  1. Enough to make the Thais have to think of some other excuse for mucking up :o

Seriously, if you can speak "phaw chai dai" that is no mean achievement, it's a very difficult language.

I think the average farang probably has very poor pronounciation. But...

On more than one occasion I've had a hel_l of a time communicating with a bus driver, clerk, or shop assistant in Thai, only to then have the Thai behind me tell him/her what I just said. :D Maybe it's a 50/50 thing with me. Am I the only one?

no, i think that pretty much sums up my experience to a T. it is incredibly frustrating to deal with. i don't mind trying to speak and converse in thai at all, but times like that make me think they want to keep their language all to themselves and i am happy to oblige.

  2. my girlfriend speaks and reads english quite well yet says "i not like when farang speak thai".

i use that as my excuse, along with the fact that no one else in the world speaks thai.

i do, however, practice my bar girl thai every chance i get as that is the only time this language is made even

remotely fun for me. having taken courses in most of the worlds major languages including spanish, french, russian,

japanese, portuguese and even norwegian i just can't seem to get past the idea that most thais that i encounter on

a daily basis just don't seem to want to speak thai with me whereas any of the other languages i mentioned, having

(or attempting) a conversation is not only educational and enlightening but amusingly awkward and still fun.

  3. making my first self propelled visa run to penang this week. anyone here that has driven across lately? i will be driving a vehicle

owned by the company i am going to penang for the non-imm B visa for and have the permission letter in my possession, obviously

not going to be indicating i work for them already but very curious if i am likely to be pulled aside and scrutinized for anything in particular.

how much should i expect to spend for 2-3 days worth of malaysian insurance?

do i need to produce any particular documents in order to get malaysian insurance or can i just expect to waltz in and back out?

any good online source for a printable map? i've googled everything and come up with no highway maps.

    thanks in advance

  4. why should the govt interfere in competition??? Sorry, I think I am missing a step here.... someone builds an airport, creates industry, and now is making a profit from it.... I thought that was the aim of capitalism?>

currently at usm there is no competition. my suggestion does not interfere with competition in any way shape or form, it encourages it.

BA has ultimate control over the number of flights and the landing fees associated with those flights. i have no idea what the current landing fees are but i am certain they are not competitive otherwise other carriers would be here. a tax credit to offset those fees would not only encourage competition but give BA the chance to throw off some of their less profitable flight times to other carriers and still collect a landing fee.

anyway, i'm sure BA has done numerous studies on the profitability of the bkk-usm route and has determined they are operating at max efficiency and profitability at their current pricing structure and would be losing profits by lowering fares and taking more passengers. we all know that thais are famous for long term planning and not simply looking at todays cash account.

  5. if the thai gov't is concerned about competition on the bkk-usm route they could simply offer a tax credit to any airline that flies into usm which is based on the amount of the landing fees and charges that BA charges them for the privelege of using their airport.

no second airport needed, here or on pha ngan. each airline would then have to be competitive or be left out.

  6. passport in Thailand is the most efficient government department you will see - anywhere. Three days processing time.

Get her there today (Wed) and you should have it by Friday if you pick it up yourself (assuming 3 days includes the day you apply)

thanks for the replies. she is on her way there now. my concern is her expired passport. keeping my fingers crossed as i would sure

like to have her there for the border crossings (not to mention the lack of anything nice to look at in penang )

  7. searches here turned up nothing but farang with expired passports going to malaysia, so, here is the short story.

thai girl friend is aware that i am on my way out on sunday to malaysia for visa and as i am driving i wanted to take her with me.

any time i asked if she had passport the response of course was always, have have. now sunday is rapidly approaching and she

produces her passport only to find it expired in october of 07. i know in the western world i can get a new passport on the quick tip but how about for her? as we are (or i am) going to penang or KL for the first time driving i wanted to bring her along.

can anyone here offer any suggestions for getting her expired passport renewed that quickly? thanks in advance.

  8. Not to worry, there will be new attemps. Probably before the end of the season..... :o

perhaps, just as there will always be someone here ready to criticize, mock or lambaste others for attempting to do something new, or even something old with a new twist.

i will be opening a new beer bar with ladies who smoke cigars whilst wearing a nuns habit, in lamai next month.

i tell you this now so you will have time to sharpen your vernacular daggers in advance, more thought has been put into this endeavor than you could possibly imagine.

  9. The disc golf which just recently closed was run by different people who used to run the old one. The most recent one (just below the Khao Pra Seaview Resort) had it's soft opening on October 7th. I know, I was there. I played a round with the new guy AND the old part-owner and heard all the stories. IMO, "location, location, location" contrbuted to closing it. The way to get there was flooded most of late-October thru mid-December and taking a taxi there involved a lot of hunting. Beautiful view though.

location was certainly a factor that prevented the thai owner from putting any guests in his hotel rooms and going 250 million baht in debt and leaving many other unpaid debts to both thai and farang he had done resort related business with in the 2 years preceding his addition of the frisbee golf course. i am sure he will correct this very soon by attempting to borrow another hundred million or so for the addition of another hotel on the same property. his 20% stake in buddy beer lamai is now up for sale for a fraction of what he paid and his solar lighting company is no longer in business.

facts are not as common as common sense, which in thailand has proven to be a rare commodity.

