  1. With Win 7, all other PCs on the shared network need to be running Win 7 too. You can get around it, but this could be your problem. I had similar trouble here at home and had to resort to a "hack" to get around this. My son runs Win XP upstairs, but can now print out his music sheets on my printer down in my office. You didn't say if you have a wireless network, or a LAN. With the one page thing, are you using the printer software, or just using the default win driver?

  2. The monitor you are looking at is fine. The price is good too. Unless you are specializing in graphics, it should be more than enough - your VGA card will let you down before the monitor will - and I bought a Samsung SyncMaster 2232GW for 8500 baht just over a year ago which is very good(I am into graphics, games, movies and run all 3 @ 1680x1050), now looked at the SyncMaster 2333HD DMI which has even better specs for the same price today, but can see very little difference between them(apart from HDMI) in either graphics quality or HD Movie quality. With the 3 year warranty, I will stick with what I have for another year. Go with what you are looking at if you are happy with it. In the end, why bother with all the specs drama if it does what you want.....thebom PS: I have 2x ATI Radeon 4850HD GPUs - DDR3 1x GB each@ Crossfired with HDMI outputs.

  3. this may explain why i see so many business with no customers.

eyeglass shops as one example, i always think they fronts for something shady..........

open air beer bars in patpong...........must be farang owned.............. :):D:D . farangs have mastered the art of running business with no income..............just how do they do it................. :D:D:D

You bring forth a good point here. I have lived here a long time and have seen literally dozens of these places, that are often in VERY EXPENSIVE locations, like the "Gaysorn building" or the "World Trade Center" who must be paying 20,000 to 50,000 baht a month plus for rent, plus staff who do nothing but sit around, even when you go into their store for a look. It's like they are not even interested in a sale. I rarely if ever see customers in these places and have even made a point of going for a look on different days, different times etc. but still see no customers. The value of the stock alone in some of them, must run in to millions of baht. They must either run at a huge loss, or as you say, there is some thing else going on. One store comes to mind that sells "high end" home sound systems, which go for 300 to 500 thousand baht or more. 5 months on from my first visit, they still have the same units in stock! I made a note of the serial numbers. This is one of many mysteries, I would love to solve...... :D

  4. This is a great topic with some excellent posts. Please keep it up as there is good info here, that is otherwise hard to find. Nice one.

    hi there neutronbom

i see from your Post that you come from near sarasin bridge , do you have any idea what the fishing is like out across the bar there in the andaman side rather than in phang nga bay.

I have recently been launching at ao por and was wondering if there is anywhere to launch near sarasin.

the braces near the bridge look quite flat and look like it should be possible to launch off. do you or any others have any knowledge of fishing in the area or launching possibilities .

by the way my boat is reasonably light and i have a 4wd l

Hi there. Yes there is some very good fishing on the other side of the bar. I have been out many times with Thai friends across that bar in a "long boat" and we rarely come back empty handed. As the poster below this said, those two rocks have some good fishing. There are 2 main problems going out from the bridge. Although there are 2 very easy places to launch your boat by 4WD - the fishing wharf and at the hardstand - on the Phuket side of the bridge, the first problem is the danger of crossing the bar. It has claimed many lives in the past and is not to be underestimated! It looks easy - at times it can be - but with cross currents and the wrong wind, even large boats have come to grief. Thai fishing boats go over the bar all the time, but they are wary of it and give it a lot of respect. The second problem, is that you have to travel quite a way out to find good fish. My friends use a GPS to find their way now and we usually leave the bridge at around 1 or 2 in the morning, to arrive at the good spots just before dawn. Say 3 to 4 hours travel at around 16 to 18 Knots. Sorry I can't be more specific as to where to fish, just assure you that there is really good fish if you spend the time looking. Eagle fish, tuna, grouper, sailfish and many more are out there. My advice is to use a local guide at first, along with a hand held GPS to mark the spots when you get there. PM me if you need help getting a local fisherman to guide you out. I know a few who live near the bridge who are not greedy and are very reliable.

  5. I don't think it's a browser hijack, but the websites have been hijacked, including Google sometime. I get constantly "warnings" and "attacks stopped". Most websites don't have security scripts installed, like PHPID etc.. Sites getting injected in droves, something your common security program can't recognize.

Most of the injection threats are coming from China, Indonesia, Korea, USA, Malaysia, Pakistan and a few others. Data are collected before handed over to law enforcement. Also don't forget when you're a webmaster to install project honey pot, which is successfully fighting spam.

