  1. Did you mean to say "It sounds like he's still in his teens?" :o

I'm not in my teens anymore, however I still drive an old car. I've never owned a new car which saved on insurance; it wasn't worth carrying insurance on the cars I had and that goes for the one I have now!

    AUTO, without a doubt!

BKK traffic is hard enough to drive in, dodging (or not, depending on your mood) the insane motorcyclists, let alone having to worry about shifting. clutching using the parking brake etc!

  2. Try to keep the overall picture. Chances are you did not make enough money to be required to file a tax return and that should be your position going in. It is the IRS responsibility to prove you made enough to file, in other words, the burden of proof is on them to prove your figures are not correct.

Their objective is to get you back on the tax roles and paying taxes. Thus they can be quite lenient in forgiving back taxes in such a situation, however, since your marginal at best, it is not worth their time to spend a lot of effort to prove you may owe a few dollars. They certainly can understand a citizen becoming an expat and never intending to return to the U.S.

There are tax attorneys who specialize in representing you before the IRS and getting massive amounts of owed tax forgiven when it appears there is no ability to pay. Guys coming off years of drug addiction are in this category.

H.R. Block and other tax preparers have all the knowledge to play the accounting game with what documents you may have to establish income over the years.

Certainly, if you go in with all the documents you have and declare that "that is all there is" and it accurately reflects what income you made, you should be all right. Who is to prove otherwise?

If you had an honest belief that you income was below the amount required for you to have to file, you off to a good start. Follow that up with documentation proving your right and you should be ok.

The IRS has published that 40 Million Americans file income tax returns that they don't have to. My CPA had me filing when I didn't have to. Of course, that was his business so!!!!

I do NOT believe this is correct! I believe every US citizen needs to file a tax return, regardless of the amount of income.

You won't have to pay anything, but you need to file a return, at least the Fed return (not sure about each state) every year.

  3. Thanks for briefing what the sources already said, but I need laymens terms... the limit is 8xxx $, ok I take this means if I've earned less than this in a year, I don't need to file? If I have made more (which all I might be able to show is a Thai bank statement/bankbook) than I should have filed but didn't cause didn't know, so am I screwed or is there a way to fix this and do a belated filing from here???

Actually, even though I did make average no more than 300k baht each year I've been here--or some 9,000 USD annum, even as a single guy in the first few years, I was a student so does that exempt me (most everything I made went towards tuition and living, no hope for saving anything those years) ? And for the last three years, I haven't been a student, but I haven't been single...not officially married but staying together and having a son together, doesn't that make me defacto married and thus exempt as a married couples limit is certainly higher than I've ever made?

The part about excluding 80XXX $ simply makes no sense to me? What the heck does this mean and how does it apply to me, if at all...? Again, I've not worked with the IRS for 30 years, so such ambiguous terminology about taxes and such aren't clear or familiar to me and surely many others who may be in my position now, or in the future.

Let's keep it simple for all American expats who decided to domocile in another country (at the bottom of the expat food chain) for 5+ years just barely getting by...as a student, as a father (or mother) exempt or not? If not, how to fix things? Surely I'm not the only American in LOS getting by on a peanut compensation and not considering that I might owe IRS, especially considering I was always getting taxed in LOS anyway, though it not amounting to any social benefits, etc.

    Thanks again,

Buy Turbotax deluxe, I've been using it for years, and it takes care of all this stuff for you.

You can buy it online and download it...don't think Pantip carries this.

  4. I cannot believe that something like that would happen in Thailand !

    :o

Yes, it's true. Boating accidents only occur in Thailand. Go figure.

    :D

I've been going to that Yok Yor (Khlongsan) for years, and often see the commercial boats cruising without any lights at all!

They also seem to drive boats they way the car drivers drive on the roads, a total free for all!

I'm surprised there aren't more boat collisions!

  5. My advice to you is steer well clear of True for as much as you can.

I too would like to hear about any alternative to True Visions from anyone that has information. Sorry about being off subject.

There were several questions on what alternatives to TOT and True there are, but I didn't see an answer.

Also, does anyone know if there is internet offered thru the "cable" (satellite) systems, as is the case in many other countries?

