  1. Currently I have an O-A and we live here in Chiang Mai. It is up for renewal next month and I am traveling to the US. My thought was to get a non-O (correction, not a tourist visa) and then apply for the 1 year extension based on marriage. As my overall savings work better for me outside of Thailand it would help to only need the 400k baht in the bank versus the O-A 800k. I actually only travel once or twice locally outside of Thailand per year. I haven't been back to the states in two years.

You either apply for a tourist visa or for a non-O visa based on marriage. The last one is the best, as you wont have to convert anything and can apply for either an extension of stay for 1 year based on marriage or on retirement. As you are talking about renewing it again, are currently on an extension of stay based on retirement or do you travel to the US to get a new O-A visa every time?

    ........

you permisison to stay for 90 days, with an extension of stay from immirgation you can stay for 1 year and extend again each year after that.

Posters correct me if I'm wrong but can't the OP request another O-A based on retirement while he's home? That would allow him to keep his money in his home country.

  2. With an extension based on retirement you only need bring the required financial documents to Immigration once each year. With an extension based on marriage you may have a visit or two from Immigration to you home, provide photos of your marriage and even have your neighbors interviewed regarding the authenticity of your marriage. To me this is more an invasion of your privacy than simply copies of your bank book and other documents. Also, God forbid, if your wife dies suddenly you only have a few days before your extension is null and void. Who in the world would be thinking of that when you are grief stricken with so much else to take care of. Extensions based on retirement IMHO is the only way to go.

  3. Today I went to Virihaya Insurance company in Pattaya.

I was told that they do not accept motorbikes bigger as 150cc and that they only to the first year full-insurance on the less as 150cc bikes.

So tomorrow I will make a search for other companies that have a office in Pattaya, and I mean insurance companies not brokers.

    Chang Noi.

This is all very interesting. I've had Viriyah for years and they've always renewed my policies for all my big bikes without a problem. I don't carry coverage for loss of my bike nor my own medical but maintain high coverage for any liability. I go to the main Chiang Mai office on the superhighway just south of the Airport Rd. flyover.

  4. I went to the Chiang Mai Bike Week and to be honest I was a bit disappointed. Admittedly, I might be a bit jaded by the events that I have been to in Australia. I was kind of expecting a bit more than half a dozen or so vendor tents and some food and beverage tents. t thought there might be a bike show of sorts, but it was more a case of going for a stroll in the car park to check out some rides. i would have thought that some of the local dealerships would have supported the event but I don't recall seeing any: no Honda, no Kawasaki, no Yamaha etc. Maybe a show like this isn't representative for their advertising. I have a feeling that I may have it all wrong and that the idea of CMBW was to show what ya brung. I certainly saw some beautifull choppers parked halfway down Loi Khro road. Some of these bikes were definitely worthy of being under the spot light with admiring onlookers. In closing I would probably think my trip down and back with my buddies was all good fun. Got to have a stroll around the night market. So perhaps CMBW was a success and achieved its intended purpose perhaps of a meet & greet tyre deal.

    cheers Garry

Hi Garry, I have a feeling you were at the North Comets event on Friday and didn't attend the party on Saturday. Fair enough, this year's party was downsized from the ones held the last two years because the big bike importers didn't feel they made any money off of the previous events. Up to them of course whether they want to come or not. CMBW is not about just one club putting on a party but all the clubs in and near Chiang Mai doing their very best to entertain our visitors. Formulate Hell kicked it off on 27 November with their party then three different parties on the 3rd. This weekend is Lampang as well as another party here in Chiang Mai sponsored by the Red & Gold Motorcycle Club. Hope to see you again next year.

  5. Classify it as ** GIFT **, Value at $25 USD & send it by a Courier that you can track it Online, Fed Ex or the like..

The Customs department has office space in all the International courier port of entry offices and the courier service is obliged to report everything that passes through their warehouse. You will be taxed not only on the value of the item but also on the cost of the shipment. As a side bar, be careful the charger for the electronic device will work on 220 volts 50 cycles.

  6. Seafoam is actually pretty good stuff. I have used it a couple of ways, in the gas and also spraying directly into the engine to de-carbonize it (look for videos of this on youtube).

I can bring some cans out next month with me if you can't find any in los.

Another thing that actually works pretty good is marvel mystery oil, mainly as an upper cylinder lube but can also really help clean up dirty engines if used in the oil. You can read alot about Seafoam and Marvel on the bobistheoilguy forums, no BS there, stuff actually works in certain applications.

Don't plan on bring them on a flight into Thailand as flammable products are not allowed on commercial flights.

  7. Anything less than a 250cc would be dangerous in my opinion. Traffic can be heavy over the pass to Lampang. Not quite so much traffic to Den Chai but mountain roads most of the way. From Den Chai to Uttaradit a lot of traffic and mountain roads plus road construction. South of Uttaradit I suggest cutting across to Chat Trakan-Dan Sai-Loei. Spend the night in Loei. That's about 470 kilometers in one day. Loei-Wang Saphung-Udon Thani-Nong Khai over 250 kilometers. I and others I ride with have done a similar ride numerous times and we can tell you from experience you need a good handling bike with good brakes and reasonable power.

  8. You can't get to Immigration that early because you have to have a letter from your bank stating that you have the required "reddies" in the account the day you apply.

.....or am I wrong about that :ermm:

I renewed on the 19th and they accepted the letter from the day before.