Many thanks for that link to "honeypot" elcent. That site contains a lot of really good advice to help fight this kind of web attack. Having read up on how to implement some basic steps, I will be making some changes to my site today. Good one. thebom :)

  6. The post telling of the "websites" being infected is most likely the cause of your problems. Can you do a full memory and boot record scan on startup(before it boots to desktop) with your anti virus? It takes ages(depending on the size of your drives), but will often find the more deep rooted worms etc. that a normal scan will not. I use Avast Pro on Win 7 and I need to "schedule" this scan to run on next start up. The other thing you could try is to backup your book marks, history and pass words etc. then try deleting all your "cookies and browsing history" in firefox. I use "Xmarks and FEBE" addons for this and I've never lost a thing yet! Checkout the addons under tools in firefox, then browse "all addons" for the latest tools. Try the latest version of firefox too, if you don't already have it. I did have a similar problem for a while, but after updating Firefox and adding some "addons" it went away. Good luck.

  7. By law you need to employ a Thai Captain so you need one that knows the local fishing grounds so your customers are happy and return. What you really need to do is some simple market research, find out what is currently available locally and when they are available for booking, if they are booked up a week or two in advance then that tells you there is a market, if they are free the next day any time you call then the reverse is probably true. Also do an income expenditure forecast not forgetting tax payments for your staff, boat maintenance, fuel & berthing costs etc , you get the picture. As with any investment you really need to do your homework not forgetting the out of the ordinary things like having the boat taken out of the water and a qualified marine surveyor check it out.

You are right about the Captain being Thai, I think you will find you also need a Thai engineer on board too for charter, at least I know that applies to yachts and any large boats. The idea has merrit though, as apart from the tourist $$, there are an amazing amount of Thai people/businessmen here in Bangkok and many other places, who go fishing out of Phuket, Pratchuob Kiri Khan, Cha Am, Surat Thani etc once and many of them twice a month! I personally know at least 5 Thai guys here in Bangers, who are devoted to their salt water fishing and who spend a lot of money on it each month. You would need a local fisherman who knows where and when to go, to be successful though - at least in the beginning - though his wages are very small anyway. Put them on a percentage of profit as bonus and keep the wage down as low as possible as an incentive. Fishing charter could work if done well. Like JohnC says, do your research thoroughly first. If it is moored, any planing hull, or fast semi-planing hull, will need regular hull scrubbing to perform and keep fuel costs low. It costs me 1500 baht a time, to have my 22 ton 50' yacht done by a local diver. If you are going out regular, this is not a big issue. "Jotun Paints" have a product in many colors called Seaforce 90, which is a self polishing antifouling system, that cost me about 3800 baht for 10 liters(20 liters for my 50 footer) which can also stand long periods of dry dock and will last up to 5 years in the water. It is not really ideal for a boat that will spend most of its life unused though, as the "self polishing" aspect needs the boat to run at over 8 knots for 2 hours or more. I say "go for it" but go carefully!!

  8. I think I know as much truth about Thaksin ( I assume you were not referring to King Taksin) as the average person on these forums, and I've been living in Thailand far longer than most. You would be surprised at how much we agree on many points regarding Thaksin. I just don't share your sympathies for the right-wing military brutes who have established their surrogates in power at present.

I have to agree with you, that there are plenty of those too, but with a lot of luck and some solid support, the dinos may eventually disappear like their ancestors did. Our man did quietly get rid of one close to him recently, which was well done I thought. Hardly a ripple either - mind you, hardly any Thais liked him either!

  9. Thanks Animatic for using reason, fact, clarity and patience with addressing those on this forum who continue to believe a Thai PM comes to power via gaining votes from a popular election, as happens in the US. And thanks for showing in a measured manner how Abhisit was not put in power by a coup, but rather by putting together a coalition of popularly elected MP's, as happens within a functioning parliamentary system. The coup happened in September 2006, whereas PM Abhisit gained the PM's seat in December 2008 - that's 28 months and three PM's later. Anyone saying the current PM was put in place by the military coup is up a creek without a paddle.

That Abhisit somehow came to power without the strings being pulled by the military is a fantasy that few Thais or international journalists would believe.

Yeah. One day you may wake up too. Though from your posts I find it unlikely! Are you another who can't see the truth about about Taksin? You have my sympathy, not anger.

  10. animatic

What is it that you people don't understand in animatics' posts? All he has said is true and reasonable. No one with "less spine" than Khun Abhisit would have survived this long, let alone functioned and moved along as he has done. He is not corrupt, he has Thailands best interests at heart and is making the best possible progress, from a bad economy, against strong though stupid opposition, in very difficult circumstances. No one is perfect, especially in Government. You take the best that's offered, who seems to be doing the right thing and you support him or her. It will never be perfect. Can anyone give me a perfect example of Government anywhere? The man deserves credit and help for what he is trying to achive.

