  1. According to the Government's Beach Index, based on water samples and various other criteria, Pattaya and Jomtien beach rate 3 of 5 (moderate). The beaches on Koh Larn get a 4 (Good), the beaches on Koh Samet get 4's and 5's (very good). Bang Sare, south of Na Jomtien is getting a 3, the water is not that good down there as they are not connected to the treatment plant.

Data from some water samples collected 30 March 2010, I'm not sure about the exact locations for theses samples. There were a number of tests done, only the categories where high values were flagged are listed here:

_________________________Nitrate Phosphate Total coliform Free collection coliform Enterococci

    Jomtien (central)_________15.3_____6.7___________9_____________20_________________________45

    Pattaya (sailing club)____66.8____11.3__________70_____________52_________________________51

    Pattaya (Grand Palace)___164.3____12.8__________49_____________14_________________________33

    Pattaya (Pak klong)_______14.0____12.2_________240____________104_________________________43

    Koh Larn___________________2.0_____6.0__________17_____________<1__________________________6

    Naklua (market)___________16.3___196.7_______92000____________220_______________________1600

So for bacteria it looks ok to go for a swim in Pattay or Jomtien as long as you stay clear of the northern end of Pattaya beach and Naklua. Best is of course to get out to Koh Larn or Koh Samet.

All data from Pollution Control Department: http://www.pcd.go.th The Beach Index with ratings for 195 beaches in Thailand can also be found there.

  2. weather from laos . malaysia , cambodia or myanmar the import limit of ciggaretes into thailand is 200

What's the weather go to do with it? :)

Ok, I'll break the mould. Although you're dick, op, it's clear the system stinks and is all about the money, as it always is. The powers that be don't give smeg about the 'smuggling' aspect or they'd haul his arse in jail. For the sake of tourists and tourism, how about simply confiscating the cigs and perhaps issuing a fine that is more proper and not taking the piss? If he had a suitcase full he's a smuggler. A carton or two extra for a legal thing... c'mon, it's all a bit childish, eh, what what?

So what other laws do you suggest we should break when we feel like it, and who should decide how much you could bend a law until it would be considered a crime?

  3. "Individuals found to be in possession of smoking tobacco (includes cigars) in excess of 500 grams, and without duty stamps affixed, will be fined 4,675 baht per carton (10 packs). "

If you smuggle anything they will calculate the fine on all cigarettes, no duty free allowance for smugglers.

4 cartons times 4675Baht is 18,700Baht, same as they fined you.

  4. Obviously this construction is taking a long time to ensure that the work done is of top class and to best practices. This will provide us with a first class road without pot holes for many years to come. :)

(well, at least for a few months until they decide that they should have buried the unsightly power cables while they were at it and dig it up again)

  5. Got the ALC HBO and Discovery channels but they're all over the place.

Took about 15 minutes this morning to sort everything into the order I want (1-10 Movies, 11-16 Entertainment, 17-27 Edu, 28-30 News - I'll wait to Saturday to sort the sport). Back to normal now.

Strange that your ALC channels were all over the place. Mine are at channel 151-157 but with "E16 Service is currently scrambled"

  6. Yes....use the search function on TV to find the details, but issued from the BiB in BKK, takes 7 days if you havent been a naughty boy...LOL

    Thanks, that sounds good.

I did several searches before posting but could not fhe relevant information. Would appreciate if someone had more information, like where to go in Bangkok and what documents are needed. If it could be done in Pattaya so much better.

As far as I know it can only be done in BKK and the BIB head office, let me have a look and will post the link or info

Thanks. I did find the link with all the instructions and a map of the location in Bangkok.

  8. This is a topic I have often pondered myself. On recent trips to Pattay I have stayed in the Diana Inn on 2nd Rd. Opposite the restaurant there is a truck parked-up that is monitoring air quality. Does anyone know if the results of this exercise are available on-line ?

