  1. Sounds like your current telephone line isnt a True line, if that is the case they will need/want to connect you upto a True line first... sounds like this is the delay.

When i applied to get True internet at my appartment, i already had a True line there, The process was initiated by filling out the online request form on their website and the True agent called me to confirm all the details the next day... they sent over the Modem with a courier a few days later, who was asked to pick up the paperwork from me etc and then the service was 'turned on' about three days later. The whole process took 1 week.

Same connection time for me too, except I have a TOT line (and still have) but I wouldn't give you 10 baht for my line speed today or the last 3 days. Keeps dropping out too, at times for 5 to 10 mins! Usual speed 3 to 5 MBs down to 20 or 30 KBs! Have you had anything like that recently? Maybe just my area and the holidays. I have had no complaints to speak of, and pretty good speed and service for near a year now.

  2. This is a neat easy tool, that you can use to modify or create your own Aero themes in Win 7. When you create a theme, it starts off using the default Aero and you work your way through it from there. You'll need to download Style 7, as well as a UxTheme patch to allow this mod to work. Down load then open the UxTheme patch pack, to get the 3 x .dll patches(choose x64 bit or x32 bit ) that you will then paste into "system32" subfolder in the main windows folder. These 3x .dlls enable "unsigned themes" to work in windows.

Then d-load the Style7 pack here

Just follow the easy instructions, to get the theme that you want. Here is a screen shot of what the Style7 app looks like. Good luck and hope you enjoy it. thebom.

  3. Thought I would try this out. First post here, so hope it works! This group are doing really well here in BK now. Played for "Kings Birthday" concert at the park and were very hot.

and in case the youtube link doesn't work here it is the old way

  4. Thanks for the info Tywais. I can now see why microsoft d-loads are always faster than than any others! I also have to wonder, how many customers "True" truly have, as they have quite good bandwidth access. As you can see from the pic here, I didn't think much of their performance over the weekend! I was down to just a few KBs at times and I lost my connection every half hour or so. Cheers. thebom

  5. If you don't have a D: drive, which you should store "all" your sys recovery/backup files on, I would say follow the post to go advanced properties on system backup/ restore point, then delete most of the "OLD" sys images and restore points - do a system restore today, just in case you make some mistake. I have 500 GBs on my D: drive, of which I am using only around 80 GBs for my "important files" and I need to delete my old backup and recovery file regular, or they will fill up the drive in just 2 weeks!

  6. I notice something interesting on these threads. Europeans have bottomless sympathy for everyone else except their own kind. I wonder why that is? Or are Europeans just patronizing other races? Whenever a certain visa is not allowed or visa runs are cut down there are hoots and cheers from exiled whitey. Whenever a Farang jumps out of a window it's 'serves him right'. Foreigner arrested for overstay: 'didn't he know that before he arrived?' 'He deserves IDC...' What's wrong, didn't things work out for you in the west you have to bring your cynicism here? Where's your spirit of community? Thai people can meet anywhere around the world and instantly start chatting. White people start fighting over who was there first essentially. I mean who made you people the stewards of the world? I think European folks have ruined their own countries and now with their self-hatred are trying to ruin another countries. I wish you would all go back home and sort out your own messes before creating new ones abroad.

Well said and to the point. Except not all Farangs here in LOS are like the ones you so well describe. I sure don't fit that category and have met many others here that don't either. I don't give a hoot for "nationality" or color. Just quality, which comes in many forms. I fear your statement about messing up other countries, may well affect this country too. I live here because overall, I love this country and its culture, despite the many short comings we see around us. I don't believe our culture or morals, should be imported along with us as well. There are over 60 million people live here, and in the 22 years I have been coming here, and in the over 10 years I have lived here, I can honestly say that the majority of the Thai people (near the same % as in any civilized country) have a similar concept of right or wrong, good or bad. Thai people in general, are certainly more tolerant of deviant or outside the box behavior than Westerners are - take these Swedes for example, despite what we think of them, most of what help they did get, was from local Thais (probably the same ones ripping off the tourists, I know) but they did get some support, so some of my friends down there tell me. You can see more of this attitude when you see how they look at lady boys, or gays in general. They are not indifferent to cruelty or murder - they may not talk about it to us - but I listen to the many comments they make to each other, about this killing or that robbery and they are saying pretty much what we would in the same situation. It all gets back to the Asian concept of face. Unlike a lot of us, they don't usually air their dirty washing in public and if there is a way to solve a problem without losing face, then that is the way to go. Most of them still believe that helping out people like the Swedes, will give them a better "next life" or just because they want to help. There are more homeless people in many Western countries than you see here and Thais don't have a welfare system to fall back on, like those in our countries do. What does that say for our culture or values? A few Thais I know well, after returning from holiday or business in the west, have asked me... "why so many homeless and street people" in country so rich? I still don't know what to say.

