  1. Jasmine wages broadband price war

By: Bangkokpost.com Jasmine International Plc, the parent of the provincial fixed-line telephone provider TT&T, has sparked a broadband price war with the introduction of a 3-megabit internet service for 590 baht a month.

The company plans to invest 3 billion baht to expand its internet provision by 300,000 ports nationwide over the next two years, bringing its broadband coverage up to 80% from 60% of the population. Currently, it has 500,000 ports in the provinces plus 100,000 in Bangkok.

CEO Pete Bodharamik said Jasmine expects the number of its broadband subscribers to reach 700,000 by the end of this year, from 400,000 last year.

I'm canceling True as soon as this comes out. Who else?

  2. There are 2 sides of the tracks here. Were on the good side. Most of these guys have no comprehension whatsoever of a normal relationship with a Thai woman. Like the guy said before most of the advice you'll get comes from guys that are only with prostitutes. Harsh truth for some, but you'll rarely if ever get good advice from them. Talk to a Thai male of the same class and he can give you some better advice. Don't pay attention to the horror stories as most are involved with prostitutes. As for Thailand Fever, It should be called "Uneducated Lao Fever".

  3. ROHINGYA

UN asks Thailand for access to Rohingya boat people

    By Deutsche Presse Agentur

Bangkok - Amid reports that the Thai navy forced hundreds of Rohingya boat people out to sea last month, leaving up to 500 missing, the United Nations on Tuesday asked the government for access to 126 surviving boat people now in Thai custody.

"We have asked the Thai government for access to two groups totalling 126 Rohingya boat people who are in custody in southern Thailand in order to assess their situation and determine whether any of them are in need of international protection," said a statement issued by United Nations High commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Last week the UNHCR expressed strong concern over allegations that the Thai navy towed hundreds of Rohingya boat people out to sea and left them to die. Rohingyas are a Muslim minority group from Myanmar's Arakan State who have been denied citizenship by the ruling junta.

The Thai navy on December 18 and 30 pushed out to sea at least 992 Rohingya boat people in boats without engines or sufficient supplies reports based on survivors' testimonies said. An estimated 400 to 500 of the boat people are believed missing and feared drowned.

The UNHCR has been informed that 126 Rohingya are being held in Thai military custody after being rescued in Thai waters.

Their testimony would be crucial for determining what happened last month, which is now the subject of an army investigation. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva requested the investigation in to the Rohingya push-back case after talking to human rights groups at a meeting Monday at which the issue was raised.

Thai Army Commander-in-Chief General Anupong Paochinda, while confirming Tuesday that the military will conduct the investigation, at the same time said he was confident no abuses had been committed against the Rohingya.

The Arakan Project, a non-governmental organisation that monitors treatment of the Rohingyas, has provided evidence that the Thai Navy pushed some 992 Rohingyas in engineless boats back onto the high seas from southern Thailand.

Chris Lewa, coordinator of the Arakan Project, said there may have been more push-backs that she was unaware of. "If some of the people hadn't survived we would never have known about these cases," said Lewa.

News that the Thai military was pushing Rohingya refugees out to sea came to light last month when the Indian Navy on December 18 rescued 107 people from a boat who claimed that they had been put to sea in the engineless craft by the Thai Navy and set adrift.

According to the survivors, about 300 of the 412 refugees had drowned when they jumped overboard to try to swim to shore.

Another group of 580 Rohingyas was allegedly shoved back to sea on December 30 in five boats after the engines were removed, said Lewa.

Of this group, some 193 were rescued near Indonesia's Sabang Island in Aceh province on January 7 and an another boat with 150 onboard was rescued off Tillanchang Island, India, on January 10.

On January 6, another 81 Rohingyas were rescued by Thai fishermen, and have since been put under Thai military custody again, said Lewa.

The Arakan Project was still checking whether this group was part of the 580 pushed back on December 30.

There are still between 400 to 500 of the refugees unaccounted for, she said.

The Thai miliary has denied the accusations, although officials acknowledge that they see the Myanmar-Muslims as a security threat, suspecting them of coming to Thailand to join Thai-Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand's Pattani area.

