  1. yeah its funny that all the stuff that costs nothing to make, like shoelaces, is ridiculously expensive in the USA, but stuff like the latest Honda or HDTV is much cheaper then anywhere else, even the countries which made the product. i love going home, browsing on amazon at rock bottom prices and having it all delivered for free to the foot of my door. but no way in hel_l i am buying any $7 shoelaces or $21 plastic sandals.

  2. nemo,

i was just saying that while speaking only your native language around your children might not make a huge difference, all research suggests it will make some difference. the types who will only speak their native language are likely to be perfectionists and perfectionists tend to have higher iq's. they will probably also start teaching their little lueks to read while other parents say "thats what we send them to preschool for".

  3. I speak three languages with my 3 children . Thai, danish and english , mostly when i am home i Th i speak thai with them . And when i travel arround the world for my work , i talk to the kids every day over the internet , and we are alway changing i the language we speak.

My son is 8 years now , but are already close to speak danish fluently.

    that'll come in handy.

  4. Would any of us want your kids learning English from our wives?

"daddy why you no give me money for chocolate?"

Well mine don't ask me like that.

    doesn't

If you are going to attempt being a pedant, please learn the language. 'Don't' is correct in the above sentence assuming more than one child :o

Careful, your arrogance in questioning the age of a father, or assuming the intelligence of a person will bit you in the ass before you know it :D

nope. he said "why would you want your children to learn English from your wife?", then i gave an example of how his children would talk if they learned english from his wife (just as a joke, nothing serious), then he said "they don't ask me like that", implying he has multiple wives. So while it seems to be a simple miscommunication, I am going to come out on the side that I am still right.

edit: please no pm's for english job supervisor/language school principal offers i am set

  5. have seen farang fathers in their mid-late fifties (at child's birth) have seen many who might be in their 60's. who is blizzard?

I am 64 next month and my son will be 4 in August.

I missed his birth by about 3 hours as I was in Bangkok clearing up ready for moving to Klong Lan and my wife was early for about the first time in her life having our son. She did, however forget to tell me which hospital she was in so I had a friend ask every hospital in Nakhon Sawan if she was there. When I got to NS with a Thai friend we than had to find the hospital.

I was only a little late and he was worth it.

I was then 60 and my wife 39 (or 29 by her counting)

    mazaltof

  6. Expat wages only. :o

The dude could get a job teaching English tomorrow that would pay enough to get off the streets while he looks for a better job in the meantime.

clearly he has higher standards than that. He probably only eats out of The Marriot and Landmark dumpsters.

  7. yeah, this is off the wiki page you linked

Other projections of population growth predict that the world's population will eventually crest, though it is uncertain exactly when or how. In some scenarios, the population will crest as early as the mid-21st century at under 9 billion, due to gradually decreasing birth rates, (the "low variant" of [3]), The "high variant" from the same source gives a population between 10 and 11 billion in 2050.

  8. i cannot understand half of the stuff that comes out of non American/Canadian mouths...

could the reason be that your knowledge/command of the english language is rather limited and you are only familiar with the dialect used to communicate in the northern parts of the Americas?

    just asking... :o

nobody has a problem understanding Americans and Canadians when they speak, but they have problems understanding each other...its just about the ability to speak clearly. Singlish is probably crystal clear for Singaporeans. I don't have the first clue about what they are trying to say. i have watched football with Thais many times when they ask "Why is he (english guy) talking like that. It makes me want to kill myself". Fwiw, Indians also tend to speak very clearly.

i know there are many kinds of english dialects. i like the ones that the cnn reporters and hugh grant use. some of the other ones, i dont know where they come from, probably from the docks or factories, its like being slowly tortured.

  9. i cannot understand half of the stuff that comes out of non American/Canadian mouths but does that really stop them from teaching english? all i know about english teaching comes from stickman bangkok and he makes it out like ANYONE with a white face can get a job teaching.

  10. many of the farang here are the Western version of Isaanites: bad spending habits, beat down by the man, etc

And I disagree Heng, any farang can go out and grab a 20k+/month teaching job, while perhaps not ideal, I think thats a pretty awesome plan B when you consider the majority of Thais are making waaaaay less than that.

  11. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080423/ap_on_...e/wal_mart_rice

Sam's Club says it will limit customers to four bags at a time of Jasmine, Basmati and long grain white rice. Rice prices have been hitting record highs recently on worries about tight supplies.

Sam's Club's restriction is effective immediately at all locations where quantity restrictions are allowed by law. It does not apply to other staples such as flour or oil.
