    -------

    Dear True Internet user,

Due to tropical storm in Taiwan, CAT Telecom fiber optic cable leased lines have been damaged. This may cause slower speed in browsing some international web pages, where their servers are located in the Asian region, e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Hi5 and Yahoo. However, True Internet is doing its best to facilitate hi-speed Internet users with its TIG network that helps relieve such effects.

By the time the damage is completely fixed (around 15 Sep 09) the users will be able to access all web pages as usual. More information is available on www.newsfactor.com

    Did anybody noticed ?

Bandwidth services are at 98% for the damaged cables according to reports (http://www.gadgetell.com/tech/comment/asian-telecom-damaged-undersea-cables-to-be-fixed-soon/). I don't see True working at 98% of their supposed service levels....

We all know that ISP's in Thailand are not held accountable for any actions.

The only way they are going to start listening is when we, the users, start demanding discounts and/or no payments until services are at least acceptable.

  2. They start a limited trial and 4G is already knocking at the door... TiT :)

I think the bottom of the problem is that there is no governing body to issue licenses etc, hence "trials".

But yes, Thailand is waay behind in mobile data connectivity. I mean, even Laos (one of the poorest countries in the world) already has a nice working 3G network with very decent speeds.

  3. It is well known (I hope) that wearing a face mask that is so popular does NOT protect you from getting an airborne virus (eg. the flu).

The facemasks only partially prevents spreading of any airborne virus if YOU the wearer have this kind of virus.

Also, be very careful using the alcohol disinfectants. There are quite a few bacteria (particularly Staph) that are resistant to this. So what happens is that you kill off all the good bacteria and other protective measures your skin has and allow the "bad" to flourish. If you have any open wounds, good luck....

  4. I keep on seeing installation charges for phone lines for B3800+ Is this correct??? Oh my goodness, that's incredibly expensive!!!

Do not ask them for a deal. Tell them you are going to buy when they OFFER you <expected deal>.

I got True ADSL without having to buy the telephone line, free modem, free upgrade of speed and SME range of IP's (normally a bit better overall Internet speeds). I also did not have to have another True service to get the cheaper prices.

Overall True seems alright and is incredibly much better than TOT. I get about 88% of my rated speeds.

How did you get away with a free phone line when their prices are B3800+??

I guess it really depends on how much effort you want to put in telling sales people that you'll buy at <expected deal>.

Sooner or later you'll find someone willing to offer you what you asked for.

It is, however, a game of diminishing returns though. I mean, how far are you willing to go for 3,800 Baht?

  6. There are a few solutions, but all of them (except the large and expensive ones) only allows you to recharge the battery while not in use (or makes the laptop drain the battery slower).

You can get laptop bags, backpacks, camera bags, waist bags, clamshell panels, wallet sized and many more "designs".

Generally they have a solar panel capable of between 2 Watts and 15 Watts, and comes with Lithium-Ion batteries up to 8800 mAh (generall a laptop battery is around 5000 mAh. Some more, some less).

  7. Could anyone do me a favour and test this URL from within Thailand and let me know if it is accessible - the domain hasn't been resolving. The IP address works fine though, maybe this is just a problem with 'True ADSL'

    http://www.mycyberhosting.net

It didn't give the police warning but was unreachable, I suspect there is a problem with the True DNS service and somehow there are a whole bunch of domains missing from it, I can't help thinking it's related to some kind of cock up with their censorship system although I could be wrong.

I'm not in Thailand at the moment so can't run any more tests myself. This is a website which belongs to a colleague of mine and we have had reports from various people who can't access any of our servers from within Thailand, it's almost as if they have blocked an entire web host for some reason.

Edit : It's working fine from England at the moment.

Not loading on my True ADSL either (tested with opendns, level 3 dns and true dns), but then again google.com and yahoo.com have trouble loading right now too.

Try using the proxy.trueinternet.co.th:8080 proxy or www.hidemybox.com webproxy.

Using the webproxy the site loads fine for me.

  8. General anti-crapware

    Spybot S&D (update weekly)

    Spywareblaster (update weekly)

    CCleaner

    PCtools firewall

    Media player and codec

FFDshow with media player classic homecinema (instead of VLC)

    Tweak UI

UltraVNC to remotely control and remotely update any softwares and drivers. (only requires your friend to open the program and tell you the current IP address (www.whatismyip.com)

Make sure you password protect the remote access.

Bookmark sanook.com and other popular Thai sites.

  9. When get a brand new desktop in the house, what's the do and don't from day 1 to keep it in healthy condition? :)

Keep it away from water, dust and children. Buy a UPS. Ample airflow is critical. Make sure there are fans pointing over the HDD's from inside the case.