  10. Is this in the same are as where the new disc golf course is? Is that still running too? I haven't seen advertising for it anywhere except for the grand opening party article in the Samui Express

No dont think so. Closed already from the looks off it. At least there dont seem to be any people there.

But the old disc-golf is still up and running i think. And thats been going for some years so that might be a better one to check out.... :D .

Boy are we off topic in this thread?? But at least we have fun! :o

    Mattias ,

If you are talking about the old Disc Golf in Bophut hills, that is also long gone, it is Now a golf course. Bophut hills Golf Course 9 holes.

Ok, thanks for that correction roo, i actually thought they where still doing the disc-golf, but i just pass there occasionaly and see there is people. So what we learned here is that disc-golf buisness is probably not a good buisness-idea on this island then. Allthough im pretty sure within a few months somebody else come with a "new approach" as always. And as always they pay the "reporters" in samui express to print "articles" (all writen by the owners, same as "foodreviews"). And then close down.......Bankrupsy.

How many times we have to watch the story over and over again? It always amuse me though, to hear the newbies with all their new ideas and new approaches and even when you tell them that its all been done before and dont waste your time and money, they still think their "new idea" is sooooooooo good. I been an expats for only 2 years and i think i already seen 50 people take over crap resorts with no potential what so ever, bars that changed owners 10 times/year. You warn them but they keep claiming "i have free food once a week so i make it" or "i put in maitservice, thats going to change it all". Sad, and amusing, at the same time. If some of these newbies only took the time to at least read Koh samui forum in Thaivisa for half a year before coming here, probably alot of the bankrupsy could be avoided.

Mega off topic by now, but people in westernworld reading this thread before coming here and start up discgolf, hope you learned!!!

    :D

what amuses me is people commenting with certainty on things they really have no actual knowledge of. in fact, if you would have actually read through the thread and perhaps applied a bit of reading comprehension you may have discerned that the THAI owner of the resort that frisbee golf was a part of is now insolvent and had to borrow money to host a party which was, by all accounts, a bust, in a last ditch effort to rescue his 2 hotels. 1000 baht entrance fee, 3000 baht bottles of vodka and 750 baht sang som buckets perhaps were a bit too much for the average party goer but i'm sure sounded appealing to the thai owner and thai party promoter pre-party when multiplied by the thousands of people they expected to attend.

mega off topic now, but people in the western world reading this thread or any other, perhaps a moments pause prior to hitting the add reply before commenting on things they know nothing of, hope you learned!!!

  11. Can anyone give me a general idea on how much a two bedroom house with a/c and ubc is around the Bophut area? Monthly long term rental. And any comments on living around there also would be much appreciated.

    Thank you very much

sent a pm. very low end probably in the neighborhood of 15k but more likely 20k and on up. really depends on what you can see from your house and what else you can do while there (pool, etc). long term is probably considered 3-6 months minimum.

  12. Actually the WP3 is confirmation that you get a WP.

Speak to your lawyer, do not try to do this by your self.

And the first Non-B you get in Penang is only for 3-months.

When you have the 3-months Non-B, you will get your WP.

Bring your WP to Penang (yes, you must go one more time) and you get your 1-year Non-B (maybe...)

    reason edit: more info

Yeah, i think that is a maybe. After my first 3 month non-b i got just a six month (3 month 2 entries). Probably i would have got a year after that ( or at least a multiple entry non- :o , thats what i was told. Never saw the end of that story since i thought it was easier to use my wife for a non-o.

Anyway, a bit old thread so perhaps mr allen already solved his problems. Otherwise i do highly reccomend the visa section where a guy called lopburi3 knows practicly everything about visa-rules and post regulary.

    Good luck

i never had any wp3 when i got my last work permit. had a stack of company papers showing location etc but definetely never applied for a work permit prior to going to penang and still got my non-imm B.

  13. Question 2 . Songkran is April 14th and 15th.

Congratulations for making the move up from Pattaya. :o

    Thank you, just need 1 & 3 now :D

question 1 i recommend seascape beach resort, south chaweng beach road, beautiful beach and clean modern rooms.

question 3 try tropical murphys, always very busy but in a good pub sort of way.

  14. i wouldnt be too concerned about this party happening again, it was a huge loss for someone that was desperate for a huge influx of cash. all the money spent to promote the event was borrowed, the event was a disaster, attendance was very poor and half of them were non paying. lol @ connected. this man is about as connected as my big toe is to this keyboard.

look for a legitimate international hotel chain to be taking over that property soon, at a very big bargain discount price.
