  1. I will be amazed if the 900,000 tablets are actually delivered 1 year from now.

It appears that many are concerned about these "toy" tablets and WiFi and electrical connections. True, but my concern is also what educational software will they be running. Maybe that isn't a real concern if they are given to first graders because most can't read. It isn't like there are "out the box" software packages ready to be installed for Thailand. Maybe those horrible singing Cd's that teach the Thai alphabet can be converted to Android and used on the toy tablets. There is almost no mention about the software development and how and when it gets installed. Perhaps that will be in the promises for the next election along with the needed replacements for the existing devices that generally have a 2-3 year usable live expectancy.

My guess is that (if they they ever actually receive the tablets) the device will enable every child that gets one (and can get WiFi access) to have a Facebook account. It will otherwise be nearly useless as an educational tool but it was a great vote getter with the gullible Thais.

  2. "Narisara said the German had earlier told her that he was prohibited from drinking under medical advice as it would affect the congenital disease he had. However, she said he overlooked the advice and drank every day."

Once again the ThaiVisa idiots are psychic. There isn't any mention of any medication in the article. Right away the the psychics have the guy on antibiotics. Just curious what congenital diease requires the use of antibiotics? It is probable that the reporter called his problem congenital as they usually embellish the facts to write a more interesting report. Most reporters and police seem to think all Farang have congenital problems. The words congenital, long term and existing seem to be interchangable to them.

The guy could easily have told the girl "I have long time problem and can not drink alcohol". She wouldn't need much education to understsnd that.

This forum had become the ludicrous example of why Thais think Farang are stupid. They might even be right from what I am reading in the comments.

These figures were taken from the Tourist Police arrival report at Swampy. Only 5 million short of 15,300,000. Anybody think that 5 million arrived through Phuket and Chiang Mai? Maybe it is the same math that bars and restaurants use to total the check bin.

    You forgot the landborder crossings.

You think that accounts for the difference of 5,000,000 entries? The only land crossing with any number of entries would be Malaysia. Just curious what totally insignificant number of tourists you think enter through those land crossings from Laos, Cambodia and Miramar? While we are at it, let's not forget the few that enter by seaports.

    Truly amazing Thailand.

The ability of foreign residents to completely accept one departments figures no questions asked and reject another Departments with out giving them a second thought is truly amazing.

Th 15,300,000 were obviously wrong just do the math but what makes the 10,338,670 rite. The tourist police at swampy. Can't remember checking in with them. Now if it had been Thai immigration I could understand that all incoming passengers go through them.

I am sure that many members are most impressed with your witty comment. I was extremely tired and wrote Tourist instead of immigration. Too bad you did not put the same effort into opening one of the documents in the link as you did with your comment.. If you had, you would (might) have seen the source:Source of Data : Immigration Bureau, Police Department.Note : Primary Data Tourist Arrivals excluded Overseas Thai

Probably more reliable figures than TAT because Immigration Police are the ones that you did check in with. What is truly amazing is all of the know it all scarcastic people that are on Thai forums.

  6. This is a link to the breakdown of arrivals.

    http://tourism.go.th/2010/th/statistic/tourism.php

Interesting how the Immigration Police statistics for Iran and Iraq are listed under "other" for the middle east. They account for 53.6% of the total middle east arrivall

It would be nice if they also showed the tourist destination by Thai city.

To bad that the Pattaya streets are swarming with so many Iranians, Iraqies and Russians. There aren't much fun to be around if you aren't one of them.

  7. So Whybother, you think she should get a quanity discount?

Simple concept for most people to grasp. It should be 9 multiple counts/charges for the 9 deaths and 5 more charges for causing great bodily harm to the injured people.

Total of 14 charges for each person dead or injured, not just one charge of "FATAL reckless driving".

Seems to be a special deal for Somebody na Important.

  8. She has been charged with fatal reckless driving and driving without a valid driver's license.

What about the charges involving the deaths? Should be more serious charges than seven years for nine people. How about nine charges.

The maximum penalty for the crime is seven years in jail.

It would be vehicular homicide and 70 years if she were a farang man. Anyone want to bet the drunk German guy in Pattaya gets more jail time for killing one guy this week than she does for killing nine people? Maybe he should quickly change his name to Gunter na Quarz.

fatal: causing or capable of causing death. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fatal

It was more manslaughter than homicide.

so the girl's speeding wasn't deliberate?

Criminal law 101 (that's as basic as it gets by the way): Homicide is when you intend to cause death. It's still manslaughter regardless of how much the girl was speeding

Please consider if you have enough knowledge in the area discussed before posting, law does not seem to be one of them

BFD is I incorrectly called it homicide instead of manslaughter. It is really irritating when simple minded people miss the point and are so easily confused by a simple mistake. Get on point or go away.

    The important point is:

SHE KILLED 9 PEOPLE. She intentionally violated multiple laws.

A 7 year sentence seems very light in comparison to the magnitude of the crime. The penalty should be times 9 because it should not be pay for one get 8 free.

She said she is "sorry". My response is 'bullsh!t" to the silly idea that if she says sorry, it all goes away. She did the crime, now do the time and pay up big time!

  9. She has been charged with fatal reckless driving and driving without a valid driver's license.

What about the charges involving the deaths? Should be more serious charges than seven years for nine people. How about nine charges.

  10. Once again the Oracles on ThaiVisa have become judges, jury and (if they could) executioners.

Most of you have based your decisions of guilt and blame on suspicion, innuendo, accusation and perhaps even a few facts. The truth is that probably none of you have any real knowledge of what has transpired. Miller has not told you any details about what he or the embassy has done or will do or their position. He stated he could not/would not divulge that information under terms of his Council position.

