This is also vague. Perhaps just poor writing

Appears students studying IN Thailand. So that's Chinese PRC and a few Koreans

It does not appear to be gap year holiday for foreigners.

It said foreigner students studying in Thailand. And the last time I checked, Chinese and Koreans and anybody else not Thai are foreigners. Where is this vagueness you refer to? Perhaps just poor comprehension...

    I don't complain.

I have still lots of USD in and FCD, and today get 1.20 baht more for every dollar, than on August 31.

Keep on going with your populism Srettha

You get nothing until you decide to convert some of those USD to Baht.  But then, you probably knew that already. The ignorant are the only ones that don't know the real story...

My wife once stole 200,000 Baht from my fixed term account (out of 400,000 I had there for my marriage extension. I think she hoped to replace it before the extension was due.

She took my fixed term bank book, passport and my forged signature on a withdrawal slip to the bank and convinced the staff I had authorised the transaction. She took it out in 4 lots of 50,000 Baht (at different branches). She tore out the page on the bankbook showing the transactions and new balance.

I checked my term deposit about 4 months before it was due and was astounded to find I was 200,000 Baht short. The bank staff managed to track down the original paperwork for the transaction done at that branch and it was obvious from some of the signatures that my wife was behind it.

Anyway, I managed to replace the money 2 months prior to the extension, although I took an unexpected financial hit.

So if your wife or partner is determined they will always find a way to relieve you of your money. It's our job as husbands to try and safeguard our finances for our shared future. Sometimes it seems like the job of the wife is to spend as much money as soon as possible.

Are you two still living together?

  4. You need to get that woman away from the family (maybe). I took my wife away from the village...to the US where we resided (among other places) until we returned to live here in Thailand. My wife got jobs and I made it clear that whatever money she earned was hers to do whatever she wanted. She sent some to her family occassionally, but mostly she fed her own wants and saved the rest. Upon our return to Thailand to live, she spent most of her savings and some of mine on building our first house here. Mind you she always worked and now receives a monthly check. I also give her some of mine, but I take care of us and the household, she is free to do whatever she wants with hers. We (meaning me) have never had a problem... Get out of dodge man. If she come with you, she'll love you for it. And she isn't working, then shame on you!

That is a rough one. I am not rich but I help with family when I can. I am paying for one of her sister's twin girls university  room at the moment, a fan room. I offered to pay for an Air room but the family declined the offer. Once a woman all decked out in her finest, told my wife that, in Thai, that she should have waited to find a rich farang to support the whole family while I was standing there.

A friend of mine got divorced from his Thai wife, the very next month her parents came to his door wanting their monthly payment.

Wait a minute...what's this about giving monthly payments to the wife's parents??? That a bunch of bunk! I'm up for my 16th annual extension of my Non-O based on retirement within a couple of weeks. Shock! Horror! My Thai wife, we've been married 26 years, yesterday told me she has spent my 800k keeping her restaurant going. What can I do? I'm 75, on UK passport.

Hmmm. Spent the money and didn't tell you. On the other hand, you haven't been monitoring your account. I could become a victim same as you. Thanks for the reminder. I do keep an eye on things at all times - so should we all...

Yes, ATM machines disappearing by the minute across Chiang Mai.

Pantip plaza and nearby zero machines.

Seven minute walk to nearest bank & ATM.

Small shops in the malls in CM were cash only but within last 6 months 99% offer QR code payment, some now won't accept cash.

    Also disappearing from 7/11 stores.

I use BOLT taxi, excellent service, cheaper than GRAB, but cash only so I have to check what cash I have every time I go a BIG C etc., mall to be ready to pay BOLT driver.

According to the Bolt Taxi information I just searched, you can order a ride and pay for it all through their Bolt App...  Your driver(s) could be ripping off the company.

Is this a serious comment? Because I don't decide who to talk to based on their skin colour. That's some real weird, racist s**t you're coming out with there.