"Definitely the reason for this is national security," said Lewa, speculating on the Thai military's drastic measures.

Lewa, who has worked with the Rohingya for years, said she was convinced the majority had landed in Thailand en route to Malaysia, where they can look for employment, paying brokers about 1,000 dollars for the passage.

The Rohingyas, numbering about 750,000 in Arakan, are stateless people, having been denied citizenship in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Lewa called for Thailand to find a regional solution to the new wave of boat people.

"It's a regional issue," said Lewa. "Thailand cannot solve it alone, but should collaborate with the counties concerned and international agencies to find a solution to this problem."

    The UN agrees.

"Because the plight of the Rohingyas is a regional problem, UNHCR is urgently seeking to discuss with the Thai government ways that all concerned countries can address the root causes that impel the Rohingya to put their lives at risk on such perilous journeys," said the UNHCR statement.

  4. With a non-O and your story I guess you will be applying for an extension of stay based on marriage with a Thai national.

What they will do is look at all the papers and have an interview to see if you and your wife really live together. If everything is right they will give you an extension of 30 days and send the file to Bangkok for approval. After 30 days you come back and get the rest of the year. Don't forget the photo's of you and the misses.

Your first application for an extension of stay is considered as a 90 day report and after that you will have to file a report of where you stay every 90 days. (They will probably give you a form and tell you when to make your first report. At most offices you can do that by mail).

We live in Bangkok. Suan Plu immigration is where were going tomorrow. Maybe it will be faster than 30 days for approval? Thanks for the info guys.

  5. So I'm going to extend my Non-O for 1 year tomorrow and I have a few questions. What is the process? I have all of the documents so I'm 100% sure I will get it. I know we go to the information desk and he points me where I need to go(upstairs i think?) I know we have an interview again and do I come back in 30 days or? If I have to come back in 30 days will I get another 30 day extension for waiting? Fill me in a little bit guys on what takes place for the 1 year extension and also I have to report every 90 days correct? Thanks in advance.

  6. To save making another thread. On the TM.7 form to get the 1 year extension on my first Non-O, on the line where it says "I wish to apply for an extension of temporary stay in the Kingdom for another period of................................. Ok so do i put 365 days? I'm not sure thanks in advance.

    365 days is correct

    Thanks alot :o

  7. Volunteer work does fall under the o category.

    - other activities (Category "O") as follows:

to stay with the family, to perfrom duties for the state enterprise or social welfare organizations, to stay after retirement for the elderly, to receive medical treatment, to be a sport coach as required by Thai Government, to be a contestant or witness for the judicial process.

The above can be found at following link by clicking the visa button. Link takes you to list of emabassy/consulates worldwide.

    http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2712.php

To do the work requires a work permit. You would have to be involed with an oranization that is doing it to sponsor you work permit. That would also simplify the application process if you have documation from them.

Suggest you start doing doing some research to find an organization you could work under.

You don't want to have the visa issued until shortly before traveling because it is only valid for a period of time.

The fixed date you are talking about is on the visa application so by the time you are ready to travel you will already have a date set.

You can mail the application in shortly before you are ready to travel or go to a consulate.

To save making another thread. On the TM.7 form to get the 1 year extension on my first Non-O, on the line where it says "I wish to apply for an extension of temporary stay in the Kingdom for another period of................................. Ok so do i put 365 days? I'm not sure thanks in advance.

  8. Thai troops wounded in clash with Cambodia - Army spokesman

    By The Nation

One Cambodian soldier killed a clash : Thai Army spokesman

Four Thai troops were injured during a clash with Cambodian troops along Thai-Cambodia border on Wednesday, Army spokesman Sansern Kaeowkamnerd said.

One Khmer soldier was killed during the clashes.

The Thai troops were suffered from sharpnels of explosives and were rushed to a hospital in Si Sa Kaet province.

They were injured in one of two clashes with Cambodia at Pa Mo I Daeng in Si Sa Ket province. Another clash Phu Ma Khur caused no casualty.

They were first casualties of the Thai-Cambodia border conflicts which were flared up after Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen issued an ultimatum to open war if Thai troops were not withdrawn from the disputed area near the temple.

However his ultimatum was shot down as the Thai army vowed to remain troops.

