  1. Reread my post and you will see I had the computer assisted surgery done which brought the alignment of my prostetic to almost perfect, my leg length also a match to my other leg too. The traditional surgery is cheaper because they use a mechanical frame to line up the cuts to the bones and the placement of the new joint. A one or two degree misalignment can bring a lot of discomfort to the recipient.

  2. Yes. The battery was disconnected before I left. Wasn't preparing for a flood but just trying to protect the battery life. Should the CDI be OK? Wiring OK?

Empty fuel tank, drain oil & float bowls, change filters, inspect spark plugs and squirt a few shots of engine oil through the spark plug holes. Now the important thing. Buy a few cans of WD40 and electrical contact cleaner. Go over every electrical connection and component with WD40 first then electrical contact cleaner on the plug connectors. If your alternator is accessable, spray WD40 inside until it starts pouring out. Bring some tubes of dielectric grease back with you and coat all the electrical contact surfaces before you plug them back together. Spray contact cleaner in the key holes then follow with dry graphite after the spray dries. I doubt the wheel bearings have gotten contaminated so that should be good. Clean the chain with WD40 then coat with chain lube or 90W gear oil.
  3. Thanks Smokie. Now that you mentioned this, Dr Sudtee did mention something about blood drainage after surgery. I mentioned to him that the wife and I have same blood type and if he thinkgs she will need a transfusion during/after surgery, I would donate my blood ahead of schedule. Wife is having second thoughts about undergoing surgery - she's 65 and doesn't want to "go" yet.

From the sounds of things her leg being in constant pain the op will be worth the risk. I would say if she delays her general health will worsen due to the disability caused by the knee.

Better to have it done soon and reap the benefits!

An injection in the hand....one in the back and bring an ipod to listen to for an hour or so and the op will be done.

About 340,000 Baht for a one hour operation? I thought we were talking about Thailand not America.

A year before my TKR I had a visit with an ortho at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. The hospital quoted $30,000 and that was discounted because I was going to pay cash. It's still a bargain in LOS.
  4. Thumbs up. Its time for companies to take a stand against unions.

It is unbelievable how unions threaten to strike whenever they want to negotiate higher wages.

Only wished the U.S. auto makers took this route instead of having billions of dollars bailing them out.

The auto companies have already paid the money back and now they are selling more cars than their competitors.
  5. I had a TKR done three years ago and have had zero problems since. Recovery was uneventful with little discomfort. I did, however, have it done in BKK. The reason being the doctors and hospitals here did not do computer assisted TKR surgery and Vejthani Hospital in BKK does. Further, Dr. Sundee who is highly regarded here in CNX put me onto Dr. Chumroonkiat at Vejthani. Total price out the door was around 340,000 baht.

Are they good for life time. I had heard years ago only 15 years.

But I am sure science has marched on sense then.

I was told the same. Take care of it and it should be good for 20 years. Run on it and get maybe 10.

  7. Don't expect to find anyone up here as there's no market for all the hassle one goes through. You may get lucky making the rounds with speciality car dealers in BKK. If you're looking to bring in a used car I think you can pretty much forget it unless you're Thai and you've lived abroad long enough to own the car for more than a year and a half. This same import ban applies to used motorcycles too. I know, been there done that.

  8. It might be written in Thai, or show a number refferring to the police order: Like "2.22" for a retiree.

I also use the Chiang Mai Immigration office for my one year extensions based on retirement. My last two extensions (2009 &2010) have written 2.22 after a stamp containing a string of numbers mixed in with Thai script abbreviations. The number string is คำส้ง ตร.ที่ 777/2551 ลง 25 พ.ย. 51 ข้อ 2.22. I hope this helps.
  9. These pics taken at Mae Ngat Dam a few weeks ago. I can't imagine the dam manager letting water out needlessly when it's no where close to being full.

As I understood the dam is not build to get full with water, the walls cannot take the water pressure, so they could release water even if not full.

If you look at the 2nd photo, the water level is well below the spillway. The first photo shows water level gauges, indicating the water can reach a lot higher.

This is my understanding also. The reservoir has been much higher more often than not. Besides the water stains on the gauges painted on the wall and the posts stuck in the ground, there's the tree line around the reservoir ending quite a ways above the present level.
  10. They're also open for lunch time. I got there around 2pm when i went.

Right. I should have mentioned it. They are closed from 2:00 - 5:00. I don't recall the AM opening time posted on the door. They also provide free wi-fi.

    11am-2pm lunch....then.....5pm-10pm

i found it on one of their facebook pictures.

Bella Hours for lunch and dinner

oh and its 60 baht for small Heineken and 100 baht for large Heineken.

7-11 cost 72 baht for a large bottle, so fairly reasonable.

We went to Bella Pizza last night and enjoyed every bite of their pizza. Same owners as Mr. Chan, Miss Pauline but their crust is different this time. I liked their previous recipe but like this even more. The toppings were fresh, we had shrimp and clam with ham and whatever else. Good stuff. Be aware I eat Duke's as well as Coach's pizza which is more American style but find Bella tasty but not too heavy.

  11. How many of you folks actually voted (or were even qualified to vote ) in the last election?

Huh? Why is that a relevant question on an EXPAT forum?

It's as relevant as expat Englanders pissing and moaning about the 'Immigrant problem' in the country that they left 10 years ago.

If you don't have the vote your opinion is <deleted>.

Unfortunately we do feel the effects of government changes. Populist programs, as Yingluck has promised, will bring even higher inflation. I know this will hit my pocketbook. Minimum wage increases, guaranteed salary for college grads, raising the guaranteed price for rice to the sellers (I didn't say farmers) to a level higher than the world market price are just a couple of examples. I never heard either party come up with a program(s) that will enhance future investment by foreign investors and bring money and jobs to Thailand.

  12. Does the bike have a plate? Is there a current registration sticker with the bike? Is the seller private or is the bike with a shop? The registration book needs to be with the bike, period. The person who's name is in the book must be present to transfer the registration, or that person (owner) must fill out all necessary documents and include a copy of his ID card and possibly a copy of his house book to accompany the registration book to the Land Transportation Dept. You will need what has been listed by previous posters for yourself before the LTD will allow the transfer.

  13. There's paving going on at the intersection south of San Pa Tong but everything else is complete. I say that but the bridge over the Ping is still blocked with concrete barriers. No doubt someone wasn't paid for their efforts yet. If you have a motorcycle you can slip between the barriers but a cager won't make it.

  14. Took a ride to Mae Ngat today, 4 August. The water level in the reservoir is so low there's no way they could release water down their spillway. I'm guessing the level would have to rise at least another meter for water to even reach the concrete apron of the spillway. We then rode over the the Mae Taeng water project and witnessed a lot of water flowing over their spillway which leads to the Ping. The project diverts water down the canal that runs parallel to Canal Rd. here in Chiang Mai. It was flowing in a very controlled way through the gates. Has anyone been over to the Mae Kuang dam recently?

  15. One of my Thai friends has told me that they are going to open Mae Ngat dam tonight as the reservoir is full. That could make it interesting in town. All second hand hearsay of course.

There's no way Mae Ngat is full. Been there quite recently and the water isn't even up to the spillway concrete.
  16. There are two shoe repair guys in the small Soi`s directly in behind Worowot Market - city side, I have used them on a number of occasions for 100% success, fast & cheap

Can you be more specific for the directionally challenged like me? Lots of little sois behind the market.
