  1. I suppose the British Embassy are fed up of trying to help people suffering self-inflicted problems via drugs and alcohol. I don't really blame them. They wouldn't have time to do anything else if they helped every down and out Brit in Thailand. It's time that people learnt to take responsibility for their own actions and not expect the Embassy and taxpayer to help them out.

It's not just the British Embassy. Even in the UK, down and outs on the street don't get any help. They are left to fend for themselves. There just isn't enough cash to pay to help the vast amount of alcoholics and dug addicts in the UK, and probably also in other countries.

Where were family and friends? Shouldn't they be the first line of help? It's easy for people to criticise the British Embassy, but I don't see many stepping forward to offer to help these people. If you think this is so tragic, then why not volunteer your services to help out? Many on here have plenty of time on their hands. Maybe that time would be better spent offering some actual help to people instead of sitting in front of your PCs criticising everyone else.

One of their citizens was left rotting in a cell and they never stopped in to check on how he was doing? Sorry I don't agree. Disgracefull.

  2. Thais simply loath having to admit that one of them is wrong, especially when it is only a foreigner that has been the victim.

Utter nonsense - this is the result of a police force that has been living of the backs of honest Thai people for years.

Why do people persist in trying to make out that "THAIS" are some kind of lesser beings to themselves and then try to put a spin on everything they see to bolster up their own prejudiced views????

Oh really? Like the "police force" doesn't come from "honest Thai people"? Where do they come from then? Mars? A lot of "honest Thai people" only dream about becoming a VIP police and being able to screw everybody up from the position of power that they are denied in their life. And where does your theory that "people persist in trying to make out that Thais are some kind of lesser beings to themselves" come from? Cannot just make a true observation? You haven't been beaten up well in this country yet, have you farang? Or maybe .. you are not farang? Thai at heart perhaps? All those bad, prejudiced and "too rich" farang should go home to "their country" right?

Great post Notime. The fact that this story gets NO coverage shows that Thais see this as acceptable, normal behavior by their police. Where is the federal investigation into the coruption and abuse of power by the Pai department? None, just business as usual. what a joke

  3. What kind of background checks, psych evaluations do these guys have to go through before getting a badge? All we need to do is look at this guys photo to understand that there is a brain inside that can't be much bigger than a pea. It's obvious now that he has some issues that would have been uncovered by the evaluation process or any 'real' countries police force.

Send this scrawny little dirt bag to Calgary and let the boys there play a little hockey with his head.

  4. Funny... he kills a Thai and is sentenced within weeks. He kills a Canadian and two years later still hasn't gone to trial.:annoyed:

Pretty disgusting hey? After 4 plus years here I can see it for what it really is and will most likely finish up my contract and be gone. I just can't stand the bs anymore - the photo shows him wearing a Buddhist amulet and recently been to temple with the white string around his wrist makes me want to vomit. Petty people full of sh**

  5. Must of left all of the south out of your travel plans?

Farangs that live in Bangkok are the same as Thais that are from Bangkok. Ignorant about the rest of Thailand. I have been all over Thailand and I can a sure you that I have only met handful of people outside of Bangkok that don't like the Red side of the political problem here in Thailand. The Red side is the bigger side, whether they are the better side is not for me to say, because like most farangs that love to post their opinions and feelings on here about this topic, I don't hold a Thai Passport, therefore I don't have a say. The only thing I can say is. If they were to hold free and fair elections the red side would win and anyone who says different obviously hasn't been far outside of Bangkok.

  6. I am a knife snob and use expensive German knives. My wife uses Vietnamese cheapos and heck are they sharp!!! The only thing I don't like is that they are very light, I like a hefty knife for chopping and the like.

Knife snob as well but prefer lighter knives, Kikuichi knives are great, expensive but worth every penny!

  7. You can get along great with your Thai neighbors as a non-Thai or can be total disaster. It just depends on you and them. You just need to be prepared that they care a lot about what you would normally consider your own business. But the same would be the case in other Asian countries.

Little old lady next door will creep around in the yard, water our plants, open our window and put a plate of khanom on the table... As i will walk around in the buff inside my home sometimes she catches an eye full while peeping in the window :) hasn't stopped her yet though.

  8. The cleaning and support staff at my business made about 5000-6000 per month.

    This is about average.

I worked with a high salary of 240000 per month. This is ~mid class in Thailand.

Thais usually need a university degree for this level of salary

Avg Costs room: 3000-5000 per month (usually shared)

electric per month 2000+ (usually shared)

food + drink = 40-60 per meal for Thai

Bangkok numbers might be higher but not necessarily.

If the girl is pulling 20000 without lifting a finger and her boyfriend lives outside the country then the Buddha has smiled upon her.

240,000 isn't mid class it is the top end salary for Thai people.

yes I think he means 24,000. which would not be a high salary but correct for a middle class family income.

  9. To put it in prospective 300baht a day is the normal wage of a Thai. my wife worked in a computer factory ,6300baht a Month.

Thats a good paying job but I expect very hard work.

    Former gf,

hotel receptionist, 150bht a day (good English)

Hotel cleaners 100bht a day (no English)

    [...]

