  1. was that photo taken at that tall hotel just off the main highway down south ?

i've seen porsches , lotus and all sorts of off the wall imports there.

the porter there told me they all belong to the owner.

Yep, thats the one! Filthy as FXXX and more like a brothel.. But no where else to stay for the night as all was full. However we striked lucky as the woman who owns the travel agency was an angle and booked us a great Hotel at Koh Tao.

  2. Hey,,,,,,,,,can anyone tell me about the need to have a vehicle inspected prior to the payment of the annual tax?

I have a truck and bike,,,,,,,,,,,both books show i have paid the taxes for 3 years. This year will be number 4 for both.

I have been informed that a check/inspection of some sort must be done prior to paying the tax for this year on the truck and for the bike on the 6th year of renewal.

What is this inspection? Safety? Serial numbers? Smog check?

Is this accurate? The 4th year on a auto and the 6th year on a bike?

    Any help?

    Thanks

If in Bangkok just drive to Moo Chit. Bring your book and prepare some papers. Drive through the test centre. Open the hood. Someone will come with tape and takes your chassis number, sticks it on a piece of paper and signs off. With that you go to the other office on the same compound. Prresent the papers and wait no longer than 3 minutes for your new tax card.

  3. I was checking BMW's Thai website and don't see the 320d listed???

Parts made in Germany...good...slapped together in Rayong...bad :D

I hope you are happy with your decision...but still don't see where you will get the use of such a nice car in and around Pattaya. I guess you will get to Bangkok and back faster than the rest of us however :o

As others have mentioned, you will always be worried about somebody an a motorcycle putting a ding or scratch in it. No matter how careful you are, it's bound to happen (more than once) in 3 years.

I could see it if Thailand had autobahns like Germany but spending that kind of money on a high-performance car in Thailand is just subcoming to the Bling factor, whether you have the money or not. As I have posted elsewhere, a car is just a box with 4 wheels that contains about 150,000 miles in it. Just make sure to have the windows tinted dark so the police will think its a hi-so Thai speeding and ignoring traffic rules...otherwise they'll surely hike up your road use fees.

You are very fond of this "bling factor' business, and you can't seem to understand that some people might have a greater appreciation of good quality motors than you do, and enjoy driving them, just for the sheer pleasure of it.

The 320D is not on their website as it's only been out since March, and they haven't updated their site yet. This is a brand new model for Thailand, and it's selling like hot cakes.

Where do you get the idea that it's 'slapped together in Rayong". That seems to suggest that all Thai produced auto mobiles are "slapped together". If I know anything about the Germans I would bet their assembly plant out-does the Japanese in quality control. You surely don't think they have a bunch of locals running things down there do you? (Incidentally, GM/Chevrolet also have their plant in Rayong - so is all their stuff 'slapped together' as well?

I don't know about you, but I do a lot of driving all over Thailand - from the North to Issan to Central and Southern Thailand, and I would say that a vast majority of the main roads that I have encountered are of acceptable quality and I will immensely enjoy the touring experience on future trips. I will be shortly be replacing my wife's Jazz with a CRV and will use that for the rougher journeys.

All your hostility over my preferred choice of car seems to suggest that there may be just a teeny weeny bit of envy creeping in here. :D

Enjoy your Darkside meals in your Sports rider - maybe you should trade it in for a Captiva that has been "slapped together" in Rayong :D

Plus the BMW's paint is slapped on at the Volvo's facilities! But who cares... I love my BMW!

  4. BMW - if you have money to burn and don't mind it depreciating at least a million baht in 3 years; also if you plan to keep it for at least 10-15 years. Good street cred and like whitening cream - good for your face! It would make a great buy in a few years after it has depreciated somewhat.

Wise words indeed about letting some other mug take the depreciation hit, but i fear our friend Mr Mobi already has the kindling and has the match poised to get the blaze going.

A Car is not bought with the thought of getting a return on your investment unless you buy Oldtimers.

  5. I would have thought that you would be more interested in avoiding more accidents after your recent experience, obviously the warning hasn't been heeded by the sound of things. I pity any scooter riders as you go like shit on the shit roads around lake Maprachan.

Just because it goes like sh..t it doesn't mean I would drive it like sh..t.

But the incredible acceleration might get me out of a few dangerous situations.

Like me, you have no knowledge of who was at fault in my accident at Mabprachan, and the more I think about it the more I suspect the other driver was on the wrong side of the road. But I will never know for sure. I admit it might have been me who was at fault, but if I can surmise anything from it all, I can say that the other party was mighty friendly for someone who was not at fault, and he did not seek any recompense from me.

In 45 years of driving, all over the world, I have only had one major accident, so I think my record speaks for itself.

The 320D is in a different class to the Honda, and when you test drive it, it sells itself to anyone who loves good motors. So right now I am veering that way.