  9. Cambodia claims new border clash with Thailand

(BangkokPost.com) - Cambodian officials were quoted by news wire services that Thai and Cambodian troops exchanged gunfire along a disputed border for about 10 minutes on Wednesday afternoon.

The firefight took place at Kantalak district, Si Sa Ket province.

"Cambodian and Thai troops are opening fire at each other now," Cambodian Brig Gen Bun Thean told AFP from the scene.

Reuters photographer Chor Sokunthea at the scene was also quoted that he heard gun fire. "One rocket flew from Thailand over my head and landed. Now you can hear the fighting. They've opened fire," he was quoted as saying.

Preab Tan, governor of Cambodia's northern Preah Vihear province, also confirmed the fighting. "I can confirm there was fighting between Cambodians and Thais. The Thais fired at us first," Preab Tan told Reuters.

  10. Gunshots were heard near Preah Vihear Temple

Sound of several gunshots were heard near the disputed area at Preah Vihear area along the Thai-Cambodia border at about 2.45pm.

The area is in the heart of border tension between Thailand and Cambodia which re-emerged after Cambodia's premier threatened to open war if Thai troops were not withdrawn from the area.

  11. No retreat

    BangkokPost.com/dpa

Cambodia claimed on Tuesday that Thai soldiers pulled back from a tense border region, but Thai officials denied making any retreat. Thailand, officials

vowed, would not be the first to resort to force along the frontier.

Cambodian army Gen Chea Mon told the Reuters news agency: "They (Thailand) pulled out from our land" shortly before the so-called Phnom Penh ultimatum at noon. "The situation seems to have returned to normal. Our troops are occupying the area where the Thai troops have pulled out."

    Sheer nonsense, said Thai officials.

"We are still there," Prime Minister and Defense Minister Somchai Wongsawat said after a meeting with Army chief Gen Anupong Paochinda and foreign ministry officials.

Also: "We will not be the side to use force first," he told a press conference. "We will try to use negotiations."

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday shocked Thailand and foreign observers when he gave a deadline of noon on Tuesday to withdraw all its troops from an area adjacent to the Preah Vihear temple on the Thai-Cambodian border or face a "large-scale conflict."

Thai foreign ministry officials expressed surprise at Cambodia's claims that Thailand had already withdrawn its troops from the area, which has been the source of an increasingly volatile spat between the two countries since July.

"We were quite surprised by the withdrawal claim, because we think of this territory as being in Thailand, so why would we withdraw," said Thani Thongphakdi, a deputy spokesman for the foreign ministry.

In a statement issued earlier Tuesday, the foreign ministry also expressed "surprise" at Hun Sen's fighting words, noting that it went against the "sprit of neighborliness" between fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

After his meeting with Foreign Minister Sompong Amornvivat in Phnom Penh on Monday, Hun Sen told reporters that he had warned the Thais to withdraw their troops from the disputed area around the Preah Vihear temple or face fighting.

"They must move tonight or tomorrow. If they don't ... there will be fighting," he said.

Cambodia has been pressing to have the border spat settled by a regional or international body, but Thailand has insisted it could be handled bilaterally. (dpa)

  12. This is Thailand. Fantasy or Reality? Your choice :o I chose reality. I've never been desperate enough to marry or "date" a bargirl(prostitute). Of course the prostitutes are nicer, they want your money sexy man! If you want a normal Thai woman, then its almost like having a girlfriend/wife where you come from. Many choices here. You can either take the low road or the high road. Its entirely up to you.

  13. There is a nice Carrfour near where I live in Bangkok and they used part of the parking lot(HUGE PARKING LOT) for random little shops, but the customer base was more of a higher class if you know what I mean. Then out of nowhere they kicked all of the little shops out and put some wacky isaan "circus" fair in its place. So the customers changed of course. They would go inside carrfour and screw the place up with their 40 kids a piece running around everywhere and they have their crappy trucks outside blasting the same Lao songs over and over and over and over while throwing trash everywhere. At first the "circus" used to show up maybe 2 weeks out of the month and then move to another location, but now it seems they are there for good. I wonder how much the manager or whoever in charge was paid to let that happen.
