PHUKET: Police believe it will not be long before they catch the man who shot dead motorbike taxi driver Chaliao Piyapanikul at around 9:30 am today (October 30).

Phuket Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonprasit told the press this afternoon that the case was still being treated as one of road rage.

Witnesses told us that the victim use to be a boxer and was quite hot-tempered. They said that whenever he got into an argument he would start a fight.

We dont think the two men had met before. Witnesses said Mr Chaliao honked his horn continuously at the shooter, which may have raised the temperature, he explained.

They started shouting at each other until they stopped at the red light. Mr Chaliao said he was going to get the other man.

Witnesses said the other man warned Mr Chaliao many times that if he got off his bike he would be shot, but apparently he did not listen. After he got off the bike, he was shot around four times before the shooter left the scene.

I believe it will not be hard to find the gunman; Phuket police will definitely arrest him very soon, he added.

Phuket Town Police superintendent Sermphan Sirikong told The Phuket News that police have the license plate number of bike the shooter was riding but were not sure if the plates were fake or if the rider was also the owner of the bike.

Well, if all this is true, I'm wrong about the execution theory.

Yeah, me too. Looks like he messed with the wrong guy. Still surprised about the coolness of the execution, if hot temper and loss of control were responsible for the shooting.

I wish newspapers would adopt a policy of writing "holy" (in inverted commas) just to emphasize that this is a completely virtual concept and not a real thing people are fighting about. It would highlight the nonsensical aspect of killing one another: a "holy" war, a "holy" site, a "holy" man. Lift that bronze age rubbish out of our day to day language and life.

Similarly all other fictional characters and devices:

"Harry Potter"

"witches"

"warp drive"

"god"

Wasn't so long ago that journalists could properly use quotation marks to highlight debatable aspects of their reports.

Any reason that this was road rage and not, for example, a paid hit? Looked very calm and professional to me. As they say here, a business conflict in an unpaid debt?

I know this is a strange one (as many cases here are), but do remember that the suspect turned himself in to police. People who are saying that this is another example of a dodgy story need to explain why the Thai man would come forward in this instance.

An earlier post mentioned that he was caught on CCTV and the local village headman recognized him and convinced him to surrender. I guess the CCTV wasn't directly at the beach but nearby and perhaps few people on it at the time.

If that's true, then coming forward is self defense, not remorse.

Sorry, I forgot, this is the TVF, so the foreigner, in this case even a farang, must be the totally blameless victim of a crime by the evil Thai men and be defended at all cost.

That is nonsense, in the case of the old guy who got his arm broken by a Thai "parking attendant", a lot of the posters directly blamed the foreign victim for not paying up what turned out to be little more than extortion money.

If you like to be right, I suggest this: TVF is extremely polarized, it is always either 100% the Thai at fault (and then, generally the entire nation) or 100% the foreigner's fault (as well as the evil cousins: NEVER the Thai's fault (coincidentally this is the only correct use of "Thai's", regardless of how much disdain posters on TV have for proper plurals) or NEVER the foreigner's fault). Possibly because of calcified brain structures that only allow one or the other, but never a shade in between.

In this case, I find it hard not to at least feel pity for the person who was left comatose and bleeding in the open, by a larger group of people who apparently did not care a bit whether he would live or die there - not a single one of them, did they continue their work afterwards or did they all run? Had it been a group of tourists who beat up a Thai passerby, I would be surprised if the outcome would be different.

Also, "If you like to be right" is of course still my personal view and opinion, under no circumstances can I claim to be an expert authority on what is right all the time.

So this affects hotels and guest houses, as well as private persons who have foreign visitors staying with them for commercial or social purposes.

But most of the discussion here is fueled by the old "my own 90 days" anger of long term foreigners.

A legitimate question however would be about the "notification system". I remember (from 1996 to 2008) that the entry form has a space for the address while in Thailand and that was good for 90 days after entry. So technically, a visitor who stays less than 90 days and wrote "Banyan Tree Bangkok", "Sabai Guesthouse Pattaya" or "my buddy Mike off Sukhumvit 19" should indeed be in the notification system. Well I guess we all know how to lie, so the confirmation by the domicile owner is required as described in the 2nd para. Weird stuff.

The death penalty here us an obvious attempt of the government to protect the higher up responsibles - connected businessmen and corrupt officials who devised and permitted rebuilding of the ferry to a state where it was no longer seaworthy, for the sake of profit.

The captain himself is guilty of passing on a dear sentence to passengers by ordering them to stay put, perhaps an error of judgment up to the point where he abandoned ship without rescinding the order. Not sure if he passed down the chain of command, or just left.

Sentences will be passed, business will go on as usual. Interests of the powerful remain protected. While relatives of the dead perform a hunger strike, right wing groups held an eat-all-you-can pizza feast in front of their eyes.

Whatever the sentences will be, justice will not be served. I'm hopeful that the relatives show the same stamina as the Korean sex slaves of the Japanese era and keep protesting.

That said, a mandatory death sentence for a captain who abandons ship is romantic foolishness.

To be fair, the EU is also trying to ban or control vaporizers at the moment. All this reminds me of the OJ Simpson case. Corrupt and clueless police officers got the right guy but his lawyers were smart enough to destroy all credibility of the authorities. And there was also an aspect of race/racism.

Any speculations that aren't based on video evidence of the original source (eg a press conference where it is clearly said by a reliable source, in Thai, that the phone belonged to the women) are futile.

Did everybody forget that Thailand is host to another hemorrhagic fever, Dengue? So there's been an interest in finding a cure or protection against it in Thailand for a long time, why should it be surprising if something pops up that has the potential to be used against Ebola as well? A lot of people here must be familiar with the history of Viagra, which was also a surprise discovery.

Now for a lot of people here it is crucially important that they can regularly claim that Thailand has not contributed anything positive to the betterment of mankind, so I can understand how much of a risk such an important announcement is at this time. Still, why not wait until the claim has been verified or denied, it's a win-win: If it works, you guys can claim that Thais stole the research from a white nation, if it doesn't work, well you have the program. That's it then. Unless they rescind their confessions after talking to a lawyer, that case is closed for the public eye. Just a tragedy of wrong place, wrong time; not a mafia hit not a hi-so cover up. I can see how that disappoints many here. No matter who the real murderer is, at least hang a Thai.

Let's see how this develops when it goes to court, and don't expect it to be Den Haag. Plenty of opportunity to slam Thai justice corruption then.

Is there a specific reason why the victims are always referred to as "backpackers" and never as "tourists" by local media? AFAIK a suitcase was part of the victim's belongings, which is an accessory for a regular tourist, hardly a backpacker. Given that backpackers have a certain reputation somewhat lesser than tourists, I wonder if there's a hidden motive behind this choice of words. Or is the press just loose with words?