Ensure HDD temperatures do not exceed 55C, CPU temp not over 70C. Lower temps are better.

Partition before install OS - what the advantage of this? What size of a 1Tb HD (both C and D)?

The advantage is minimal when you are using it. However, after install make a backup image of the C drive. Makes recovery much easier and quicker. Install drivers and core programs to C: before making the backup. I'd suggest 20-40 GB on C:.

If using 64-bit OS, what's the maks ram the system recognize?

As much as you'd like to install and as much as the mainboard supports.

What programs do you download (clean/tweak etc)?

Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, ccleaner, pctools firewall, tweakui, DU meter, teracopy2.4beta

    What programs dont you download?

    Whatever I do not need/want....

Realy need more than antivirus ?

Antivirus is only needed by those who do not know what they are doing with the PC. The above suggested programs is enough if you are semi-cautious.

In the event you suspect a virus have found its way into your system, an online scan is enough at trendmicro or panda security.

If you are unsure about a downloaded file use http://virusscan.jotti.org/ to scan the file.

    System I have in mind is Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 - 2,66, 4GB ram DDR3 1066Mhz.

With your help, I hope to take better care of new desktop than my old laptop.

Only headache is choose between 32 or 64 bit OS.

All shops I asked said : dont buy 64bit, many customer complain and come back with them. While here in this sub forum majority seem to recommend 64 bit.

If you are unsure go with the tried Windows XP 32-bit.

These suggestiuons are very basic, but should get you started in the right direction.

  10. Actually I am using Win 7 also and it is a slow opener - taking about 45 seconds - not sure if because of tab restore or not - but this just started with latest version.

Just did a close and not save tabs - to get display of Firefox took 20 seconds from click on shortcut. IE8 took 10 seconds.

It is a known bug in FF 3.5. FF accesses the temporary files for IE, FF and temp folders for generating random security of some sort.

3.5.1 and newer attempts to fix this bug. Time to update perhaps?

Another crude way of dealing with this issue is to clean IE and FF caches and the temp files folder(s).

  11. First, let's identify how spicy Thai chili's are.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scale

This places the "Thai pepper" at a quite unimpressive 50-100k scoville units. Compared to the Habanero (100-350k), the Thai chili is quite mild. However, even then the Habanero pales in comparison to the Naga Jolokia at up to a million scoville units.

If you think you eat spicy food, please make your favorite spicy dish with as many habanero's as you would Thai birds eye chili's and see the results. It's quite a different taste.

To give you an example, Somtam seems to be prepared generally with about 8 chili's or so. Double that and swap the Thai chili's to as many habaneros and you begin to understand the start of spicy food.

Some ways to increase spiciness of food is to prepare it with much less sugar and add an extra dose of lime (if the dish calls for lime that is), some mint, and to grind the chili's to as small parts as possible and let them soak in a drop of oil before adding it.

Of course, for you who really want spicy food, I suggest an additive instead of fresh chili's. Personally I prefer the fresh chili's.

    Try http://firegirl.com/extreme.html

Has anyone found anything better than habaneros in Thailand?

I can only find habaneros on fairly rare occasions at villa market.

Edit: I forgot about the Wolf hot sauce. Found at Foodland (not all though for some reason).

Make a batch of grilled chicken breasts without skin and bone and add a bottle or two of Wolf and serve.

  12. LG artcool is the most quiet in a real life test.

Simply put, you can only very faintly hear the airflow from the indoor unit. Absolutely no mechanical noise.

The outdoor unit you have to somewhat strain to hear, even with the compressor running and you are standing right next to it.

    http://www.lge.com/products/category/usp/art%20cool.jhtml

Just go to your favorite aircon place and listen to the test units.

  13. I can't wait until we have Terabyte SSD's as standard.

For the ones wondering why laptops are popular, the reasons are probably some or all of the below.

    1. Physical size. Eg. doesn't need it's own desk.

    2. Easy to maintain and clean.

    3. Silent.

    4. Power consumption.

    5. Price (particularly netbooks).

    6. Option to bring with you on travels or even to your friends house to show the latest pictures, videos etc. Not everyone knows how to transfer large files or how to properly burn optical media.

Laptops are powerful enough to be the main computer people use today. What has been lacking is large capacity drives resulting in an array of external drives in many cases. Good thing they are finally getting to larger drives.

What are stored on any computer with large capacity? Media. Home video's and images. Lots and lots of downloaded media (not necessarily illegal, as the assumption would be. This is a discussion for another time).

  14. As mentioned above in this thread, you need to set up your devices (mic / speakers etc) as this screen shot shows

Exactly, just choose one sound setting at a time and try to make a test call. It will promptly report if there is any problem either with output or input. Easy easy.
