  1. After spending the night together (unmarried couple) the female is entitled to ask the man to marry her - and give a dowry. If the man doesn't want to get married, the women is entitled to seek compensation ie....money

Yep, I knew about this one...it's happened to me on an endless number of occasions, I just cut the chase and agree the compensation fee before hand :)

Apparently this is true, just checked with the gf. She says it happened to her younger brother and the neigbour's daughter few years ago. The neighbour's family came and negotiate a marriage or settlement and it is bounded by law!

The other facts she says she has not heard of them before

  2. I have been reading up on some interesting facts about thailand on Richard barrow's site....there are some really fun facts but some others are downright weird. Any one to verify the ones below?

The man is entitled to sue his new wife in a court of law and get his dowry back, if it is found that the bride had had sex with another man before, and so - not a ‘virgin’ at the time of marriage.

It is illegal in Thailand, to leave your house if you are not wearing underwear

It is illegal in Thailand for men (and women of course) to go bare-chested in public. You must wear a top at all times!

  3. Well - US$69 mean as much to me as 69 baht may mean to a Thai - yet I also "recycle" my copypaper "religiously".

I think this incidence has more to do with poor judgement of an individual rather than the general attitude of the School.

i recycle religiously too. its not able the money but more saving the earth. though i agree this incident is a boo-boo

  4. You just load the card up with money (I add 3000 baht at a time). Be sure to get a receipt after loading. Then you use it for all purchases by handing it to the shop assistant and she scans the card. Again, always get a receipt after purchases.

On your receipt, you will see your points mounting up and these can be redeemed for items at a later date.

It is a very good idea, because it takes the hassle out of using cash and getting change. Plus, I give it to the Mrs, to use sometimes because no signature is required.

The sad thing is, not many people have taken it up, if they did those 7-11 queues would lessen.

what good are the points for? plastic this and that you will wish you never got in the first place. personally, unless a discount is offered on all purchases, I see no value in handing over cash to 7/11 in advance.

i agree, this store value cards type of things are a happy scam. cashless society bs. image if the interests generate on all the money collected if everyone put money in their cards.

  5. I have an airline ticketing guy that does the same for me in BKK. I just pick up the phone tell him my needs and he searches the best price for me. Just call book and either transfer the money or delivery to me with additional THB100 charge.

Anyone who wants his number can PM to me

  6. If you chopped them into half they instantly becomes 2 centipedes and still lives.

I usually feed the smallers ones to my arowanas and the bigger ones you can actually eat them which i was taught in jungle suvival but tried just that one time

I will take your word for it, but have no interest in partaking 555. :) I have a flowerhorn (red dragon) I wonder if this would be a little delicacy for him? He likes blood worms.

Small centipedes will definitely be a treat for flowerhorns.

another fact - centipedes are used by certain cultures to treat malaria.

  7. You acutally do not need a visa to enter Malaysia if you are holding a belgian passport, but the 4 months validity could pose a problem. Border immigration are not less strict imho (just crossed Changloon to Sadao 3 weeks ago and saw a few farangs being held up for visa problems)

    Bribing might work though.

Your Passport need to have at least six months validity to enter into Malaysia.

A Very Strong Word Of Advice : Do Not Bribe !!! This is Not Thailand.

You will be arrested and face a "mandatory" jail sentence plus a heavy fine.

All records of your passport when coming in will be recorded "On-Line" at all border crossings.

I repeat, bribing a civil servant is a very serious offence and the jail sentence is "mandatory" in Malaysia.

Please be aware !!! Mai mee pan ha ! Sawatdi.

Not trying to argue my case but from my experiences, malaysia is same same as thailand when it comes to 'coffee/tea' money.

Many a times, dealing with the Malaysian police or government officials, all that is needed is some greasing of the palms.

I would suggest OP tries his luck then if/when the passport is flagged, take it back and slot a $50 malaysian bill in between and requests for the officer to take another look.

I beg to differ. It is "Not The Same".

In Malaysia, the "Jail" sentence is "mandatory" . In Thailand it is not mandatory.

That means, you are playing "Black Jack" with law enforcement officers.

If the officer wants to arrest you, and if you are found guilty, then the jail sentence is mandatory.

Is it worth the risks ?

Just recently, a few Bangladeshi and Pakistani workers were sent to prisons trying to bribe police and law enforcement officers.

Still want to play "Black Jack" ? BTW, they love to target foreigners. Beware !!!

Well I have never met any government official who have yet to refuse a bribe in more than 20 years I have been working and living on and off in various parts of West Malaysia. In fact they are more 'proactive' in soliciting bribes than their thai counterparts. Any expats or malaysians can attest to this.

You are right they like to target foreigners...for some 'coffee' money that is. The Bangladeshi and Pakistani workers probably did not offer enough or could not meet the demanded bribe that was why they were sent to prison with an additional charge.

Malaysia might be slightly higher on the corruption index than Thaialnd but in this region I think perhaps only China or Indonesia comes close to malaysia

  10. As long as they rally peacefully and dont start inciting things the reds, like any other group, should be allowed to hold the demo and say what they want to. If questions are raised than Im sure if there is no substance to them those accused will have no problem rebutting them, or if outrageous fibs then court action can be taken. If one group starts asking questions it may also encourage other groups to ask. It isnt like there arent skeletons on all sides. Exposing more of the dirt would be a positive thing

Have to agree with you there.

I always wondered about a political fight happening on the basis that one side was corrupt and disloyal, and the other clean and loyal.

The odds that you can find one truly clean politician or person of power anywhere in the world let alone Thailand are pretty slim. Add in bomb detectors, national parks, and political donations and you can see that most of them are treading water on the moral high ground.

i am waiting to hear the skeletons that will be coming out, Thaksin might actually looked like a choirboy after more corruption revelations being dished out

  11. Red Shirts are going for the puppet master. Let's see how this will play out.

    Who is "the puppet master"?

    Prem.....

Don't be childish, Prem is 90 years old. He is in good health but anyone who has a 90 year old grandpa know how active someone with 90 can be.

There are a few other asian politicians who like Prem refuses to die off and still pulling the strings behind the shadows.....maybe its the preverse will to hold on to power that is keeping them alive. Examples Harry Lee and Matthatiar
  12. If you don't respect Thai men, that's OK. But you must not disrepect KhunYing Porntit. She is the most respected girl in Thailand.

Yes - i will have to agree with that

For her contributions to Thai society the King bestowed the title of Khunying, the highest honour given to a woman, on Dr Pornthip in 2003.