  11. Several times, but the most memorable was in NZ at Tahuna beach around midnight, more years ago than I care to admit! My mate and I, along with our two girlfriends(all in our 20s), rumbled down to "a quiet piece of sand" at low tide, in his ulta-rodded, fire engine red '36' Chev coupe. After more than a few beers to get the girls relaxed, we were hard at it. Unfortunately, he had installed these "trick front seats" and only 20 or so minutes into the action, Tracy his girlfriend(she was on top) got her ass jammed onto the horn(trick horn too of course) by their seat folding and springing forward, then sticking there! As I was trying frantically to release the bloody thing, the air horn going full volume, at least 30 cars in the car park above us that we hadn't noticed in the dark, all turned on their lights to see what the heck all the racket was - they were probably all at it too, before our noisy interruption - and there we were, in full glory. I am thankful to this day, that we didn't have mobile phones back then, or my naked hairy butt would still be on youtube! thebom

  12. I don't blame you for being angry about this injustice.

It is true that Thailand is a very corrupt country. Their are situations when something may be done to mitigate these types of circumstance and occasions when their are not. You have to try and do what if anything can be done. Don't just be a sheep.

I think anybody who thinks of actually building a house in Thailand better think twice. Why invest so much in Thailand when you are treated in such unfair manners. Stop enriching the corrupt greedy scum.

You should take a closer look at your own government in the good ole USA, before condemning this country. They deal in corruption(all over the world) on a scale equal to the "gross national product" here. Tidy your own back yard, before making comments like this!

  13. BTW... welcome to Thailand. You lose. You will always lose here. They won't allow it any other way.

only those who cannot adapt to reality lose. others live quite happily in Thailand and have a dirty grin on their faces when they hear about "crimes against Farangs". the reason why they grin is that they compare the crimes against Farangs in Thailand with the crimes against themselves committed by the taxman if they lived in their home country.

e.g. what is €UR 6-8k one time expense compared to the 47.5% total income tax in my home country? answer: peanuts! each and every year again and again and again they insist on taxes on income or capital gains generated from the net of already taxed money. and after they carry me to the crematorium or graveyard the taxman is there to put his hands in the pockets of my heirs.

Fully agree with you Naam. I was paying 48% to the taxman, plus GST at the supermarket! One of the many good reasons we live here. Death duties. Aint it a bi#ch when they even steal from the dead??

  14. Well done detective. Now work on this problem. You have angered the local mafia, specifically the boss, he knows your name, where you live and that you do not intend to stop your efforts to take away his rice bowl. Use your deductive powers here. The outcome is predictable. Dummy up.

Please quickly show me a place where I can hide.

Oh and by the way I'm not a detective,I only try to get my home hooked up to the public electricity network at a fair price.

If you are really not too concerned for your skin(or you own a couple of "Glocks" and know how to use them)go to channel 3 news with your proof. They love this sort of scandal and the main man speaks perfect English, as does the lovely lady beside him. They are quite impartial too, so take as much proof as you can. I don't mind a "bit of padding" if reasonable - though I personally wont stand it, as I've been here too long - but yours is way over the top I feel. I am starting to believe that the Gvt are actually trying to stamp down on this as well, so help them out and report it. If you go through with this, you are going up against powerful people and you should fully understand that fact. As I speak fluent Thai, I have always dealt with things like this myself on a one to one basis and try not to make them "lose face", while not hurting my own pocket too much either. You can't win them all though, and that's when I unleash my super weapon - my Thai wife - and she is much meaner than me! This has always resulted in the other party dealing with me, in any future problems:) thebom

  15. I think the safety standards have been meet. Put up a fence then the challenge is then extended to getting over the fence or if there are a lot of you through the fence. While you are thinking about how to get the p1ssed chicks and the BBQ you just found from motel unit 13 through the fence you can have another few beers. It gradually all becomes more logical. :D

Then once the aussie front row have shoulder charged the fence and lowered it :) its party time.

Billy said there was a sign by the pool forbidding swimming at night: "Everyone goes in even though it's written that violators will be fined 2,000 baht (about $60). No one cares. We were all swimming there."

The drunker the bigger the challenge. And that is why the sign is there forbidding night use because no matter how much you pool/fool proof everything you cannot fool proof drunks at their busier and drunkess time - the night.

Sad but true. Good comment, except a Kiwi front row would do it in half the time. Just like Sydney to Hobart. Signs are there for a reason - but they are never proof against high spirits and youth.

  16. Thanks for that Bina. Good to see some sensible comments finally coming out - at least on this page. As Bina says, any place catering for a young crowd out for a good time, should take extra care to avoid this sort of tragedy. When I was that age, a sign meant little to me either - was even a challenge. I often wonder how it is, that I made it this far too. I just hope that there will be some good to come out of this terrible accident. A few 200 baht circuit breakers would be a good start in many places!

