  1. Hun Sen calls down curse on Thai PM over land row

    Supalak Ganjanakhundee

    09-02-2010

Border tensions died down Monday (February 8) but the war of words flared up with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen reciting a curse on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for his comments on disputed territory.

Thai security forces had been put on alert over the weekend as Hun Sen toured the border near overlapping areas including the Preah Vihear Temple.

The PM arrived in the vicinity of Ta Muen Thom Temple but did not visit the ruins.

Colonel Thanet Wongcha-um, chief of staff of the Suranaree Task Force, which oversees the area, said Thai authorities on the ground informed Hun Sen's advance team the situation was not safe due to the presence of yellow-shirt protesters.

Before leaving the area, Hun Sen presided over the inauguration of Ta Moan village in Oddar Meanchey province, some five to six kilometres away from the temple, Thanet said. Thai troops retreated after his departure, he said.

During the opening ceremony, Hun Sen launched a verbal attack on Abhisit.

Abhisit said on Sunday that Hun Sen's visit to Preah Vihear would help Thailand claim possession of the area surrounding the temple.

Hun Sen visited the temple on Saturday and accused Thai troops of invading Cambodia. Abhisit said later that day that Hun Sen's accusation meant the Cambodian leader accepted Thai ownership.

Hun Sen put a curse on Abhisit.

"If you don't tell the truth about Thai troops invading Cambodia, let magic objects break your neck, may you be shot, be hit by a car, may you be shocked by electricity or (may you be shot) by misfired guns."

"Will Abhisit swear on having all his family members killed and having them (perish) in a plane crash, if (he still claims) that Thai troops did not invade Cambodia?" Hun Sen was quoted as saying by Cambodian website Deum Ampil News.

The International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that Preah Vihear is located in territory under the sovereignty of Cambodia. Abhisit argued that the court was referring only to the stone remains but the area adjacent to the temple belongs to Thailand.

He said again Monday that Thailand would never surrender any of its territory.

Relations with Cambodia turned sour after Abhisit took power due to his stance against Cambodia over the Preah Vihear issue.

Hun Sen criticised Abhisit for supporting the yellow-shirt movement, which helped set the stage for the military coup in 2006 and seized Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2008, paving the way for Abhisit to assume power.

Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary to the foreign minister, said Thailand regretted learning about Hun Sen's harsh statement.

Such an outburst would undermine attempts to restore diplomatic relations, he said.

  2. Hi, I know the norm is you got to have at least 6 months validity on your passport before you can enter any country.

My question is - Does Thai immigration enforce this strictly, any difference if I fly in or come by overland? Has anyone tried to enter with less that 6 months and if yes, what is most likely to happen? Anyway around this rule. I hold a Singapore passport (Asean/ APEC partner), will this help in any ways?

I have tried going to other countries with less than 6 months and got different types of reception. Ever entered Indonesia with less than 2 weeks left on my passport and got thru with a 100K bribe.

  3. Nothing like a nice civil war to pave the way for democracy - half the population on one side and half on the other. Is that what you mean? In what way is that a solution to Thailand's woes?
Glad to see someone is taking a principled stand and standing up to the Military that are bullying the democracy of Thailand and its people.

But id hate to see this as another excuse for the military to prove what a bunch of mass murderous power thirsty scoundrels they.

IMHO civil war is the only chance for the oppressed Thais to be freed. Let's hope Thaksin succeed in his revolution

  5. Also Guan Yu who from what I gather is also revered in China and I guess is related in some way to Kwan Eim.

Guan Yu was a historical character, and one of the three heroes of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He later became a kind of deity symbolizing justice. Apparently, Hong Kong police stations all have a statue of him. I've seen a few in Thailand too, where he is known as Guan Oo. So no relation to Guan-im/Kwan Yin.

Guan Gong as he is more commonly known symbolizes loyalty. People on both sides of the law worships him.

The chinese deity that symbolizes justice would be Bao Gong aka Bao Ching Tian (literally translated as clear sky). He is another historical figure as well

  6. The Regin looks very good, thanks for that tip.

Be forwarned the Regin is situated in Geylang THE red light district, there are streetwalkers at the hotel's entrance.

Best value for money besides the 81 or Frangrance chain, there is the Value hotels and Aqueen hotels. Best value for money and location in town

  7. From what I saw, it looked like the Chinese were fighting Muay Thai, not kungfu, style. It looked like some of the decisions could have been hometown bias as well.

From what I could find out on other websites, these were not Shaolin monks, who were prohibited from accepting the Thai challenge and the circus atmosphere, but supposed practitioners of of Shaolin-style kungfu.

Methinks the whole thing is a bit fishy, actually.

You are right, the chinese were using a fighting technique known as Sanda or San Shou, literally meaning freehand. It is a form of chinese full contact kickboxing

  8. Hi,

I am not currently with the prices of cars in Thailand. So see if anyone can offer some advice.

A friend who is 5 months overdue on a 2 year old Toyota Fortuner/Fortuna wants me to take over the car. He paid 1.2 m for it and now there is an outstanding of 700k in instalments. How much of takeover money should i pay him (reasonable to be fair to both sides).

