  1. A German language source is far more accurate and detailed. Apparently the guy is a lawyer (boasting of 40+ clients in Thailand) and either has some money or likes to take photos of large properties (look as his Badoo friend finder page). Definitely likes to wear huge watches. A bit like a pimp in a white collar business (oh, I already said he's a lawyer) as far as the taste and presentation go. Anyway, as per Badoo he's been divorced "4 weeks ago" and "hope to meet you soon".

One of the types I'll do my best to avoid, yet fits in perfectly into Thailand.

  2. Clearly something needs to be down to alleviate the traffic problem, but some sort of unified transport card would go a long way to encouraging people to switch between the different methods- from MRT to BTS to BRT to... whatever the monorail is going to be called.

Am I the only way who hears this song in my head when they read the word monorail..?

Thank you! Not only did you save me the time, but now I know I'm not the only one who has this reflex reaction upon hearing the word "Monorail".

That Simpson episode basically ruined monorails for the rest of my life :-)

  3. Sounds like the usual all-or-nothing approach which will ultimately fail because it's not workable. I'd love to see Silom as a walking street (ie no motorized traffic) from Rama 4 to Narathiwatratchanakarindaraohmygodimsohappymystreetaddressisshort but how's that supposed to work?

Two lines of street stalls around Saladaeng have been too much, but the few food stalls had some great snacks after 7pm. Hope they can stay at their regular corners.

  4. Phuket road rage shooter will be caught soon police

Rescue workers take Mr Chaliao's body away after the shooting.

PHUKET: Police believe it will not be long before they catch the man who shot dead motorbike taxi driver Chaliao Piyapanikul at around 9:30 am today (October 30).

Phuket Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonprasit told the press this afternoon that the case was still being treated as one of road rage.

Witnesses told us that the victim use to be a boxer and was quite hot-tempered. They said that whenever he got into an argument he would start a fight.

We dont think the two men had met before. Witnesses said Mr Chaliao honked his horn continuously at the shooter, which may have raised the temperature, he explained.

They started shouting at each other until they stopped at the red light. Mr Chaliao said he was going to get the other man.

Witnesses said the other man warned Mr Chaliao many times that if he got off his bike he would be shot, but apparently he did not listen. After he got off the bike, he was shot around four times before the shooter left the scene.

I believe it will not be hard to find the gunman; Phuket police will definitely arrest him very soon, he added.

Phuket Town Police superintendent Sermphan Sirikong told The Phuket News that police have the license plate number of bike the shooter was riding but were not sure if the plates were fake or if the rider was also the owner of the bike.

Well, if all this is true, I'm wrong about the execution theory.

Yeah, me too. Looks like he messed with the wrong guy. Still surprised about the coolness of the execution, if hot temper and loss of control were responsible for the shooting.

  5. I wish newspapers would adopt a policy of writing "holy" (in inverted commas) just to emphasize that this is a completely virtual concept and not a real thing people are fighting about. It would highlight the nonsensical aspect of killing one another: a "holy" war, a "holy" site, a "holy" man. Lift that bronze age rubbish out of our day to day language and life.

Similarly all other fictional characters and devices:

    "Harry Potter"

    "witches"

    "warp drive"

    "god"

Wasn't so long ago that journalists could properly use quotation marks to highlight debatable aspects of their reports.

  6. One wrong letter makes all the difference.

Focus on Quality Tourism, then the quality tourists will follow.

And yes, you have to offer the one to receive the other.

Also, until you open a Paragon Diamond Excellence Boombastic Mall at Roi Et, high spending tourists (Middle East and Chinese moguls) will stick to Bangkok, where a dinner can cost more than two weeks in Isaan.

  7. I know this is a strange one (as many cases here are), but do remember that the suspect turned himself in to police. People who are saying that this is another example of a dodgy story need to explain why the Thai man would come forward in this instance.

An earlier post mentioned that he was caught on CCTV and the local village headman recognized him and convinced him to surrender. I guess the CCTV wasn't directly at the beach but nearby and perhaps few people on it at the time.

If that's true, then coming forward is self defense, not remorse.

  8. Sorry, I forgot, this is the TVF, so the foreigner, in this case even a farang, must be the totally blameless victim of a crime by the evil Thai men and be defended at all cost.

That is nonsense, in the case of the old guy who got his arm broken by a Thai "parking attendant", a lot of the posters directly blamed the foreign victim for not paying up what turned out to be little more than extortion money.

If you like to be right, I suggest this: TVF is extremely polarized, it is always either 100% the Thai at fault (and then, generally the entire nation) or 100% the foreigner's fault (as well as the evil cousins: NEVER the Thai's fault (coincidentally this is the only correct use of "Thai's", regardless of how much disdain posters on TV have for proper plurals) or NEVER the foreigner's fault). Possibly because of calcified brain structures that only allow one or the other, but never a shade in between.

In this case, I find it hard not to at least feel pity for the person who was left comatose and bleeding in the open, by a larger group of people who apparently did not care a bit whether he would live or die there - not a single one of them, did they continue their work afterwards or did they all run? Had it been a group of tourists who beat up a Thai passerby, I would be surprised if the outcome would be different.

Well that started off a bit too aggressive, so for "That is nonsense" please read "That is not universally correct". thumbsup.gif

Also, "If you like to be right" is of course still my personal view and opinion, under no circumstances can I claim to be an expert authority on what is right all the time. rolleyes.gif

  9. So this affects hotels and guest houses, as well as private persons who have foreign visitors staying with them for commercial or social purposes.

