  1. Absolutely. If you have a Green Card you can do that and you have the correct paper work to do so.

The same happens in Thailand. Get the correct paper work and everything will be ok. But if companies employ some "Tourists" on a 30 Day entry Stamp or Tourist Visa, sorry but that's not the way it should be.....

Not true! Your work permit is paid for, and tied to your employer. Leave the employer and the work permit is cancelled, and you have to apply all over again (and someone has to pay again) with the new employer.

  2. Just goto a Thai embassy/consulate overseas and get a single/double or triple entry. Easy. Then you can stay as a tourist for 3 months without having to leave. Every 3 months if on a single entry. Just go to another country and get another visa. Its not rocket science! Or am i wrong?

Ain't that easy. Many Thai embassies won't grant multiple entry visas.

  3. News from the new regulation:

This is coming from the Chief of Immigration.

1on this scheme and now will allow it.)

5.Now the news for frequent visitors: We have checked this upwards and backwards all day and it has been confirmed by a copy of the new regulation we have. If you have a visa on arrival more than three times in six months, you cannot come into Thailand without a visa from an Embassy/Consulate. When you enter Thailand, even if you are here just 1 hour, this counts as 30 days. If you come back 6 weeks later for 2 days, this again is 30 days. If you arrive a month later for 4 days, still counts as 30 days. When you leave, you cannot enter Thailand for 3.5 months without coming back with a visa. The reason is to force people who are supposed to have work permits to do so and pay tax.

Another example; you arrive for a week, this counts as 30 days, One month later 3 days and its 30 days, two months later and its for a two week period, still another 30 days. You can reenter Thailand in 6 weeks without having a visa.

    ---

    Your best choice:

    Get a multiple Non-Immigrant Visa:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/422.0.html

Am I missing something here? The two examples cited above seem to describe the same circumstances, yet in the first it's stated that the person cannot come back until after 3.5 months, but the 2nd can after just 1.5 months.

    ??????????? :o

  4. They secure the owners of the small shope to vote for them and lose 6 million votes from the people who were looking forward to shopping in them. Thai logic, a contradiction in terms. :o

Not really : the minister just put a hold on the creation of new stores.

    So :

-they keep the votes of the people who are already shopping in Tesco/Carrefour etc. (and you're right to say that they're happy with that)

-and they keep the vote of small retailers (who are really angry, we can understand)

After the election, of course, it will be "back to business". The small retailers will eventually loose.

The governement will draft a "cosmetic" regulation. Face will be saved. And more importantly : foreign investments will be saved...

The move is obvious : this is why the multinationals were very fast to say "khrap mai mi pen ha" to the lunatic minister. Because they know that it's pure thai bullshit.

Well said. Love the description in the last paragraph! :D:D

  5. Thailand Is Considered As A Sanctuary For Foreign Criminals

Do I read you well, Foreign Criminals?

Why not just say Thailand Is Considered As A Sanctuary For Criminals.

Crime is everywhere, when the top is giving the bad example.

If the top is allowed illegal doings, the rest will follow so.

That is so in a country, in a corporation, in a football ligue, that is so on Internet. Why should it then be different, in a country where political and ethical standards are low?

It is called decadence, ask the Romans.

    Very good comparison!!!

  6. http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2006/images/08/28/k...ot.to.quash.pdf

go here for the court reports , and details of his "confession"

reader discretion , theres some nasty stuff in there.

it will be interesting to see how the thai authorities backtrack on this , but in reality , anyone who makes confessions like this needs arresting and investigating.

the idiot is clearly barking mad and someone who confesses to fantasies like that presents a great danger to kids. there was no choice but to arrest , deport and check his dna to prove or disprove his involvement. full credit to the authorities. in the end they were wrong , but he had to be checked.

to be sneering and taunting the authorities with cries of "i told you so" for falling for his delusions is surely missing the point. this country is better off without him .

as for him making vast amounts of money out of this , well even i would credit the american media with more sense than to promote the story of a pornography addicted paedophile who has also confessed to the murder of a child.

i think he will be universally reviled.

    Very well put!!!!

  7. One thing that a farang can do to get well regarded is to take photos on a digital camera and show them on the little screen on the back.

Agreed, and also as Martin says, when you can, get them printed out and donate them accordingly. I take pictures at the local sports days and hand them out. I took pictures at the last event at school, a sort of end of term prize giving event, as I was the only farang to turn up.... guess what? ... I was asked to give out the prizes.

This is so very true. Most NE families have virtually NO photos of any of their relatives or children, only a few old B&W "official" pictures, as a monk or in the armed service. Most never owned a camera or could even think of buying film and processing (especially 20+ yrs ago).

I find this so sad, especially since there are very few (maybe 3) of my Thai gf growing up. I would have loved to see more of her when she was little, thru the various stages of growing up. We westerners take our children's (and parents') photos for granted.