  7. Alcoholism or alcohol dependence is a diagnosable disease characterized by several factors including a strong craving for alcohol, continued use despite harm or personal injury, the inability to limit drinking, physical illness when drinking stops, and the need to increase the amount drunk in order to feel the effects .

Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that results in harm to one's health, interpersonal relationships or ability to work. Certain manifestations of alcohol abuse include failure to fulfill responsibilities at work, school or home; drinking in dangerous situations such as while driving; legal problems associated with alcohol use and continued drinking despite problems that are caused or worsened by drinking. Alcohol abuse can lead to alcohol dependence

    taken from http://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/faqs.htm#12

I understand all that you have posted, the part I dont understand is (as with all drugs) theres that initial stage where one first has their first drink, their first shot etc etc.......thats where it all goes wrong. Its definately a self inflicted injury, its not like sitting in your loungeroom and a plane crashes through the ceiling striking you on the head....is it?

Quite true, but I drink the odd scotch or beer because I like the taste and usually with good company along with good conversation - I don't get drunk (have been but hated the loss of control and the bloody hangover) and I go minutes without drinking - just kidding, I often don't drink for a week or more. The point being, that having a drink doesn't make me an alcoholic, or lose control over how much I drink. I like it, but don't need it. Just is, that for some reason, many people can not help themselves and are unable to control it. I don't know why they are like that either, but the fact remains that they are. Is like the many social drug users who are not addicts. Case in point. Most people who take prescribed opiates for pain, don't go on to being drug addicts. Read the part about addiction and the medical statistics in the following link, that relates to people who have to take opiates to control pain.

. Part of the population just can't help themselves. Weird but true.

  8. Perfect timing, to come home to Sweden in Early January. Be prepared for a 40 to 50 degree temperature difference

Alcoholics are the same, wherever they come from.

I agree. Alcoholism, like the use of other drugs, is willful self-abuse.

    I disagree - alcoholism is a disease.

Some sanity showing up at last. Thank you for a good link, that may help open some narrow minds, to let in a bit of light - if they even bother to click on it that is.....

  9. Strange story. They're lucky to be from Sweden; If they were Canadians, they would be left to rot by the Canadian embassy, no doubt.

If they are alcoholic they should seek treatment before coming back in the land of sins.

    P.

I suggest you learn about your country making an inaccurate statement off in a public forum. Social assistance programs are the responsibility of the provinces. That means medical care and "welfare" payments. Some provinces are more generous than others and that is a reflection of the respective provincial electorate's sentiment. The Canadian federal government does disburse funds in the event people are victimized abroad. These people are not victims, but made the decision to run off to Thailand and live this way.

FYI and for those Canadians in Thailand that are victims of crime

What is the Victims Fund — Emergency Financial Assistance for Canadians Victimized Abroad?

As of April 1, 2007, emergency financial assistance is available to individual Canadians who are victims of specified serious violent crimes in a foreign jurisdiction for emergency situations of undue hardship where no other source of financial assistance is available. (The specified crimes are homicide, sexual assault, and aggravated assault or assault with serious personal violence, including against a child.) This emergency financial assistance is available through the Victims Fund, which is administered by the Department of Justice Policy Centre for Victim Issues (PCVI).

Who may apply for emergency financial assistance?

Any Canadian may apply to the Department of Justice for emergency financial assistance if he or she is:

    the victim of a violent crime in a foreign jurisdiction;

a family member of a victim who is dead, ill or incapacitated due to their victimization in a foreign jurisdiction; or

in the case of a child, a parent or the person responsible for the care and support of the child.

Make an effort to learn about your country first. Then consider that many hardworking taxpayers in Canada, Sweden, wherever, do not wish to fund the "rescue" of such people. I sure as heck don't. Dig a little deeper and you'll find that this couple probably alienated their family and had all sorts of help and assistance offered on their spiral into the gutter. Sometimes it's best to let such people hit the bottom so that they seek change and help of their own free will.

You are probably right in what you say, but I can't help thinking, that the right sort of help early enough on, could have prevented this situation. It could even be speculated that family problems was what may have started or caused this tragedy in the first place. Then again. Many people are predisposed to alcoholism and drug addiction. Seems to be part of being human. Even some animals (not just primates either) seem predisposed to drugs and alcohol!

  10. my point is the lack of compassion being expressed by so many here, people are so arrogant, they never think this could happen to them...

Nice to find someone that I agree with, you took the words out of my heart, stink can hit the fan at any time and one can lose it, we should reach out, not kick, when one is down, a bunch of heart-less people out there.