  6. As I have an apartment that I use in BKK, my hotel usage is limited except for holidays outside BKK. However what this does raise is the question of (a) fire regs in Thailand and (:bah: their enforcement. Are there regular inspections? If yes, by whom and how often (and are the reports then public docs)? If no inspections, what is the point of having regulations!?!

    :o:D:D:D:D:bah:

    You're GOT to be joking!

  7. It is supposed to be illegal to ride motorbikes on the pavement

Actually, last time I read the Thai "Highway Code" it's legal to ride motorcycles on the pavement, as long as the road is congested.

Haha. Not sure if that's a joke, but it would not surprise me at all :o

Is there really such a thing as the Thai "Highway Code" ? Is there an english language version ?

Is it legal to ride a motorcycle in the wrong direction down a main road ? I'm very curious.

It's not a joke - but it's only in Thai (though people doing a driving test do get a brief glance at an English translation).

It's not legal to ride a motorcycle in the wrong direction.

And I'm sure you're very curious, too.

Is it illegal to ride a motorcycle at night with no lights? So many of them do much of the time, and virtually all of them have disconnected their tailights! Anyone have a clue as to why?

  8. He added the BMA had replaced all the old public dustbins with transparent ones in the city centre, and that more than 2,500 new bins would be installed next month.

    -- The Nation 2007-02-22

Can someone pls tell me how transparent dustbins will help stop bombings? Have you ever looked inside one of these. They are full of bags, paper and plastic. You can see the bags clearly, but not what's inside them. Seems like a totally useless exercise me.

  9. I read of Chaiyaphum in a tourist guide the other day, "...of no significant interest..."

I once stayed in a hotel there, the one with the disco in basement, the factor that made it so much more like a prision was the way that all the rooms doors opened outwards. Slop out at 06:00 :o

Chaiyaphum has a brand new resort hotel (River Resort) which is quite nice, behind the main hospital. Quite a step up from the older place.

  10. CROSS-CULTURAL MARRIAGES

Foreign husbands bring big changes to Isaan

It cited the example of many Thai wives now being keener on eating Western food and almost forgetting somtam - the region's popular papaya salad dish.

The wives still ate somtam, which they grew up eating, but also ate pizza, hamburgers or fried chicken as a symbol of their adjustment to Western culture.

Many ended up eating both local and Western dishes, while their husbands found it harder to adjust to local food and stuck more to Western food.

Supawatanakorn said that since the wives found it more convenient to cook once for all family members including their husbands, Northeastern food - especially somtam with fermented fish - had gradually disappeared from their meals, she said.

Where can you find western food in Isan? The only place I know of is the McDonalds in the Megamall in Korat

  11. .

Temple festivals have very little to do with religion though, it's entertainment. Huge parties around the temple grounds. And this was the rocket festival, so a huge event. I don't think anyone would go there if there would be no booze nor entertainment. I would imagine temple festivals are a big thing in the country side in Thailand, never seen one though.[/b] I did see some in the Shan States, in the Union of Myanmar. It was a huge party, people getting drunk everywhere. There were two major enterntainment options, ladyboy dancing or kickboxing. I chose the latter. Them both happened inside a walled area, so you had to buy the ticket first.

Yes, in the countryside virtually all the festivals are in the temple grounds. One has to realize that the temples are the primary social focal point for most village or communities, religious and otherwise, so it is natural that "festivals" and shows, which usually have young girls doing rather suggestive dancing in Vegas style cabaret costumes, are held at the temples. In the US the churches serve such a purpose as well for many small communities without community centers.

Also, the temples are often the only places around that have any open space that isn't flooded half the time, and has facilities such as toilets and electricity.

  12. I have a friend from the UK who works in Thailand. He asked his employer about the minimum salary requirement (because he earns less than that) and they explained to him that they have to pay income tax in his name on the minimum salary, even if he earns less than this.

Has anyone else been told this? It would seem to make sense as it implies that the rule is designed to maximise the tax revenues for the government, rather than as a minimum wage protection for foreign workers.

I was working out tax with a Thai friend of mine who just got a new job at pretty close to 50k. His tax every month is going to be less than 4k. At 20k or 24k (as the previous posters said) the tax would be negligible.

