I was driving northbound on Maejo Road in Chiang Mai when I saw guy fly off motorbike in southbound lane. I know people say to keep driving but I could not live with myself if I did, and plus I did not know if anyone would stop to help. I am no doctor but I am retired from law enforcement and have witnessed many injuries, Also have certification in first aid from red cross so I thought at least maybe I could help until ambulance arrived. Other people did stop to help and also people came out from factory nearby. Victim was young male, teens or early twenties. he was wearing helmet but it fell off on impact. He had blood coming from his nose and forehead. His knees and hands were scraped up, and he was semi-conscious. it was very hot and could not find something to cover him, but put shoulder bag behind his head. He tried to raise up but I told him to lie still. Luckily there was Thai man on scene with walkie-talkie and he called ambulance. Two nurses showed up, and both of them did nothing except wave smelling salts under victims nose. They did nothing to check his pulse, injuries or anything. What was worrisome to me was he never moved his legs at all, and when I asked him if he could feel anything when I pushed his legs, he did not answer, but perhaps he could feel and was just in shock or something. Ambulance showed up and as this is busy highway cars kept coming. I flashed my retired police badge and stopped traffic so ambulance could get to victim, but was not sure people would not just run me down. Anyway they didnt and the ambulance left. I hope the guy is okay. I never did see what caused accident.
One bad point of this episode to me is how poorly trained these nurses seemed to be. It does not make one feel very confident of what will happen if one has an accident. I am glad I stopped, even though i did not really do anything. Not surprisingly, no one said thank you or anything at all, but I am just glad I did not get charged with causing the accident.

I did ask about home visit but is not feasible as they all live long distance from my house and some do not even have transportation. Sad thing about this, I have learned since first posting, is that the main reason for closing is that the masseuses there will not do the extras or "happy ending", and Marisa does not allow it either. This policy she says has caused them to lose several customers. I am not real surprised by this really, but it is too bad that it is apparently difficult to make a living in massage business and maintain moral standards. I am not looking down on anyone who does the extras. I do not blame them or judge them. However it is unfortunate that these masseuses, who are all not only nice ladies but very skilled masseuses, cannot make a living. There are many places to go for customers who want the happy ending massage. I went to maripaun to relieve my pain, not sexual frustration. There are other places to go for that.

I am sad to say my favorite massage shop, Maripaun Salon and Traditional Massage is scheduled to close end of this month. I have recommemded this shop many times on forum because they basically cured me of pain from herniated disks and torn shoulder, which I suffered from for many years. The owner says they are closing due to raising of rent for building and decline in business and also because masseuses get higher salaries than most masseuses. The good news is that they may possibly reopen in Mae Rim, perhaps at new Mae Rim Plaza, once it is completed. Although it is inconvenient , I would gladly travel there as it would be worth it to obtain relief from back pain. meanwhile I will now start looking for new massage shop, which fortunately forum has excellent list of recommendations. Anyway, best of luck to Marisa sasshe is lovely lady, as are all the masseuses at the maripaun.

Can also get army hammocks at army surplus store near Chang Puak gate.

I had a 53 pound kettlebell back in US which I loved but was too heavy to take on plane. I had idea at one time to go to blacksmith village and have one made. I hear there is one near Ban Tawai. Locksmith I know who is also blacksmith made his own back in US.

Not for nothing but I borrowed a pair of official police handcuffs from a cop here and on a bet I broke them. Now I am pretty strong, but there is no way I could have busted a pair of Smith & Wesson or Peerless cuffs, although I have heard there are people who can do it. I believe the locals get their stuff from China, as another guy stated.

As i posted many times before on forum I highly recommend Maripaun Salon and Thai traditional massage on Maejo Road. I go there regularly and has cured my herniated disk and shoulder pain. They have many couples also who come regularly for oil massage and have done so myself and it was lovely. They have 4 masseuses who are all professional and the owner Marisa does not go for any happy ending type stuff and some people even bring their kids. I think maybe half the customers are women.
Maripaun is on Maejo Road 6.5 kms from Meechok Plaza and Rimping market. Head towards Maejo University and take u-turn at 2nd traffic light from Meechok intersection. There is a Wawee coffee shop right next to salon and signs out front.
Oil massage is 250 baht per hour. Phone numbers are 0852849118 and 0848832469. It is a good idea to make an appointment. They are closed Mondays.

Being an American Indian, I naturally love canoeing also and looked for one here and so far only place I find that makes them is in Phuket, which is a long way from Chiang Mai of course. In CM you can rent kayaks for 100 baht. However I did find some websites of places that sell sea kayaks, including the place in Phuket with canoes.

There is a massage school at Faham Village which sells all kinds of massage equipment. They might have what you are looking for. I know you say you prefer western massage, but as I have reported on forum on other massage threads therapeutic massage at Maripaun Salon and Thai Traditional Massage on Maejo Road virtually cured pain from both rotator cuff shoulder injury and herniated disks.

When I met my wife here I was over 240 pounds and since then wife tells me what attracted her to me was my size. Since then I have been in hospital due to high blood pressure and on doctor's orders I lost 50 pounds. Now my wife tells me she thought I was more attractive when I was heavy, even though I am still colse to 200 pounds and far from skinny. She supports my weight control program for the health reasons, but I know she prefers me to be overweight. Point here is that it is an individual thing with Thai women as well as anywhere. Some prefer thin and some fat. Just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

Thanks for replies. I will try your suggestions. Just ate phat krapow and so will soon see if I have recovered. I do not eat much dairy stuff but also no yogurt so I will try some and see if it helps. I think perhaps the large quantities of tea and coffee I drink could be part of problem.

