  1. i dont know why people invest in these things when you can make 60% in one of the Thai Bank funds

I suppose people just dont do their homework

You can make 60% in one of the Thai Bank funds???

    Please explain.

    Time to retire!

These funds are run by the Thai Banks such as Bangkok Bank under Bualuang Securities which invests in a portfolio of shares or other instruments. The BBL funds have made over 60% in a year (beats the 1% in the BBL savings account). Personally I look after my own investments in the Thai Stock Exchange. I have an online KIM ENG investment broker account in real time. I have made 400% so far since May last year. And yes I have retired. I hope this explains it.

Wow. Some of the rates quoted in these posts....are incredible. I am in the wrong sector it seems.Although the way the calculation is made, like when you think you got a cheap loan, could just have bearing on this me thinks.

  2. Pyramid schemes seem to get tagged onto anything fraudulent but obtaining money under false pretenses is the correct deal here as they are not propagating "take from Peter to give Paul" - a true pyramid. DSI and whoever else should burn these people but chances are they are not within Thailand, only another website to beware of. Amazing how they can block porn but not fraud!

It is also amazing to me, how some person can be caught with a handful of pills and receive 20 odd years to life in many cases, where as the scum who literally take peoples lives away from them in many cases by all these scams(many elderly get stung for all their "life savings), are usually handed down a few years inside to 5 or so, if that. Then this injustice is compounded by the court in its generosity, by whacking a huge, pointless, unpayable fine on the perp, ensuring a return to crime like this or drugs on release to pay for it. What am I missing here? Sure someone will enlighten me.

  3. Aside from the fact that the Nation's article seems to have a number of errors, like millions vs. billions? If each investor put in B3800 it would take 16,578,947 investors to get to 63 billion baht, and 16,579 to get to 63 million baht.

In any event, don't blame the government. When "investing" money, the owner of the money is responsible for conducting due diligence - BEFORE putting money into anything. Your money, your risk. In a pyramid scheme the early investors usually get a return, and thus will not complain. The early investors become the "credibility" for other "investors", who eventually lose their money.

There is no law against investing money, so as far as I know, the government cannot do anything until there are complaints. When people see that their money appears to be making money, they do not complain. Since the minimum required investment is relatively small at B3800, and the returns shown on the web site are likely to be much higher than any market rates, why should anyone complain until they are pretty sure that the company will not pay them per the terms of the agreement?

It makes no difference whether you are investing B3800 or B3,800,000. Failure to act responsibly, failure to investigate the company and the people behind the company is not the "fault" of the government. Pyramid and other scams are only profitable if they find greedy, gullible people. The "investors" might get lucky and get some money back, but usually they do not.

I totally agree with your accurate post. Before anyone thinks about how much to invest, or even begins to start calculating profit not yet accrued, check, check, check. Online is an easy place to start looking, but it is also the easiest place to fake. Doing as much "real world" digging as possible, is much more important for any claimed "high profit" returns. It is quite possible, to get money out of these "rips", but only if one gets in first on the ground so to speak and does not put in a huge amount of money that will warn them off. Lumumba claims this in his post. I too have had some luck this way, but a good rule of thumb(which seems obvious but people will be greedy and ignore it) is that the higher the interest rate offered, the more likely you will be to get ripped, or even lose the money in an honest venture, which is bound by the same laws of return/risk!! If either online or real world digging shows the scheme has been running for more than a few weeks - at most 6 is my own rule(the number of investors can lengthen, or shorten this rule), over that I would forget it. Look at the join date of the first few so called success's, who they shine the light on, "as proof" of their claims if possible. Call these "winners" or email them saying how you don't want to start too early, so the "slow start/low return" is over etc....whatever, but if you can't spin a bit of decent/believable bullshit to convince these "cons" you are real, you shouldn't even begin playing this game - you can always correct any inaccuracies you claim or made by mistake later, if the scheme proves to be genuine. 95% are scams and the other 5% are too high risk to try for most. There are usually some such details regarding the winner, join date, gender, age etc posted along with the people who really have been paid out, as they want them to look to you, as Kosher as poss. Of course some of these "winners??" will be involved in the scam itself - though usually not too many cause of the "greed factor" in the scammers too. I have lost money a couple of times taking this gamble, when I either knew or strongly suspected a fraud. I only blame myself. You need to find out "how to get good info" for yourself, then decide if the risk is worth it. Don't ever invest money that you can not afford to lose. That's one of the most common reasons that gamblers go under or even worse, get crippled or shot. Never gamble or even invest, if you are desperate. I'm sure many posters are yawning and bored shtless by the so obvious points I have made here, but as obvious as they seem to those posters, many here, are people who will still forget - choose to ignore these "obvious" rules when they are either greedy or desperate or whatever. Just hope some if not all the people who need this advice, read this post through. PS: I would love a "PM" from the poster who claims he is getting 60% from a bank(any bank), to tell me which bank it is....Cheers. thebom.

