  1. "While acknowledging that the vast majority of tourists enjoy incident-free holidays in Phuket, he went on to raise the issue of a new "motorbike scam" being reported.

In this newest way to cheat tourists, unscrupulous operators rent out motorbikes to foreign tourists and then arrange for companions to steal them overnight, he said.

The foreigners are then forced to pay the price of a brand-new motorbike, even if the stolen vehicle was old, he added."

This scam is not new, it's been going on for many years. Maybe it's on the rise in Phuket. I always ask if the fee includes insurance before I rent.

The insurance only covers miner damage. I have heard 50,000baht. It will not cover the cost of a new bike. The insurance is often just another scam.

Always rent from a trusted source which list should include the hotel where you are staying. The main problem is the punter thinking he/she can source a better deal at lower cost round the corner. Thailand is definitely a 'buyer beware and you get what you pay for country'..........

  2. This story is upside down. how about

The 'bad guy' from Sweden is tracked down, arrested and thrown in a cell ( I went to the police station).

I had to pay... ( to buy better food )

There he is detained until the Swedish authorities are informed and a request is made that he be repatriated ( after 12 days an official from the embassy comes)

He is taken filthy to the airport and flung on a plane

In this scenario the international criminal justifies an arrest, holding centre extradition. Of course the published story is an innocent caught up in a hostile environment. What did he expect: the embassy to put him up in the Intercointinental and provide money for a trip to designer men clothiers.

I may be wrong of course...

  3. All the posts above make sense. What does not make sense is the original arguement that the word human means noble heart and...

"She said humans are noble beings compared to other animals, and should, therefore, behave appropriately"

I cannot see what this has to do with condoms. The discussion more appropriate to the comment would be " are humans noble or are they not?" Its idiotic to give someone a name and then expect them to live up to it.................on the other hand a boy running the restaurant opposite our house was given the name lipstick at birth. He became a ladyboy..

  4. I saw a Thai guy electrocuted while up a pole. He was thrown clear and his colleagues put a corregated iron sheet on him for ten minutes. Then he got up and went back up the pole! amazing

Anyway I am glad to see that the girls local to the accident now wear rubber shoes........er what about non locals?

Why is there no reference in the article to the owner /manager of the socket. What is his/her comment? Maybe that was the bit about now wearing shoes..................classic. Mai ben rai. Dont make a fuss.

  5. Given the state electrical wiring here I bet the plant:

    Would not be grounded

Have twisted wire together making all the junctions.

And instead of running several big fat cables for transmission they would run 37,000 small ones

    ;-)

Sorry to single you out sir but your post stands out as being one of the most idiotic posts out of many similarly bad ones.FYI Generators don't work if they are not grounded. EGAT's power generation and transmission system is built and maintained to international standards. Have you ever been to a power plant in Thailand? And last but not least big fat cables comprise lots of "little ones" they are called strands. The problem in Thailand is all of the distibution systems are run over head and hence are vulnerable to trees falling on them, rats chewing the cable insulation etc. Actually MEA in Bangkok have started trying to put distribution systems underground by building cable tunnels under some of the Klongs using tunnelling techniques to avoid digging up roads but it will take decades and huge costs before it is done.

If you are going to get personal about other posters I suggest your submissions are squeeky clean, well thought out and devoid of misinterpretation.

You say EGAT build and maintain to international standards. Would those be the ones adhered to by Russia Japan and USA ( USA just missed a nuclear meltdown the other two are rather more infamous. Perhaps you have heard of them)

  6. The last one of those at Bt790 for a month looks ideal. However, it says it is automatically renewed each month so is it saying that it is a 12 month contract or can I cancel after a month (which is what I want). If so, how do I cancel ?

Typically pre-paid services run month-to-month. If you do not have enough balance remaining on the renewal date the plan would be cancelled automatically. Or you could contact DTAC to cancel:

    dtac call center - dial 1678 (3 baht/call, including 7%VAT)

    • Express Mobile Service (free of charge)

    • IVR Automated Service - dial *1004 (free of charge)

    • Online services - visit http://wap.dtac.co.th/happy

Always cancel. I had a special deal contract for one month, paid, and cancelled the auto renewal, when I took it out. The cancellation didnt go through and I was still paying months later..........no refund.

  7. Are all three incidents linked.

According to the locals - yes.

The National Park where the incidents happened is reportedly haunted. :o

The first crash was flying into the mountain in bad weather.

The second cash going to collect the bodies of the poor victims of the first crash and then flying into the same mountain in bad weather.

The third crash was mechanical failure whilst on the way to collect the bodies of the victims from the second crash.

All three crashes were less than 50 kilometers apart.

    Spooky.

