  1. Does anyone have a kindle keyboard 3G ?

its the kindle with a full keyboard on the bottom ,

it has 3g and has a clunky web browser so you can slowly surf the internet , well at least you can in the USA and its FREE ,

Works OK for checking your email at dial up speeds , or look something up on Google ,

it is supposed to work worldwide on GSM 3G , just wondering if it works in Thailand and what service it uses , in the USA its At+t

Yes I got the old version of that model. Yes you can use it in Thailand, no problem but I don't know which provider it uses.

But be aware of that you have very limited amount of mbits free I-net and honestly I never tired but before I fitted Wi-Fi in my house, I got my books from Amazon via 3G.

One thing that's really good on it is the flip page (forward/back) bottoms on each side of the unit so you can read one handed with either hand which you can't on the paperwhite.

All in all I think the paperwhite is better because it's much smaller (same screen size) and the backlit screen is hard to beat for certain reading conditions.

  2. I just bought a 7" Grandtab GT-6 for my daughter, 2990 bath (3G model), you can buy them Wi-Fi only for 1990 bath.

Only 512mb of ram, rom 2 gb, mini sd card up to 32gb, screen res 800x480, 2 cameras.

Despite its pretty lousy specs I am a bit impressed with it and the Wi-Fi works much better than on my Onda tablet.

They are for sale in many shops on the phone floor in Tuk.Com in Pattaya and I was told they sell a lot of them.

I forgot to mention: Android 4.04

  3. But I miss my Pickled Onions MOST OF ALL. thumbsup.gif

    I agree.

I don't think there's anything anti-Thai about missing the foods you grew up with. A friend kindly offered to bring back a McSween's haggis. I bought a tin of Cullen Skink in the supermarket today. I don't feel that I'm denigrating the local cuisine by doing so.

Personally, I often find that the longer posts offer no more insight than the shorter, and need no more reply. Verbosity is not a merit in its own right.

    SC

The OP said specifically not to include food in this thread. So you are off topic. Why would you post information that the OP asked you not to post?

That really pisses you off eh? you keep on posting about it man, relax.

I think most long time expats miss their home country food and despite OP request not to include food here, poster's mention food probably because it's one of the first tings that pops up in their minds.

Many topics in here goes off topic or getting side tracked, even the moderators have given up.biggrin.png

  4. I am seriously thinking about buying one of those from Hong Kong:

Quad Core 8GB Android 4.2 Smart TV BOX WIFI Media Player 1.8GHZ XBMC + Air Mouse

    4150 bath is not bad

I didn't want to buy a smart tv for many reasons, my 50" HD Samsung plasma is a very good buy for 25K bath.

Checked many shops in Tuk.Com but no luck, most boxes comes with no Wi-Fi or they sell this stick type.

  5. To say you don't miss something from your home country is bull shit and I don't believe it.

How are you so sure of what's happened in other people's head?

You are a psychiatrist maybe? ...No...

Not only you know what's in other people's head you also know it is bullshit! If one day you'll be a politician, success guarantee coffee1.gif

Thank you very much for the advise but I think I will stick to engineering.

So are you saying that you don't miss anything??

If you don't, you are the first, people will always miss something unless they are completely crazy.gif.pagespeed.ce.dzDUUqYcHZ.gif

I would just like to reiterate my earlier point that there is NOTHING I miss sufficiently to cause me any lost sleep, or undue concern.

Of course I miss Fullers London Pride - but, there is nothing I can do about that so it only takes up any of my thought process when threads like this appear. Then I go back to my bottle of LEO or can of Angkor beer.

I agree with that, if you just think about what you miss the whole time you better pack your suitcase and move home.

As I wrote in my post I plan to spend some time home each year and I think that is the best solution in my case, I wouldn't like to spend a winter in Denmark (ever again).

  6. I been working for the same company for over 10 years and it's based in Singapore but I don't live there as I am working off-shore.

I spoke to many Singaporeans over the years and most all complain about the living costs and not been able to live in a house (owned or rented).

A 1/2 decent sized apartment cost big $ and a condo even more, a typical government ap. cost app. the double of my 9 mill baht house in Thailand.

