  1. if it makes you guys feel better there are tons of Thais born from Chinese immigrants who are not wealthy. infact, there are so many Thais from Chinese immigrants that this whole debate is completely silly. If the Chinese succeeded, its probably cause they had the required skills or formula for success.

its kind of like when Americans complain about Indians owning all the 7/11's. They are mad because the Indians come to America, work 70 hours a week, save all their money and pool it into businesses and repeat while the Americans borrow as much money as possible and complain about working 40 hours and how they are going to sue their boss etc etc...

  2. what no good places to pull over and relax around there heng?

That is standard operating procedure, but we were stuck well before the first Jet gas station, and the nearest oasis was a good 2 hours away (even though only 3-4 kms. down the road).

    :o

What is this 'we'? How many of your Thai-Chinese friends do you bring along on ethnic thai squatter eviction day?

  4. net worth is deceiving because it does not take into account cost of living. like you buy a condo in a very good location. the value of the condo doubles. great! but if you sell, then you really dont see any of the profit unless you decide to move to a cheaper location. if you want to keep living there, well the cost has gone up, if that makes any sense at all.

  5. Very interesting thread and a lot of good answers.

The only thing I know is if you have an income more than is needed for your life style you are happy and if your income is less than the lifestyle you want you will be unhappy. This is the theme of a lot of the posts and I agree with them

yeah you will also be unhappy if you get fired or cannot work for some reason or costs arise outside of your set budget. otherwise its just an unwanted pregnecy, gambling habit or motorcycle accident away from being hel_l.

  6. man, the only good thing about america is that imported items are as cheap as can be. you can buy many imported items in the usa for less than they cost in the country they were manufactured in. high volume and low margin is a dream for the consumer. take thailand, small selection and high prices.

  7. everyone is sitting and waiting for the housing bubble to come so they themselves can buy. these threads are all essentially, "you should sell now, at a low price to me and i wouldn't buy it at this price, i would buy it at this price, its not fair that other people have more money then me. real estate costs more in asia. look at the prices in hong kong, 600K baht/m2 and please tell me that bangkok is silly over priced. you can't.

  8. "I have a luxury villa, a swimming pool, 50 inch TV etc ... but I still think Starbucks is for suckers !!"

sorry but i don't see many guys with luxury villas and 50 in tvs getting worked up because some people pay premium for name brand coffee. i would love to spend less than 140 baht for my mocha frapuchino but sadly i can only get it in starbucks. the other places dont taste as good.

  9. Nothing wrong with a simple life but 17,000 a month,????

now thats what you call simple.

No, it's what you call "living in the right place."

My first year in Thailand (2003), I lived on exactly that amount while supporting a partner who was earning a degree at a university (on my baht). Lived comfortably and traveled domestically nearly every weekend with Thai friends. Saw most all of Thailand that first year, and even saved up for one trip to North America at the end of that year.

Anyone who wants to live higher on the hog than that, really wants to maintain a fully western lifestyle in Asia. If that's your preference, do it. But don't denigrate those who choose the lifestyle of the vast majority in their host country. In my opinion, it's a lot more care-free and less hassle. It also frees me to concentrate on life's priorities and not get bogged down in "maintaining the stuff" associated with that other lifestyle.

To each his own, without prejudice. :o

if it works for the majority of thais, why can't it work for a farang? 17k/month is still alot for isaan. i am only impressed with farang who have less than 10k/month in income.
