  1. The miserable people would come as a surprise too.

Unless of course the Thai person is used to being around the bitter and twisted segment of Farang society in Thailand, then they would think that everyone is as miserable as the ones they know in Thailand, heaven help us. :o

Yes. They also have the pain of witnessing drug use and alcoholism, and if they date a farang, spousal abuse. These are things which do not exist in kind-hearted Thai society. Its like when Adam and Eve left the garden of Eden

  2. Ive never been able to understand this phenomenon. Rich parents pay someone with no education to raise their children for them. The fact that they are wealthy suggests that you are educated, therefore, how do they come to this decision? You cannpt go to the Phrom Pong area without seeing this. Half the time, the nanny will be chatting wildly with another nanny while the children walk behind them. You even see the farang children speaking degrees of fluent Thai and Isaan. Why do people have children if they have no interest in actually raising and caring for them?

My kid (Thai kid, Thai parents) spends plenty of time with the nanny, but without a doubt also spends more time with his parents than well... likely most families on the planet. We just choose to enjoy not being tired/grumpy/overworked. I'd wager that you don't do all the work on your car everytime it's due for a checkup at 10,000 kilometers either. Some other benefits...

-the wife doesn't have to be a full time mom when she's hauling around another 10+ kgs. of water + baby (Heng Junior's sibling on the way).... I've seen plenty of people have to do exactly that, and IMO it directly impacts on the second child's development

-they get first hand contact with someone from the complete opposite side of the socio-economic spectrum and thus get to see close up what happens when one is disadvantaged in terms of education and financial planning over generations

-you don't have to get poop and urine on your hands / and baby food on your clothes everyday for several years to bond with your children... I think that's mostly wishful thinking. A few times a week is plenty (and for myself, I think HJ enjoys "sports and play" time with me more than "making sure all the feces is cleared from your butt crack" time)

But yes, there are types as well who don't spend much time with their kids... and *shock* did you know there are people from all nationalities that send their kids to boarding school and use these things called "daycare centers?"

It hardly means that all or even most people with nanny's or who went to military school don't know or have a close relationship with their folks.

    :o

that's pretty much not what i am talking about. neither is the nanny that accompanies mommy and caries the groceries home. if you live near emporium or spend a lot of time around there you will know what i am talking about. it is a simple observation that the farang children are being looked after much more like the way the Isaan nanny would look after her own children (laughing at them when they put a bag over their head) when she is outside the house and out of your view.

how often does the nanny leave the home alone with your son?

  3. jdnasia,

Come on, you are just taking out your insecurities about yoruself on me in regards to me pointing out that you are completely dellusional in your endless support and unwillingness to criticize anything the PAD has ever done. So now you will try to pick points with me in any topic to scratch that itch. Lets just agree to disagree and avoid each other.

THIS thread is about someone that thinks he knows how other people should raise their kids (and that yelling in a theater is acceptable) not about your silliness elsewhere :o

    What I said:

"Also, for those of you with teenage farang kids in high school and middle school here, can you pretty please tell them to Shut the F@## up in the movie theaters? I had to embarrass a couple of them the other day"

Where did you get yelling from? Did you invent it in that confused little head of yours?

  5. so when a group of kids are yelling to the next group of kids in a different row in a theater and ruining the experience for the rest of the audience, and I tell them to stop, I am embarrassing myself?

    Yes

    yes

    Completely agree

The point about the farang children speaking Isaan was not so much about their balance between learning English and Thai as it is proof that they are spending an overwhelming amount of time with the paid help.

Look at how many wealthy and educated Thai children are in the exact same positions? Are you saying it's a problem for the farang children? and whys that!?

I am guessing you are just a troll, but the point is that wealthy educated intelligent people do not give a flying fuc_k about their children to the point that they are speaking the nanny's language. This is common everywhere and not something easily understood. Why have children if you are not willing to raise them yourself?

Its no surprise that these same kids grow up into little asshol_es (your words to describe yourself).

