  1. Always amazes me that people bother pulling people up on spelling mistakes and bad punctuation. It's a forum, not a English exam!

    mEE tWo!

I'm as pedantic as they come but in thousands of posts on various forums -- many of them part of quite spirited debates -- I've never called anybody on their spelling or grammar. It's especially sad when someone does it in lieu of an actual argument or refutation of a point.

EDITED: to remove lame emoticon -- not to fix spelling or grammar! Really!

    I love noodles.

Sometimes we can extract a modicum of humour from malapropisms or grammatical ambiguities, and it seems only right to share such.

It is an excellent way to highlight that you have given up on a debate, without actually explicitly admitting defeat.

Or a good way to stage a digression away from a tedious and over-worked subject, to try and break a downward spiral.

Perhaps other readers would care to share their methods of diverting discussion to less repetitive and tedious topics?

  2. The only man you can trust is a dead one.

If your wife knows from the start, and knows that the mistress will never take you away from her, then she can trust you; trust you to be you and to come back to her and the kids and the house.

Why take the chance, when the insurance will pay up promptly?

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...

  3. We're talking about men, NOT women. Women are designed to be monogomous, men aren't. There is a huge difference between men and women.

its the same every where......humans are not meant to be monogamous...tell me another mammal that is... some of us try but its always a test

The OP was talking about both men and women to be accurate. Also, one of the major differences between men and women went out the window with the introduction of birth control pills.

A woman now has control (at least in theory) over her reproductive rights.

I also think the reason more women cheat in Thailand is because so few have cats as pets.

I am surprised that I have seen so few Siamese cats here

  4. The problem is for every cheating man there is a cheating woman (whether she herself is single or not is immaterial as a consenting partner, for whatever reason, she is duplicitous), unless of course if he is gay, and then it is two men but this made up for by cheating women who are lesbian (happens far more often than you would believe). Thus to say the only man you can trust is a dead one (I would agree generally) but exactly the same must be said of women (generally).

I don't think my wife has ever cheated on me. Does that mean someone else's wife is cheating twice, to make up?

I can't believe that someone else's wife is cheating on me to compensate for my wife - that just doesn't seem right...

  5. Let's take it one step further and ban all single men over 50 from even visiting Thailand. These pathetic people are here for one thing only - GET RID OF THEM!

Your just jealous, because the girls go after us oldies with money, not young, poor cheap charlies.Remember, money ,number 1.

having been here for over 10 years and now an oldie, i think Thailand was so much better when it was mostly over 50's who came here

since flight prices have gone down and its been noticed by the Ibiza set, its much the worse for it

i left England to get the bullet headed, binge drinking <deleted> out of my life and now they have followed me here

the sooner they find somewhere else to go, the happier i will be...........

I've lived in Thailand, on and off for 10 years, and I never remember a time when it was mostly over 50's??

Apart from soldiers, way back when, I would say it was young backpackers that put this place on the map. Places like Phi Phi were just a few bamboo huts on the beach, that the bird nest collectors used to live in, until the backpackers came.

I'm not condoning bad behaviour, it's embarrassing to be an English man abroad sometimes, because you are getting tarred with the same brush as all the retards that have gone before you.

However, frowning upon the younger generation in its entirety isn't the way to go. Fast track to being a grumpy old man, that can't keep up with the times. There are just as many good youngsters out there as bad, and <deleted> loads of 50 pluses, that I would love to see the back of. Getting drunk (and within reason) playing up a bit, is part of a normal lurning curve for youngens. Marrying a bar girl, and having children, refusing to learn any of the Thai language, treating your wife like a servant, the list could go on, is not normal behaviour.

There's good and bad across the ages, but given a choice, I'd take the younger generation all day long!

At least with young ones, you can kid yourself they might grow up one day, but with the daft oldies about, you realise they probably never will...

The atomic bomb saved a lot of Thai lives, since this is a Thai centric forum. The Brits and Indians were massing on the Burma border to invade Thailand and take their pound of salt for the Thai collusion with the Japanese that led to the fall of Singapore and Burma. The most likely scenario even if the Thais would have surrendered as a result of the British attack would have been the loss of a large part of the rice crop to the Allies and the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Thais.

Pretty much what happened when the Chinese troops invaded Hanoi and a million Vietnamese starved.

To be fair, my point was not made against the specific, slightly ebuliant claim regarding atoms for peace. However, it is probably fair to say that the bombs in question avoided the need to completely raze Tokyo and other cities, and may therefore have saved Japanese lives; and had the Americans held off using the said bombs for humanitarian reasons, others in the decades that followed may have been less restrained, resulting in a worse holocaust in the long run.

As Peter Sellers pointed out (Dr Stangelove was on Cinemax over the weekend, coincidentally enough) a Doomsday Device cannot ensure peace unless everyone is aware of what it can do (and believes that you may use it)

  7. That's what I said, but millions of whose lives? It surely wasn;t Japanese. Plus, I'm not real sure it was millions. I was exaggerating a little. In any case, it wasn't a step forward for humanity,

Yes. Exaggerated, just a little. Most will absorb such other exaggerations as gospel, though.

There is another thread which highlights the hazards of a sense of humour... there are many idiots amongst us who will accept things like that at face value.

Remember, we live in a post-Darwinian age in which we cannot rely on evolution to rid of idiots - not in the short term, anyway. You are going to have to make allowances for us....