You make a good point and I agree with both of you. However, that's always part of the "fun???" of reading this forum. I often see a post like this one, then wait for all the kill them, hang them, scum bag, they are guilty and deserve it, kick them out type comments to come out before all the facts are known. The rabidness and vilification by some of our "good" forum members, never cease to amaze me by their creativeness and willingness to pull people down, without, as I have said, knowing all the facts. lol. Do all these posters even live here? It's just as well, that the many good and helpful posts on Thaivisa, still outweigh the bad ones. Merry Christmas? Not for many I fear.

  11. I wonder if they are members of Thai Visa?

Wouldn't surprise me. The photo of that guy is spot on for how I picture most members of this forum.

Are you sure your not just looking in the mirror? :)

I agree with you neverdie. With a forum name like "DeganFarang" and a totally out of order comment like that, he or she is just asking for a lambasting. "The dog" or in this case he who barks/laughs loudest............etc.

  12. I think George and the team, are doing a great job. This forum must have one of the broadest range of posts of any forum. I know many have been very helpful to me personally, like wise, I have been able to help a few others on the forum too. I think George deserves all the credit he can get. Well done.

  13. TOT is for people like me - when there's nothing else available. By and large, it sucks. If you are in Pattaya, go with True or TT&T / 3BB (same thing?)....

My TOT 3Mbit has been pretty good up until 2 days ago, now it cuts out regularly which is very annoying. The problem with TOT is then that these things never get fixed, or if they get fixed, it's accidental - not because you called and reported a problem.

And yeah - they run a copper wire to your house, and you get a phone number assigned, which is then your contract number. You don't have to install or pay for an actual physical phone.

I stick with the Old Solomon edge and put up with the eternity it takes at times. But it works albeit very slowly.

As for the varities mentioned here, they all seem to disappoint. It's a thrid world country reluctant or incapable or investing in a technology that wroks. When they are banning so many internet out of fear, loathing and ignornce you can understand why they don't want to speed things up.

Also, the low levels of education or lack of amongst politicians means they are incapable of grasping the argument or placing Thailand on an international footing. The last thing they want is an educated populace, just like this very Thaivisa set up doesn't want anything other than ingratiating comments about how wonderful it all is. It simply isn't but you're not to be critical, even objectively critical.

That is partly explained by the lack of insight by those with the correcting pen.

Red line that lot. Don't worry, I'll get my coat.

You are not quite right in what you say. As for the "moderators" I will mention that later in this post. I have been using true hi speed(oxymoron I know) here just outside Bangkok and have had only minor problems(lived here about 9 years now). Speed anything from 1 mbs to 5 mbs d-load and local about 2 to 3mbs. International never gets over 512kbs upload, but I have had 1.2mbs d-load - sure, when kids out of school, they all go online gaming, so speed drops to around 200-350 kbs d-load and 150 to 300kbs upload - as to unfavorable comments being allowed on Thaivisa, you are wrong. About the only thing you can not criticize is the Royal family and that is as it should be, apart from the FACT that the royal family here do so much for the people and country (unlike in the west), it is part of Thai culture to respect the Royals no matter what and this is T/L - take it or leave. As to banning internet sites, one of the biggest probs we have here on the net is teenage porn and criticism of the Royal family. Often this occurs on a decent site, but the site gets hijacked by these kids(and others) to solicit customers. By kids I mean both sexes, aged from 13 to 16, which under Thai law is illegal and I personally agree with it. I agree it is a pity that otherwise good sites get closed down, but what can you expect the authorities to do? Thaivisa in my own experience is very tolerant of critical posts(check out some of mine!) and you must remember that this website is clicked on all over the world, so the "Mods" have to maintain some sort of balance of standards and I wouldn't want their job at all, or they will loser readers and the site will get a bad rep. You call this a 3rd world country and I guess that is a fair comment, but T/L is I think number 5 on the list of world exporters. If it is 3rd world at the moment, it's catching up fast. The Government seem to be catching an awful lot of corruption cases - including the once "untouchables" very high up, so hopefully there is a change for the better in the wind. You can not expect that to happen over night, but it is happening( I speak fluent Thai and see the news every night) and a lot of the cases that are shown, are not in the English rags(who wants to air their dirty laundry to the tourists) so if you want to make an informed, educated post, my advice is to learn to speak Thai so that not only will you better understand their culture( a major reason us expats come out here), but you will be better informed on what is really going on.

  14. Another thing I forgot to mention, is that my partner is Thai himself. Either I was too tired or the "Leo" was getting to me at the time I made the post. We are more than getting by, but have just done a complete refit on my 50' ketch, so we are a little short of the readies at the moment, or I would give her the $ myself!