But please do explain why its wrong to ask someone to stop talking in a theatre. The fact that you refused to stop talking as a teen and weren't embarrased when it happened says alot about you as a human being. Did Mommy and Daddy not pay enough attention to you?

  6. Not too many things in the shock category as most of us travel back and forth. Um, I like that the automatic postal machines at the USPS actually work, unlike here... Is that a shocker?

Not too many Thai explorers, but if you compare plain jane Thais (and even the spoiled elite) who prosper abroad to foreigners (not counting the Chinese and Indians of course) who prosper here, it's no contest. Most foreigners give up after a relatively short struggle or spend their existence treading water here.

    :o

Could that be because Farangs have more limitations in what they can or can't do workwise and stricter immigration and labour policies than Asian settlers in Europe?... Or is it that Thai people are on the whole more worldly, better educated and more adaptable to working in a foreign country then westerners working in thailand ?

Haha! Seriously Heng, let's handicap Thai's trying to open a business in Canada as badly as Thailand does to foreigners and THEN see how well they do, you really see things in a strange light don't you?

Sorry but you are wrong here. Yes, laws are easier in the West, but Asian success rates has much more to do with their strategy. First off, the are rarely a solo player, as opposed to a team. Most Asian businesses are family businesses. There is no unity in business for farang. That is how immigrants grow wealth, they stick together and save and reinvest. That is the same reason why African Americans are poor, they have very weak family units. They also tend to immigrate with the sole goal of making money, as opposed to going on holiday and falling in love with a Thai bird and then deciding to open a bagel shop/bar. There are also often already established immigration populations in the various Western cities where they can run a business, whereas farang basically have no unity or community in Thailand (besides streets of farang operated bars and pubs.

  7. In the USA there is always the running joke about how nobody wants to date Asian men, except for Asian girls who are not brave/mean enough to make their father want to kill himself by screwing a white guy. Quick, name an Asian male movie star who does not do karate. Therefore, I would imagine the hiso Thais going to school in the West would feel the same sort of insecurity that old farang feel when they go home - nobody is interested in them on a physical level, as opposed to Thailand where they are the man.

Most of the stuff listed in this thread is not about culture shock as it as about your partner not being the sharpest tool in the shed. Just saying.

Please, do a better job raising your kids here inbetween all your "working late" nights.

    aren't you just a delight?

why is it wrong for a child raised in thailand to be fluent in thai, farang or otherwise? And how does having a lesser educated nanny equate to ignorance or neglect?

i think the problem here is your own predjuice and snobbery.

and why are you focusing on farang children? i have heard many a noisy thai teen.

I suspect you are just a miserable git. focus on your own children.

Hmmm... Why send your kids to schools with educated teachers to teach them, why not let the janitor teach them? Level of education of the person raising the child has no bearing on the person the child will turn into, right?

  10. I am sure this must of comed up before, but i am fairly new to this. So i just have to ask what you guys think of this "Black Man" toliet brush , mops, etc etc????? What is that about? i am not black but still offended by this, ay more racist comments about thais, pls feel free to post>

    Thanks

(It actually has a picture of a black "slave" looking man holding a duster etc) WOW :D

Some people come here because its not so PC as the west.

Bingo. If the West we are not allowed to make fun of people for being fat or disabled or old or black or a minority. That is whats great about Thailand. Also, in the West girls have financial options and are less prone to prostituting themselves!

Uh,i'd probably give making fun of disabled people a miss,it's one thing to be a minority,or black or even old,but handicapped people deserve all the protection they can get.I don't understand the statement in red,how does that relate to racism? :o

An integral part of living in a third world country for many farang tv users is being able to feel like they are better, or higher socially than others.

  12. in the usa, black people were slaves. in thailand, most of the menial workers are dark skinned. so i guess that is the marketing angle of the product, which is not to say that its Ok in my book, but just to let you know where they are coming from. i think if you are dark skinned or african at some point you just have to accept that your appearence is considered undesirale and move on with your life. you cant get mad at every little thing like this.