My gf's hometown in in Chaiyaphum, and although we don't live there, we visit quite often, and I always take a LOT of pictures, and have the good ones printed and mounted for my next trip, to hand out to all the family and neighbors. They are SO appreciative. For many, it's the only photo they have of themselves or their children. I've even brought my scanner and laptop with me and scanned in all the old family pics, and provided enlarged, digitally enhanced, suitably mounted reprints for them, along with the photo-CD so that if anything should happen to the originals, the few photos they've ever had are not lost forever.

My gf's 105 yr old granfather passed away a few months ago, and I was fortunate to have visited him the month bofore, armed with, of course, a high quality digital camera. I was able to provide the whole family with excellent photos and decent movies of the eldest's last few days. There was only a single (75+yr old) pic of him hanging in my gf's parents' house before, now they have high quality color pics of all of them together.

The digital camera is a great icebreaker.

  8. All major civil projects take longer and cost more than planned. The new BKK airport is no exception. Look at Kansai...over budget and sinking!!! The new international airport in Denver Colorado USA was almost a year late, and the multi million baggage system never worked.

I think the main problem with the new BKK aiport is the train service being 2-3 years behind, as was mentioned earlier in this string. This is a prime example of very poor planning, like designing and building a car, with the wheels as an afterthought. There may also be some "other" influences at work her too, like all the political squabbling over rights of way, poor construction, inferior materials, chance for taxis to make a killing (aka G.R.A.F.T)

  9. Roads to be closed for royal celebrations

Area access, parking to also be affected

BANGKOK: -- Some major downtown roads and adjoining neighbourhoods will be closed before and during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the King's accession to the throne, traffic police said. No vehicles will be allowed on designated roads or to enter nearby areas from June 8-13. These will be both lanes of Uthong Nai road, the entire Royal Plaza of Dusit Palace and both lanes of Si Ayutthaya road from the Royal Plaza intersection to the 1st Division of the King's Guard intersection.

As well, two lanes of Ratchadamnoen Nok avenue, from the ...[more]

    -- Bangkok Post 2006-06-04

Anyone have a MAP showing all the closed roads???? I have received numerous emails from friends with many roads, intersections, "tollway" exits that will be closed, and it is very confusing.

There aren't consistant names used for what's called the "2nd stage tollway", the one running north from the Rama 9 bridge to the outer ring road, north of Pathum Thani. That's the road I take every day, and it seems that some of it will be closed, but can't tell from the various descriptions.

    Thanks

p.s. does anyone know if the WEST outer ring road construction/repair is complete?

  10. i dont do many logs on thaivisa.com , this but read many , however i feel obliged to speak here.

i used to work for the major telecom company in the UK

what happens is all OLO (Other licenced operators) have links within themselves thro to each other using buildings and networks rented off of each other ( a real mess)

each of these companies have switches separate from the mobile base sites but all interconnected from base sites to switch to land lines and international routes etc over many many patterns.

if a reputable company such as the one i used to work monitors alarms you will find hunderes of these ´LINKS¨are noisy, erroring and give one way transmission etc etc .

these need to be faulted - faulty cards, optic cards, codecs, line cards, erroring transmission paths etc etc

these channels are normally set to autobusy and flag alarms ´too many and you have congestion.

noise causes errors, not normally service affecting as the signalling is another path but at least you can speak, or again one way transmission.

what happened between some of these OLO companies, some had good at proactive maintenance and some relied on faults to be reported. major difference in performance.

what resulted, was say, BT, being blamed for noise, cut offs, one way transmission etc, to say telewest, C&W etc but the fault as previously stated here gets bounced. no one takes responsibilty.

what you end up with is what ever is faulty ' crap ´2/34 meg links etc ´never get sorted and you are left with a mess to try and get a connection

those that look after the network have no problems.

when i read these logs, there is nothing evident as to what the problem is and many faults can be nothing to do with this network congestion.

i know DTAC has been one way transmission faults for a long time, even within thailand from mobile BSE to landline or international.

DTAC to AIS is also dodgy.

base station BSE congestion could be an issue but you should get some indication of this and the over flow monitoring should flag this

it could be just one faulty link with say 31 channels that are affected, but we access them .

someone needs to report the faults and say what numbers dialed from where so they can reproduce a trace etc.

just complaining about scenarios is not going to fix the problem.

i guess DTAC and AIS need to look at the traffic flow on their routes, how many are autobusied out etc etc .

ORANGE being european i guess will work the similart practice as the UK and France and therefore less problems.

make a list of what calls fail. and when to what numbers etc

call your service provider and report the fault ' get a reference.

    they need to act.

we did in the UK..all companies had to work together. 24 hours.

    best of luck

    sand

Sand, what the h__l language are you trying to speak here

  11. simple Thai system:

make 10 connections, but sell 10,000

    When complains: ignore

When complains go to the government: pay to that minister/official, and problem has probably ended.

