  1. Anyone take into consideration, when buying land or houses in Thailand what'll happen in the not to near distant future?

The prices of airline tickets are going to rocket and they'll take less passengers for fuel efficiency etc...

I was just thinking as it aint gonna be that long away and I'm buying a a piece of land and a house etc in Southern Thailand and know that in even in 30 years I wont be that old... Kinda worrying....

    Any thoughts?

Maybe I'm just talking complete shit, just thought it might be interesting to hear some points of view..

............when the oil runs out??? - it ain't going to be in your or my lifetime, that is for sure - the high prices currently are not a reflection of shortage, rather speculation and to some extent cost of extraction. But be under no illusion, there is still billions and billions of untapped barrells down there and a lot that has not being located but is known to be down there.

Yes, there are still billions of barrels down there and they were passed-over years ago as being too dear to extract. When the current, "easy" oil starts to get low, the oil companies will have to back to the "difficult" oil and, boy, you look at the pump price then.

In the meantime, devoting more and more agricultural land to growing palm oil when the world's population is growing and needs more food, not less, and said land is diminishing anyway due to urbanisation, just seems like madness.

  2. Actually, I remember carrying-out a similar experiment years ago when driving a Land Rover. It was Summer and I was driving with the ventilator at the base of the windscreen open for a bit of relief. There was a fly hanging on quite well and I increased the speed to see when "breakaway" would occur. The little blighter hung-on really well and the Land Rover was nearing terminal velocity. Then it dawned on me that by having the ventilator open, the fly was being subjected to the airstream in a "compressive" way rather than in a "shear" fashion as the air that would have travelled along the bonnet and then swept up the windscreen, was entering the interior instead. So I closed the flap and WHOOSH off he went. Kept me amused for a few miles.

  3. Well, I thought I'd have a go at this poll just out of curiosity.

    Me = 51

    TW = 27

There are two things for certain in our case:

    1. She sure as hel_l didn't marry me for my money; I'm almost totally borassic!

    2. I can honestly say that I would have married her if she had been ten or twenty years older.

Sorry to have to explode two cherished stereotypes here on TV. :o

  4. A thread from GH called 'Yippee'! I just had to check it out. So unlike you. Fully Justifiable though!

    Have a great time...

You took the words right out of my mouth, Tiggs... :o

  5. I think that what tends to get my goat is when a farang assumes that just because you both happen to be foreigners, you're automatically going to hit-it-off, a sort-of "Thank goodness; you're the first friendly face I've seen all day" and then proceed to tell you their life-story and generally run the place down. I had the great misfortune to be sat next to one of these knob-jockeys on my last flight back from England. Still gives me nightmares... :o

  6. F8 to boot from the Windows XP CD (press R to run the repair section) boot into the repair console (some patience may require), and then delete c:\Windows\System32\gdi32.dll, and then copy the other gdi32.dll (from c:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386) to this directory.

Ok, thanks for that, Condo_bk; I'll give it a go. :o

I just installed SP3 it hung up so I forced a restart and went into Safe Mode. Once it finished loading in safe mode I restarted through there and it is fine now.

Is this what you saw, Sakeopete?

STOP: c0000139 [Entry Point Not Found] The procedure entry point GdiGetBitmapBitsSize could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll

It's what I'm seeing now on my laptop (I'm using my wife's at the mo) after letting it reboot as part of the installation. So how do I get into Safe Mode, then? I know how to force a restart but this screen appears right after the boot screen. Where do I go then?

    Thanks for any help! :D

No it just stopped while loading my desktop so after about 20 minutes I restarted it in safe mode, once it had loaded I restarted it from safe mode and all is fine. On my Dell safe mode is F8 hope that helps.

Cheers, Sakeopete. Nah, I'm not getting as far as the desktop, I'm afraid. Thanks for the info though. :D

  7. STOP: c0000139 [Entry Point Not Found] The procedure entry point GdiGetBitmapBitsSize could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll

    Thanks for any help! :D

I had exactly the same problem, refer to: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=184886

You should replace your copy of GDI32.DLL in the "Windows\System32" directory with another copy in the "Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386" directory. The correct file version is: 5.1.2600.3311

Thanks for that, Condo_bk; heartening news. But how do I get into the thing to make the changes? I've been lucky all these years it would seem as I don't know how to get into Windows when it's 'hung' like this. :o

  8. For non-immigrant "O" and "B," the visa alone does not allow working (there are not many visa types which do); it is the work permit that allows the work assuming you have a visa type for which one can be issued (you do, but many schools and even low-level immigration types are less familiar with non-imm. "O" and may incorrectly tell you to convert to non-imm. "B," which would be a big mistake for someone like you- stick to your guns).