(Details are from the Bangkok Post 25.7.11)

The original storey in the Bangkok Post quoted a local who said that the valley in question had difficult and dangerous wind patterns. That is not a quote but something similar. Sounds like the lake district UK. A dangerous area for sudden squalls down drafts etc

Surely the pilots etc knew of this. Or was the general causing disruption?

  8. We need to release brake on progress in Thai technology

Forget it, it's inbetween their ears. Their phobia is 'development means giving up old traditions' and it's old traditions that are used by the government and 'spiritual' leaders to control the stupid masses.

I saw a movie about a teacher wanting to open a school in Africa. The headman cut a notch on the doorpost of his hut and said no one taller than this ( age about 10) can go to school. He didnt want any challenge to leadership in his lifetime.

  9. I have lived here 6 years now and it is certainly no never ending holiday. I would not want to live in a village up north because you will be in total isolation.

I love it here but life is what you make of it but it all boils down to yourself. You can be happy or miserable anywhere. I just think its easier here, but no not a holiday because things will become normal not like on a Holiday.

I do not know why everybody prefers the south to the north I for one cannot stand the south, if you want to see the true thailand head north my man. That is the real test about living in thailand, ask your self is it he birds and the booze you like or is it the thai people, culture, the food. Only you can answer this question. I am going to my thai wifes village tomorrow, (loei) cannot wait the most beautiful part of thailand for sure.

    Malcolm

Sounds to me as though you dont actually live in Loei but only visit.

I lived in Patong for a year and grew to hate the Muay Thai loudspeaker van. In my village (!) in rural Thailand the sound pollution makes Patong seem a desert island. The villagers have no conception of considerate neighbour. On one side the farmer has a few cows and burns green grass 24/7 to keep the mosquitoes off. The other side varies his entrepreneurial instincts by breeding/growing pigs/fish/chickens/geese then maize/sugar cane eachone stinking with chemical or sh1t. Then his son comes home and turns on the equivalent of a nightclub sound system. 300 metres away the wat/temple does everything amplified through rock concert volume speakers. Currently its Cowpensar so an idiot with a gong beats time from 4:00am until its light. Regularly there is a party for a wedding/boy going into temple/house warming/ burning with, yes you guessed it sports stadium volumes amplification, each lasting about 3 days all day and most of the night. Now funerals, there is a joke: coconuts filled with gunpowder fired into the air exploding with a racket that I swear causes my heart to miss a beat, and this goes on and on........ Now I go to Bangkok everytime I get fed up or if the speakers happen to set up a resonance in my house.............

Basicly I fluctuate from anger to boredom........ Now if I had rented a house not built one then I would nt be so tied........ Oh yes the locals seem pleasant enough but they really dont care and I would hate to speak Thai well enough to understand what they are saying about us.......

Moral: stay among people you understand.

  10. I do understand her reasons for moving near family but their needs to be more going on than what their is in village life.

Do you really know why she wants to be near her family? You will probably work out that its cheaper to build or buy a house rather t than rent over the long term. Of course the house will belong to your wife. If you fall out she is ok in her own house near her family. If you dont fall out there is no way she will sell the house near family so if you want to move you start again. It sounds a dream buying a house and if bored then selling up and moving on. Wrong. everytime you move you add to her housing portfolio.

plenty more to write but mrs lounger is being bossy............

  11. Thailand culture ans values will not change in our lifetime (no matter how young some of you are!!).

Behaviour is already changing. I see old people ignoring the modern world.........young ones spending money their parents are borrowing... families living in separate houses( not always because of work location )...people are attending the temple less.

But granny still looks after the baby.

Old people bob down as a sign of respect, young are less inclined to........but granny still looks after the baby

I cannot see the next generation looking after the baby

  12. definitely not. Ever hear of upper classes. Its not about money its who you are.

ps Class stinks in my view

Of course I knw what and whom you are referring to and acknowledge some truth in what you imply but, I'm sorry, if you don't think that in this country (as in most if not all) wealth and power can earn you a place among the ruling elite -- well, you need to think again.

Semantics. I wasnt thinking ruling as in 'government' elite but the amart. who certainly dont accept new faces. your comment starting' if you dont think...........you need to think again' is bullying. Im off this thread

  13. Shows how out of touch the Thai Visa news section regulars are with the opinions of the majority of Thai people IMO.

Great day for Thailand - putting the military and elite firmly in their places once and for all.

So you wouldnt be calling one of the richest men in the world one of the elite then?

definitely not. Ever hear of upper classes. Its not about money its who you are.

ps Class stinks in my view

  14. We have had Thaksin before and it was not a bad thing by 3rd world standards.

He was strict on crime and drugs. progressive for business and in many ways a more western style leader. His methods , on the other hand, were over zealous but is that, dare I say it, the only way to genuinely shake up the embedded attitudes . The Chinese autocracy/democrats dont want progress they want the ants to stay ants and the foreigners kept out of any situation that allows them to compete. Are those days over will they move over and let some new faces be given opportunities, will the radical wing become left centre as in developed countries?