Many lives in Malaysia but still work in Singapore and plans to retire in Malaysia where they can have a nice house with a garden very cheap compared to Singapore.

Many Singaporeans are stressed out and wants a slower pace of live.

Expats (white) earns an average of 200K US$ per year which have inflated prices of condos big time.

Expats Indians/Pakistanis normally have the low paid jobs and live together typically 8 persons in one room and earns perhaps 400-600S$ per month.

I noticed many very old Singaporeans are still working, moping the floors in the shopping centers or pushing luggage trolley's in the airport none of them smiling which is understandable.

It's without doubt a very good place to live if you are very rich but for the average person not really.

  7. I found Cambodia backward compared to Thailand and much less tourist orientated which might be a good thing.

I also found Cambodian working girls very reluctant to toot on ones flute which was very disappointing.

Would that be ALL of Cambodia or just the parts you visited.... which were ?

I recommend that you get your flute checked out because they managed a rootin, tootin tune on mine....

    clap2.gifcheesy.gif

Ahmm I also got mine fine tuned when I was there many years ago.whistling.gif

  9. I looked at the website you provided and maybe I'm missing something here but the prices on Kindle, Thailand seem much higher than on Amazon even after paying the taxes and shipping charges are you said would be most likely levied?

For example, on Amazon a basic Kindle is quoted at $69 (2100 baht ), whereas on the website for Thailand. its 5490 baht ?

A Kindle Paperwhite 3G on Amazon is $179 ( 5370 baht ) but on Kindle Thailand is 9,990 Baht ?

The importer pays tax and shipping and wants to earn money too, sooo.

The best is to have a friend coming to Thailand from the UK or the US and bring one over.

I head about one that managed to get one from Amazon without paying tax but if they ship with FedEx you will pay the tax.

If you can get them to ship with normal post you might get lucky or perhaps buy a used one from Amazon.

    Good luck with that.

  10. Make sure you get the "3G" option. This allows you to purchase and download books over the cellular network. Convenient if you do not have wifi or internet access.

How would you download anything without a Wi-Fi or internet option? Obviously you want to re-read what you wrote.

On the Amazon website if you don't take up " special offers " the basic device would be $89. The 3G version is $179.

Is it worth paying the extra ?

It depends, if you got Wi-Fi in your home and you are not spending a lot of time "on the road" a Wi-Fi model is enough.

My key board Kindle is 3G which is handy when I am overseas working so I can buy books from Amazon anywhere in the world and have them 5 min later.

My paperwhite only got Wi-Fi but I uses it only at home, dark bedroom and out on the patio in the evenings, a very good devise I must say.

Check Kindle Thailand, I bought my paperwhite there and they shipped to Pattaya free of charge. If you buy from Amazon US/UK you will likely be hit with import taxes (I got hit for about 2000 baht + shipping).

  11. I have TrueVisions gold package which have many HD channels but not many of which you are looking for.

The only sport channels I am watching is F1 but I noticed a lot of Golf stuff.

Expensive at about 16K baht per year think.

I also have Banglamung cable TV (free because I use I-net from them) but no HD channels and not a very good selection of interesting channels.

Now I just came across CTH which seems interesting and a promotion package deal for 600 baht per month, hmm maybe time to change.

  12. Thank you everybody that has answered so far. thumbsup.gif Based on the responses I'm getting the feeling there is more support for the Kindle itself than tablets?

Well it depends, everybody owns tablets nowadays and as somebody pointed out, you can use them for surfing the I-net, watching a movie or read a book play games and so on.

A Kindle reader can't be used for much else than reading a book, okay you can check your e-mail on it and go on-line to the Amazon store but that's about it,

oh forgot you can subscribe on different newspapers and magazines and get them on your Kindle.

My 9.7" Onda 792 tablet is not used much despite it's very good retina display, heavy and bulky but as I said my son can watch You tube kids movies on it.

I don't like the tablets so much, they run (mostly) on phone based OP systems and sliding your finger tip around and tap on a 10" screen fells a bit odd.