  8. The Question Why.....Goes out the window in Thailand I gave up years wondering Why certain things happen here.

  9. Part of the Thai female paradox - part image. Part modesty.

The thing I notice is most of the women in the media and in advertisements are white skinned. No wonder all the issan girls want to wear that whitening creme. I don't think it's healthy for the country to give the majority of the people inferiority complexes. But then again the west does it all the time by using unrealistically thin women. That's just what people want to see I guess. Same with the short skirt thing.

Have you tried adjusting your set?

  10. In a recent proposal to the Thai cabinet, it will no longer be legal for employers to discriminate against Tourette Sufferers.

Expect newsreaders and monks to be the most obvious to benefit from this new legislation...

Asked how it will affect parliament itself, a spokesperson said "We expect debate to be more rational and peaceful, now that these people can get jobs elsewhere. ARSE"

  11. In THAILAND Hundreds of Britons protested in Thailand yesterday against new laws preventing any foreigner over the age of 50 from marrying a Thai woman - before they were told that they were the victim of an April FoolS Day prank.

A news item on the Thai website Thaivisa.com said the laws were introduced and a bill would be passed through parliament on May 1st. Ministry of Interior spokesman Tawatchai Suksoom was quoted as saying: 'Many older foreigners seem to marry Thai women so they can stay in Thailand under less strict requirements. Instead of needing to meet the requirements of 800,000 baht in the bank they only have to show 400,000 baht a year when married to a Thai.

'Additionally, many of these people seem to come to Thailand simply to marry much younger girls. In many cases they are old enough to be their father. I am concerned that these people are attempting to circumvent the rules by marrying innocent Thai women. If these people don't have enough money to retire then they shouldn't be here and become a burden to Thailand.'

Over 650 foreigners, mainly Britons wrote in to complain, accusing the government of being amongst other things racist and abusing human rights.

  12. I reckon this thread will go on so long that it comes to the government's attention, they review the more recent postings, and decide "Yes, yes, let's do it...."

Stupidity may be its own reward, but never know where it will end up...

    SC

I thought that was the idea.

It'll probably take effect just as I turn 50, and then get incorporated in the UN Bill of Human Rights, along with discrimination against bigots and smokers....

wait a minute, those two are preetty much there already !

I'd better marry a teenager quickly!

I think his space bar and his spellchecker are not working.

There seems to be alot of mumble-jumble in his message.

what a moron you must be - you've been told before but you can't even get that right - I'd love just for a minute - no more - to experience the dim and murky nebulous world that is your feeble mind - just so I can get an idea of how really thick you are!

  14. Blatant racist discrimination. What next? They'll be telling foreigners they can't own land...

This is a "classic" racist post.......

why is it that expats are so quick to accuse others of what they think is "racism" when they can't even recognise their own racism

racists love to accuse others of racism - especially "races" as they feel it mitigates their own racism.

This propose legislation - is not racist - it is ageist and XenophobicIt is also completely irrational and unenforceableAnyone who think this is a "good idea" is a buffoon with know idea of basic governmental principles - but what d'you expect on TV?

That's the pot calling the kettle black!

  15. This is absolutely true. I was talking with my neighbor who says that this is the only legislation the Democrats and Pheu Thai can currently agree on. It has nearly 100% bipartisan support. They are actually hoping that it will be the foundation of a new platform of reconciliation in Thai politics.

There is even talk of the red shirts and the yellow shirts walking arm in arm around the city of Bangkok to personally announce the new restriction.

There is a limit to how far you can push something...

  16. as another poster said the eyes tell all

and of course how she treats you

even the rent a gals i would never bother with if they didn't show some genuine interest in me

its all about how they talk to you treat you and look at you

the voice too, and phone manners, and follow through on promises, all common sense

if you are not a good judge of character then you need this thread and tactics

the email idea is fantastic but i dont think i want to know

I like posts like this one because, in simple honesty - the answers are given, even when they might not have been intended.

The OP and most of the responses are asking how to avoid misery. For that, there is really only one valid solution - competent entrapment.

The gentleman above has given the answer for how to achieve happiness. For that, there is really only one valid solution - stop looking for what does not exist. Be satisfied with a well-played game, or a game played well for at least a while.

A relationship based on 'tests' is doomed to fail. WHen you don't feel the need to test; then maybe you are ready for a relationship.

What tests is the OP setting himself?

  17. Edano: Cover may be used to stop radiation

Japan's top government spokesman says the government and experts are considering whether to cover the reactor buildings at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant with a special material, to stop the spread of radioactive substances.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters on Wednesday the experts are also examining the use of a tanker to collect irradiated water at the plant.

Edano said a variety of options are being studied to minimize radioactive contamination in areas around the plant, and to prevent health hazards.

He said working-level discussions are underway on the new measures and a political decision will probably be sought at some stage.

He said the whole situation is not at a point where he can responsibly say when the reactors will be brought under control. He said it will likely take a considerable amount of time before the fuel rods in the reactors and spent fuel pools cool down and stabilize.

Edano said monitoring for plutonium contamination may be extended to areas outside the plant compound since trace amounts of the element were found in soil on the plant grounds.

Edano said consumption and shipping restrictions on farm products will be lifted once their safety is consistently confirmed.

Perhaps people should have to take a driving test before they are allowed to use a computer; the worry is that people might take posts such as the above seriously.

When I was a child, I worried about nuclear war and oil running out. Who would have thought that a more likely cause of the end of civilisation was the internet, and the uncontrolled spread of stupidity and ignorance?

Perhaps we should restrict the internet to harmless content such as pornography, and perhaps football scores...