TAXABLE INCOME = assessable income - deductions - allowances

In the most basic calculation, where the person just deducts 60k (exempt) and 30k (individual allowance) then the taxable income is 600k - 90k = 510k and total tax for the year is 44,500 or 3,708/month. The employer pays the tax to the government every month (PAYE), and should then pay you the rest of the money (46,292). If they don't, then their books will still show that it was paid and the money can be offset against revenue or used for other 'off the book' expenses (ahem!)

I saw another post about a teacher who claimed his colleagues earning the same as him (substantially less than 50k) were driving BMWs etc. I'm beginning to understand why!

I don't know where you are figuring your tax rate from. But here is the tax schedule. On 510,000 baht you pay 20% which is 102,000 per year or 8,500 per month. Not a small amount for someone that i actually only getting paid 30,000 per month.

Taxable Income Tax Rate (%) Tax Amount Accumulated Tax

    0 - 50,000 Exempt - -

    50,001 - 100,000 5 2,500 2,500

    100,001 - 500,000 10 40,000 42,500

    500,001 - 1,000,000 20 100,000 142,500

    1,000,001 - 4,000,000 30 900,000 1,042,500

    4,000,001 and over 37

Wolfmanjack, don't attempt accountancy, it'll only make your head hurt!

You pay 20% on everything above 500,000, i.e. the 10k. For everything up to 500,000 the accumulated tax is 42,500. Add in 20% of 10k and you get 44,500.

If your school (or bar?) only pays you 30k/month then that should be the amount after tax has been paid (though it should be higher). You would not pay the tax, the company has to pay it and deduct it from your wage.

Is this really so hard to understand?!

    Wolfmanjack,

Manjara is correct. The tax table he lists above is the correct one.

OOPS, sorry, got the names mixed up, Wolfmanjack is correct... :o

  14. I for one would be up for racial and religious profiling! This random searching doesn't cut it. Go after the people that look like they want to blow up a plane. I won't go any further on this topic for fear of being removed...

It's amazing how things always revert back to 911.

"Jimmy, how was school today?", "Well, mommy, we had lunch and it sucked so my teacher said it was because of 911".

    See what i mean?

    :o:D:D

  15. This nickel and diming is part of the financial package to pay for the shiny new terminal. Yeah, the new terminal in Toronto charges you for every <deleted> thing. Ridiculous. Almost separated my shoulder carrying all my bags through because I refused to pay for something that should be free.

Internet is free at Tokyo Narita. This is just another reminder that Bangkok isn't Tokyo.

What "Internet is free at Tokyo Narita"???? I haven't been there in 6 months, but it's always been 100 yen for 15 minutes.

  16. Anybody who needs Viagra in Thailand is seriously impaired. Boiled rice and fish sauce should be enough in a country of young lovelies.

These older square heads need to get fit and lose the massive guts they carry. Then they may actually see their equipment and observe its condition.

If you are fit and healthy, bread and water should be sufficient for performance and all these big dick juices do is enhance some losers self esteem while getting his yearly dose of pussy.

The Viagra pill gives the mirage that you are actually sexually functional. For these withered members it is like putting a turbo charged V8 under the hood of a clapped out Bangkok taxi.

Sooner or later you are going to blow a gasket.

Logbags, get off your holier than thou high horse!!!!

Viagra helps a lot of people, and it is not just psychological. ARe you a <deleted> Doctor?

Keep your stupid opions to yourself!!

Anyone who knows should comment, all the rest is a distraction.

    :D

Everyone of these is equally imcomplete and ambiguous.

Sunbelt started this, so it would be helpful if they could create a table, showing all the possibilities, and then have a naive English speaking person proof-read it for inconsistencies and ambiguities.

There are more than a few posts here that contradict themselves. :D

Sorry, make that native English speaking.... They already have enough of the former

  19. This plot is serious, it was hatched on the 4th hole and continued in planning onto the 19th hole.

Most high ranking Thai army officers are more concerned with how many caddies they need and how the handicap is going than staging a take-over.

The pra-thi-wat in Thailand is about exchanging one group of crooks with some uniformed ones while it is decided who is going to rob the country next.

I personally would start with a few warning shots, right into Thaksins square head. :o

Logbags, suggest you be very careful about things like your last statement. Several of my Thai friends have warned me about internet traffic being monitored for such things...not just porn.

This is especially dangerous if you have a traceable line, like DSL.