    Londo

The bus is probably a temporary site. You can get information from PCD operated fixed sites around Thailand at:

    http://www.pcd.go.th/AirQuality/Regional/G...fm?task=default

From this graph it looks like it has been pretty bad the last week:

  9. I've bought books and cd's from Amazon and they shipped to me here in Bangkok

Like I said, it varies, same with ebay some ship here some don't.

What I'm looking for is large online stores or brick and mortar stores with a good online store that ship to Thailand.

The problem with Amazon and Ebay is that you never now if they ship until you have completed the order and the sellers are usually not able to deduct sales tax. The tax deduction alone can sometimes pay for the freight.

  10. I have looked at a number of online shops in Europe/UK that sell appliances and have so far not found any that ship to Thailand. Most of them only ship to their own country or in some cases to other EU countries.

In most cases I do my online shopping on US sites as just about all of them ship worldwide, have lower prices and no tax. The problem is if you want to by electric appliances that need to run on 220V/50Hz or if you are looking for brands or items that are not available in US.

Have anyone used or seen any good online shops located in EU that will ship to Thailand and preferable deduct sales tax??

  11. I had a tennis elbow for several months, very painful. Did nothing about it except for resting it but it actually just got a bit worse.

Then one day I had a Thai massage and while the girl massaged my shoulder blade, on the same side as my bad elbow, I could feel that the pain suddenly just disappeared.

I could have sworn that the pain was in the elbow but pain is funny that way and the actual cause of the pain can and often is somewhere else. Anyway, this was several months ago and the pain never came back.

As swimming move your shoulder blades around it makes sense that this could ease the pain but have someone give your shoulder a massage. For me the pain disappeared after 5-10 seconds massage in the right spot!!

  12. Lots of info on root canal and cancer on the web, give google a try. Not a doctor myself but with all that info there could be some link there.

Dr. Thomas Rau, who runs the Paracelsus Clinic (cancer clinic since 1958) in Switzerland recently checked the records of the last 150 breast cancer patients treated in his clinic. He found that 147 of them (98%) had one or more root canal teeth on the same meridian as the original breast cancer tumor. His clinic has a biological dentist section where all cancer patients, on reporting in, have their mouth cleaned up first -- especially all root canal teeth removed.

There are about 24 million root canals done in the U.S. alone every year. They were proven deadly disease agents in 1925 in a study by Dr. Weston Price and 60 prominent researchers. That study has been suppressed ever since by the ADA and the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). Read the book "Root Canal Cover-Up" by George Meinig, DDS, FACD for the full story. Dr. Meinig was an endodontist for 50 years. He helped found the AAE in 1943. His book is a mea culpa (apology) to the thousands of patients whose health he ruined doing root canal fillings. He discovered the Weston Price research only after he retired in 1993. His book was published first in 1994 and he has lectured widely since then trying to alert people to this danger to their health.

  13. Why not just ask in the shop selling the paintings, I'm sure they get requests to ship paintings and do this all the time. They should have the tubes and all other packing material required and also know by what means the shipping should be done.

  14. Minimum 7% duty, probably another 10-20% duty plus you will probably have to buy a step down transformer, 220 to 110v, to use it in Thailand. Then there is the freight cost.

If it's a Samson, you can buy it in Thailand, they also have great service and spare parts. A bit more expensive but all included not a big saving to buy from US.

  15. Sheryl,

Looks like the pump is not the problem as opening other taps have no affct on the flow.

To add a restrictor to the cold water flow could possibly help you as it will then reduce the affect of the cold water slowing down the hot water flow. A thin washer with a small hole fitted where the cold water enters the faucet will do the trick.

To disconnect one of the heating elements, looks like there are two, is easy and could possibly help as you then could have the hot water tap open more for a better flow that would stop the heater flow control to shut it off. Problem is that the flow is already very low when fully opened.

Looking at the pictures of the faucet it looks like you get less than half the flow even if fully opened so that would probably be the first thing to change. Not easy to check the flow in the hardware store but bring the old one with you and by blowing in to the faucet you can get a good idea by comparing different faucets.
