I had a bar in Patong for six years - Scottie's in Pisit Koranee Road, didn't make much money but lived OK, no problem going for a good meal, trip home most years. Really hurt after the tsunami though. I think that makes me a bit of a success story, believe it or not. Saw a lot of farang come "buy" a bar, and go after six or twelve months, broke and often alcoholic.
Saw a few bars do very well only to find the the owner wanted huge keymoney again at the end of the lease and if you're doing well probably double the rent as well. You can't win.
People who came here in the early 90's and got a 15, 20 or 25 year lease did well.
My view, don't do it. If you want to do it for a year - just for fun -and not worry about making too much money, then do it.

Phuket International had (has ?) an Australian doctor, Peter Davidson (or similar). Try ringing him , he is a good bloke and doesn't mind a beer or a game of cricket. They also have a German doctor who dresses all in black, marches around the hospital, rides a Harley wearing a First world war German helmet, and is employed there despite being clearly insane.
So there is hope......

i used to believe in reincarnation.
But that was in a previous life

Generally paying a fine and getting a receipt gives you three days grace, i.e.caught with no helmet - three days to buy a helmet. You only have to show the policeman your receipt.

Look in the Visa and Migration to Other Countries thread - pinned topic. The rules are all there.
And it is 13 weeks maximum. I knew a couple of people who used to fly to Darwin, stand in the Centrelink queue, tell the officer they were back, the return to the back of the queue and then report that they were leaving tomorrow. No problems.
Stupid, stupid bureaucracy.

Going down to Penang on a visa run I once took the bus from Phuket to Had Yai, 8 hours 270 baht. On the way back I spent the night at the King's Hotel in Had Yai and then flew to Phuket on Thai, 40 minutes, 740 baht. And yes, I got a hot coffee and breakfast.
Pay your money, take your choice......

V Australia is Virgin, another crap no-frills airline like Jetstar and AirAsia. No seat space, hire a movie, pay for drinks and meals IF you can find an attendant.
Some very good deals from Malaysia $788 AUD return and Singapore at the moment.
Look around, don't fly crap airlines, and enjoy your flight.

What happened to BBQ Hut ? Been there a long time, good food, etc. I was there last year.....

I've posted before here, but in the Alice Bar murder, Alice and two young Thai men were charged with the murder.
I don't know what happened to the men, but Alice was soon seen walking the streets again......and the Police now owned the Alice Bar (where Scruffy Murphy's is now.) TIT.

If you fly with Air Asia, Jetstar or any other low-price cr*p airline, don't be surprised when you get cr*p service.
Coming back Had Yai- Phuket with Thai some years ago I had to re-arrange flight times about three times. No problems, great service, perfect English.......and no extra cost.
Simple, na ?

If you are going to be stuck in any airport for five hours Changi is the one to do it in. As you get a 30 day visa on arrival you can take a free bus trip for an hour around the city or to Sentosa Beach. Internet access ( 15 minutes at a time) is free, there is a free cinema upstairs. There are plenty of places to eat, and of all the airport bars in all the world walk into Harry's Bar, slightly expensive, have a drink and you can smoke in there.....Singapore works and so does Changi.

Jetstar are cr*p !!!
Note if you are Australian and have a Singapore Airlines frequent flyer card, you can get a Westpac Visa card and get frequent flyer points every time you use it.
Types of air travel :
1. First Class
2. Business Class
3. Premium economy
4. Economy
5. Cargo Hold
6. Jetstar

Can any Hamburger lovers answer the questions I asked two posts ago ? It only takes going to Steve-eo's having a beer - if you don't want a hamburger that is.
-
I think we've been thru this exact question before. I will be back when the AUD recovers. Can you ask Steve or Lily if they still see the lovely Noi or Meeaow ?
How are the hamburgers ?
-
If Jetstar wins best anything the survey is obviously flawed.
-
So what is happening at Steve-eo's ? Is Steve (from Arizona) being referred to as the new Big Mike ? The thread is becoming confusing. Are the hamburgers good ?
Does anyone know what happened to Big (fat) Mike ?

Can someone explain to me what the Bed Supper Club is ?
Up-market, it seems, but why ? What does it offer ?

Does anyone know what Bernard is doing now ? His columns went downhill in the last few years, but I always enjoyed him.
"nuff said.

Probably about 1997/98. Noel had it for a couple of years and Les had it for a few months before it was closed. Let me explain a king hit. This means a huge punch to someone who is not expecting it.
Les hit a big Aussie bloke who worked on the oilrigs. The big bloke, who lived in the apartments behind the bar, got up and beat the daylights out of him.
After a while the Aussie bloke amused himself by really beating up Les every now and then, just for fun, which is why he closed the bar and took off to Pattaya.

Patong history. Arthur (deliberatley) drank himself to death after losing his baby child in a tragic accident. I last saw Noel about six years ago, but he was in a bad way with emphysema - he was living in Kamala. Les was the violent time share drunk.

I used to buy "Viagra" in Myanmar (Kauwthang) for 25 baht each. I was told Thai customs would accept 20 as for personal use, but was never checked.....like the 70 baht cartons of cigarettes - only one allowed.
They work ! And I believe certain bar owners ( certainly not including me) could sell them to tourists at 400 baht a time.....
