  1. The problem is if its discovered that someone is HIV positive. Its another silly rule. If you look at the ruling it also includes people who have Yellow Fever and Leprosy. Maybe its supposed to relate to people coming for Africa. Hello! I didn’t see many lepers on my flight back form the UK. But you see plenty down Sukhumvit Road.

  2. Many teachers don’t make 60,000 baht. Thai Unis etc pay 25k you may get something like free accommodation, meals. The question is how much can you live on? Working in a Uni is very prestigious in Thailand but not very well paid. Try www.ajarn.com

PS the above post may or may not be correct. Know one knows. Thai government Unis, Rajabhats pay 25,000 k. So the 40,000 – 60,000 baht a month rule can’t apply. Unless they plan to give everyone a pay rise, which I doubt. Maybe the government ministries haven’t thought that far, which I suspect.

Most likely the pay minimums apply to business workers.

  3. If you are married in Thailand it is very easy and quick to get a divorce. Did it myself a year last November. But don’t know about if you have been married in another country. All you need to do for Thai marriages is turn up at the registration office with the correct paperwork. Both of the participants need to be in agreement and on good terms at the time of the divorce. Sign the papers and get a divorce certificate each.

  4. The age of consent in Japan is 13 I think. Sometimes in bars I may talk to a bargirl who is 18 or 19 and I think no I would rather stick with my girlfriend who is 34 because the generation gap is too much.

  5. I have lived here for sometime and speak Thai to some extent. Yet I find day to day dealings with Thai people very frustrating. You speak English they don’t understand, you speak Thai they think you are speaking English. They plain can’t be bothered to communicate with someone who does not speak perfect Thai. This is in Bangkok. I have a much more agreeable experience outside Bangkok when the people don’t speak any English!

Axel has a point – but not the one I think he/she is making. In the UK if we put all the languages that people speak on the signs you would not be able to see the road. The UK and the US etc. are international. We can understand people who speak English badly because we are more used to hearing it that way. Thais find it difficult to understand Thai spoken badly. By come on I am making an effort!

  6. The Thai people are in a dilemma. They want us and our money and they don’t want us because they think that we are somehow exploiting them. Ordinary Thai people do want foreigners here – I really believe this is true. Many Thais have fallen for the skillful manipulation of what happened in 1997 – that foreigners caused the crash and so hurt them financially. They forget tourism is the biggest foreign currency earner and some of them forget why we come here – because the Thai people are friendly and nice. If the government changes that tourists will stop coming. Try not to be too depressed by the present government they are not the real Thailand. The real Thailand is that woman and those kids you have.

  7. Well, after I trumpeted Big John’s pies in a previous post (what a mess that made – I should get a trumpet) I finally got down to his pie shop on Thong Lor. Had an excellent Aussie style burger and chips. The shop is pleasant and clean the service good and you get the added entertainment of hearing Big John having an argument with someone over the plumbing – great! And he has cheap rooms to rent as well so I hear.

  8. Until Thailand gets it’s act together to stop people who are not teachers working as teachers some people will exploit the possibilities. Is it a criminal act to break a law that is not enforced? If the state itself will not or cannot bring itself to enforce it’s own laws should people have any respect for them or it?

  9. Easy chili.

    One onion – chopped.

    One tin of baked beans.

Some mince or alternatively some chopped sausage.

    Pack chili seasoning.

Fry the mince or sausage then add the onion. Add the baked beans and stir in about half of the chili seasoning. Let it warm through. Serve with rice or crusty bread and butter.

If you like you can add some chopped chilies or chili powder.

  10. I hope they don’t take it too seriously! I post things here and on other sites that are not always my true feeling because I imagine at the time it may be funny or provocative etc. But I would not be living here if I did not like the people, country and way of life.
