  1. A new video shows how germs can spread on an airplane—and how you can avoid getting sick.

No one likes to be stuck next to a sick person an airplane, but it turns out those pesky airborne germs will likely affect you no matter where you sit in the cabin.

A new animated video put together by Pennsylvania-based engineering firm Ansys simulates just what happens when someone seated in the middle of an airplane sneezes. The results aren’t pretty.

Instead of staying in a little bubble around the sneezing passenger, airborne particles can travel up to 50 feet, dispersing in all directions around the cabin due to plane airflow. "The particles are colored to show you where the stuff goes," Robert Harwood, a director at Ansys, told Popular Science. "Those droplets get picked up by the airflow and get transplanted all over the cabin. They actually spread quite far."

  2. And let's not forget the idiot who can't wait behind you at a U turn but insists that his rightful place is on your left, blocking your line of sight of on coming traffic, not to mention preventing you from getting into the left lane that is usually the reason for the U turn in the first place

Why should everyone all que up behind you and block the road? If everyone ques to your left then when there is an opening in traffic EVERYONE can easily make their way out at once. When the person to your left goes you are free to go out an move to the left. If you can't manage that maneuver then maybe you shouldn't be driving.

All of this is dependent on the U turn intersection but the ones I que on the left have plenty of room for cars and since I'm 99% more likely to pull out first I que furthest to the left.

Because they block my view and could cause me to have an accident. Plus, many will just make a tight right turn as you can't see to turn and pull out ahead of you. Plus, I'd bet it's illegal. Get into an accident and your insurance might have to pay up.

At the Thepprasit junction (and many others), they block the thru lanes, causing even more problems.

Your points are valid. 95% of the drivers here don't even bother to think that way. I mainly am referring to on particular u turn near mum aroi on sukhumvit. If you sit in the que you are often in the right lane with traffic flying past ( because they don't have adequate space for people to que safety for the u turn. I make this u turn everyday and a lot of the time I go and no one else does. Vision blocked or not they would just sit there.

What you described on theprassit is a completely different problem. That is people crowding to turn right blocking thru lanes of traffic.

I live down near the Ambassador. Many U-turns on Sukhumvit down here don't have a space for a turning lane. You're just "out" there in the fast lane blocking traffic and hoping they see you are trying to turn. It's an accident waiting to happen and when busy, totally blocks up traffic. Easy to fix.

I find it incredible that anyone is ignorant enough to acknowledge such driving behavior! There is a reason why the roads are MARKED for a single lane to make u-turns, you JERK! In addition to the totally valid points made by other posters, when you, and others, queue up to the left of the cars in the legal u-turn lane, you block the traffic that is trying to legally drive through that intersection. I am infuriated by anyone who feels that rules, signs, and road markings have no place in their lives. Damn selfish anarchists!! ... The right turn from Suk onto Khao Talo is a spot infamous for this "make a new lane" behavior. Khao Talo has only ONE LANE going east. So the cars in that "screw the rules" lane have to cut off the drivers who are making a legal turn. This, of course, means that other drivers who are obeying the rules, and are queued up in the legal turn lane, will miss the light change because of the cluster flick in front of them caused by you JERKS who think you have a right to ignore the law!! NOBODY who is to my left when making that turn gets in front of me!!! There should regularly be a cop at that intersection to fine everyone in that illegal lane.

Calm down dude! I never said I do this. Just saying why it's a bad idea. Re-read my post carefully....I acknowledge such driving behavior because I see it every day. I don't do this and don't condone it. It's extremely dangerous. And extremely rude.

That turn at Khao Talo is really bad. But it's also due to a very poor highway design. If you are coming from Thepprasit and want to turn down Khao Talo, at times, the turn lane is fully backed up and the only solution is a double turn. But, as we all know, that's not always the reason some do this.

  4. When are you all going to learn - on w/ends (especially long holiday w/ends) stay out of Pattaya and never take the car out.