  4. Mine shoots the ceramic type pellets through both sides of a beer can on single, or auto. Ask any taxi to take you to "Sapparn Lek - which is bridge steel translated", near China Town. On one side of that bridge, you can have inexpensive good quality repairs and mods done on any model. They also sell a huge range of spare parts and accessories. I am told that any guns other than the plastic pellet type, are illegal.....

  5. And as for Thailand rooting out corruption- not in many lifetimes

So lets start in our lifetime.

At least now we have someone who wants to try.

Unlike previous Govts who led the way in corruption.

You´r right, even the longest journey starts with a step.

I agree with both you and ianfs' thoughts. At least a step is being taken by our Prime Minister, who I believe is an honest man, who really wants to improve this country. What he needs is all our support, as many of his corrupt ministers certainly do not give him any support at all. Simply rubbishing the mans efforts, will not do anything to change this or the many other problems, not only in Thailand. The man is strong, but his team is weak and/or corrupt. Without this first step and all of our backing and support, his efforts will for sure come to nothing. Instead of whinging and slinging shit, try to explain and convince all your friends and neighbors, that this first step in the right direction is only the beginning and without it, nothing will ever change for the better. We may not see it, but better that the future does, than does not...........

  6. Don't know about brushes, but there is a store near Bang Lum Poo, that has a huge supply of paper and some art supplies. I know the type of rice paper you mean, as a friend does traditional style Chinese painting. Store is on Rachadamnern rd(main road to Pinklao) and is 400 - 500 mtrs toward the China Town side of the Bung Lum Poo intersection and on that side. If you walk from the intersection on that side, towards the temple, victory monument and China Town, you can't miss it.

  7. has anyone ever read any intelegent comments on this site about any topic? I know I have read alot of BS and realy stupid comments. most of you really suck with no brains.

How about you add some intelligent commentary to prove you're not the dumbest of them all.

Yeah. I go along with "tropo" on this. There are a wealth of good, helpful and humorous posts here. Getting anything out of this site - or any site, depends on how much you can actually read and a lot on which posts you tend to choose. There seem to be idiots on any forum, just as in real life. Get used to it.

  8. The "Yachting Seminar on ICT Infrastructure and Data Center 2010" event was organized jointly by the Ministry of Industry's Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) and PSU-Phuket's Faculty of Engineering.

Still in the early development stages, the site was created by PSU staff and students with funding from the OIE.

The OIE has earmarked a total of 2.99 million baht in funding for the Data Center project study phase, work on which began August 31 and ends in February 2011.

Yesterday's gathering was held to brainstorm ideas with the operators of some 60 local yachting and marine tourism businesses invited to hash out the best way to establish the Data Center.

As the project is still in the development stages, it has still not been decided whether the center will exist solely in cyberspace or whether it will take the form of an actual office with staff.

Nice! More than a million US dollars for a six month study! What a joke! For what? What a brainstorm! More greed and corruption in the guise of doing nothing as usual. Who needs a data center, if they know how to sail a boat? What data will they provide? bah.gifsick.gif

Try using a calculator more, but I also can't see how this is going to help much and could have been better spent. Still. What can you do with only just under a 100 thou US$ and the website could be useful.

  9. They need to take a very serious look, at the unbelievably high charges for work, parts and maintenance, that most boat owners are forced to pay in Phuket. Having said that, I must say that in general, the work done is usually of quite high quality. I have seen first hand what the Thais can do with wood and they are masters at their trade. All of us that own a yacht, know that they are a "hole in the water" for money by nature anyway, but that does not excuse the exorbitant costs charged in Phuket by Thai businesses - mostly with no comeback for any faults, that most yachtsman have no option but to pay. The people who own superyachts that can afford these charges, only represent 10 or 15% of the boats there. I own and have moored my 50 footer down there for 5 years, so I know what it's like. Maintaining it would have been impossible for me, had I not been charged "Thai prices" and had help from a few good friends down there. Another thing that really needs to be solved and sorted out, which I feel would help the industry along, is the law that prevents any foreign owned boat not Thai registered(taxes paid) from being sold in Thailand. Have to sail to Malaysia or elsewhere to make a legal sale. All of us who own boats down there, know that the industry is very depressed and has been for a couple of years. Hope this new data center can help boost things along.