I really love spicy food and have eaten all my life with very little problems. However, I have lately been eating a lot of chilis and other spicy stuff and have had upset stomach and diarrhea off and on for a few days now. I have tried to lay off spicy food somewhat for past day but still have problems. Could it be that I have lost my tolerance for spicy stuff. If you quit spicy food for awhile do you get back this tolerance. It is also possible that the problem is something else like vegetables washed in bad water or something else I ate. Has anyone else had this experiece? Thank you.

Whoever said Americans cannot take care of themselves has not been to Europe lately. If you do not want boiling water to overflow do not fill the pot up near the top. That is the first lesson for today. Tomorrow we will cover addition and subtraction and the alphabet.

Are you starving to death? Can you leave the country if you want? Yes, because this is not North Korea. Thailand is not most democratic country on earth, but no way can anyone rationally compare it to North Korea.

It is not true that you cannot get job here. I have almost same background as you and was offered jobs at two separate law firms in Bangkok. However I did not take position as it meant I would lose retirement pension, so be advised if you are on retirement pension, as is probably the case, you cannot legally work here. However you could get work permit if you do not want retirement pension. One thing you need to do though is learn Thai language. If you wish names of law firms I mentioned send me PM and I will give you the information. As for tourist police volunteer, you do not need work permit but it is of course unpaid position and is not really police work, at least not in Chiang Mai. In Pattaya perhaps it is different somewhat, but I would not get involved with this personally, but that is my own opinion and nothing against anyone who does.

Same to you and Merry Christmas to all on forum and everywhere.

No matter which type of cobra it was he should have had time to get to hospital and receive anti-venin in Pattaya. Cobra venom is fast acting but not that fast. Very few people in thailand die from snakebite these days. It does seem likely guy was probably drunk when he got bit. If he really was planning to let snake loose to bite people, then this is very much like a terrorist who blows himself up making a bomb. However i do not know if this was the case. At the very least the guy had very poor judgment.

I think curse note is good idea. where i used to live someone cup tearing up my plants and flowers, for some reason. I figured it was woman next door, because she seemed very unfriendly. But could not prove it. I made like a scarecrow thing in front yard with bamboo sticks, clothes and hats and candles and other crap. Then when moon came out I danced around the thing with a big knife yelling some jibberish., As i am an American indian, which people here think is strange anyway, this worked very well. I told neighbors I was Indian medicine man and I was calling up Spirit of The Forest to go after whoever was killing the plants. next day lady next door shows up with big plate of food. she has been friendly ever since and no one ever bothered plants again. however there is also a down side to this as ever since that day the Thai neighbors look at me funny and my wife is nervous that spirit really showed up and lives in the house, even though I told her it was all an act I made up and never even heard of this spirit.

Thank you for the many intelligent and rational answers. I think you have solved problem as wife is happy with these suggestions, such as the tree and chimes and mirrors and also about the philosophy regarding the whole issue. I agree perhaps court would not enforce rermoving spirit house but as other member states I did sign agreement to not put up house so I should honor it. In all other areas landlord has been very agreeable and fair. Although I really do not understand his religious beliefs fact is it is his house until paid off so I will have to work with it. I understand wife as I am native American and understand belief in spirits and such, so I respect her wishes but it seems all parties are satisfied and thank you very much.

Perhaps moveable house is the answer. Landlord says he does not want spirit house because if he takes house back Thai people will not move house as it is bad luck. However I read that house can be moved if it is relocated to wat or placed under banyan tree. I do not understand this in a way because this muban is almost entirely Thai Buddhist people so it is unlikely any future buyers would be Christian. Apparently landlord has belief like the Jewish people mentioned in previous posting that spirit house will bring bad luck or anger God or something. I am not such a religious person , but I am Christian and I think perhaps God is more tolerant than many of his followers. All I know is this whole business seems to be an aggravating and unneccessary complication.

Thank you for advice. many good ideas and am not sure yet which one to follow. Problem is although I think perhaps legally could still build spirit house, seller has been very cordial and agreeable about payments and other issues so I do not want to create bad feelings. However I think perhaps if I agree to remove house in case of default, he would be agreeable to this.

Some people on forum obviously have no idea what the U.S. Dept. of State does. It is just an opportunity to bash the USA. But I dare anyone to come on forum and tell how their country, whatever it is, has done more for the world or has not done anything wrong. I am sure there will be silence about this as the fact is with all its faults and mistakes there is no country better. And Russia is worse than US in every way imaginable.

I know this is not really about Buddhism, but I thought someone here could help. I bought house from farang and his Thai wife. Naturally it is really in his wife's name and now my wife's, but you know how it goes. Anyway I agreed to pay every month until house is paid up, and signed contract. In contract it says that no spirit house can be built on property until it is fully paid off, which is in 14 years. While this is nothing to me, of course my wife is somewhat confused and upset about this. Landlord will not allow spirit house because if he has to reclaim house, he wdoes not want spirit house as it is against his own religious beliefs. His wife is also Christian. My question is , is there some way to keep spirits out of house without spirit house, according to the Tahi customs and beliefs.

I support extrajudicial executions and target killings, in certain cases. Actually whoever did these particular ones, if I meet them, I will buy them a beer.

Thank you for kind words. About neck injury, I think problem here is I did not explain fully. Victim was raising his own head off ground, so I put bag behind his head. I did not raise up his head myself, as I know this is bad practice.