    Simple wai2.gif

Unfortunately, I've got quite a few friends who work during the week. Weekends are the only time they can go out! sad.png

  6. For that reason I don't have a car here in Pattaya. smile.png

Luckily i have"loads of money" and richer than you ,so i can sit in air conditioned splendour while you either sit sweating in the back of a baht bus , risk death on a motorbike or wear yourself out covered in sweat walking along beach road being accosted by Indians trying to sell you a suit or being told how handsom you are

ime only joking ,you do know that thumbsup.gif sweaty!!!biggrin.png

I like being told how handsome I am! Gets better and better every year as I age! LOL

  7. I love the ones who pass you on the left on the shoulder just to get a few cars ahead. Which totally screws up the traffic. What's worse is when it's a huge bus! Very dangerous....and very inconsiderate.

  8. Chaiyapruek is becoming a nightmare almost every afternoon from Jomtien 2nd road to Suk. Took me over 20 minutes the other day. It's only a few km!!!!

Went to turn onto Chaiyapruek from Jomtien 2nd rd towards Sukhumvit this afternoon and the tail back was back onto 2nd road.

This evening was the worst I've witnessed, tail back from the junction of Hunaman (sp) statue back along 2nd road ,way past Rhompo market.

Luckily for me I was on a motor bike taxi going the other way, incidentally counted 36 buses in the queue.

I've encountered that a few times recently. Seems the problem is the light at Thepprasit. 3 lanes trying to turn right and only allowing 1 lane to go straight through.

  9. Well, again guys, it's where you choose to live. I can get a Tuk Tuk to anywhere in Hatyai for B40-80

True that and I can get bombed in any bar in BKK and survive too. Just saying it is about choices But as far as Taxi's If I want to be ripped off I go to Vegas. They do it royally.

Taxis in Vegas use a meter. The fares are super high, but metered. You want to get ripped off....go to Moscow. Or Vietnam. Or Cairo....

Vietnam has GRABTAXI nowadays. easy to avoid rip-offs

As long as you've got a SIM in your phone that works there, you're not arriving late at night at the airport, or if they even respond at all. We tried it a bit ago in Bangkok. After waiting over an hour, we gave up. Tried using one of these here in Pattaya, nobody every came.

  11. I tried a few times using the IE browser and always got the "contact your local office" message, but then I got a new passport not too long ago. Probably it'll be awhile before all the data for all farang on extensions of stay is entered and updated.

Went to the office and they just used the bar code from the last time. No need for the TM.47 or photocopies. Only took a couple of minutes... although the Internet method would be easier still.

I tried, but no luck. Went to immigration and the wait was 30 minutes. And no parking nearby! Can't wait to be able to do this online.

Not sure what my problem was, but will try again next time!

  12. What I like about that dental hospital is all the experts they have right there. I've needed some extensive work done and it was done by experts. Not by a general dentist operating out of a small clinic. Even the cleaning I've gotten at that hospital in Bangkok was the best of any I've had elsewhere here in Thailand. They aren't cheap, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Sometimes....LOL

Cleaning, braces, filling cavities...can be done by almost any dentist. I had some complicated implants. Not something an ordinary clinic can handle.

  13. LOL. The reason many went to PIH was because of that dentist. Because she did a great job and was very friendly. Even sang while she worked. It wasn't because she was cute. She did a great job. She's upcountry now taking care of her parents.

Another dentist that use to work there has left and has his own office. Right near the Bangkok Bank branch on North Pattaya road, a few hundred meters East of the roundabout, North side. He is fantastic.

  14. I pretty much just did Rajasthan. Driver picked me up from Delhi and we left town immediately! Too crazy for me. He took care of all hotels and where to eat. I was never hassled as he knew where to go and where not to go! No train rides. Dropped me off at the airport and off I went. Fantastic.

I'm still in touch with my guide. I can ask him what the rates are now. It was a wonderful way to travel. Private car with driver, can stop when you want, and he knows all the good places to eat and stay. Fantastic trip.
