  1. Didn't realise there was a Cheers Extra..... but the original was dreadful. Very watery. I bought a case to sink with a few pals in the cafe...... we did 2 bottles and slung the rest. Bloody awful. Give me a good Old Speckled Hen anyday! :o

  2. I remember coming back from Bulilum once on the bike....... tankin' along and I feel a rapid "taptaptaptaptapping" on my crash helmet..........

.......the wench has only got her hard boiled egg out and merrily cracking the shell on my bonce and eating it at 160 on a GPZ1000RX!!

  3. Voilà! what do you think ? Interesting ?

Yes.... and tiring! If it were me but having to roughly do your itinerary I'd cut out either Ayutthaya or Kan'buri and spend more time in the islands and up North...... if you're going as far as Chiang Rai why not fly into Chiang Mai, hire a bike and "do the loop"..... Chiang Rai, Mae Chan, Chiang Saen, Mae Sai, Mae Fa Luang, Mae Ai, Fang and then down into Chiang Mai? Beautiful!

But..... your baht, your holiday! Enjoy!

  4. This is from a report I did years ago of a bike tour to Surin and Si Sa Ket:

"The other "must see" sight whilst in the region (Si Sa Ket) is the view from on top of the cliff Pha Mor-Edaeng, at Khao Phra Wihan. This was certainly the highlight of the trip for me, and rates as one of my most favourite "sights of Thailand" even though the sight is actually of Cambodia and Laos, from Thailand! What you do is take the 221 south-east from Si Sa Ket for 100km, (or as far as you can go, coz its the same thing) then park up at the border guard outpost and small market, wander up the steps on the hillside on the left... and you will come face to face with the most incredible panorama of Cambodia, Laos, the mountainous border seperating the two countries, endless forest stretching into infinity and the horizon, so dam_n far away you can actually see the curvature of the earth! Honestly folks, you stand at a guardrail that is mere feet away from a 3-400 foot vertical drop to the forest floor below, and the whole breathtaking view just goes on, and on, and on! An absolute must for anyone touring in that part of the country."

Hope you can make use of the info.

  5. There are some new (Thai) crash helmets on the block. They are very comfortable, lightweight, well padded and have a mirrored visor.

Obviously not up to Euro safety standard but if anyone wants a “run-around” lid, these are good….. I wore mine on the Ultra in the rain and it cut a lot of noise out, and it was nice to have a full visor but on an open face lid in the rain.

Mine is size M which is 57-58. Depending on where you shop, retail for around 850 baht.

  6. Ive recently bought a hibrid helmet, its like an off road full face helmet so there is plenty of air circulation but it has a concealed visor for high speeds the best of both worlds trust me!

Any chance you can post a photo of it? Nice to hear other folks reccommendations....... even nicer to see the lid "in the flesh!"

Also, if it's not a local and easily found one....... where d'you get it and how much? (Says he presuming you are in Thailand, and bought said helmet here!)

  7. I'm not familiar with "Caberg". Where's that brand from?

I love my Italian Airoh Mathisse RS Modular/Flip helmet, and indeed, the "jetfighter" sun shade is very handy and looks pretty cool too.

Airoh helmets are available at FastCorner and I hear PandaRider has them too.

Caberg are Italian too. Not sure if there is a Bkk outlet by now.... I had ours brought over by a friend a few years ago. 10,000 baht each which was a steal, far as I'm concerned. Another club member bought his standard open face Caberg in Norway for the equivalent of 15,000 baht.

That Airoh modular looks the biz...... I presume Fast Corner are Bkk? Where? And how much for that lid?

I have really only ever used The Paddock for my bits and pieces shopping in town.

    Cheers

  8. Once in a while a bike manufacturer gets it absolutely right........ that original yellow Triumph Daytona (circa '95?) was pure sex on wheels, the Duke Monster....... wow! Even H-D did it when they tarted up the old Electra Glide and the Road King was born, and now they've given us this...... the XR1200. Originally designed just for the Euro market, it's now a hot seller all over the world. Awesome performance and great looks.
Well here is the new HD XR1200 which I do really like http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content...sp?locale=en_US that is like a naked sport bike, looks good and should ride good. I asked HD Thailand for a price but they suck, still no price of any new bike from them??? They must have sold at least 1 new bike this year, so when you ask for a price and a week later still "cannot find yet" one start to wonder what they are up to. Cheers Bard

Bard old chap I introduced that XR to this thread on page 1....... suprised you didn't see it as I was waiting for a comment from you long before now....... thought some of you might like it! H-D Bkk have now sold 5 of 'em I believe, and they are around the 750,000 baht mark. If you want to speak to someone there just ask for Ross. He has one himself and is happy as a pig in poop!

Oh well, after some tongue-in-cheek posts from some folk this thread seems to have deteriorated into a slagfest with iamaneggspurt giving us his very narrow minded but oh so boringly typical view of H-D riders.

<deleted> it....... I ride anything on two wheels, I am a biker first and foremost, have blatted a GSXR1100 all over Thailand and now run an Electra Glide Ultra, which I HAVE taken at speed, scraping boards, around Bira!! And did it all without the help of a beard! (And my 1200 H-D cafe racer was a big hit there too).

  9. I don't suppose anyone has a list of traffic offences? I recently got pulled over at a 12-man checkpoint, and he went through a list of things that he could fine me for. Eventually he got me for not carrying a copy of my green book with me. Since it was far from home though, he happily agrees to change the 200b fine to a 100b on the spot parking fine. I wanted to see the rest of the list but he wouldn't let me.
Yep. The budget crunch is hitting. I have paid 2 spot fines in the last 7 days. Always in the Kasem Rat Road area of Klong Thoey port. Yesterday I was going back to Immigration. 20 cops on the road. Same as you ZZ. Lisc, reg. proof of insurance. Luckily for me I have a shrunken copy of the green book, laminated I carry in my wallet.

Is it actually an offence to be riding without a copy of your green reg book with you? I know it is if you are without your license..... but the green book/copy? I take a laminated copy credit card size when on tour, but should I start taking it with me at all times now? Surely a current tax disc is proof that the bike has insurance...... isn't that the way now...... you cannot tax a bike unless you have insurance, or is it the other way around? I dunno...... grey matter's getting a bit mushy these days!

    Someone clarify?

  10. ^ Methinks you're making the same mistake so many others do....... there's nothing wrong with a Harley's performance for handling the worst that Thailand can throw at you, especially with floating discs added.

Acceleration is awesome on the newer models. It's just that sooooooo many H-D riders don't know how to get the best out of their machine, having never ridden anything else! Proper use of your gearbox in the twisty bits can be brilliant fun even on a big bagger like mine.

I have no doubt that having spent much of my youth on Jap race bikes around the lanes of Kent and Sussex stood me in good stead for how I handle the bike today. Sorry, trying not to sound big-headed here but I despair of so many H-D riders who crank it up into 5th and stay there all day!!

Emergency direction changes on a machine of that size weight (sheer mass) and position are just nothing like the flickability of a more street designed machine..

....... again, depends on who's doing the flicking!! :o

  12. Was on a predominately H-D poker run a few years ago...... started with breakfast at Cafe Kronberg...... about 50 Harleys and 1 Honda (from the club I ride with) parked up outside. The guys couldn't work out why I was chatting with Chef and dissapeared into the kitchen for a second or two.

Ten mins later I burst through the front doors........ "Michael, Michael, go check....your bike's sprung a leak!!"

    Oh, how we larfed!! :o:D:D

  13. quite simply they are 2 COMPLETELY different styles of bike and riding.

    Exactly. 'Nuff said!