  17. I am an electrician of 42 years in the UK ,if the Thai government did any electrical regulations the same as the UK there would not be so many deaths from electrocution . Accidents happen but if work done properly disconnection time is point 4 of a second and no one is killed , in fact you will not feel anything it has tripped that quick. I know Thailand is very bad i have lived here for 8 years with my wife and the things they do are criminal. RIP, young man and sorry for your loss to his family.

Good point and I agree with you, but it can not happen over night. If you have lived here that long, you will know that also. When I personally ( I am not a sparky) earthed out our house, and gave the high temp shower heater its own earth and trip, neighbors asked why........now you will see many houses near me have done the same. It takes time and understanding, not just criticism.

  18. I feel very sorry for any young person, that finds death, before having a chance to live life. Doesn't matter where he comes from does it? Or in the end what caused it. He is gone and that can't be changed. My sympathy goes to his family and friends. What I really don't understand about posts like this, is that how it is, that with so few facts in hand, these posts all turn into a shit slinging match! A young guy has died and so many here turn a sad post into an ugly debate. What is wrong with this picture? Don't any of you care for his family's feelings? SuriyaJ does make a good point, that if so many posters on this forum(if they are even in T/L) seem to hate this country so much, they should get the heck away to another country. That does not mean, that there aren't poor safety standards to be found in many places, cause there are. That does not mean either, as SuriyaJ pointed out, that 65 million Thais are responsible, or that there is a general lack of intelligence. I hear many Thai people complain about the very same issues! Obviously they DO CARE! It's not their fault, if you can't speak Thai and so don't understand what they are saying! What these posters tend to forget, is that the countries they compare Thailand to, their so called perfect worlds, have been developing under a totally different culture for a hundred years or more, where as here, they have pretty much gone from a rural economy, to what we have today, in just 20 years! I hate to think where my country would be, if we had gone from the time of the Maoris, to what we have today in just 20 years! People should lighten up a lot on this forum, and learn not to turn a very sad post, for whatever reason, into a hate debate. I love Thailand, that's why I live here. Some good constructive criticism here, without the vitriol, would do far more good. I think we all know, that there are some things that need changing or improving here, but not for the benefit of the posters on T/V, good or bad, but for the benefit of all who choose to live here in Thailand. I wish a few would think before they post in future. Talk about insensitive!!

  19. Looks like the Kiwis are set for a good finish to round out the year. I find the Yahoo7 feed hopeless with the internet speeds having dropped right off due to the holidays. The yacht tracker works fine though, as does the "Google Earth" feed. Us (ex) Kiwis are sure showing the Aussies our hairy cheeks this year. Alfa Romeo had it sussed right from the start. Wish my old 50 footer looked even half as good as Alfa Romeo does - or even better could I afford the money to buy one like that!

  20. True service is horrible.

First time i signed up i got the internet running in 4 days.

Since i moved to a new apartment , it took them 3 weeks just to have it done when there is a phone line ready available.

Back in Singapore when i moved all i had to do was tell the ISP im moving and the next 24hrs the internet was moved to the new place.

Internet in Thailand is such a hassel.

Now i moved again to a permenant apartment True says that they cant move the internet connection after i waited for 3 weeks yet again. So i called up TOT and another ISP company that i want internet installed , they said OK no problem.

Im never going back to True again after all they problems they caused.

It's really weird how so many people get such a different response from True. I have had very good service and help from them. Had a technician out twice to sort some problem. He knew what he was doing and wouldn't take the 100 baht tip I offered him! Both times I called in the morning and he was out by lunchtime the first time and 3.00 pm the second. Maybe it is because I speak fluent Thai - but I cant be the only one able to speak Thai. thebom

  21. Sounds like your current telephone line isnt a True line, if that is the case they will need/want to connect you upto a True line first... sounds like this is the delay.

When i applied to get True internet at my appartment, i already had a True line there, The process was initiated by filling out the online request form on their website and the True agent called me to confirm all the details the next day... they sent over the Modem with a courier a few days later, who was asked to pick up the paperwork from me etc and then the service was 'turned on' about three days later. The whole process took 1 week.

Same connection time for me too, except I have a TOT line (and still have) but I wouldn't give you 10 baht for my line speed today or the last 3 days. Keeps dropping out too, at times for 5 to 10 mins! Usual speed 3 to 5 MBs down to 20 or 30 KBs! Have you had anything like that recently? Maybe just my area and the holidays. I have had no complaints to speak of, and pretty good speed and service for near a year now.
