  1. Today, I woke up at 03:30 am, the kid was crying because he wanted to pee.

I decided to send some emails off as a means to get my wife's visa. While reading Thaivisa, I was made to realize that my life in Thailand is boring - devoid of ladyboy stories and whatnots.

I realize I hadn't lost my wallet or passport nor has my wife been missing for 5 days while her collection of 5 phones are ringing off the hook.

Next time, I will consider the audience and make sure I write about their ladyboys.

  2. I am on the final days of my holiday with wife and family (2 small children and assorted other members) here in Bangkok. Today, while prepping to pack my luggage, I opened one of those free business class bags I had handed to my wife and found a travel toothbrush and toothpaste. Thinking I could use this bag, I then sought to remove the "trash" tissue paper inside.

instant pain. I had slit my thumb with whatever was inside. I later learned it was my wife's eyebrow razor blade - just one of many "stashes" she keeps from the kids reach by placing it high on a stack of portable containers.

I showed my wife my bleeding thumb and asked for the first aid kit. You'd think I'd asked her for her best blank look as she gave me one of the best blank looks I'd ever observed.

Long story short: I suggest if you have children to do a safety check and make sure your first aid kit is present and in good shape. old first aid kits are useless for a number of reasons but can be used as a teaching aid.

Lastly, does tobacco help stop the bleeding. Prior to the antiseptic on a gauge, they gave me tobacco leave to help sstem the bleeding which actually appeared to do the trick in the 2 minutes I had put it on.

Basically, in the end, the wife seemed inconvenienced by my silly actions. Why did I open that bag?? seemed to be her concern. Slow was the response. She didn't like my recommendations that glass needs to be eliminated and sharp objects locked away and clearly marked as dangerous.

My blood pressure rising didn't help so I shut up and will instead just go out and buy a first aid kit and maybe look for a youtube video on safety in thai language.

Let us know if you've had similar experience and resulting actions taken

  3. " The outcomes are likely to be used as a guide for national development."

This must be the whole point of the report.

My wife, who is a woman and..from the central part of Thailand, could be entitled for the national development scheme to be implemented by the coup leaders. I'm thinking this will occur after they finish turning Bangkok streets into square blocks.

As this may take some time, I think I'll have to print this out to keep in my wallet so that I can show her these results every 2 weeks to point out that she is wrong again to trust our 3 year old son to pick the winning lottery numbers.

Wait... Isn't Yingluck Shinawatra a woman from the central region of Thailand and the coup leaders are men from Bangkok? clever.

  4. I just sent an email to the US Embassy BKK asking what do they have to see, documents, to certify my monthly income. Hope they or someone answers.

Embassy statement is pretty easy from U S Embassy in BKK but you need to go there in person.

    1. Make an appointment online, they won't let you in with out one, except in an emergency. Appointment are usually already booked about 1 to 2 weeks. Make a copy of your appointment and take it with you

    2. Gather what ever you have to verify your income. Get what you have easily available as more than likely you won't need any of it.

When you get to the Embassy don't wait in the long line on the left, just go up to the window and show them your appointment and you get right in

3 When you check in tell them you need to do a verification of income statement and they will give you the form, I think you can download the form on the embassy website. You fill in the income amount

    4. Fill out and take to cashier and pay fee around $50 U S

    5. Next you will be called up to the window and asked to check over the form and verify that everything is correct. Once that is done you will be asked if you swear that all statements are true to the best of you knowledge. If you answer yes they will notarize it and you are all finished.

I know I will get a bunch of feed back on this but I just did it last month and this was my 7th time, same procedure

Also I recently read that the Thai gvmt. has extended the validity time of this statement up 6 months

You only forgot one thing. Make sure you take your passport with you.

Set up the appointment early as if you need to make any copies or get more data, then they allow you to return the same day on the same appointment letter.

  5. Recent Defense strategies applied during my last recent trip to Bangkok.

When exchanging large amounts of money, I took my wive's brother to watch over for kamoy. I said its because he knows Muay Thai. He said Muay Thai is no good against "meet" (knife). This tells me I need to enhance my strategy as money would be lost as he won't do anything except look like a watchout.

When a man stood near me on a noncrowded escalator, I just moved away from him. I didn't act like I owned the space.

If I feel there is a group dynamic too close to me, I will move to a different BTS waiting line and have let trains pass without boarding just to see if there is any odd group movements. There's always another train in a few minutes.

Lastly, dress like a slob. Leave the Gucci shoes at home. leave the gold amulets at home.

  6. Compared to going to Petchabun, I enjoyed songkran yesterday in Bangkok.

Clean water vs. stale smelly water from the ditches.

So little traffic in BKK vs. "rot dtit" 8-12 hour drive to upcountry

No worrying about access to whatever limited hotel space is available.

There seemed to be much more water throwing participation on the streets vs. previous years

  7. It seems that whenever the bomb landed, somebody just buried it.

No consideration for anybody in the future.

Unlikely to have been buried on purpose. A surprisingly high proportion of bombs dropped from aircraft hit the ground without detonating. So if a 500lb object hits soft ground at full speed, it will bury itself. Left there for posterity to discover. There are most likely thousands of UXBs in major cities all around the world, especially Europe after WW2. Having lived in London I know from experience they are unearthed on a regular basis. Difference is, London scrap dealers don't try to cut them open with an oxyacetylene cutters! TiT

Thanks for clarifying that. It would seem that the ground would be effected in some way because you've displaced some.

  8. You say the in-laws are on your side; but, didn't you also say your gf put all the land titles in her mom's name? That doesn't jive.

I've not heard of many Thai families abandoning somebody who knows how to "make money". It seems like they always want to keep sources of money as acquaintances.

    Good luck.

  9. To say that covering your actions while inputting your PIN is the only way to protect you could be false. Thiefs most likely can put a keypad cover over the ATMs keypad.

For the person who says they can spot adhesion residue, maybe the thieves know this too and use a solvent to clean the adhesion residue.

Basically, you are going to have to inspect the whole ATM environment if you can. Save your receipts (always ask for one) for each transaction. And.. not be rushed.

My story of ATM theft involves the Bangkok airport. I tried to withdraw money; but, the machine did not spit out my money. It gave me a printed receipt but I stupidly did not read it and at that time never collected receipts - which was my mistake. All the bad vibes were there: rushed to make a flight, a person lines up behind me (maybe trying to get me to act rushed), flight home may cause failure to remember and loss of receipt. Anyways, I did see that 2 withdrawals were performed.

Did I pursue the matter? no. The bank in my resident country said I needed a police report. WHAT??? I'm supposed to fly back (paying more for airfare than the withdrawals). I could not pursue the matter. Luckily, my company pays for my vacation; therefore, I felt that I got stung but at least there was some money paid to me for my vacation so it eased the pain.

  10. I've ridden that Beijing/Tianjin train. Its great alternative to the dangerous road; but, there had been reports in recent years about the safety of he highspeed trains based on actual problems that have occurred on other routes.

How are they gonna have enough customers who will pay for the ride on a daily basis to pay for the politicians and maintenance? (a redundant cost I know as actual maintenance will be only a paper trail).

I would hope they take care of the water control/flood management first because that is a bigger concern