Also the 700k is his loan including interests. Could anyone jsut take over a car loan like that? Or would i (or rather the gf) have to take a new loan? Would there be a revaluation in this case and be peg to prevailing interests rates?

Look forward to hearing your views and many thanks in advance

  9. Some months back picked up a coin, did not looked like anything I have seen b4....took it home showed to the gf. She told me it was a 5 baht coin minted in 1977 for the King's 50 years birthday. Did some research and found out it was a limited edition piece. Some thai guy offered me 5k for it but i am not selling still

  10. I like tattoos on girls. The more the better. Especially the really wild religious ones, all over a hot girl's back.. Awesome. So they'd need to be the standard Thai traditional 'just black' ones. But elaborate designs are welcomed. Plus you got something to read and admire.

    ( I most likely woudn't marry such a person, but that wasn't the question. :) )

By "really weird religious ones" do you mean the Khmer protective tattoos (i.e. sak yant in Thai)?

The only Thai people I have ever seen with those tattoos were men. Of course Angelina Jolie has some too, but she is not Thai. Another poster mentioned that some "hi-so" Thai women have been getting them from Ajarn Noo. I have not seen this. Is it a recent trend?

There are quite a few thai lady celebs with tattoos, just do a search. Ajarn Noo's samnak has a photo gallery of local who's who who have visited him to get inked (believe there are many more whose photo is not up there)

see this for the hottest women with ink.....Thai Tera Patrick is on the list

Below is the pic of another....believe her name is Aom

  11. I had the chance to conduct military live firing exercises in Thailand years ago (tanks/motars/arty howitzers). Many a times the designated live firing areas were very close to villages or even right next to them. There were also a few instances of mis-firing that caused some damage to buildings (was told no injuries). Once we were in a remote village up in Kanchanaburi and a monk pulled me aside to show me the damage to his temple entrance that were apparently caused by our M2 machine guns!

  12. Move to Southern Thailand, convert to Islam, marry both ladies. Get the 1st wife (the one with the respectable job) to work and support the whole family. Live happily ever after.

  13. I am a Muay Thai fan and I think on most days they can floor just about anyone except for K1 MAX fighers who I see as the ultimate but we are talking about Shaolin monks here which is a different kettle of fish. Besides normal kungfu these monks practise Qi Gong, and I have seen a 70 year old Qi Gong master repel a dozen young man with just a flick of his arms, and the superman feats of letting a truck run over their torso, breaking bricks over their heads etc...Qi Gong is not martial arts per se so there is no comaprison

  14. Thanks for all the comments. Malaysian airlines is indeed do-able and much cheaper than 15K but downside there's a transit of around 2 hrs (will try that next time there is time on my hands). But its a blessing in disguise....looked around and managed to get Cathay Pacific business class at 16K! Apparently there is a promo going on now. I cannot reconcile with the fact Tiger ticket is still going at 15K and rising. There must be some scam going on indeed!

  15. I will let on more since reading the more measured replies.

I have been caught with my hands in the cookie jar more than a few times, so to speak. I am partly responsible for my current gf's paranoid behaviour as I have betray her trust many times. And the ex wife is not making things easy for me so in a way I am between a rock and a hard place.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures that is why I have concoct up such a plan. I am also doing this mainly because I need/want to see my kids so please do not judge me. The topic at hand is how can I try to pull this off and not why I am doing it.

This is looking to be more difficult than it sounds, I will do a dry run soon. I am flying in reaching BKK around 11pm at night, I plan to hang around until after midnight (smoking area? duty free shopping? toilets?) before crossing customs (do the thai immigration change the passport date stamp exactly at 12midnight?) Then I will have around around 20 hours on my hands before i return to the airport to do the switcheroo the same evening. Wish me luck!

  16. The exact details are too complicated and personal for me to share. Would it be better if I said the premise that I am doing this is to get away some away time from the gf and meet up with a new hot chick that i have just met? Please dun judge me, I am just trying to find out if my idea can work.

  17. Firstly gotta agree with the previous posters. If a GF told me I could not see my kid she'd be straight out the door, but fotunately I'm not in that position so only you can decide that.

Secondly the practical issue of what you propose. You'd have to go all the way through to the dedparture gate to be able to get airside to come back in through arrivals, IF they would escort you in that way, they might just send you out through departures the way you came in.

And then there's the security question as well and the suspicion that you may have put a b**b on the 'plane and that's why you don't want to board.

AND you'll have a departure stamp and 2 arrival stamps dated the same day so unless you're luck yand they're on separate pages or your GF is stupid then in short I personally think your idea won't work.

I think I would have to go thru immigration again if I had bought a flight out of the country. What about a domestic flight? No need to stamp my passport right? The reason for the other ticket is just like 'cover charge' to re-enter the airport restricted area and appear again. But my concern will be entering in from 'departures' and them not letting me exit in 'arrivals'. In some other smaller airports I might be able to pull this off but not sure about Swampy.

Noted on the other comments regarding the gf. Thanks
