  1. Went only through the first 4 pages and the last. So I'm not too sure whether somebody mentioned already the uncontrolled constructions during the last years in Samui (where I live and work for a rented resort with positive figures since April...). IMO the government has nothing to do with "rescueing the industry"; the local government bodies which issued permits for illegal constructions against tea money are to be blamed and prosecuted. Tourists coming to the island for years are not coming back as they do not recognize Samui any longer. Almost every beach plot is built up, three storeys - 15 mtr. from the beach..., wall enchroachment onto publich beach land, stinking main road in Chaweng, "luxury" hotels built on the ring road...Most of the business people who might cry now had no idea of helping the tourism industry of Thailand - they were greedy and nothing else.

  2. Samui Buri is already gone to Mercure - wonder why.

The article states that after the tsunami Samui hotels mushroomed - a fact - but dind't the builders think about years after the tsunami? No they didn't! Now we have hotel buildings with 3 storeys close to the beach (not totally legal...) with almost no guests. Samui can blame everything - the yellow shirts, the red shirts, the financial crisis, the swine flu... but Samui should start blaming herself.

  3. The "fun" is continuing - my guests who are visiting this holiday resort island came to Lamai and not to Chaweng - assuming that Lamai offers less "fun" (noise at night!). They do not care about the money some people are blasting into the air - they care about their relaxation. When they don't get it they search for another place/another country where they might get it.

It's easy to state "we do live on a holiday resort island and fun is permitted". ...

  4. For the third night in a row some people here in north Lamai think that it's fun to disturb other people till 1.30 with crackers/fireworks. I do not care about fireworks at any day at 10 pm for 15 minutes - all fireworks shops have to make a living - but why some id... start at 8 pm with a loud bang, stop for 30 minutes, start again and keep this schedule for another five hours is beyond my understanding. Any suggestions to get this problem solved??

  5. Lack of creativity - yes, due to education and culture. Learning is by heart and not with brain, respect for elders is a must and blocks own thoughts too. And IF there are own thoughts they are not allowed to get pronounced.

Lots of shops of the same nature are even an economic rule - only those with the best service, quality and prices will survive. But certainly I doubt that this is the reason for a row of massage saloons....

  6. As I stopped understanding Physics when it came to electricity most of the above is like Chinese to me...

But one thing I know: since 2001 we did not loose any electronic appliance in Lamai - even without UPS's due to voltage fluctuations. Before in New Delhi the fluctuations killed almost all of them - even with UPS. We did one thing in Lamai as we had 3 phases but only one was used - we put AC's, computers, washing machine, dryer etc. on all of the three phases and it's working.

Might be not the most helpful reply - but I do not have a reason for a "phobia".

  7. Could not make out the location - but guess the people complained that there was no sea! And not no beach. This summer we had amazingly high water in north of Lamai - less moon landscape than in other summers. There are several reefs around Samui which protect the coast during high water as the waves are breaking before reaching the coast in full swing. It is still nature... and there are two sides of the medal. Jet skis have to be behind the reefs.

Trying to get money back seems to be a kind of a sport nowadays. If the hotel is o.k. but the surroundings are not as expected they try.

  8. Was waiting for a songtheaw to get for 20 Baht from north Lamai to central Lamai. In former years I simply walked - but there are too many construction trucks on the road nowadays.... Several taxis horned during my waiting time but I shook the head and none of them stopped. If they stop I'll tell them that I'll only get in when they use the meter...., might have a similar "discussion".