So the vast majority of those affected are Thais in the hospitality business.

But most of the discussion here is fueled by the old "my own 90 days" anger of long term foreigners.

It only makes sense because on ThaiVisa, we comment immediately after reading half of a headline and we have the memory of a fern.

A legitimate question however would be about the "notification system". I remember (from 1996 to 2008) that the entry form has a space for the address while in Thailand and that was good for 90 days after entry. So technically, a visitor who stays less than 90 days and wrote "Banyan Tree Bangkok", "Sabai Guesthouse Pattaya" or "my buddy Mike off Sukhumvit 19" should indeed be in the notification system. Well I guess we all know how to lie, so the confirmation by the domicile owner is required as described in the 2nd para. Weird stuff.

  10. The death penalty here us an obvious attempt of the government to protect the higher up responsibles - connected businessmen and corrupt officials who devised and permitted rebuilding of the ferry to a state where it was no longer seaworthy, for the sake of profit.

The captain himself is guilty of passing on a dear sentence to passengers by ordering them to stay put, perhaps an error of judgment up to the point where he abandoned ship without rescinding the order. Not sure if he passed down the chain of command, or just left.

Sentences will be passed, business will go on as usual. Interests of the powerful remain protected. While relatives of the dead perform a hunger strike, right wing groups held an eat-all-you-can pizza feast in front of their eyes.

Whatever the sentences will be, justice will not be served. I'm hopeful that the relatives show the same stamina as the Korean sex slaves of the Japanese era and keep protesting.

That said, a mandatory death sentence for a captain who abandons ship is romantic foolishness.

  11. I travel with a laptop bag that weighs in at over 13 kilo, the laptop and power brick alone weigh over 7 I was challenged once and when I removed the laptop and power supply they realised I could never get it below 7kilo and there was no way the laptop was going into checked baggage so they abandoned any challenge they were thinking, I travel light no other bags or luggage only - happened once in over 60 flights

If a bag fits in the overhead locker what's the problem = I've seen people boarding flights with two small cases and a pile of other %%%%% unchallenged

In saying that this guy should have been arrested and thrown off the plane and banned from travel - a rude mouth piece

Hey, 1983 called and wants its laptop back! Seriously, my home PC weighs less than your power supply, you should be well below 5 kilos brick, bag and all.

I agree that nobody in their right mind would check their carry-on after putting all their valuables inside. Might as well gift it to the next baggage handler.

  12. To be fair, the EU is also trying to ban or control vaporizers at the moment. It seems to be an unlikely alliance of Big Tobacco and anti-cancer activists plus the usual left leaning "control everything and everyone for their own good" groups (the same people who often want to legalize soft drugs which are combusted and inhaled).

Unfortunately, "electronic cigarette" may have helped introduce the product to cigarette smokers at the beginning, but now it backfires since the word "cigarette" alone is sufficient to tie a lot of knots into a lot of panties. Western mainstream media also seems to be biased against the product, often quoting the same "experts" against vaping over and over again without showing any positive arguments.

And of course the tired "protect the children" argument is used again to rob adults of their own freedom.

The industry itself seems weak to respond and also doesn't help itself by putting enormous 12'' monsters on the market that produce more vapour than can be suffered even by a regular smoker with a sense of style. Of course, these are mostly used by the type of person that wears a baseball cap reversed and has their pants slung low around their knees.

Be assured that once the money has been sorted out and the "right" people have secured their monopolies, the markets will be flooded by overpriced vaporizers and standardized liquids.

  13. Oldest trick in the book of statistics. Compare one frame of reference (year-on-year) with a completely different one (quarter-on-quarter) to say whatever you want to say.

High season in any year will have more arrivals than low season. Duh. Wait for the numbers high season 2013/14 versus 2014/15.

    Other thoughts:

Was it really necessary to answer one specific question 30+ times? Nice to see so many helpful people but can't you guys read 1-2 pages to check if the question has been answered already? There's 3 pages worth of "if business down, Thais put prices up" posts in 8 pages total! I really wonder about the state of mind of the last 20 respondents.

Recent events (KT) won't be reflected in these statistics yet. But they may affect the next quarter. Also, permanent conditions (these long lists that were made by gentlemen with too much time and anger) would not be a cause of the drop. This is the result of the coup, MH and perhaps ebola.

  14. What if he fall in love with this girl and wanted to marry her and paid dowry (700 bath) to mother, who unfortuantely, later come up as dirty woman who was making money? hahaha Just today I read that some 19 yo thai guy had 17 yo thai GF and it was not treated as illegal... hahaha I love those doubt standards for locals and for foreigners...

p.s. I am not protecting that <deleted>, I am just giving an example how perfect our law it (not just Thai, but in general)

Last minute pitch for dumbest post of the week? You have my vote!

oh... sorry, I did not know that you were cheated and paid it... hahahaha

You have no idea what I was talking about, right?

  15. To all the eunuchs who say "he should have paid up", please explain at what amount it's reasonable to have your arm broken or face smashed in? Because this limp-dicked attitude leads straight to a monthly protection payment "for your personal well-being". Also, this is as weak as saying "shouldn't wear a bikini".

Come on, how much do you consider too little to be worth growing a spine for? 40,400,4000?

For the other side, write down license plate (if literate), report to police (if clean). I suspect one or both not applicable for the little scumbag.
