  1. oh dear....

got a philips sl400i wireless media streamer in uk fro use over here... and it's only video output is a SCART connector.... something unheard of outside Europe it seems :o

Could not find anything in Fortune town... anyone know of a source for a SCART to Component or even S-Video adaptor?

May have to rummage around in Pantip.... save me some hassle please!!

    coops

The best advice would be to get a good quality one shipped from the UK. I managed to find a converter here a year ago but its very low quality.

If you can't do that, you could try some of the Sony outlets because the original Playstation 2 used to ship with an adaptor that converted scart to the three standard video/left/right stereo outputs.

    Good luck

  2. Yes, I agree that map is absolute rubbish. Kata Night Bazaar is just a bit further up from on the right from Club Med going towards Karon. The strange thing is it actually classified as Karon. Its definitely the place I talked about before because I recognise the restaurant. (ate there everyday for 3 weeks - worst English Menu I have ever come across)

    Take Care.

  3. Thanks Mike,

What's the night bazar about? Girlie bars?

Is it a noisy area by any chance?

Never been to Kata but am planning a family trip, it all looks nice on the web, but I rather have a quiet place.

There are a group of small hotels and restaurant in a row of new three storey shophouses. At one end there is a group of bar beers (with girls) also at that end there is a small swimming pool. The last time I was there these bars were very quiet and that was in the high season. Southern Fried Rice hotel is at the other end so shouldn't be noisy. There are number of good restaurants, a beauty salon and a fitness centre in the complex.

Its also a short walk to the beach and the main centre of Kata with a huge variety of bars and restaurants. The whole area is very popular with our scandanavian friends but all in all its a pretty central location. You are also at right end of Kata for an easy run over the hills to Nai Harn and Rawai if you want to get away from the tourist area. Terje the owner of this hotel is good guy and if you talk to about the noise he will give an honest answer. He has spent a lot of money getting his rooms right and also offer motorbike rental.

I know him because I helped set up his wireless internet. I don't get anything out of recommending his place I just its a good cheap place to stay.

    Good luck

  4. Any word on Svigers House.

Planning on staying there with my family. Feedback is appreciated.

Never heard of this establishment. Do you perhaps know where in Kata? In the center or closer to the beach?

    Thanks for the enquiry Chantal,

Here's a link to the place with a map, looks pretty central to me.

Its in the new Kata Night Bazaar which is a small complex of three story shop houses which shared pool and bar area. You might want to try Southern Fried Rice Hotel which is exactly opposite in the same complex. It run by a norwegian guy and has good facilities including cable TV, wifi internet, aircon, safe, fridge and an excellent restaurant.

  5. I don't suppose anyone have got copy of the 180 day evaluation cd for SBS 2003. I've tried ordering it from the MS site but I when I specify Thailand as my country it give a number of regions but Phuket isn't one of them.

If anyone has copy I would gladly pay any expenses incurred in copying it. No copyright laws are infringed because it's only evaluation software and cannot be changed to a full version.

    thanks

  6. Hi there

I lived on Samui for two years and Bangkok for the last couple months (which i dont like!).  I have decided to move to Phuket next month, and would appreciate a little feedback from the board in which are to check out.

I dont want to live in patong, but i will probably have the odd night out there.  What im looking for is a cool little area close to a beach that has a few nice bars, resteraunts, shops and ex-pat fellangs.  Basically a quiet area....but not boring!

For anyone that has been to Samui, i used to live in Bang Rak/Ban Plae laem which i liked very much as it was quiet but had stuff to do, (if you know what i mean) yet was only 10 minutes from Chaweng, the equivalent of Patong.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Is there a general area where mainly ex-pats live that is quiet but has bars etc?

Im looking at paying around 15,000B per month rent, but a little more if the place is worth it (have paid 22 before), i need a phone line (most houses in Samui dont have phone lines and its a pain in the arse to get one...is Phuket the same?) and like a little privacy (no estates!).  An area that is ADSL freindly would be a plus, but not imperative as i get along ok with dial up over here.

If you guys could point out an area that fits this, then i'll deal with finding a house when i get there.... just by riding about hunting '4rent' signs.

Also, and this is a long shot.... but i suppose its out of the question finding a house surrounding a golf course for just 15-20k a month?  Again, not imperative.... a nice area with a community feel is more important.