  10. Thailand has good laws in place - just not always followed.....having said that, under Thai law, police or any other legitimate party, must have a warrant to tap your phone, land or mobile(also sms even more difficult to get a warrant for and must go to the service provider). If no warrant was issued, nothing can be used in a court of law against the person. I know from personal experience, that selected and creatively(by police) used bits from a phone tap was used to form a case, that was thrown out by the Thai Judge. Unfortunately, no disciplinary action was taken against the BIB. They just got a smack on the hand. This law has been followed since 3 years or so ago and has been upheld in all cases. That is not to say that your phone wont be tapped to get them going or provide more leads. By far the best way here(or anywhere), is to have nothing to hide and don't break the law. The BIB aren't going to keep tapping your ipod, just to listen to the lies you just gave your wife about being alone etc. and what you are going to do to your "Mia Noi" next time you meet. Even they have a budget after all.....

  11. Hello!

what whould happen, when someone, short before the visa is runing out and the person have to go to hospital?

same then normal overstaying,or how then will be the diffrence in the visa law?

who have the be informed first?

when it should not posible after a acsident or whatevver-?

is a blacklist forever,or can also be removed, after a couple of years?

on internet i read some reports, that planing in the future,a visa for all countrys, like here in eu!

You can get an extension of stay, based on a certified letter from a hospital or doctor, giving medical reasons why you can't travel etc. I think it was 60 or 90 days. Same goes if you have to appear in court for any reason, outside the time on your visa. I have not done this myself, but an acquaintance at BKK immigration told me of it. He did say that one should first sort it out at the office where you live, before leaving. A young Brit teacher I met at the court house last year, was doing 3 months community work for use and possession of a couple of joints. His passport was held until he completed the service, then he was free to do a re-entry and work again. No blacklisting. He had a paper from the court to show immigration. I think he was very lucky, but my point is valid.

  12. Just a comment on the marriage side of things. My wife and I got married in a church in Sukumvit Soi 2. I got a paper from my embassy stating that I was single. 2 hours(small fee). Translation into Thai, 1 hour and 300 baht. Girlfriend had a paper from the "Nai Aphur" where she was born saying she was single, just in case it was needed - it wasn't. Ceremony and signing, getting the marriage certificate in Thai & Eng - free but were asked for a small donation(actual paperwork) at church about another 2 hours not including the reception and so on which you could forgo if you wish. Next day after my head recovered, went to embassy and registered the marriage. No cost. Same day, wife went to the local amphur office and for 5 or 6 hundred baht incl new Thai ID card(price will have gone up now) changed her surname for mine(Not saying this is what you should do) as when she got a passport she and I will have same surname, making it easier(immigration see Mrs Brown, not some tongue twisting Thai name) to apply for visas. It also conveys stability, commitment and not just convenience. It isn't a big drama and should help any visa app to go to any country, not just the uk. Finally, though I have no intention of doing this now or in the future, a divorce here is just as easy to get. We never used a Lawyer at all, nor did we bribe anyone. Not necessary. Helps if you speak Thai and speak well of your wife's family, which shows this is not a 10 min wonder......

  13. Any explosion for any reason of any man made devise is intent to murder.

So mining activity, demolition work, quarrying, military exercises and the like where explosive devices are routinely used are intent to murder are they?

I think the comment was meant in context of this topic. But even some of what you wrote, like the army practicing to blow up things or people, is still murder if you are on the other side. War is just "sanctioned murder" but the families of the dead, still say he was killed or murdered by so and so. Keep on topic. The other poster was just expressing their point of view - if not so clearly for some.....I certainly agree that any explosive (not including fireworks) used in a public place, that is not intended for demolition or such legal purposes, or by other than an authorized person, is a murder device.

