  1. so the rich get even richer and the poor get even poorer , more unevenly distributed wealth ..

Yep, that's where we are right now. Scary! The gap bewteen the rich and the poor is enormous and we allow this to happen. It happens to many Third World countries including Thailand. Only few super-rich families enjoy all benefits and advantages. Rich families got some pieces of that, and whatever left they throw it to the poor.

  2. How about removing lead, pesticides, etc. from  the food they eat and the air they breathe?

Leads level in BKK is 16 times higher than that of Los Angeles. Leads actually lower children's IQ and cause other sickness. You're right. Kids in BKK are getting slower and slower in developing their brains. Air here is also polluted, so they have lots of allergic problems.

We still haven't talked about stupid TV dramas, game shows and Internet gaming here. All of these are the real killers.

  3. They do both. Either pay off or flee the sence. Some are cought read-handed so were charged of mansloughter. But the most important thing is that the police can be bought. If the truck/bus owners bribe the police, they can completely rewrite the charge so from mansloughter becomes reckless driving or even less...

  4. i'm really confused.  all three of my learning disabilitied kids have iq's way over 100.  the neuro psychologist explained that the tests are based not on cultural or reading/writing skills therefore show a picture of intelligence in potential, and not actual learning... this is a far change for when iq tests were culturally based.  for instance... my first daughter had to point to different pictures and state what they are: on kibbutz, no one has a washing machine or dryer (its industrial) so she couldnt identify the pics so tis was 15 yrs ago.  now, the tests can be given to illiterate beduins and learning challenged kibbutzniks or kids of hi tec parents w/o these problems.

i think what happens in thailand is that kids have culturally deprived intelligence i.e. 'the potential is there but could not develop because as Kat says, they are ingenioius in all sorts fo things that i couldnt  ever figure out.... i see it with thai workers who are illiterate and seem rather narrow minded but once shown something once, use the info and take it many steps further which is the real test of intelligence (problem solving etc.)  from what i saw in the school system, definately culturally deprived (not culture like movie /tv, but not getting stimulation to learn)

so starting at nursery level may be good but what about continuity; from what i saw and hwat i hear , no chance and no change

Exactly! Government starts it, but never continued it. This is a known pattern of Thai government for years. They always have these wonderful, problem-solving solutions. The minute these plans are implemented, they're forgotten. There is no continuity in Thai society, I would say. Not only education, but also any other aspects. The potencial is there, and they don't have a clue to tweak it to the highest level.

  5. Mr. Toxin is just like another Chinese business man. Throw money in the pool and let see what happens, humm? I am ethnic Chinese like him. I am even a Hakka, like Mr. Taxin, but I think runing a country is not the same as runing his company. Money will not solve everything. The root of problem is still there.

  6. Good points from both of you! I agree with all of them, but:

    1. Thai government is more happy to support "Miss Universe 2005" than to help its schools.

    2. Thai teachers get "minimum" pays, almost the lowest government workers in the country, yet have long working hours. Why should they try harder?

    3. Cheating is almost spelled the same way as the word "smart" in Thai society. How can we change it?

  7. Ok, let's make it clear here:

    5 laws were broken:

    1. 4 people on one motorcycle

    2. no headlight

    3. no safety helmets

    4. driving against a normal traffic direction

    5. drunk

The truck driver broke no laws that I know. Ummm...yes indeed, this is Thailand.

  8. Thai students have never been encuraged to discuss the subjects they are studying, they are told. There are no discussion in the classes, not questions (most of the time). In a higher education sector is even worse. They are focusing on the professional subjects, the ones that they are going to use when they're graduated. There are no studies in moral and ethnical standards, or very few. That's why most Thai college students are graduated without any moral conerns regarding doing good things for the society. This is also a cause of corruption, immorality, lack of honesty in this society.

  9. BANGKOK: -- An increasing number of foreign students have enrolled in Thailand’s universities, according to a senior government official.

    FROM WHERE.WHY??

A bit more specifics is required here :

Which universities? How many enrolments in each? What faculties or departments?

    Countries of origin?

A statement like this is too general and creates a suspicion of propaganda or justification of existance.

Does anybody know where that info can bee found? I tried Ministry of Education but no joy.

edited for obvious spelling mistakes :D

Bumese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Laos, Cambodian students, I guess. :D Yeah, we need more info on this one. It sounds too good to be true here. Student exchange program, maybe? Very few Western students for sure.

I always made typos so editing is not required. :o

  10. The Subway system is run by two companies. It's a problem right there. A bit funny, but sad about the 2nd time was that in the first 3 days after the crash, subway was closed and most Thai commuters wanted it to reopened sooner than 2 weeks. One said he would rather die because of accident underground than being struck on the street for 4 hours.

The problem is that there are far too many cars on the street. We don't need subway at all if we can control the car buying. Make it tougher to buy a car like income-based financing, family-sizing calculation (a family of 3 is alllowed to own only one car), or something like that.

  11. Finally, the Islamic specialists brought the insurgency to a new level. The civil war or the all-out war, I think. Mr.Taksin might be the best in business, but he is the worst in dealing with social and political matters! The situation is worsen mostly by the government officers in the area.

    1. Randomly false arresting, mischarges

    2. kidnaping and killing innocent people

    3. Abuse of power and authorities, unfair treatments

    4. Extra juridical killing

    5. Discriminations based on religious

    6. Lack of education and basic living improvement.

    7. Taakbai and Gruu Se Mosque massacres

The government officers have been doing the number 1 through number 6 for more than 100 years. Think about it. Like you keep pumping the balloon. It will eventually blow up and this is it. In the 60's and 70's, The Northeastern region was lack behind every regions in the kingdom. Issan people were in deep problems and they couldn't take it anymore. They upraised and wanted to separate a whole region. Thai government used the force to suppress them. Killing as many as 30 issan political figures. Issan people were defeated and never see the light again. The history WILL repeat itself again in the South and it will be no way out until this group get what they want.

  12. I was butt fined near Siam Square, the guy had a German and a Canadian in tow with him then caught me dropping the butt into the road drain. Took the three of us, to a small booth and tried to get 2000 thb off each of us.

I refused to pay 2000 but I didn't want to lose my temper with the guy as I reckon they could get you hauled off to the nearest station if you start mouthing off to them. In the end they were demanding to see my passport, I couldn't show it as I didn't have it with me. I paid 500 thb as I had tickets for a Thai movie (Holiday Inn or something) and it was starting within a few minutes. The movie turned out to be a complete turkey although my girfriend enjoyed it.

I also refused to pay the fine too. My situation was that I was in front of Siam Square. I looked fo the trash, but found none so I was going to drop in the plant's pot. I saw the officer as I was going to do that. He also looked at me, but didn't move or act like he was going to warn me so I did drop it. That was it! He just ran to me and told me that I would be fined. I looked at him and said, "Officer, there is no trash around here. Besides, you saw me, but didn't warn me. That means you breach your duty." He didn't listen and try to take me to the booth. I went there and also talked to his superior. They all turned pale when I say all kind of things that they were suppose to warn me before I litter anything. Finally I paid 500 baht for that, but they will remember me for a long time.