Yes, you're right, but it's true. No one expresses their real thoughts and opinions. All you have to do is read the comments when someone is accused of wrongdoing... Look at the stark differences between comments about Blacks versus Whites (regardless of national origin) Asians, Muslims (from any country), Arabs, Russians... Go ahead prove me wrong. Weird, no, reality. Racist, yes, you act like racism doesn't exist.

I've been here for 6 years, and know exactly where I am, so I'm not lost. Weird that someone can make such a statement and only know a few farangs, while there are thousands that have moved here in the last 15 years. Have to get around a lot all over Thailand to meet so many. As far as knowing if a person is "good" or not, that takes a lot of time. Knowing what a person is takes a minimum of 6 months, weekly, to get top know them, an all types of situations. This is the same as dating. 6 months to a year of continuous meetings will tell you a lot, but not everything of course, about a person. Even serial killers have neighbors, and they don't know them as well as they think. Think Jeffrey Dahmer and Gacy.

Granted, you may know where you are and what's going on around you. Weird statement - I think not. By the way, I known hundreds over the years and many are still living here...most have moved on. This is not about knowing someone for a certain amount of time. Just read some of the questions asked by members of this forum - both old expats and newbies - and you'll see that many are in fact "fish out of water." Maybe not you specifically, but many constantly can't understand that they're "Not In Kansas Anymore" or the UK or Austrailia, or Denmark, etc., etc., etc...

    Probably the first.

I've learned to avoid eye contact with farangs, as I invariably regret responding to them. So many whingers, drug addicts, scammers, braggarts, conspiracy theorists, bitter people, chips on their shoulder, insanely bored pensioners, more scammers, talkative bores ..... oh, lots of talkative bores. A bunch of losers and not good to associate with such people.

Well that about covers everyone here. I have to guess you don't associate with anyone. But then, if you're actually black like the picture in your profile, then "farangs" and many asians for that matter aren't seeking you out for conversation and friendship in the first place... That said, your comments ring true.

when I was first here in 1974 - - if you saw another farang on the street, you both stopped to say hello and exchange information, good restaurants, best place to stay etc...

My God! 1974...I thought I was the only one here that has been in and out of Thailand since those early days. Actually I first set foot here in 1972. The people showing up here in the last 15 years or so are "mostly" totally lost souls...meeting a "good" person out and about in villages/towns/cities, malls restaurants etc. is almost impossible. Good being subjective - like anything these days.

  12. The last time I opened an account at Bangkok Bank was back in 2019 with a Non-Imm "O-A" visa. They ask if I had anyone who could vouch for me.  I had a friend married to a teacher at the local Rajchabat (City) University who went along with me and viola, they opened an account for me in about 30 minutes... No other paperwork needed except for my passport.  They said any government official, (police, teacher, Pooyai Ban [Village Headman] present account holder, etc. would suffice. - It also says this very thing on Bangkok Bank's website.

Then I wonder why there are so many currency exchange booths in Pattaya now. Certainly many more than a few years ago.

Maybe because thousands of Pattaya visitors have a habit of bringing loads of cash. I really don't know...besides I've never set foot in Pattaya - always been an up-country/Issan type of guy myself and no problems using an ATM or getting money over the counter at a bank...

Unless he has the right visa, it is virtually impossible, i.e. unless you know someone in the banking system willing to risk getting caught.

Apparently this is all about money laundering, a good excuse which will push us all towards digital currencies which will be the end as they will have total control over our money IMO.

Still doesn't solve your problem, I know.

In the unlikely event you haven't figured it out already, "they" already have total control over your money. Just because you can take out a few "cash" bills every now and then means nothing. Try getting your money out of a bank that has a "run" in progress...not happening!

So, if, say, I exchange a lot of money after arriving in Thailand, I'm either supposed to leave it in a dodgy hotel safe, or just carry it around 24/7?

That's not a good argument. During numerous visits here I only brought a small amount of cash just for incidentals along with my debit and credit cards. Never needed an account, and I've been coming here for 20 years...
