The pie-dish shape and colour being diagnostic. Then I thought about the claws being uneven which pushed me to thinking, for a moment, about Rulelinae - which contains the Christmas Beetles - but these are bright and often metallic colours. Then I thought about the powerful digging claws and swung toward the Scarabaeidae Dynastinae - Rhinoceros and elephant beetles. On closer inspection the claws in the picture may well be even and the right upper claw just a trick of the angle . So my money (for a day or so at least) is on the latter group. But I could be wrong, so if any one knows for sure I would like to know.

Anyone that thinks someone dying in such circumstances is amusing are trailer trash. The guy was trying to make a living - most likely has a family. As for Karma - I hope some of the posters on this thread get a dose.

Caught this dragonfly in our back garden, sitting on the old chicken shed.Didn't realize, until I focused in,that it had a wasp (I think) in it's clutches and was preparing itself some breakfast.Quite amazing and at the same time shocking, to watch nature at work.
Sony a6000 coupled with my CZ Sonnar, 1/200 sec, ISO 500 and judging by the high ISO,I would guess around f/8 for the aperture.
Being a manual aperture, the f stop is not recorded with the exif data.
.........Goomps, will be back!!!
Outstanding shot. This looks like a young imm. Blue Skimmer. The female stays yellow/orange but the male develops a bright blue bloom as it ages. The blue is a form of algae. These dragonflies are the Apache helicopter
of the insect world. Getting them in focus whilst in flight is a real challenge.

Fractured Rabbit makes excellent comment on Macro. I am using a 100 2.8 as my most used lens. I have a 180 3.5 macro I use for butterflies and an MPE 65 for extreme macro. The latter is difficult but I can use it even hand held with a lot of patience. You really need to develop technique for macro. Best for me, is to get focused as best I can and then sway back and forth (tiny body movement) and try to time the shots. A full frame camera helps as you have the option of pushing the ISO to higher levels and this allows faster shutter speeds. My favourite body for this is the Canon 6D. I also use a twin arm flash if needed. This can help not only in darker areas but when shooting into the light. In addition I will use a bigger flash but well diffused. For work I do for museums etc many insects are staged. This allows easier stacking but it is not my favourite style as I prefer shots taken in the wild or wherever the insect is found rather than dead animals.I do like the Olympus with the auto stacking feature - and they make great lenses as well.
I am now moving toward macro movies - a whole new learning field and one that is testing my budget. For this I will use hand held but had to buy a seriously heavy, and expensive Miller tripod. The problem with the work I am doing at the moment is that early morning has little wind but the insects are more abundant and active from midday on, as it warms up. next is working at filming insects in the canopy with a drone.
Keep up the good work people. This one of the few threads on TV worth viewing.

I wasn't a great fan of the Beetles - more a Stones lad, but the Beetles revolutionised the pop scene and I think people forget how much they influenced the music world for a very long time.. Their stuff after the films subject matter, was impossible to reproduce on stage. They really changed the way music was produced. To equate them with The Monkeys is an inane comment. The Monkeys had no standing in the music world at all. Saying one group was better than another is fine but the music needs to be put in the context of the times. I know kids that laugh at the Stones and Beetles music and try to convince me Rap is the best musical genre of all time - good luck with that! Each generation has the music of the time and that music triggers memories of good (or bad) times. It is often those associated memories that endear us to music. The other day I heard some Buddy Holly on the radio and it was great.
I will go to see the film - Ron Howard will most likely have done a job with it. I would have liked it to be more about their developing the recording studio style than just the early stuff, but it is what it is.

Upload a video to youtube and try to get it viral. Only then will any authorities bother to do their job, to save face.
Or it could draw hundreds of hoons to join in the excitement.

Clean comfortable room versus a large house with a pool at the beach? Being confined to 1 room is not living, it is prison. Thai food 3 times a day is for paupers. If you cannot make money and can only shackle yourself into 1 room in Thailand you failed somewhere along the road in life. If people could get a decent looking, fit woman and had the money to spend to have a real life in their own country, they probably would have stayed there. I can tell you the girls in Florida put any Thai girl to shame. Or course if you are a fat old ugly prune and have to pay for someone that cannot even speak you language, then you might have a point. With North Korea coming unhinged with the missiles, Thailand might not be the best place when NK hits the red button!
I think that the missiles will be aimed at the USA not Thailand. But to the OP. If you have a good job I would agree the value in the States has to be better. if you are not insisting on living in the top areas then I would have thought it was pretty cheap there. Clothing, cars, gas and food seem incredibly cheap to me.