Don't mistake my position as support for Miller. I don't know what is true at this time. I don't like him and never did. I believe he is self serving and trying to make up for his insecurities through his "public service" actions. I think his "public service" is used as an access point to boost his news media endeavors and gain inside information. I have never appreciated his performance as a Walking Street wannabee cop, repulsed by his TV performances, don't read his newspaper anymore and seldom look at his website. Big Trouble in Thailand made him out to be more of a clown than cop. YouTube videos were even less flattering. It would appear that the British Embassy did not take any my dislikes into consideration for their selection of the Honorary Council.

I haven't had much to do with Drummond before this. I have very mixed opinions after reading his comments. Not all good.

The point is that most of you have decided facts, guilt and fate based on what? Crystals balls, Ouija boards, tea leaves or what? Certainly not on the "many" facts that have been written in this topic.

  11. All of you you haters should think that anyone could develop mental problems and bottom out. Sh!t happens. You don't know the facts that led up to this guy's situation. Who are you to judge?

It seems that not everyone knows that Howard Miller resigned from the Tourist Police Volunteers, effective upon becoming the Honorary Council on 1 Aug 2010. Howard pursued and accepted the honorary council job and it's obligations for his own reasons. Whether paid or unpaid is not the issue.

Howard is still running the Pattaya One news website and the associated newspaper. He and or his reporters probably have daily contact with the Soi 9 police, Tourist Police and Immigration Police. Hard to understand if there could be any reason why he would not have been knowledgeable from the start that this person was being held in Pattaya's lockup.

It appears the British Embassy isn't doing anything for this guy. He may be in the gutter, but he is still a British subject and therefore deserves their help. Perhaps a proper explanation from Howard is in order since he is their Honorary Council and Pattaya is his territory.

  12. Wavefloater

BTW, this is a really aggressive forum. Not much fun that way. I guess posting with anonymity make a lot of people act that way.

Aggressive forum? ThaiVisa is a heavily moderated and controlled environment. Just curious Wavefloater, were you sitting in a big stuffed chair, on a fluffy pillow, wearing silk jammies, sipping tea and eating little cookies, when you made that comment about aggressive? Welcome to the real world.

  13. I could not care less about Big Crap's business plan or profit or how successful Carrefour is. Big Crap bought them and will now most likely destroy them. I doubt that Big Crap cares what the current Carrefour management and employees think or have to offer in suggestions. Conquer, kill the and enslave the opponent. Looks like 47 new Big Craps coming soon to your neighborhood.

The point is that I like many foreign products and do not have any interest in "French" products, except for the Carrefour breads. Many of Carrefour's foreign items have nothing to do with being French. The point is that Carrefour provides a large and nice variety of otherwise hard to find items and the prices are better than most other markets. I do purchase some of their branded products like olive oil. The dairy line is the best in town. Best bakery varieties. Frozen food pales in contrast to Makro. Fish and meats are superior to Big Crap.

If you internet warriors are satisfied with Villa, that's your problem. Personally, I prefer not to pay a 50% premium for the Villa products. Foodland and Friendship are small but ok and often more expensive and usually with less variety than Carrefour. Most Tops are a waanabe and don't compare favorably to the others, with exception for the one in Central Festival Pattaya. I like what Carrefour offers.

I suspect many of the commenters prepare very little food at home or are satisfied with mediocre fare on their dinner table. Just because I live here, it doesn't mean that I should not enjoy an international variety of good foods. Those commenter that say you are in Thailand and I should only eat Thai food are idiots. I like Thai food, BUT also like an international variety. It really seems that many opinionated responders don't have a really good idea about what they are commenting on. Nothing new about that on ThaiVisa!

  14. That's depresing news because Carrefour will soon become more Big Crap locations selling low quality junk with limited varieties of non Thai food products. My guess is that business will drop because Big C doesn't have much of a clue what the farang customers want. It will be a downward spiral from here for the Carrefour locations.

At least in Pattaya we will still have Friendship Supermarket open until 02.30 everyday with good assortment of farang food. Great cheese selection, breads, meats fresh vegies and much more. Do most of my shopping there.

    hi

where is friendship supermarket? Is that the one across from Big C on Pattaya Nua?

Friendship as a good alternative to Carrefour? Great selections? It is obvious that it doesn't take much to satisfy some people. The frozen food, deli and dairy sections in Carrefour are almost as big as the entire Friendship store on Pattaya SOUTH Road! Freindship and Foodland have limited variety at best, because they are SO SMALL and are usually more expensive. Villa is also small and outrageously expensive! Big loss for Pattaya!

This is Thailand here ,the farang community is small ,its normal to find Thai products ... in Europe you dont find so much Thai products in Carrefour France for example . For farang stuff there is still Villa market or Central chidlom . Carrefour was selling farang stuff in few outlets only ,rama4, lad phrao, the one in Rangsit doesnt have any farang product.

You are more than welcome to shop in at Villa and pay a 50% premium. It wll be a loss to Pattaya to not have Carrefour. Enjoy your mama and fish sauce. There are many products that Carrefour now sells that are desireable and hard to find elsewhere.

Carrefour has meat, fish, bakery and frozen food sections that are beyond the imagination of Big Crap management. Looking for a large appliance like a tv or refrigerator? Not much at Big Crap.

  17. My Maxnet Premier 3MB seems to have constantly decreasing performance. It often take a long time for pages to load. International surfing is very slow now. Actually looks like the 20 user sharing may have been increased to perhaps 35 or 40. It is performing more and more like the horrible Maxnet Indy service. Torrents do however download with reasonable speed most of the time.

Does anyone have experience using the 3BB Pro 10MB service @ 1495 baht and especially want to know how it compares with Maxnet Premier 3MB @1090 baht.

I am interested in the specific performance with regard to torrent downloads, pages loading and international surfing.
