  1. boycott Honey Bar. dont go there hopefully it goes under.

Although I live in Bangkok, and have only had the "pleasure" of driving through the seaside toilet they call Pattaya ... I must say this is a simple and brilliant idea that would not only go a far way to help solve this issue, but send a clear message to all other bar owners ... we can ... and will ... hit you where it hurts ... right in the wallet.

If the locals would go to the owner and expalain that after he

    (1) Fires the bouncer

    (2) Apologizes to the guy who almost got killed

    (3) PAYS ALL THE MEDICAL BILLS

Then, and ONLY then, will the foreigners come to dip their spoons in the honey pot.

And if a half dozen or so hovered around and explained to tourists why they should not go in ... it would not take long for him to get the message.

Surely there is no law against wearing matching tee shirts that say, "Boycott the Honey Bar for almost killing a tourist."

In point of fact, due to Thailand's arcane defamation laws, you could find yourself in quite a bit of trouble for doing just that. Bear in mind that truth is not a defense when it comes to someone suing you for such activity. All they have to prove is that you took some action that was intent on damaging their business or reputation.

I think you will find that the Thai court's willingness to accept such silliness, and the corrupt legal professions total lack of ethics when it comes to such cases, are exactly the reason that people like Andrew Drummond are telling Thailand to piss off once and for all.

That said, since i believe the precedent was set when the Spicy Girls / Champion door boys stabbed the Kuwaiti military guy recently, i would be looking for a 60 day close of Honey Bar 2 to be coming down the pipeline. Guess it depends on how connected the German (and his Thai proxy) are whether that will happen or not.

Maybe the General should consider a set of Line Stickers detailing all the common scams for the tourist to download and reference when they are here. One of the stickers could be a white guy surrounded by 6 brown guys kicking the crap out of him. Hell, it could even be animated now!

  2. If you were married in Thailand, and have absolute proof of her infidelity, meaning photos and video, then you should consider going back to Thailand (without the kid) and filing for divorce there. At the same time, you can file a civil action against the person she was having the affair with and win damages from him. Your divorce case will be much better for you in Thailand. I would be hesitant to take the child for fear that the family would kidnap and abscond with them.

  3. We lived in Abu Dhabi. I worked on the island but our house was on the mainland near Yas Island.

Quite a lot of Thais. Active Thai women's group who organized some socials with the Royal Thai Embassy. Most husbands were American, Brits, and a few Europeans. There was a Thai lady in Sharjah who ran a food business and would deliver Thai food, vegetables, ingredients etc at reasonable prices. We visited Dubai but my wife preferred Abu Dhabi which I think is quieter and more family orientated. Dubai more Western in outlook. My wife liked the shopping malls and Thai restaurants. Very high numbers of Filipinos working there. Good facilities and safe public transport. Usually very safe for families.

My wife and kids loved it there and would go back without any time.

    Wish you the best.

"There was a Thai lady in Sharjah who ran a food business and would deliver Thai food, "

I lived in Al Ain (Abu Dhabi emirate) for about 10 years. Even there, there was a Thai presence including a Thai lady who prepared Thai food for home deliveries.

I agree with Baerboxer that life in Abu Dhabi would be less hectic than in Dubai.

Depending on the conditions of the O/P's employment package and his willingness to spend a lot time in commuter traffic, he might even explore finding a place to stay in Sharjah. Accommodation is cheaper there and things are a bit less hectic. But if he is working for the government of Dubai he might be required to rent in Dubai and the drive to & fro during rush hours can be pretty bad.

Life is (or at least was some years ago) a bit more tranquil in the Jumeirah section of Dubai, but it was also rather pricey.

My employer had housing officers and other people who arranged housing and helped to sort out things like furniture, schools, car loans, freight clearance & delivery, etc ... most of it at the employer's expense or subsidized cost, so before doing too much on your own, see what human resources options are available to you.

    Thanks Suradit

I will be working in the free zone for an O&G company. I will be assisted in schooling and housing by the companies agents, pretty similar I guess to what you mention above. I will get the lay of the land, proximity to the office ect....when I do a pre visit.

As mentioned above working away alot is no issue for me, but now we all as a family have the chance to relocate and begin a new adventure my concern is my family being ok as this will be the first time they have been away from Thailand for more than a few weeks.

Any recommendations for decent housing communities?

Thanks again, any input I will take onboard.

Which Free Zone exactly? There are tons of them.

Where you end up living will, in large part, be driven by the schooling for the kids. Once you know that, then you can start to try to sort everything else.

I live in Dubai Silicon Oasis myself, mostly due to the proximity to the Bypass Road that runs from Sharjah all the way past the new airport. SInce i used to frequently work at both airports, it made sense.

Feel free to PM me and i can offer some suggestions.

  4. Came back from a flight today and, unbelievably, things have gotten even worse. Garages completely shut down and most of the roadways have cars double and triple parked. Appears the locals are now using the entranceway to the arrivals area for a carpark as well.

Taxi, bus, or dropoff is the only sensible solution.

  5. Back at the airport Monday night about 2245. Access road to the 5th floor entrances to the garages completely closed. Both the outdoor lots looked full.

I went into garage 3 and managed to find a spot in the drive lane. My guess is the same cars I blocked in will still be there in 24 hours when I get back.

I noticed that there were still loads of cars parked on the roadway between the hotel and garage.

I would not advise driving for a flight if you can avoid it. If you must, come early.

  6. No real relief as of when I left today. Still jam packed.

Really sux for me, as I pay monthly and there was no waiver of the fee for this month. So, I paid 2k for parking that is free, and can't even find a space to park in with all the freeloaders. Amazing Thailand.

Have to fly again Monday night, and am thinking I might have to pay to park in long term parking because there is no parking that i paid for in the garage. Just infuriating.

And apparently it all comes down to the current concessionaire screwing AOT out of the revenue before getting their contract terminated with the installation of the new set of AOT "directors".

  7. I went to 2 different Telewiz locations here in Pattaya today to purchase an Aircard. The AIS website shows the 7.2 card available for 1990 baht with 1 month free "unlimited" followed by 799 a month.

However, neither shop was willing to sell me that offer. Both quoted me 2290 for the same card, with 30 hours free and NO 3G!!

I was under the impression that the Telewiz shops were AIS retailers, but maybe not as they will not honor promotions on the AIS website.

However, after reading these threads I am thinking about going with TrueMove H anyway.