I have found that German manufactured Solar Panels to be the best.
Expensive in OZ but definitely worth fitting.
Of course Chinese products will get better with time.
A Solar Engineer friend told me the Germans were having panels made in China now, and that they are fine.

They will also keep rats and snakes down so not a bad thing to have.

i have never had to pay a deposit.........maybe the hotels i use are a bit more up market
You are lucky. I have stayed with the Hilton all around the world and usually have to prepay the first night. I agree the Hilton is not top notch but on the occasions the Peninsular or Mandarin were used it was the same. Maybe because we got special rates for the number of nights booked. If it was me running a hotel I would want the first night paid and a deposit or card details - if not then you find another hotel. On the other hand I most likely would not trust a smaller establishment with my card details. First night as a deposit and then I prepay my stay.

Nice shot - The Julia Butterfly is a native of the central American region and has invaded Thailand and is spreading. First collected in Chumpon in 2007. It is spreading southward through Malaysia. It was thought that the wild Thai population was from escaped animals from the Phuket Butterfly gardens however barcode investigation reveals a different subspecies D. iulia Hispaniola from Costa Rica. These are commonly exported around the world.

Interestingly I find a lot of younger people tend to be pretty grumpy as well. Certainly they sometimes lack common courtesy. Road rage, aggressive and a abusive language and a total disregard for others seems to be pretty common. Having said that I often prefer to be with younger people - the good ones are as always great fun and their zest for living is infectious. I guess there are grumpy people of all ages, but there are older ones that try to get on with life and enjoy things as best they can. I try to be in the latter group - it makes life better for me and better for those around me. A win - win situation.

Fair enough. Mostly rambling but the later posts were useful.

I just looked at the Yamaha NMax on the Thai Yamaha site. Looks really good. I like the disc brakes and ABS. Anyone got one and care to comment on whether it is a worthy successor to the mighty Nuovo?

This is a Forester - a sp of moth. Zygaenidae. There are some 1000 spp of these in the world but as with most moths new ones are being added all the time as many are not named or discovered yet. The Foresters are diurnal and feed at flowers. They are quite small so are often overlooked. They blow away the myth that all moths are night creatures and drab colours. This one is very smart looking. I attach a couple of pics of a similar one taken in Australia. This is about 20-25mm or 3/4 of an inch. Note the beautiful antenna. Also the iridescence. I shall see if U=I can find out more about Thai Foresters. If you see any more I would be keen to get details - eg where and what they are on etc.

McDs is, I believe, the only franchise allowed in heaven so no good having that. I would get a fresh egg - bury it and insist Ithat is the only one I want and that I only eat 100 year old egg. Give me a bit more time. The wait would be like 100 years at Immigration - - oh no I'm already dead and am actually in hell!

I find this an interesting topic. Years ago in UK the English reserve seemed to hold, and you said good morning to those you had met. But if I was out with the dogs and someone came the other way a good morning was pretty common. The only thing rude was to ignore the other person. Moving to Australia I was blown away buy everyone saying g'day. I loved it. The Ozzies were the best people in the world. Then off to the USA. here I found people thought you were going to attack them if you just spoke to someone you hadn't been introduced to. They were far less social and by my standards a rude lot. But in fact it is just their way. As soon as they realised you were a Pom or Ozzie (take your pick) they were often the most friendly of all. (Mostly NY and some LA). Nowadays I will say g'day less often than I did as I am more in tune with the modern trend that values people possibly a little less. But if I know someone, or am engaged in some activity that I am also involved in, I will acknowledge them even if it just a nod of the head. I think it has paid off over the years to make a bit of an effort to acknowledge that other people exist. Often I bump into someone and they recognise me from being out and about and saying g'day and it has helped if I need something. I guess everyone to his own, but I would say that if you feel threatened or upset or think someone is being rude for saying hello, then you have a strange outlook on life and it is your loss.

Anyone caught eating animal body parts should have their dingle dangler removed.
Better still - have them dangled in one of those dreadful cages that they keep big cats in, and let the animal feast away.

This topic repeats itself every few weeks. It is what it is. Still better value than most places. True I can drive to the top of the mountain where I lived for years for free but then I also paid nearly 5 000 000 Bht a year tax for the privilege.
