On the box "Gold Medal Award for World Class Quality"

I'm guessing that is in the category of "Best Thai Beer With Leopard on Label".

I think these days it's hard to find a beer that hasn't won some kind of award tbh

Pattaya is a world class resort destination. It has everything a family could want or a single man or woman. Yes the sex trade exists, but it exists in many countries, Pattaya should not be labeled the sex capital of anywhere. This industry is available if you want to find it. If you do not want to see it then there are many other things to do in Pattaya that are not connected to the sex trade.

Anyone who has lived here for any length of time is well aware that sex is available and where to go to get it. How does this make Pattaya any different from Amsterdam, Nevada, Germany or Australia? All of these locations have sex available. I know that these locations are more discrete and are not visible as a street show, but that does not make them any less a location where sex is for sale.

I have been living in Pattaya for close to 20 years and I may hit Walking Street or similar venues once or twice a year. Just because it is there does not mean you have to partake.

I would agree with the Tourism big wigs, Pattaya has much to offer to everyone and the sex industry is but a small part of that. In actual square footage Walking street, Soi 6 and Soi Buakao do not take up very much space, but they get a lot of attention from the media.

Are you seriously trying to liken the sex industry in 'other countries' to what goes on in Pattaya?

It's 'available if you want to find it'?? :D Are you kidding? It's difficult to not freaking find it!!

Have you been to Amsterdam, Nevada or Germany cause if you had you'd see in 2 minutes how Pattaya is different.

    Good grief!

  3. Is Pattaya being the 'sex capital of the world' really controversial? Maybe the authorities should take a look around the city.

They have changed some stuff and made some more tourist elements but come on, who are we kidding??

I also think they could shut down more than half the 'nightlife female entertainment' and they'd still be too much. There loads there. People always think it's a sign from the devil from a popular go-go bar closes but there are waaaaaaay too many there, imo.

It's not my thing and they tourist the shit out of Pattaya and I'd never go but I have friends there and they're there for one reason and it's not the water slides and adventure parks

  4. This nightlife on Pha Ngan thread seems to be full of Samui recommendations, doesn't it?

I like Koh Pha Ngan when it's not full moon, nowhere is mega busy, party time, depends what you're looking for.

Thong Sala has some pubs and there are beach bars at most places. Haad Rin has Cactus Bar on the beach which always seems the most popular place late late night. I think everywhere seems to close, which kind of forces anyone out to eventually head there.

  5. I am sure I read months back that Cheap Charlies in Soi 11 was closing. Apparently, something being built on the land the bar has sat on for decades. IIRC he was trying to find a new spot for the bar (probably won't be the same).

Found some links: (as thought, these are from last summer and state things will change in about 9 months so probably about now-ish):

  6. This is a shame as I have flown Nok a fair few times.

Last trip thought I discovered that Thai Smile was also quite cheap and there was certainly no issue flying with them either.

Nok do the flight/boat combo to some islands though and seemed like Air Asia do that as well but others it's not so common but just have to old skool it and go to the town and then the pier instead

  7. Of all the dregs that turn up in expat life, especially in Thailand a lot of people are actually wary of guys in a freaking suit!

Are you for freaking real!? :signthaivisa:

Some of you may be unfamiliar with this but sometimes people dress up smart and go to a thing called 'a job'. I know, I know ... crazy world, right!?

I see guys in suits in Thailand they invariably look like they have proper jobs and are not hanging out in the places most people on here are hanging out in. So, guy in suit, not an issue.

Maybe some absolute loser looking weird guy wearing a suit I may wonder what it's all about but 'wearing a suit' in general, what the f ...

Koh Chang is definitely a possibility, but we're wondering is it too much of a trek for one destination, and in the opposite direction of our final destinations (Koh Phangan / Tao and then fly back to BKK via Chumpon). But, thank you for the advise re Samet... if they're knocking the place, not much point going.

We've been to Ankor Wat and loved it! But for us it was a 'once off' visit... don't think I could do with being 'templed out' again :)

From BKK to Koh Chang you always think 'oh, it's a long way to go' but it's worth going when you get there, like a lot of things.

Firstly, you're probably going to go somewhere so you'll be travelling for some time, at least. Kanchanburi is nice and few hours from BKK btw.

Koh Samet isn't far (closer than Chang) and also very pleasant. Was there in summer (low season) and beaches were lovely. I understand things may be a lot busier in Winter.

Koh Chang though, definitely go. You can get a bus from Ekkamai at 7:45am, take you right to Laem Ngop (pier) and then onto boat. You'll be in your place by 1:30pm or 2pm

Once you're there, showered and ready to go out for a late beach swim and relax or food or a few beer you will have completely forgotten that you travelled on that bus and you got up early, etc.

When I was in Samet recently I ended up with a random 3 days and I love BKK and happy to stay there but thought 'go on, I'll go Samet' - been 20 years since I been there actually. You think 'it's only 3 days' but once you get there none of that matters, you get some sun, swim, eat some food on your balcony at your hotel and just relax.

Just do it, it's worth it! After doing that I thought to myself even though it was good to get back to Samet for a change I'd have totally gone that bit further and gone to Chang as well even if I had that random few days again.

I probably should just do homework, instead of posting .

looks like it would actually be more advisable for longer rural stays, whatever qualifies as rural.  rather than short stays like my own.......

    • Low risk with additional advice: antimalarial tablets are not usually recommended, however, they can be considered for certain travellers who may be at higher risk e.g. longer stay in rural areas, visiting friends or relatives, those with medical conditions, immunosuppression or those without a spleen. Atovaquone/proguanil OR doxycyclineOR mefloquine is advised for those at risk.

Tbh I have been in and out of these places 20+ years and never taken a malaria pill in my life, mountains, beaches, jungle, whatever.

I think about 99% of people I met that took malaria pills always seemed bloody sick too!

  10. Which airline?

I have booked for me and GF in the past and booking under my name, when I do the online check in it usually prints both boarding passes, i.e. 2 pages, without prompting. I found that on most airlines.

Is there an option to 'email boarding pass in .pdf'? Maybe that will be different.

Otherwise, give the airline customer service a call

Booking.com is transparent, the headline price is the price you pay and i have rarely been able to find a site that undercuts them.

I have used agoda's app and you can set it to show the 'final' price in that without having to think about the add ons.

Tbh I find agoda beat booking.com on most occasions, even if they're owned by the same lot.

Tripadvisor now own booking.com.  Agoda sometimes has different prices.  It's also worth checking the hotels website.  I've gotten better deals there sometimes after signing up for their member program.  Best to use several to compare prices!

How does that work if Agoda and Booking.com are supposedly to be owned by the same company? TripAdvisor own both now then?
