  1. It was over just as quickly as it started. Organisers yesterday cleaned up and removed rubbish from the actual track side of the road but there are literally thousands of plastic bags along with other assorted rubbish on the other side of the road where all the food stalls were located. This is now all blowing in the breeze and will of course eventually end up in the lake. Who is responsible for this cleanup? I can't believe it can be left like this.

  2. Be aware that the kitchen at Route CC on Soi Siam Country Club is closed 11th (as we discovered last night) and 12th so that the cook can attend his sons birthday.

    Just a heads up :)

  3. Goose's Fish and Chips - 2nd Road just before Soi 7 - the new place is open. I tried it tonight. Excellent - they have "local" fish and atlantic cod.

I had local, there was two choices and I had John Dory, huuuge comes with chunky chips (yes) or mashed potato and a choice of mushy peas, garden peas (yes) or baked beans. Also a thick slice of white bread and butter, and of course tartar sauce. It was a light batter (close to crumbed)

Couldn't quite eat it all - left some chips and most of the bread. I am still full 3 hours later. All that for Baht 195.

Drink prices were reasonable as well. They also do breakfast but I can't remember the price. Some other items on the menu were pies and bangers and mash, also pickled onions and gherkins available. There is Thai food as well.

    Highly recommended.

    Don't bother!

Significant other half and I ventured from the Darkside into to the bright lights of Pattaya for a rare glimpse of err... "civilisation" yesterday and on a whim decided to frequent Goose's based on a couple of recommendations here. Was very surpirsed that we were the only customers there seeing other places we saw were quite busy, but liked the clean, white table cloth look of the environment. They even turned the air con on for us when we arrived.

Ordered the Cod Fillet with chips and mushy peas (295 baht) and beer (70 baht) and significant other ordered some "special" that was whispered to her in Thai. While we are talking about ordering does anyone else get met with blank stares when you, as a Farang, order in Thai? Are they shocked that some of can speak really good Thai or??? It's funny everyone else seems to understand except waitresses. The police always understand me anyway....

Anyway I digress, within what seemed like too short a time we were served our meals - together too, which is rare in Thailand.

Verdict: Where I came from mushy peas were rich and slightly creamy in texture, these were watery and tasted like baby garden peas, squashed. (Maybe just my upbringing?) Chips were more like potato wedges and had that definite already cooked and kept warm taste and temperature. Slightly soggy. Cod fillet was thick, batter was crispy and tasty but fillet was tough and cold and uncooked in the middle. Very disappointing. Significant other who has had experience in this cuisine travelling & living with me for a few years overseas was also disappointed with her fish, although said it was cooked.

Thought about complaining but have found that generally nobody listens anyway, so will let our feet do the walking and not go back. If I'm going to pay that much I'll just go back to Shenanigans where the food always tastes good and you can have a game of pool after.

  4. For proof of identity ONLY the Australian Embassy in BKK will suffice. Had the same problem when near Chiang Mai and the Australian Consular Official there was not allowed to certify documents - only BKK. Take your baht with you too as it's over 900 baht for the first rubber stamp for each document and nearly 300 baht for each subsequent rubber stamp. Cash only. Although second time I needed to go a laconic (Australian naturally) counter attendant was too lazy to do a receipt so I scored them for free! She'll be right mate!

Park at the Shell petrol station about 50 metres past the embassy.

  5. Not the one on the left hand side of Sukhumvit just past Soi Siam County Club (heading south) and the bus terminal. I can't remember the name but it was recommended by the insurer and it took 4 visits and a lot of agitated Thai conversations for them to attempt to get things right. Absolutely hopeless!

  6. There again with the "Perhaps" and the "Maybe's" Because she is not screaming for help just let him go at her? You people make me sick. You're all cowards in my book. You do nothing to help a woman being beaten in public then you are as low as the man doing the beating. Perhaps he was trying to rob her and she was too scared to yell out. Perhaps she knew a further harder beating would ensue if she did. It is not "Thai culture" to beat your wife or gf in public, or private. It is simply wrong no matter where you are. You have been here so long you seem to have lost your moral objectivity.

Thank you to those who still give a shit about other people.

Touche' to the above quote. I get tired of the 'this is not your culture' line. So what? When is it right in any culture to beat on a female? I personally think all those who think it's "not my problem" are wimps. I hope you all sleep well each night (probably with the light on).

  7. Just got back from Laos after gettinjg a non O. Did all the sums before and even with my own car found it much cheaper on an organised run. Book, pay, give them your passport and photos and they organise everything. All the paper work (sign where they say after it is filled in) no waiting at the border either way, no queuing at the Thai Emabassy, all transport arranged, hotel, all meals. Just follow the tour leader and you walk through without any waiting at all. Easy if you have never done it before (like me) and especialy as you say you are a nervous traveller.

  8. I am waiting to see what Canon is going to do regarding a 60D, and also waiting for the Busch 7D guide to come out. Then I'll decide. I will say, based on the pics I am seeing on one of the other photo forums, I am VERY impressed.

My understanding is that the 7D is the replacement for the 50D...

  9. When I moved to Pattaya recently I rented a place on Pattaya Tai for a month while I located something permanent. Many nights after a good night out I stood on the balcony in the wee hours overlooking the road and watched the vendors of a nightime coffee stall wash down in front of their shop. Everything - and I mean everything - was washed/swept into the grated drain on the road, paper, plastic, you name it. What was too large to wash down on it's own was forced into the drain with a stick. And this is only one shop....

The irony was that while the lady was doing this each night the garbage truck would go by and collect the bags left on the footpath by other and more responsible shops.

  10. Not in Jomtien but we left our new Honda parked for 2 years in our condo carpark in BKK. Disconnected the battery and put a car cover over it and started it every three months on my wifes return from overseas for visa reasons. Honda service were always there within 15 minutes to start it for us free of charge and never had any problems with interence or damage. Great to come back and have your own car to hop into.

  11. Had a few bad experiences myself around Pattaya, including one on Pattaya Tai where the hairdresser screwed her nose up and put on a face mask before cutting (she was cutting Thai males hair without a mask). Made it quite obvious that my farang money was not welcome. Should have walked away but was too lazy and at the place I popped my head in before just down the street there were about 8 of them sitting in a circle on the floor eating their tom yum whatever. Sorry, we eat. You come backee.

Anyway, next time wifey drags me along to a place in the soi on the left side of the Tukcom building in Pattaya Tai about 50 metres up on the left. Nice, clean, polite, airconditioned and a good haircut. 200 baht. From memory I thing it was called Hair 2 Hair. Ask for Faye - she speaks pretty good English too.