  14. Got Intel SSD's at Jet (Corner store) in Fortune. No manufacturer has managed to compete with the Intel's in Random reads/writes. Overall the Intel's seem snappier to me I am guessing as an OS depends more on Random Reads/Writes than sequential.

Not true anymore, the OWC Mercury Extreme is the current king of the hill, with a price tag to match

    http://eshop.macsale...e_SSD_Sandforce

It shows absolutely zero performance degradation over time, probably thanks to its 20% buffer reserved for performance optimization. Which also makes it more expensive than other drives. But if I were to buy a new one, that would be the one I'd get.

I have an Intel X-25M in my MacBook Pro. And yes there's no going back. Everything is instant with this drive. My MacBook Pro feels way faster than an 8-core Mac Pro desktop. I replaced my optical drive with an 80GB SSD for system and apps, and my work, and kept a 500GB HD for cheap large storage in the HD bay. Now, 80GB is a little small, I'd go for 160+ next time around. I don't think you need to research a lot about HD vs SSD - the difference is obvious, and HUGE.

The only problem with many SSD designs is that they get slower as they fill up and/or as they get older. The above mentioned SSD solves that problem for good, and I imagine future designs will as well. I just would stay away from an unknown SSD unless and until there is a comprehensive time-performance test out there. In one time-trial test I read, some SSDs started out with 200MB/s transfer rates on random read, but degraded to less than 1MB/s within a few complete write cycles. So you'd end up with a SSD that's not much faster than a HD.

My opinion on "tuning" performance for your drives - a waste of time. If I need to tune my drive, it doesn't work properly. The drive should be a black box that works without me having to do anything special. The Mercury Extreme Pro proves that that's possible.

Think I will wait for the price to come down. Awesome drive though. Thanks for the info.

  15. Hi all. There is a lot of talk from retailers and such, about these high performance solid state disks. Just thought I would put in a link to a "white paper" published by Texas memory systems, which details these performance gains. It is in PDF format. Will also add a link for a "performance tuning" paper from them as well. I found them to be good reading and they helped me understand many of the issues and variables associated with these SSDs

    .

    solid state drive performance

    tuning solid state drives

One could argue that this is advertising hype from a company trying to sell a product, but I have read papers published by other sources and manufacturers on this subject and found their (Texas memory systems) claims and statistics to be supported by comparison with that other data. I hope this post helps a few of you out there, who are trying to make a decision on whether or not to fork out the big money and buy one of these SSDs. My Windows performance index is only 5.8, as it uses the lowest rating, which in my case is my hard drives. When I first installed Win 7 x64 Ultmt, I got a score of 6.5, but as I filled up my 1 TB of internal drives, the rating and of course the performance dropped. All my other scores are 7.2 and 7.3. I am now running some Autodesk 2011 stuff, for which you really need a "top of the line" high performance Desktop, to get the full benefits. The drop in performance is really hurting me. I read these papers to help me make an informed decision, on what best to buy. Hope my rambling post helps you. thebom

  16. Not come across that one yet......but try booting up with just the SSD. If recognized, format it then hook up the rest. Good luck.It should run, as ya gear is new enough. I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-Extreme MB and that saw the SSD after a bios update.....I too am running Win 7 x64 Ultimate.

  17. I have Win 7 Ultimate x64. I run x32 bit games that are 3 years old with no probs. Win 7 x64 does allow x32 bit stuff to run as well, with no tuning from me. Just try it. Some stuff wont run I am told, but all the many x32 bit graphics/games from my old OS are running OK.

  18. If he was "detained" where did he got the blade....anyway that is not important, what is, is to give him the singapore own medicine...' death penalty '

As long as there is demand, there will be supply. As the man said, he was going to sell to tourists in Thailand. No matter how harsh the penalties, even

the death penalty, it will never stop some people from trying to make some money. Prohibition doesn't work, it only fuels criminality, the "war on drugs" can

    never be won...

Luckily, the British did not think that way in WWII.

Defeatism must give you a miserable life.

With the right mental attitude and the right laws in place, of course the narcotic trade can be eliminated. One just needs to have the will and determination to go through with the necessary measures.

Realism. Not Defeatism. Look what prohibition did in the US. Demand creates supply, along with the profits from whatever. When Gvmnts work out how to make a profit out of the "drugs trade" and the demand is high enough, it will happen. I am not for harmful drugs, but I am a realist - with a lot of cynicism thrown in.The use of "illegal narcotics" goes right through every level of our society.