My 5" smart phone is okay for what it is, can surf the net and so on and I even read books on it sometimes when waiting at the immigration at the airport but not at home where the Kindle rules.

When I go overseas for 2 month work, my Kindle is loaded up with books and 60GB more books on my ext. hard drive, before I carried sometimes 10 paper books which was a bit of a nightmare.

If you read a lot of books, a dedicated e-book reader is the way to go and they are very cheap (in the USA) 69$ for the cheapest model and up to 179$ for a 3G paperwhite.

  13. A Kindle weight a fraction of a tablet and last for +2 weeks on a charge.

Kindle paperwhite is backlit and can therefore be used in a dark bedroom thus not disturbing my wife.

I own 2 Kindles and loves them and a tablet can never replace the real thing if you read a lot.

Book you buy at Amazon is yours for life, if somebody steals your Kindle you can get the books you bought there back anytime from your account.

Since it's so light compared to a tablet you can carry it in your hand luggage when traveling and even if you travel for days to your destination you Kindle don't need charging.

I have downloaded "illegal" books from the different torrent sites and have well over 60GB of books on my PC so I only buy from Amazon for specific books I really wants.

Conclusion: I have a tablet as well but for a avid reader like me the Kindle wins big time for reading and I love mine (more than the shitty tablet, my 4 year old son uses it).

  14. A car license is as the rest of the world only valid for cars and you will be fined if stopped by the police on your bike.

Easy to get a bike license, can be done is less then a day.

You have to be careful when riding a bike without a license, you will be at fault if involved in an accident and pay for damages to people and property which quickly can be very expensive.

  15. I bought 20 sheets of A4 photo paper from PowerBuy and they seems okay, IJG-230.

    A bit over 10 baht a sheet.

Regarding printers: Bought an Epson L210 (print, scan, copy) which I so far have been very happy with with very good photo color prints.

The good thing about it is the large tanks (4) and only 250 baht for 1 refill bottle which is very cheap compared to my old Epson that used cartridges type of ink colors so that was expensive to print A4 photos.

  16. Don't get me wrong I like walking but I find it too hot here...but yes a walk down there is ok for that purpose, but lets face it it's hardly somewhere to take a nice stroll or to take the kids is it, dirty foul place with the dregs of the earth inhabiting the place...but hopefully that is going to change....

Why not taking the kids? We often take our boy there for a stroll along the Beach Road like thousand other parents

and sometimes go to Central for some food and the kids play grounds on 3rd floor.

It used to be one of the coolest places in Pattaya during daytime with the breeze coming in and walking in shade , but not anymoresad.png,

  17. I've not followed this story but I was down there yesterday and was pleasantly suprised how clean and more spacious it all looked so it's a thumbs up for me.

Those that are complaining about the lack of shade I say so what? Who in their right mind walks along Pattaya beach front anyay? I've never done it and never will.

Well thank you very much, I like to walk there for exercise, lock the bike and then start walking and go back and pick up my bike.

Now not so good anymore on a sunny day due to the lacking shade so I only walk when clouded, it's kind of sad.

Anybody knows a nice place for walking around Pattaya? not interested in gyms.

As a temporally solution I walk around in our village after sun set but much nicer to take in the beach scenery.

  18. Always try sell your car privately, check one/two cars for the price of your car and take it from there.

The tents and 2hand car dealers obviously have to earn money too so that is not the way to go unless you are desperate.

I also got some 45k baht more for my car when I sold it privately compared to the offers I got from the dealers, even at the Ford dealer where I bought a new truck.

Yamaha Fino sold privately recently for 18.5k baht, offer from 2 dealers (buying a new bike as well) 15k baht and 13k baht.

  19. I read somewhere here on the forum that the Teana is the best ride of the 3 "top sedan" cars made here followed by the Accord and Camry last.

Try search in the English newspaper from BKK we are not allowed to mention the name of and I think there is a test there as well with same result.

A Camry Hybrid with about 300 kg?? of batteries must be a bit slow, it's like 3 heavy adults extra weight before you load it up.

Well okay I haven't tried one so I can't really comment.