If I went against Thaksin I would be afraid. Amnesty may need redefinition just as Clinton and Bush redefined certain words.

All in all a new power with a new broom but I cant really see any difference filtering down to the masses apart from a police force with a clearer mandate. The masses have been here before and strangely thought Thaksin the first time round made a difference to their lives. He didnt. Global growth did the work for him. This time its a far more difficult climate and it is going to be hard work achieving anything for them unless borrowings are increased on a massive scale. Of course large amounts of money mean corruption..........

for the expat I think things can only get better

  15. With four out of the country, one remaining commissioner Somchai Juengprasert would not be able to handle fraud complaints should any arise, he said.

This is Thailand, where if you pretend hard enough that bad things won't happen, they miraculously go away. So, if a fraud complaint is made, but there's nobody around to hear it, does the fraud exist? Result: a fraud-free election! I think they've just gone to Europe to celebrate their success.

Yep, that just about covers it:

Get away from pre election problems

    Avoid election results

but the bit about checking expats voting proceedures in Icland is a bit thin. How about checking in with expelled expats. Maybe they need instructions on when to declare an election invalid.....

  16. Hey guys give the poor chaps a chance. We started it by handing out beads a few hundred years ago. They thought beads meant something and so more and more ceremonies are invented to justify acquiring more and more.

I like the post above that pointed out that the new knights sympathies should be more in line with the redshirts. No one ever believed the police were apolitical. This proves it. Pity about needing to support the Phillipines, that should be a gaol sentence......

Yes but who can arrest a Knight of the roll your own ( wasnt rizla the paper for roll your own?) Answer: Sir Filtertips ............sorry I cant be more explicit or the post will be edited but something to do with bar girls

  18. I shan't comment on your Thai partner accompanying you as that's purely at your discretion. I have one client who as done what you plan and they found Spain much more accepting of a European Male/Asian female relationship than the rather more draconian attitudes adopted in the UK when they were there too...

It doesn't sound like you will be shifting a lot of capital when you move, but I just wish to highlight one very important point. Spain has a dual taxation treaty with the UK which carries some advantages/disadvantages. If you have any lump sum (proceeds from a Thai property sale or what not) - leave it offshore and do NOT repatriate the funds either to the UK or Spain. Leaving them 'in limbo' offshore would give you some significant tax savings and avoid too much of your money being taxed locally in Spain.

Outside of the 'millionaire playboy' suburbs property is very cheap in Spain compared to the rest of the EU and Madrid has been known for being the cheapest EU Capital city for quite some time etc etc.. At retirement age, access to cheap/free medical care is also a very compelling reason to relocate from Asia/elsewhere.

I know this is going off topic slightly, but no one else mentioned it here so I thought you might be interested in this snippet of information. Forewarned in forearmed as they say!

Very best wishes and good luck.

Thailand and UK also have a double taxation agreement so no advantage there.

In Thailand the Old age pension is frozen and therefore not grow with inflation. In Spain OAP will get indexation increases in line with UK.

I am disapointed that the posters who have some experience of Spain dont mention anything of quality of life. Are the expats friendly, do they all complain like the expats in Thailand????? I live in rural Thailand and am thinking of moving. The easy choice would be Pattaya etc but who wants to walk away from one house and have to start again. Years ago tv programs suggested that buying property in Spain can be a nightmare because of dodgy dealers in cahoots with lawyers etc. Are these a part of life or rare occurrances?

  19. was hit in the head by a taxi driver at the hotel entrance. He [the driver] did not know the man’s company brings about 450,000 tourists to Phuket each year.

A motor cycle taxi removed his safety helmet and hit me over the head with it. But that's fair game as I dont bring 450,000 tourists to phuket each year ................

So is this a story about

    1) double standards

    2) a Tour operator being clobbered

    3) tourists being diverted to other destinations

    4) What it takes to get officialdom moving..

any answer which includes the words 'mafia losing out' wins an overcharged tuk tuk ride

  20. As I said in a recent thread it was a delight to watch the Phuket tuk tuk drivers lose out when the Queen Mary 2 offloaded by tender at Patong beach 10 days ago. Cunard had already had a correspondence fight against these drivers who were reportedly charging several thou baht for short trips and 10k baht plus for half day trips when Cunard docked at a proper port on the island about a year ago. Hence the change of venue (reportedly) and hence Cunard had gone out of its way to lay on tour coaches and minivans. Tuk tuks could not get close to the offloading spot and had mean pickings that day.

cheers well done jolly good show here here

Its totally absurd. can anyone imagine a convention ship full of business salesmen packing into a ragtag convoy of delapidated ripoff tuk tuks heading off to the convention venue for a dinner and entertainment......each vehicle seperately negotiated .....................

    idiots all
