idea being non of us are saints, especially me, and before i had met her I was definitely running abit wild.

and i found out from her ex, he didn't know that I existed, she was playing both of us.

One wonders how it will turn out if you take her back. She plays all and everyone around her to suit her own needs and daily "feeling".

Do go back to her and let me know later how fsked you got. I am keeping a database of poor saps taken for rides.

    :o

  11. www.shoutcast.com (internet radio stations)

www.justin.tv (plenty of "independent" TV channels)

www.atdhe.net (live sports with decent quality and live international TV)

With atdhe I enjoyed the Aussie open without commercial breaks and annoying commentating.

I enjoy NHL icehockey daily. A plethora of matches to choose from every day.

There are plenty more sites, but this ought to get anyone started.

Anyone still paying thousands of baht for "TV" needs to reconsider.

One note. I suggest a 2 mbps internet connection for best viewing on atdhe (and kill your torrents for un-interrupted streaming).

  12. I unwisely bought a can of this soap water with some colouring. One sip and it went down the drain.

Must be some rich Thai's son who came up with it and Mr. Pooyai paid decent cash to have it bottled. I kid, I kid... I think.

WHAT where they thinking at Pepsi? Oooh, this <censored> tastes like <censored>, so .. LET'S SELL IT FOR MONEY!

  13. Make sure your main criteria are fulfilled. Eg. what you will mostly use it for.

    Keyboard, mouse and screen.

This is what you use each and every time you are in front of the laptop.

A reflective screen will annoy the <censored> out of you.

A flimsy keyboard with rattling keys will annoy you and keep the missus up at night.

A mouse (touchpad) that is unresponsive or have hard to click buttons will put you off big time.

TEST TEST TEST at the shops. The display units are there for a reason.

In my own personal opinion the best deals right now are the IBM/Lenovo offerings. Have a look at the Thinkpad X61.

Personal shopping help (within Bangkok) available for a small fee. PM me.

  14. Simple answer: No.

Currently tourist visas (including the trips) can be had for about the equivalent of 2700 baht per month. Your suggestion is 2.5 times more expensive. PLUS you'd have to pay it all in advance.

I'd consider it at half the cost.

If you'd like to discuss real options, please PM me and we can start a dialogue.

  15. Any of these problems could result in you having to apply the next day and you would have to change your flight at an Air Asia ticket office which is costly at such short notice.

Play it safe and arrive the night or day before and allow for 2 nights away.

Or you could buy a one way ticket to Udon, and buy the return flight immediately after successful submission of your application. Even a last minute airasia ticket, at worst, is about equal to another nights stay in Laos.

My return flight booked Monday (flight Tuesday) was only 2000 baht including all taxes and fees.

Edit: Oh, of course you get your VISA at the Laos consulate in Bangkok well in advance.

If you plan well then I do not foresee any trouble with a one night "run".