  19. <snip> an excuse to continue with the pointless and oppressive state of emergency that is keeping other political parties down.

You find the State of Emergency oppressive? How So?

I've lived in Central Bangkok through out the whole episode, i have not found my daily life to be even slightly affected by the State Of Emergency.

Like you Wolfie, I have not seen any change to my life because of this decree. I have lived in Bangkok area for years. Extra security is only bad for those who are doing wrong......

  20. It's to bad, most Farangs just sit back, do nothing, but watch and talk the talk, (Bitch) The Pollution Solution Group sees this daily on Jomtien Beach, now and again (seldom) a Farang will reach out and help in the removing dangers from the beach, (Bless them) most just sidestep the dangers, doing their exercise, thinking only about themselves, caring less about Earth, or sit back and look on, one would think that their upbringing would have taught them differently. When people were growing up, back in the 40's and 50's, we were taught to clean up where we lived and vacationed, clean up when arrived and when we were leaving, we called it "Leaving only footprints behind" Today most people are lazy, give nothing back to Mother Nature, to make it safe for the voiceless to follow, children, wildlife and waterways, most say, not my mess, a Thai did it, it was here when we got here, I'm to proud to pick up after others.

We find more Thai people, reach out to help, or we ask and many join in.

Most people today are uncaring and don't care what dangers are left behind, that a unknowing child could ingest become ill or die, killing wildlife, contaminating our water, most just think that someone else will take care, or they are to above it, to pick up the dangers left by others, being a human of late is nothing to be proud of.

We all need to look around and see things that need to be done and do what we can, like a little Waster-Sizing, bending at the waist to pick up some waste, one random act of kindness at a time, get with the program Farangs.

It is a very interested view. In my opinion Farangs are cleaning up their mess in great numbers. The Thai Hotel Federation though, should call for tough sanctions against their members who are too lazy and too inconsiderate to demand that their members clean their waste water and demand that the restaurants boats and other boats catering for tourists and Thai businesses alike do not throw waste overboard. Problem is that not the visitors to Thailand are sitting back and do nothing but the Thai people themselves. Ever visited a National park after a holiday or a Waterfall? Ever seen a Thai cleaning up after Songkran or New Year? Ever heard about a teacher demanding that their pupils throw paper in the baskets? No? Precisely nobody has heard, and if we hear it is the exception on the rule. One cannot expect more anyhow. GOvernments who plan dirty industries in Mataput which was a great place before and do not even enforce their own (military imposed) rules on pollution cannot ask from their citizens to clean up. newin's party gets all the help from the Democrat Party to destroy teak trees in Khao Yai the road must be build. Sanan is pushing for another dam that will destroy another ecosystem. The problem lays with the seldom tax paying rich who make the rules and who break the rules. Surely not by tourists paying a lot of money and who may expect that hotels and other busiensses will dispose their waste in an environmentally friendly matter.

    Well said and very understandable.

But sitting back and expecting it to be taken care of, and knowing it's not, would leave me to believe that, if we are going to live here, we should have an invested interest in doing what we can, to educate, change and set examples, one should know, when the going gets tough, the tough get going, The Pollution Solution Group, most of the time is a party of one, and is making a small difference, I can't imagine 10, 20, 30, people Farang and Thai, doing the same thing! I'm quite sure there would be more changes made much sooner, then just one old Farang doing one day and one beach at a time.

People hear what we say, but see what we do and seeing is believing, we can't just wish changes, we need to walk the walk and if we do it right, in our time, changes will happen, sooner then later, and for those of us that have children, we can praise ourselves for bringing a change for the better and their future, if there is one.

And we don't need a WORK PERMIT to set examples, educate and clean up places, stencil storm drains in Thai and English, pick up trash where you see it, after awhile people start to learn.(Yes it takes time) (No it's not easy) (Rewards are slow) (Never promised a rose garden) (End results, We get get what we give) (A learning curve for all) (Be the teacher) (Not a bitch-er) Mahalo Nui Loa...:D

Wish more people thought like you. If we all did just a bit even, it would make a difference. As you rightly say, set a good example and in time it will make a difference. Where I live, I have been telling the local shops not to use so many plastic bags(7 years). Now many of them ask me and the Thais if you want a bag, instead of putting just a couple of things in 2x bags. We can make a difference for sure - just slowly.