Most of the people posting on here seem to have no idea about Thai incomes and business costs, I guess their gf/wife lies and pockets the extra cash, too many white buffalo in Thailand. Any normal Thai telling me they get 10k+ a month and I assume they are most likely a sex worker (unless they show pay slip or are clearly Teachers, etc.).

Those salaries are unbelievable low unless your former GFs were teenagers or Burmese immigrant workers. Nearly all hotel receptionists are paid 7K - 20K basic salary (potentially + tips + commissions + periodic bonuses), and it doesn't make much difference what class of hotel it is - at budget hotels there is a lower staff : guest ratio so the fewer staff can be paid almost as much as 3* and 4* hotels (and sometimes more, with longer shifts and more responsibilities per staff member).

correct but wasting your time - he/she (bloke but profile listed as female?) knows it all already, thinks 90% of Thais are uneducated retards, etc etc. You can't argue with someone that is the supreme expert in all thing Thai in his own mind.

  10. Learning the language of the country you live in has to be the number one priority for any expat.

(I apologise profusely for not making joining TV my first priority)

I can speak, read and write Thai .... to some extent ......

If only more would do this, maybe the Thais wouldn't consider us all quite so daft.

I think we can both agree

Those who can't understand the language will have an entirely different experience of a country from those who can ..... maybe you are right, ignorance is bliss.

    PS

Small correction, I rarely speak Thai, but understand Thai quite well, much more to my advantage to blend in with all the other buffalo.

The Thai ladies talk about all sorts of amusing stuff while I am around, almost as if I wasn't there. My wife and daughter never let on either.

I tell her what the neighbours wives say about her when she leaves the room, she enjoys very much.

Yes agreed that expats should learn the language and Thai is really not all that hard. Reading and writing Thai is a different story.

  11. Thais seem to dislike everyone ..... but mostly each other, they don't appear to have lasting friendships.

(Yes a wild generalisation, all I can say is from what I have seen)

I pretty much keep to myself and let them make up any stories they like.

My two nearest neighbours are white males with ex-bar girl Issan ladies, the lades are clearly former sex workers, the men claim different.

The ladies lie all the time about everything, whenever I listen to them, it is to listen to a lie.

The American guys wife is having an affair (or Thai husband), she goes outside to take phone calls from the lover .... doesn't think I can understand.

(she also beats her 2 year old son with a stick in the garden, <deleted> is wrong with these people)

My wife refuses to speak to the other women (for some reason)

Last year I lived way out in the wilds, only 2 other houses within earshot (100 percent Thai).

1 house had loud karaoke playing all night on a regular basis.

1 house the guy would beat the living daylights out of his wife/gf, she would scream for hours as if being tortured to death.

(I did suggest to my gf that she call the police ...... "not my father mother" was the reply ... or in English "not my business")

I always find my best neighbours to be those who totally ignore me.

Don't move, the next place will be just the same.

Don't worry about police reports, Thais love to make police complaints, the police write it down and file it.

Your experience in this country is clearly different than mine. I don't know how long you have been here but joined TV only recently? You speak Thai (you say) You know everything about Thailand, peoples salaries and what a "normal" Thai is. You are my favourite type of expat :)

  12. So what is a "normal Thai"?

Thais who left school at age 12 or earlier, cleaners, shop workers, office staff, farm workers, about what 90 percent of any population do for a living.

Your thinking your Sous Chef on 68k a month is a normal Thai sort of supports my theory about posters not knowing .... etc.

If you double my wage estimate for people living in Bangkok (big city pays more) then you can see my ball park figure is correct.

yeah I think he is normal same as the last 4 sous I had all with over 30k a month salary even my dish washers/stewards make over 10k with the service charge again they are "normal" and are Thai, matter of fact the last 4 hotels I have worked at in Thailand NOBODY made under 10k a month and nothing abnormal about them. I know what average salaries are for different jobs here in Thailand as the wife has friends who are nurses, teachers, accountants all of which are "normal" Thais and all making OVER 10k a month. I think your making a judgement from your circle of Thai friends. Sure about half the country is in agriculture and have not much income but I wouldn't lable accounts, sales, postmen, nurses etc as being abnormal what do you think they are if not normal Thais? We do have these professions in the west right are they not normal Brits or normal Americans??

Im not in BKK btw the salaries I mention are from Samui and Phuket.

  13. To put it in prospective 300baht a day is the normal wage of a Thai. my wife worked in a computer factory ,6300baht a Month.

Thats a good paying job but I expect very hard work.

    Former gf,

Chraper solution rent a shop and start your own salon make her work.

Probably 200000 to open decorate and pay the rent for the first few months while it gets started.

    Pals gf,

hairdressing salon, rental 1,900bht a month (bedroom, living room, salon)

    setup fees approx 7,000bht

    income 100bht a day, open from 9am untill 9pm for 7 days a week.

7/11 pays 7,500bht a month but you need to be a highschool graduate, so most Thais excluded.

