Muslim women wear their veil for religious reasons. Will he now bring into law that sikhs remove their turbans or for safety's sake make them wear crash helmets. Why is this allowed?Because of a sikhs religious reasons....Unfair and discriminatory.
I would have to agree. It's inappropriate to apply these rules only to Muslims. The implication is that only Muslims are the heart of darkness. It should apply to everyone regardless of race or belief.
You'd like to be threatened with imprisonment for wearing a hood or a bandana in public?

The thing is that wearing a veil covers the woman's face thus make it impossible to recognize her according to an ID. As it is now, ANyONE can wear a veil and use someone else's ID / driver license etc'
I don't think there's a problem in saying "If you cannot establish your identity, you can't have a driving licence or a passport. The choice is yours."
Forcing people to show their faces in public is symptomatic of a worrying trend in government.

It's a smokescreen for his chancellor's clownish handling of the economy and viscous attacks on public services, especially the NHS.
I would fight with every ounce of strength any law which required people to show their faces underthreat of violence or imprisonment when not it is not explicitly required, eg to confirm their identity in court or at an airport.

Google is sadface about censorship but really, really likes money and influence. No-one should be surprised at this.

Close the golf courses, tax the breweries for their use of water, tax water in plastic bottles. That's a start.

Policing 101. Do a round up and fine those detained a massive Bt. 100 for being ' undesirables '. Who decides what an undesirable is other then the BIB at the time ?
Will the PM be giving out ' rewards ' for another excellent piece of police work ?
They've already had their reward: 5000 baht of it.
Hey, isn't Songkhran coming up?

I have a novel Idea. Why not just legalize gambling and open some casinos in Thailand
All the tourist areas sans Bangkok. It will generate tremendous revenue for Thailand. I know
There are those who argue that locals will get hooked on gambling but you know they are already gambling either
on line or with illegal forms of gaming in the country. So bring it under control and that way you can also control gamblers
Bar the ones that are having problems from the casinos.
I think this is a win win for everyone. Have tax revenues to go to real causes that need to be looked after
Because that would expose the dirty secret of the gaming industry: that, like the booze industry, the bulk of their profits come from addicts.
-
"The Bangkok Post reports that police have so far failed to arrest anyone involved in illegal gambling at Tao Pun, despite raiding it on four previous occasions."
I'm shocked by the gambling that's going on in here.

Anybody know for sure why this case is getting so much attention? The fact that the PM Cameron requested personally makes me that the victim's family must be very connected politically.
You've been in Thailand too long. There's a general election next year and this is a safe vote-winner.

Yes, a horrific double murder and the guilty need to be brought swiftly to Justice.
But hold on a minute about Petitions to the British PM and demands for a British investigation. Just who do these people think they are?
We have some very fine Police in Thailand who are more than capable of handling this.
Thailand is a Sovereign State, so just back-off with your "Colonial Mentality" and leave it to the Royal Thai Police, instead of trying to run rough-shod over our investigative team. Time to simply accept the fact that "Britain no longer rules the waves"...or anything else these days and certainly never has, nor will it ever, rule Thailand.
You are mistaken if you think British people will stand by while an investigation into the murder of two of their fellow citizens is botched by corrupt officials. If there are "very fine Police in Thailand who are more than capable of handling this," why has the job been not been given to them?
The eyes of the world are on Thailand now, and they are half-full of horror and half-full of disbelief.

BANGKOK: -- A British newspaper reported that a petition with more than 65,000 signatures would soon be handed to Prime Minister David Cameron's Office
That preening fathead won't do anything unless there are votes in it for him.

Well, well:

Lie detector anyone??
Love to c them results!!
Police included :-/
Yeah, except the 'lie detector' does nothing of the sort and is no better than flipping a coin.

Listening to this on the BBC World Service this morning, the BBC were very critical of the investigation and openly sceptical about the results. That's pretty unusual for the WS, which is usually very reluctant to criticise law enforcement agencies and foreign government bodies.

Thai Police find a suspect who confesses and you still don't believe it.
I know a thai person could not do these crimes.
Thai PoliceThat's why.

pairing tourists with a local minder at tourist destinations, was also being discussed

Reasonable explanations.
1. He's high as a kite and paranoid people are following him.
2. He's pissing people off to the point that they will kill him just to shut him up.
3. He wants attention because he's a drama queen.
If he knew who did it don't you think he would have told everyone on fb already. Best you do go home.
Definitely many doubts to his integrity from local farang on Koh Tao.
Ah, well. That changes everything. If the thailand expat sweetie-wife gossip mill has taken against him, why bother with a trial?

How many 7/11 workers could you borrow a phone from that have INTERNATIONAL call availability, to call your mum and sister?
BS - He's lying.
How many 7/11 workers do you know that have enough credit to call International numbers?
Even my own wife rarely has anymore then 200-300 baht credit on her phone, and I don't tend to have much more in mine either when I'm at home.
If you dial 006 it costs 3 baht a minute to a landline. . Hmm even on 100 Baht you could speak for more than 30 minutes. Also he was in a shop that may sell top ups. So from this you assume he is lying. Good work Sherlock! Glad you aren't running this investigation.
More and more funny by the minute!!
So this guy is running for his life with the bloodthirsty Thai mafia hot on his heels. Runs to a convenience story, buys a top up, takes a pic of the mafiaguys, connects to his FB account and post the pics. During all this time the "mafia" is patiently waiting outside for the police to arrive an hour later!!
Biggest give-away is the claim, that they threatened to kill him by hanging?? Anyone a little familar with Thai ways, would know a threat of a knife or a gun, absolutely yes. But hanging, never ever!!
I can't adequately express my contempt for this post.

I hope your sons or brothers are never in this position, in a foreign country hounded by gangsters and refused protection from the police. You who sit in your condos and guesthouses crowing that this boy is lying, I hope you never know what that feels like.

Yes assuming the investigators act honestly,
Yeah.

Good to hear the Burmese were cleared. For quick closure I hope the evidence ends with the backpacker. Less damage to Thailand's identity for visitors. At least every inch of a break that Thailand gets now is a good break.
I'm pretty sure the police are currently designing evidence carefully to 'end with the backpacker'.
Two people brutally murdered, a suspected rape and all some people can think of is damage to Thailand's precious tourist industry.
If the truth is damaging, perhaps Thailand needs to do something about it?

I'm with Thaksin. Round all the dealers and users up and rid the earth of these scum. They have no purpose in society and bring nothing but misery because of their selfish acts. Yes this won't be liked by the tree huggers but I couldn't give a shiny stool what they think.
Yeah, imagine that. Someone freely providing goods and services to consenting, willing consumers.
Scum, innit.
Which other retailers do you think should be shot in the street, 1970s-Kampuchea-style?

'Maintenance Fee' for All Foreign Tourists Proposed by Tourism Governor
in Thailand News
Posted
Laos is landlocked, severely criminalises relationships between Laos and foreigners and most of the hiking land is off-limits due to 'land mines' so unsuitable for most European holidays and Cambodia still has a (partly deserved) fearsome reputation for violent crime. Vietnam: maybe once, but despite the natural beauty of the landscape, the dirt-cheap booze and the endlessly surprising food, Vietnam is a hard country to visit because of the greed of its tourist sector. Thailand has always been the big draw.
Southeast Asia in general will be hurt Thailand's greed.
I'm also guessing that the Chinese government has enough clout in the region to negotiate an exemption for Chinese tourists.