    Thanks very much

    Batty

I live near Nai Harn beach, which is in the extreme south of the island near Rawai. The beach is one of the best on the island and the area has a good selection of bars and restaurants without being overpowering. There is a friendly local Thai community with many permanent expats also. We have a shorter high season because the swimming in the sea is not really safe between May and November, I see this as a plus point because it makes those months quiet and more relaxing.

There is plenty of property within your price range, although more difficult to find in the high season.

All the golf courses tend to be in the middle or north of the island so living near one is not really an option because there is very little else near them. Besides there are plenty of golf players around here who play regularily so getting there would not be a problem. The nearest (traffic permitting) is about a 20-30min drive.

ADSL is a available as long the house is near the main roads and not too far from the exchange, telephones can be difficult to get so definitely look for a house with one. Other options for internet access are IPstar or GPRS.

Patong is not a real problem although the drive from here is 40min there is a coast road that is very quiet, I make regular nights out trips to Patong without any problem.

The best way to do it is to go early and check in to a cheap guesthouse (500baht) park the car up and have bloody good night out without worrying about driving.

Having been here now for 3 years I wouldn't consider any other part of the island. If you need any more help please PM me.

  7. Does anyone know where I can buy Christmas Crackers from?

No references to cracking women please..

I am hoping that somewhere in Bangkok these can be purchased. I've tried everywhere in Phuket without luck. I am having a party for 20 people and this is an essential part of it so any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  8. Your site does not render properly in Firefox or Netscape because it contains a lot of code that is microsoft specific. This may not be a big issue as microsoft still have over 80% of the browser market.

What is probably more concerning is what the search engines see when they index your site. There are a number of utilities on the web that emulate what search engine spider will see when visiting your site, try : What a Search Engine May See

It doesn't seem to see all your content. I would recommend getting hold of a copy of Dreamweaver 8 and slowly re-creating your site with this tool. Cascading Style Sheets would improve loading speeds and help seperate content from formatting making it more search engine friendly.

Personally having used both FrontPage and Dreamweaver I find the latter easier to use and much more powerful.

  9. I love the timing on this.  :o

All right guys, I need some urgent help on this.  I am leaving next week (trying to get my plane tickets today or tomorrow) to go to Penang to get my first Non-immigrant visa.  And soon after, work permit.

    I have:

My current passport and stamps (of course)

A Sponsor letter from the company

    A Visa Application form

    And ... a photocopied:

    กรมทะเบียนการค้า

    ใบสำคัญแสดงการจดทะเบียนห้างหุ้นส่วนบริษัท

I can roughly translate this to:

Department of Registered Commerce (not Ministry of Commerse)

Proof Of Company Share and Registration

Again, this is just a photocopy.

Is there something else that I need?  What would that be, and how would I get it?

Any urgent help is much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Im in JML's shoe's.

I am going to Panang this Sunday for a non I B. All I have is a letter from the sponsering company.

Is this going to be sufficient?

Can I obtain an application form while I'm there?

Do I need photos etc?.....My sponser hasn't mentioned anything else other than go to Panang and get a visa.

All this talk has got me worried....

    HELP!

    :D

Why don't people go to perth where you only need a copy of the front page of your passport and one passport foto. I have done this succesfully twice. the consulate only opens on tuesdays and thursdays. if you get to the consulate before 10 am they will prosses your application and return it after lunch. The office is in a solicitors office on the 6th floor of 26 St Georges terrace which is near the swan river. all you need is 225 $AS. A resonable priced hotel will cost 75 $AS or you can stay in Central backpackers from 12 $AS. If you book your trip with a travel agent for flights only you will find the flights cost 23- 26,000 Thb, There some three day trips with accomadation for around the same price but the days may not co-inside with the opening times of the consulate.

Expensive but a lot less hassel for the small business.

  10. Yes I did last Christmas and everything was delivered in perfect condition.

Make sure you talk to the supplier about the value of goods because this will determine how much import duty you will pay, and tell them not to include the shipping cost on the invoice. If they do Thai Customs will charge you tax on the whole invoice about.

For example I spent 140 uk pounds on goods, the shipping via UPS was 80 pounds, I paid tax on 220, so be warned don't make the same mistake as me.

Talk to supplier most of them will help you out.