Go for the BMW if you can afford it. You will have that smile on your face everymorning when you start it up. Should you get the Honda you wont stop thinking of why you didn't get the BMW. Again, if you can afford it go for the bimmer...

  8. If the girl is brass then she will consider 9k brass. If she has a bit more class and education she would understand that 9k is very practical for jewelry and can be worn daily without becoming battered and gruby like 23k quickly becomes.

However it is generally the case that the isan girl would prefer 23k as it is valued as money so looking trashy doesnt matter

A girl with a "bit more class and education" would not wear it.

  9. I did not manage to secure overnight train tickets or bus tickets in time, but my friend and I need to get to Nong Khai by the 11th of April with two bicycles. Does anyone have room in their vehicle or have train or bus tickets to sell? I know that Songkran really takes a toll on the travel arrangements, but thought I would give it a shot. Happy to sit in the back of a truck with livestock or distant relatives, and we will pitch in for gas too. :D

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    chris

    Maybe you could fly.... :o

    Or start biking now!

Serious though. It would be interesting to start now with overnight stays on the way.. Sure you see lots of interesting things on the way

  10. Wait for them to expand, then 100+ copycat shops will open, then 1 year down the track Mos Burger will disappear, just like Rotiboy.

    What did happen to Rotiboy??

Maybe they fled back to Malaysia with bagfulls of Baht banknotes, because there were queues outside the Silom branch for nearly a year (until the copycats opened up).

    well... who ran rotiboy?

I found this dated Nation article on Google:

"Rotiboy denies it's in talks with Shinawatras

The owner of the Malaysian Rotiboy chain of bakeries has denied a rumour that he has been in talks with members of the Shinawatra family concerning a master franchise of Rotiboy in Thailand.

Hiro Tan, an owner of Rotiboy Bakeshoppe Sdn Bhd, said that the company hadn't approached anyone yet to be its master franchisee in Thailand. It has been operating in Thailand since November 25 last year.

Rotiboy is considered Bangkok's hottest bakery.

There have been rumours that a member of the Shinawatra family is negotiating to become Rotiboy's master franchisee.

Rotiboy has two branches in Bangkok, one on Silom Road and another in Siam Square, both characterised by long queues.

Tan said Rotiboy is considering having a master franchisee in Thailand and will commence talks with interested parties later. But, the company will not take this step until it finishes its first phase of branch expansion in June.

  12. Than we have got the Gouda in the orange wrapper to be found at Tesco, Foodland etc, etc...

A few months ago Baht 134.- and thas was the price since many years.. all of a sudden the price went up to 165.- baht.. Now, ok I do understand that. However did you notice that the weight has changed as well. It used to be 250 gr. Same as there other range such as edam and vintage.. However the Gouda is now being sold at Baht 165.- for just 200 gr. So they up the prices and reduce the weight from 250 gr. to 200 gr. And that only counts for their Goude cheese. Their other range remains at 250 gr.

I think thats a real rip off.

Any idea's what it would cost?

  14. They used to register the bikes though Rayong however in January they moved the officers taking bribes and now the new guys wont do it...

Paid 65000 for new book for a 2003, 1000cc bike. Wanted to register my second bike and paid my deposit of Baht 25000.... December came but no book... January came and the guy told me.. sorry Mr. Lemond... officers been moved around, we are now looking for other places in Thailand to get your book.. still waiting till today. But at least he gave me my deposit back.

He told me he would be able to do it again in April... so should I hear back and being succesfull with the second bike registration I will post more details.

  15. I bought a new 2007 Toyota Vigo Exclusive 4-door, 4x4 etc. last February.  I received Viriyah 1st class insurance through Toyota at the time of purchase.  I received a renewal contract from Viriyah last

month and the insurance charge totaling 24,284.84 baht.

This cost is higher than last year while offering less overall coverage, 670,000 baht versus 700,000 or so last year.  I know I have read many times on the TV website of people paying much less for their 1st class insurance, some as low as 14,000 baht.  Has insurance prices gone up or am I just mistaken concerning the lower quotes observed?  What are you guys paying for 1st class insurance for your new or year or two year old trucks and what agency are you using?  I want quality insurance, but don't want to pay an arm and leg for it.  By the way, I have a perfect driving record here in Thailand for the past 3 years so bad driving, accidents etc can not  be considered as a factor in determining the higher cost.

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

    Dear Pattayadavid,

Go here for a online quote:

    http://www.nzi.co.th/eng/Default.aspx

They are great and cheap!! They will take your no-claim over....

In fact, I just did the online quotation for you:

    Your truck would cost:

    Vehicle - 2007

Total Annual Premium including Compulsory Insurance - 12,053.55 Baht

Thats with QUICK QUOTE FUNCTION and not yet no-claim deducted....

Have a go at it, you will find them pretty good!
