  1. This is something I experience as well but not very often and eek has hit the nail on the head I deal with it in a similar way.

I always recall when I was young and my boss would very often go quiet and silent with his girlfriend who was always in the building it was obvious they hard argued, he was a nice guy and we got on well and we discussed the silent treatment and his explanation was that he did not want to say something in anger that he would regret, he said it doesnt matter how many times you say sorry for something nasty you have said it will never reverse the fact that you said it, and must have thought it to say it.

I am not suggesting that is the Thai way of thinking but it has always made sense to me when some one goes quiet on me.

  2. Time to post a strict Forum rule:

"8) Not to post extremely negative views of Thailand or derogatory comments directed towards all Thais."

This entire thread is on the verge of disappearing.

Its a good discussion why not just edit what you feel is OTT and let it continue, there is bound to be some one step over the line just because you have said you would delete it all from what I have seen so far..

  3. Thats right. A discussion about personal experiences in relation to Thailand is perceived as bitter if the person didn't prosper. I am putting Thailand behind me and looking forward to my families next giant step. My experiences here has been both good and bad (as it goes with life). I will take what I have learned and apply it to my next phase in life. Just because Thailand doesn't work for some people doesn't mean they are bitter. I would say that most people whether prosperous or not can take an objective look at the workings of Thailand and come to the conclusion that Thais shoot themselves in the foot time and again. It is unfortunate that we can not have a discussion about it without being considered bitter towards life.

Well I applaud you for that it is a good attitude to have and I am sure will see you well in your next adventure

  4. You want to open a business yet expect to be treated like a guest? Maybe herein lies the first reason you had problems.

it would have been great if i was treated as a native. it would have saved my business. sadly i was highly discriminated against on all levels because it was perceived that i had money based on the fact that i am a foreigner. i was not given the opportunity of becoming a native therefore i never was able to shed my guest status, as i am sure many of you are familiar with.

Must be great to have never had to work in thailand and spend all your time in bars and brothels like the "i love thailand " club,..expats in thailand are no more than extened holiday makers in the thais eyes, suits me as they are right and my holidays up, like i said, great for single guys, for families, or those that have to work,...nah,

If That was aimed at me then what an assumption, and a very wrong one, its not hard to see from your posts why you found doing business here hard! the saying comes into mind " a bad workman always blames his tools"

There are hundreds of successful companies here that are farrang owned, however they are all run I would imagine by people who take pleasure in adapting to their environment and succeeding in what they set out to achieve.

Having lived here 12 years and run a business that employed 45 Thai staff in BKK, dealing with companies ranging from small start ups to Thai quoted companies I and my partner always felt we were treated like our Thai counterparts, do you think that the problems you encountered are exclusive to farrangs? I can assure you they are not. If you want to do business here understand how things work and deal with it in the same way the locals do.

If you want your service industries (lawyers accountants etc)to treat you as you would be treated in your home country pay that little extra and hire a multinational with offices here.

I suggest most who fail here at any business do so because they fail to adapt to the business environment and mentality here. You want to be treated like a local in business then act like one and you will be.

This is my first hand experience and that of others my partner and I met during the 4 years we ran our company in BKK before selling it to a Thai competitor.

  6. they have seen what the monster Dollar juggernaut can do

Yet they crave the almighty $$$ above everything else. It always amazes me how easily daughters are sold into prostitution. The love of money disgusts me here. This is the country where everything is for sale.

Climb up and stagger out of the bar and run; you've spent too long in Soi Cowboy!

i used prostitution as an example because most readers could probably relate to it because it is so visible in Thailand. Have you ever gone across town in a taxi at night? The city is littered with massage and shower places as well as karaoke bars.

For me I saw how greedy Thais were when i started my business. It was doomed from the beginning with greedy lawyers, suppliers, immigration, dept. of labor, (the list goes on). I tried to be legitimate and it was my undoing. Also as a foreign employee at one point you get to see that a Thai doesn't smile as much when they have to be the one giving you money rather than receiving. I have heard very few farang financial success stories in this country (apart from foreign hired expats for multinational companies). It is not that I have spent too long in Cowboy, rather I have spent too long in Thailand. I am happy to announce that I am leaving in under a months time. I don't feel comfortable staying in a place that will not respect their guests. I'll be back for visits probably on a yearly basis to visit the in laws but I doubt I will live here again anytime soon.

quick edit: i realize that I am generalizing and there are lovely people in this country, however I would never ever recommend to a foreigner to open a business here.

  7. Do not forget if you get this from Immigration it takes about 3 weeks...
Since when? my last one a few weeks go in Pattaya was available to collect the following day

I have needed this paper 3x over the past 6 years, last one in September last year.. in BKK you fill in a Form pay 100baht for them to sent it EMS and the Lady tells you it will take 2 to 3 weeks, the one in September 2008 arrived on day 20... At the time I posted on here and there were a number of replies all appeared to take 3 weeks.

One of the benefits of living in Pattaya then I guess :)

Talking out of it as well

  9. Having just moved to the dark side decided to try cafe uno last night and just have to give Craig a plug, 4 of us, pasta, cumberland sausage and mash, gammon steak, and chicken jalfreezi, I would say we are not picky eaters but know good food and what we like, we could not fault any of the dishes except to say the portions were too big for us, however the pasta was so good we took it home for lunch today.

4 people who will definately be back, if you live on the dark side or even if not go have a taste, don't expect Mata Hari expect a great meal from a good menu at a price that seems impossibly cheap.

We dine out at a variety of places, ranging from Mata Hari, Mantra etc to the small Italian on Thappaya rd, our choices are based on the foodand what we are in the mood for, not the price, Cafe Uno is on our list. Try it if you haven't already

  10. These two roads are slower than using Suk now they have turned the lights on and made them one way, lets see if we can guess how long the lights stay operational for. Does anyone remember a few years ago the lights that were put on Thapaya Rd from Jomtien to the flyover? Chaos they lasted 3 days I beleive.

Switch off the lights make both sides 2 way, much more fun and usable.

  11. I have spoken to the senior engineer at TT&T today who informed me that the dark side is in the process of getting a new fiber optic link that will split the current load, the time scale is 2 weeks for completion. He showed me the map and the nodes that would be helped and it is most of the nodes on the East side of Pattaya.

I know him through a friend so he has no real reason to lie, but as we all know things don't always go to plan, however lets hope this does as the service is very intermitant for many out here at the moment.

  12. Elton John, Kylie Mynogue and Robbie Williams walking along the street, all of a sudden Kylie trips and her head gets stuck in a fence, Robbie turns to Elton and says "watch this", he lifts up her skirt and pulls down her pants and gives her one up the pooper, looking over at Elton he see's him grinning and looking on in anticipation, when Robbie has finished he says to Elton, "your turn", at which point Elton starts sobbing, "Whats wrong" he asks and Elton says "My head is to big to fit in the fence"

  13. those who stay permanantly and in many cases working on tourist visas or VOA for years on end will eventually be weeded out and life will be made harder for them.

I don't buy it. Fairly recently, it has become MUCH easier for those who want to stay without "proper" visas. You can now stay here indefinitely on double entry tourist visas from Laos, plus unlimited 30 day air entries, with NO DAY COUNTING. Not to mention the widespread use of ED visas that allow people under 50 to stay here for years by just studying a FEW HOURS a week! The trend is OPPOSITE of what many have stated ...

The recent so called "crackdown" on land border running is a mere triviality compared to the larger liberalization.

If immigration wants to catch illegal workers, catch them at the WORKPLACE, how hard is that?

Why can I see your posts? I added you to my ignore list a long time ago, oh well lets try again!