My next door neighbours wives, clearly ex-bar girls from Issan, always boast to my wife about the money their husbands give them, one is given 50k a month by her schoolteacher husband who is clearly scraping a living hand to mouth, the other claims her husband (unemployed and about to return to home counrty to try and earn some money) gives her 100k a month. Why do they even tell such silly lies?

So what is a "normal Thai"? Really, you think any Thai making over 10k a month is a sex worker? ridiculous! and you claim othesr here don't know what they are posting about in regards to Thai salaries :) ? I can assure you that my Sous Chef (68,000 per month) is not a sex worker, all my Chef de parties (15,000 + 7k service charge) are not sex workers, my wife (45,000 + service charge) IS a sex worker but I'm the only client as far as I know :D

Sure Thai ladies will inflate what they are getting = more face, I'm so valued by my man.

  14. Thaksin is afraid of jail - he's a coward, and all cowards are weak in the face of real adversity. Look at the Red leaders (With the exception of Nattawut and Jatuporn - the only 2 who didn't run away)

:) How about the real 'leader of the red gang" Khun Conor? :D he's still hangin tough haha

  15. after seeing so many expert reply which is so true, i have been here for 4yr, i'm young, affordable over here and owns company and a foreigner over thailand, been travel to a few different country n most of the time in thailand, hear so many stories which is so dam_n true, did experience some of it but not too much. because i study alot on them. lots of liar around and cheater, corrupted personnel(not to direct but everyone knows) as long you remember this, 20k staying with her + household food n rental and kid, i think it's ok, even 25k. but not too much, since you are staying with her and she need to give her kid study and her mum, rental and bill to pay. and food which is around 3k to 5k per month. (estimated for long term) it's around there.

but never buy house & car under her name, register a company and places it under your name. you can do whatever you like and not worrying about no house to stay when you are broke.

motorcycle e.g mio/fino is too cheap so dont bother to put under your name but of coz if you are riding big harley den place it under your name too. can cost 300k haha.

for me 25000 is just a few day. because i'm a foreigner. i spend more on food that i want to eat (seriously not sure why but once i start to shop in 7-11 i can spend 600baht-1k over a day. eating with friends, travel around in taxi, some drinking in rca will cost about 15k baht per day. but i do think that i spend too much becoz i pity alot of thai are earning just 10k o 30k per month and i'm spending their monthly salary just like 1 or 2 day, tourism really bring alot of income to them and they are losing income daily due to stupid curfew.

and i'm opening a cafe in bkk, i'm gng to employ pretty waitress and aunty cooks and some dish washer and cleaner. they do a job well, i will reward them well. some of them deserve it. others don't

Isn't it strange how there are some posters you take an instant dislike to ?

    Irrational really.

haha I had the same reaction but mostly due to the fact that buddy is spending 25,000 in just a few days on food because "he's a foreigner"?? some aunty cooks :) and pretty waitresses eh?

  16. Just pay her what the girls in your home country get paid to be a girlfriend.

:) depends Vancouver gals could end up costing more than 20,000 a month

but yeah um 2 kids (that are not yours), random temper tantrums, complains... these "extras" are not in high demand back home so he should get a 100% discount considring he already pays her rent.

I also don't think she was clearing 30k a month at the beauty salon or she would have never left it.

  17. Non Australian readers should be made aware of the Aussie rules in cases like this.

An Irish immigrant who happened to be a world record holder, would be cassed as an Aussie 5 minutes after leaving the airport. On the other hand if he was just an ordinary mick, who 30 years later robbed a bank (or got up on a red stage in Bangkok), well he is just a moronic Irishman.

    I came to Australia 30 years ago, fortunately I haven't robbed a bank...but I'm still reagarded as a Pom

    What is a Pom?

Seems we are destined to be named after fruit: In Thailand we are Guavas, in Oz we are Pomegranates and in America/Canada we are Limeys :) (of course the Thailand one is just a coincidense right?)

I was told as a nipper that POM was either due to the letter on the prison uniforms (though I would have thought that would be POC or POHM - Prosponer of the Crown/His Majesty) or (more likely) the fact that Cook discovered if his men ate citrus fruit it warded of Scurvey.

    I'm feeling a bit fruity :D

In Canada sometimes called a cake :D

  18. So this brand of photo equipment cannot be serviced in Thailand?

The shop you bought at it (for 178,000 THB) does not offer any after 30 day service...? Why you would pay such money for items having no service option (other than Japan)?

If i was gonna pay that kind of money for equipment i'd be dam_n sure to know where to get it serviced in the event of a problem...

For the VAT problem i think you are right to be outraged, if you show them the receipt that you purchased it in Thailand paid VAT and most certainly should adjust the tax.

    P.S. FedEx sucks anyways.

I sent a package to USA with Fedex it got returned because FedEx f*ked up their customs forms. And i got charged import tax for the returned package, and Fedex tried to charge for return shipping....

Took months of whinging at them before they finally paid restitution.

Yeah I gave up on FedEx and others and just use the Thai post service when sending overseas it's not only much much cheaper but seems to get there faster? No complaints.

I agree when spending that much money here it's best to get all the details before to avoid this frustration. Soory man but maybe take a visa run/short holdiay to Japan and have it fixed there.