  9. Well, not just Thailand has a double standard for parks and recreation. At the Indiana Dunes State Park on the shores of Lake Michigan I was charged double because I didn't have an Indiana driver's license. I used to live in Northwest Indiana and never knew they charged double for "foreigners".

  10. Its my 4th day here. Been to most Karoko clubs, discos and clubs only one stands out other than the inflated prices of Bubbles & Spicy ----->Go to Bossy disco at Chaing Mai Land on Chang Klan road.... superb chicks more frequented by Thai cuties.

Nice pick up joint too. Saw one group of 3 farangs and they seem to had hel_l of a time cuddling cuties all night. Its along the Shangri-la hotel after the 2nd 7-11 turn right and walk straight .

As mentioned above, plenty of cuties that ARE NOT university students. The LAST thing a uni student wants to be seen with is an old farang. Young guys visiting their parents here in CNX are an exception but you'll seldom see them outside of a group. JMHO, chances are better in places like Khon Kaen to find students willing to be with a farang.

  11. Red Baron are one of the more reputable dealers around Bangkok. I'm pretty sure that everything they do is legal when it comes to selling 2nd hand bikes. (or new imports even)

Good that is what I have been told about Red Baron. I guess that I just need to stop reading so many post about bikes registrations and the awful new emissions testing that big bikes can't pass.

Hard to tell by your post if Red Baron has gone ahead and registered the bike already. Can you clarify? This is a new bike, probably a Honda Fury. Right? The bike must be able to pass Euro emission minimum standards which is stricter than California, USA. Normally a registered importer will have received permission to bring in specific models that the Thai government has been shown pass the emission standards before they can bring any in. Is Red Baron going to be the importer for Honda? If all goes well, the bike will be registered in Bangkok then you will have to transfer the book to Udon yourself.

  12. Last time I went, you could park for free in the service station across the street.

Make sure you get the old recipe and enjoy!

where is the sals kitchen located?

    rick

Salsa Kitchen is located west of Kad Suan Kaew (Central) on Huai Kaeo Rd. opposite the Shell gas station.

  13. We too went on the opening night. I think the mainstay of Coach's menu are the ribs but to be honest, given the pricing, I would look for a bit lot more in the way of ambience - it felt like a carry out with a few tables set up as a convenience. Drinks in paper cups and food in a plastic basket is not on for that kind of money here in Thailand. I expect they'll do OK with delivery orders in World Club Land but for ribs and pizza there are better choices.

I'm a pork ribs fan and after the Filmore East closed I've been searching for good ribs. Where do you go?

Salsa Kitchen's "original recipe" (classic?) ribs are beloved by many.

Wow, thanks Ulysses G, I forgot about Salsa Kitchen after they moved. Guess I'll have to swing by. Parking on the sidewalk, right?

  15. Is this the ring road where you make a right turn after Big C?

No, carry on further down the Hangdong Road (heading south) to the next set of lights and turn right (signposted Night Safari right at this junction). Just head up there looking right and you will see it.

I ate there a few weeks ago when it first opened and it was alright, but not amazing. To me it was strange that you enter a sort of "shop" part where you place your order and then go and take a seat and wait for your food to be delivered. Maybe this is an American thing; not something I have ever experienced before. It felt a bit like I was ordering a takeaway, but the prices are definitely full sit down meal prices. I'm not really complaining - as I said, it was okay, but we haven't rushed back. They don't sell beer either!

Is it somehow connected to Grace school and the World Club Missionary Clan (no beer...)? I guess it is positioned to target the large World Club American community and certainly all of the customers when I was there were American. The pricing also made me think it must be trageted at missionaries - plenty of free cash to spend :whistling:

I asked the same question last night because the old Ridgley's had plenty of beer and made a really strong margarita too. I was told that the beer would be coming soon and if a customer wanted to bring their own in the meantime there would not be a corkage charge. The owner is an athletic teacher/coach and used to be at the school behind Ridgley's. I don't think Grace has anything to do with the new place. My thoughts were they need more lighting in and around the restaurant. We came after dark and since there wasn't a sign above the door I wasn't sure it was the right place. It seemed gloomy. The sign out front is bright enough though. When I compared the quantity of toppings on my pie last night it seemed to be much more than their nearest two competitors provide.

  16. I found out the other day that Coach's Pizza, which has been open for about two months, is the old Ridgley's. Their menu is abbreviated from the original, but they still have pizza, BBQ ribs & chicken as well as salads and sandwiches. Was there tonight and took home a 14" pie and an order of ribs. Still the same quality as they had in San Sai. Their new location is on the north side of the road to Night Safari, between the Chiang Mai-Hang Dong Rd. and the Canal Rd. They have many tables on the premises to enjoy your meal as well as take away. They are open every day except Sunday from 11 AM until 8 PM week days and 9 PM Friday & Saturday. I, like many others, were sorry to see them close a couple of years ago. They ran a clean establishment. Nice to have them back.

  17. Check out the want ads at GT Rider. You may have to come to Chiang Mai to get the bike but you may get lucky. Funny thing is the '00 A/T I sold came from Phuket but I had changed the rego to Chiang Mai.

    Thanks,

But sorry don't understand what you mean as there is no specific "want" part on the GT riders forums. Can you make it more clear ?

If the rego was changed from Phuket to Chiang Mai, it should be no problem to have it changed back to phuket.

And i would be more than happy to go to Chaing Mai if the opportunity is there.

    Philippe
