Thanks to all who have supplied names of lawyers, and to those who PM'd me with lawyers. They have all been passed on to Jim.
He has been talking to the UK consul, so I will keep the forum updated as to what happens.
Query to moderators I posted in General forum asking for a lawyer in Bangkok, so why was it moved to the Phuket forum ?

Basically the story is this :
My mate, a gentleman and Scotsman, leases a guesthouse and bar in Chalong.
One night he parked his car in it's usual place outside his place which is under a streetlight. While he was sleeping a Thai girl aged 21 riding a motor bike without a helmet at 0330 rode into the back of it and was killed.
His insurance company is backing him. He had to go to Chalong Police Station where he was told the girls' family wanted 500,000. He had several conferences with the police and some sort of prosecutor and on the fifth occasion he was lodged in the cells and told he would be charged. After 7 and a half hours in the cells - usual story 40 people in a tiny cell, no proper toilet - he was released on 200,000 bail.
The RTP failed to get a blood alcohol reading( didn't bother) from the girl.
As I said, he is a gentleman, can anyone recommend a good lawyer ?
British consul in Phuket is useless, he is is trying to contact the Embassy. I take it they will be useless too.
Anyone with any ideas ?

WE ARE ALL DOOMED !!!!!
Climate change is real.
Don't people remember when AIDS killed most of the human population, or that terrible New Year's Eve 1999/2000 with all those planes falling out of the sky and electricity failing ?
What about the hundreds of millions killed by SARS and Bird Flu ?
All endorsed by many, many scientists.
This is the latest apocaliyse. Apocalypse Now !!!!
Time for another beer.

Try Phisit Karanee Road in Patong, between The Bar (formerly Scottie's Bar) and Monte's. You should be able to find a one room cold water apartment for around 5,000 a month. 20 minute walk to Bangla Road, or 2 minutes on motor bike taxi - 30 baht.
Goof luck.

At 67 kg I would not be afffected by this, also I would not be affected as I choose not to fly these crap budget airlines which are looking for more and more ways to ensure their "budget" (cheap charlie) passengers are gouged to the maximum.
Spend a little more and fly with a decent airline.

When I loaned a friend some money to go back to Oz and claim an Age Pension we drew up an agreement and had it witnessed by my accountant and another partner, thus ensuring that if he returned and did not pay he could be arrested.
Had no problems at all, witnesses were probably not needed but loaning money anywhere it should be legally enforcible.

A friend of mine, Andre who ran the Monte Carlo Hotel in Patong, came here, had a drink or two, and after 21 years had to have some people help him get home to the UK.
The UK embassy were a problem, but there weren't any at the airport. Paid 20,000 baht and was poured onto the plane.
Mai mee bun ha.

As above, Keng Kiew pharmacy (sp. ?), also RJ's pharmacy in Paradise complex. But generally :
There are :
No honest lawyers
No honest real estate agents
No honest bankers
The above are worldwide; and

When I was getting a new passport in Bangkok the Australian Embassy took my old one and gave me photocopies with Embassy stamps and an explanation in Thai on them. Thai Airways wouldn't accept this but did accept my "ID Card" - a Melbourne Cricket Club member's card with my photo on it.
Beat that for unusual photo ID.

I asked this question in the Phuket Gazette's Issues and Answers column about eight years ago. The reply from the Superintendent at the time, published in the Gazette was 18 to drink in a bar, 21 to work in a bar.
It may be different rules in different provinces, and things may change with different Governors, e.g. closing times.
However an 18 year old farang will have no problems getting a drink anywhere here.

We need a poll here.
Has anyone ever gone to the village with his girl and met a father who wasn't a drunken layabout ?

We had four of the scruffiest, dangerous looking Thais of all time come into my Patong restaurant one day and buy cokes. I asked my girl to find out who they were, and possibly get them out.
Turned out they were undercover cops. The boss, a sergeant-major I think, said I should leave and come back in an hour. After he assured me that there would be no shooting (this was during the crackdown around 2003) I left.
Came back, the staff were jumping around excited - a farang had been arrested for selling seven eccie tabs - got seven years, by the way - and the police had paid the bill including the farang's beer.
I'll never work this country out.

Geek, do you mean the Nana Cultural Centre Plaza ?
Just the place for this culture lover.

I got married to a girl in the UK, and years later got divorced in Australia, so it can be done. It included advertising in UK papers, statutory declarations, etc.
Usually a Thai lawyer here will advise you, fiercely overcharge and demand money for bribes. But I'll bet it can be done......

Recommend Mr Kwan - good driver and can be tour guide, number 081-081-9182. Car or minivan available. Tell him Bobby recommended him.

Believe it or not, there is some sort of tax on footpaths in Phuket. I had a built-up sort of footpath outside of my restaurant and paid extra tax because of it. It was about 9 meters long.
I think this may be the answer. (or maybe the person I leased from was just robbing me. Hard to imagine in Thailand, Na ?).

Been several times with the Thai beach boys who do the jetski/parasail on Patong Beach. About 180 baht for a set, i.e. bottle of Samsong, ice, coke. Of course I had to pay.
But after a few more drinks they had to listen to me sing "My Way".

I agree with last post. Try to work and live without aircon, seen too many people live in their rooms during really hot weather with the aircon on.
Get rid of it, take lots of showers, change your clothes often -laundry is cheap - drink some gatorade on really hot or oppressive days.
Enjoy.

Danger !!! Danger !!!
They don't serve booze on Brunei !!! They used to let you give them your duty free and they would add mixers for you, but of course cannot take liquids in hand luggage now.
And up to six hours at the dry airport between flights.

Back after the 2004 tsunamis I knew an Aussie bloke who firmly believed they were caused by the CIA to damage his business.
They were watching him from a satellite too, and he usually had an open umbrella so they couldn't read his lips.
Just as likely I suppose.

More lefty UN crap. By the same logic fruitpickers in Australia are slaves too.
You can't hire people from Myanmar as sailors ? There are a lack of professional Thai fishermen ?
The people who wrote this report are the same people who want to frighten us with global warming and other left wing crap.