  11. Someone told me that Jerry who owns the Freedom Bar in Rawaii has been muscled out by an ex-teacher called Jack. I have been there 2 or 3 times and quite like this Jerry, he's a real laugh. Seems a shame. Anybody know anything ?

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I thought Charlie owned freedom bar

  12. What size of land are you looking for? and of course what do you consider cheap land.

I have a friend (thai) who is trying to sell a large lump of land 3.5 hours (50+ Rai will split) outside of Bangkok in Isaan. It would be ideal for an outdoor centre (mainly because there already is one in the area). Mountains, river, lakes etc.

On the main road etc. and will sell cheap.

Anyway if your interested I have some pictures and the land title documents here in Phuket, so give me a shout. By the way its not rice land so will not require land filling.

  13. Well after responding to the first post I went out to look what was going on and got heavily involved in the whole situation. In Nai Harn there were many tourists trying to leave the area.

I took a few up to Kata Viewpoint and then went back to get my family. I didn't go to the beach because I didn't want to get in the way of the emergency services, who looked to be doing a fine job.

As the village is very close to the sea there were many rumours of more waves so the Police advised everyone to go to higher ground. We all went up to Kata Viewpoint, there were a lot of people up there and I believe some even slept up there last night.

We came back around 5pm and went to the beach were we could not believe our eyes, next to the Phuket Yacht Club Hotel there used to be a row of restaurants and shops now it's just a pile of rubble. The sunbeds from the beach are smashed up everywhere the whole area looks like a bomb site. We still don't know how many people lost there lives but at 10am the beach is normally crowded. I helped a couple who had been down there and they were very upset, they had been with 10 other members of their family who at that point were missing.

Tourists are now leaving the area in droves.

  14. We're still trying to find out what is happening. Nai Harn Beach is certainly flooded along with a lot of houses and business around there. I live about half a km from the beach and we are okay (for now).

The police have the whole area blocked off (well that's according to my misses who has a business down there). I'm going to take the truck down there in a minute find out what's going on.

  15. Marks and Spencers on the 2nd floor of Central have their own brand along with biscuits (digestives etc), it's good but expensive.

There is a new small deli in Rawai that sells Tetley Tea bags. The Deli is next door to the Baverian Beer Garden thingy on the left as you aproach Rawai Beach from Chalong circle.

    Enjoy.

  16. Two sign that made me laugh in Phuket, one on a pancake stall that proudly advertised "Japanese Crap"

The other was in Phuket Airport, although it's since been changed, near the elevator it said "3rd floor Muslim Prating Room" I felt kind of jealous that the Muslims had a special room for prating around in. :o

  17. Anyone know where I can find Guiness Stout in Phuket to buy home?

Can't afford the 300 odd baht per pint in the pub when my ma comes to town  :o

Tinned draught Guinness is marketed by Best Foods in Phuket. There are various retail outlets Makro sells it for around 160baht a tin, also the new Tops supermarket in Central Festival stock it at a similar price.

It's actually not that expensive in the bars now only around 180baht a pint.

    Enjoy !!

  18. Marks & Spencers Tea is a available in Bangkok and Phuket although it is expensive. Some small Deli's in Phuket now stock Tetley Tea bags.

If none of that helps get yourself down to your nearest wholesaler and buy a case of PG Tips as I did on my last flight. We now have boxes of the stuff all over the place.

If your in Phuket get yourself down to my other half's place in Nai Harn called Auntie's Cafe she serves PG Tips, English Sausages, Bacon, Pies, Fish & Chips etc etc

  19. Robinsons Department Store sell a cheaper version. They have a catologue in their sports department from which you can order a table. The maximum price is about 20,000 baht but there are some cheaper models.

That's the Robinsons in Phuket but I assume they all stock a similar range.

  20. Officially November is the start of the high season in Phuket. The seas have calmed down so most beaches are okay. There still maybe some rain about but mostly in the night. The days should be hot and sunny.

So in my opinion November is a good month to visit Phuket.

    Mike

  21. You can of course just stay on the lower floor and play the slot machines, poker machines and automated roulette with no membership fee.

If your wife is Thai make sure she uses her Thai ID card and not passport to exit otherwise she will have to pay the 500 baht Burmese visa stamp fee.

Apart from that is got to be the best and easiest visa run from Phuket, friendly immigration, everything done for you, nice safe boat a real pleasure.

    Have a good one.

    Mike