You may find it is harder to get a work permit if you don't have a degree, but as far as I know there are still ways to do it- let us know how it goes.

Thanks for that, IJWT. Yep, I was talking just now to a mate who teaches at Loei Uni and he said pretty much the same as you. I'll let you know how it pans out. :o

    to the OP

Your school usually does the work for you fortunately. Co-ordinating the documents needed for the ministries of immigration, labour and education (TCT if need a teacher licence) is very involved. Normally there's a chain of events: immigration needs to see an application for a work permit to extend visa etc. If you are going to work for a langauge school, university or governemnet school the TCT's proposed new regulations probably won't apply to you anyway. If you're going to work for a private school and don't have a degree and live in the boonies, the director drinks chivas with the director of education and immigration every Sat night at the local karaoke, so mai me pen ha (no problem). Thais are very pragmatic and don't let rules get in the way of a solution.

It's a government, vocational college and yep, it's in the ulu so I'm betting on the 'Chivas' approach! We'll see...

    Thanks for your help. :D

  10. Thanks to all the above!

Nope, no degree but they don't seem too bothered about that. In fact, they approached me knowing (through a mutual friend) that I didn't have one. My query was more about work permits, visas etc. I know that my current visa does not allow work of any kind. So a work permit 'converts' it into a visa that allows work, yeah?

As you can see, am pretty clueless with regard to this; when I came out here, work was not something that I had intended to do again but I fancy this place and being more involved in the community. The money's handy as well, of course... :o

    Thanks for your patience. :D

  11. Many thanks for sharing that with us, Guemlum. I'd often wondered what the occasion entailed here and now, thanks to your well-written and informative post, I'm a lot wiser.

I have the nasty feeling that my wife's grandfather is not long for this world so your post is, for me, timely. I'll be interested to see if there are any differences between your part of Issan and mine.

    Once again, thanks. :o

  12. Hi all. My first time to post here and I have a very basic question; in fact, it's so basic that I looked in the pinned topics first as I assumed it would be covered there. Couldn't spot it though. Ok, it was probably right under my nose...

I'm in LOS on a Multiple-Entry, Non-Immigrant, type "O" and it looks almost certain that I'm going to be offered a job in the next week, teaching at a nearby vocational college. What do I need to do to ensure I'm working legally?

    Thanks for any help! :o

  13. Interesting to learn that CVT has obviously progressed tremendously. But then so it should in 25 yrs! As mickS, i remember the early 80's Volvo 3 series with the DAF inherited variomatic transmission..... all rev & no go.

I believe the early automatic UK Ford Fiestas were CVT also, but used steel belts in preference to the old DAF elastic bands?

Yeah, spot-on. :o It was really disconcerting; like driving a car with a badly slipping clutch. There was a knack to it, to be fair, but I didn't like the car anyway. As you say, they pinched it from DAF when they took them over. Remember the DAF TV adverts?

"Forward to go forward, back to go back!"

  14. Thanks guys. Yep, the Jazz sounds like fun although I'll probably have a go a cabby in both, just to see. I was not too keen on the idea of CVTs as I have dire memories of pedalling a friend's old Volvo around for a while in the 80s which has CVT. I should have realised that you can trust Honda to get something right.

I should imagine that with the release of the new Jazz, deals are going to be keen on the remaining Mk 1s, yeah?

  15. Heard an interview with Interpol spokeswoman on CNN tonight she said the man was shown in approx 800 images abusing SE Asian boys who appeared to be between ages 6 and 10. They also said there is a link on the Interpol website to report possible sightings and identities and you can do so anonymously.

    There you go.

  16. Well, I just prefer manuals, that's all. They're more involving, more interesting; I don't want everything done for me! :o

As for the new Jazz, I think it ditches the CVT transmission of the first model in favour of a conventional torque converter. I'm sure that, as autos go, it's great but I'd rather have a manual. 'Spose I'll have to settle for an auto if there's no choice.