When the problem continues: go to temple and pray

When problem sustains: change of name, so the bed spirits cannot find you anymore

When problem persists: hire in a farang to solve it.

    :o:D:D

  12. Well, as usual some interesting retorts from the average joe...

this is a long shot i know, but did the german run because he needed some exercise, did he really want a red car instead, maybe it was the girls fault that he ran? or did he run because he had been committing a crime/s?

I don't know where it is ok to make allowances from criminal behaviour and so, I do not...as i understand it...in a democracy...the authorities (parliament, state institutions etc) have sole responsiblity for the handling of crime...if justice is to have any value in a society in creating a just society to live in, then (according to Kant) justice requires an equal distribution amongst those deserving it, whether the type of justice is remunerative, political or commutative...a rationa underlying principle is that a crime is a crime and will be dealt with fairly, not by avoiding one's responsibilities...this only denies justice being accorded.

over the last 12 months drugs have killed and maimed more people then George Bush, Tony Blair and John Howard...and as i believe they all acted criminally, and should be dealt with by the law, equally the german gentleman should take responsibility for his actions, and accept punishment...

surely, taking responisibility for one's actions is somewhere near the apex of a couragous, rational and socially constructive act...

do we really want to condone and support those who insist on acting antisocially and break the law?

    Edward der Grosse' :o

What the H___ are you talking about?????????? :D

  13. Motorcycles were involved in most road accidents, followed by pick-up trucks and passenger cars. Most accidents occurred during 4pm-8pm, a time frame of often heavier traffic combined with difficult or deceptive lighting at sundown.

Or NO lights on the vehicles, and not just at sundown.

It never ceases to amaze (and anger) me how many drivers here don't use their lights at night, and those who disconnect their tailights. What could possibly be the motivation, other than pure stupidity!!

  14. So why not get out of Pattaya when the sh*t goes down? :o When I still lived in Bangkok, I would leave during Songkran because they managed to mess it up every year.

The provinces are far more agreeable, with less idiots per square meter.

Not necessarily. I've been Chaiyaphum for many a Songkran, and although it doesn't have the crazy farangs, and not too many "high pressure" water guns (they can't afford them), there is must as much water thrown about, even at cars and motorcycles....and more alchohol involved!

  15. I don't think that I attacked anyones credibility I merely pointed out the facts, and the facts are that this poster doesn't appear to have the first clue as to the total population of Thais in the states and where they reside. My gut feeling as you put it was merely the input that I have gotten from hundreds of our Thai friends around the country, and that is that they think that Thaksin has done a good job so far. If you also believe that 1/2 of all Thais in the U.S. live in the LA area then I will gladly give you the same advice, you need to get around to other Thai communities in the states a little more. If you are a anti Thaksin person thats fine, please put forward any intelligent discourse that might make your case as to why any Thai should vote against Thaksin or more importantly why they should vote for your candidate. Finally to end this evening I will say yes, it was an incredibly outrageous statement to say that 50% of all Thais in the states live in LA(when the fact is that it is more like 5 or 6%) , kind of like if I were to say that 50% of all Irish live in the Boston area just because there is a large and concentrated Irish community in Boston. I think that you may want to think a little more next time before you post. Whoever the new PM is, lets hope that he is good for Thailand and all of its citizens.

I don't know if I should be dignifying your post with a response, but here goes. Yes, I was merely pointing out facts, not advocating an opinion. Before you attack my account of the facts, maybe you should do your homework first. The fact is that the Thai community in America numbers around 200,000 (including my family). About 100,000 of these are estimated to be in the Southern California area. Yes, there are Thais all over the country - I'm familiar with significant communities in Maryland, Virginia, Portland, Chicago and St. Louis to name a few. But these are all dwarfed by the community in the LA area.

So who's the one shooting from the hip here? I'll let this one go, but if you keep doing this, it's your credibility that's at risk, not mine.

    OFF TOPIC!!!!

Get back to the subject. Who cares about how many Thais live where in the U.S.? What does that have to do with Toxin?

  16. because someone has done some good things doesnt excuse his midemeaners. Thaksin is very corrupt, he uses his position to make himself more wealthy. Corruption is a huge problem in Thailand and if the prime minister is getting away with it and condoning it then this sends a terrible message and example to the rest of the country. This is why Thaksin has to go!

I have lived this life for 68 years and I yet to meet any person who is not corrupt to a greater or lesser degree, It is my belief that we are all currupt in one form or another.

Saying that, does it matter if the corruption is on a grand scale or a minor chord? after all corruption is corruption, and there is no country that is free from it.

Poeple who live in glasshouses should not throw stones (IDIOM )

    Iam Breconman ....your not

Who was it who said "better to be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt"?

  17. Artisan, Where did you get that stunning girl in your Avitar?

First met her in 1993 when I was working in Bangkok; she worked for the same company....PTT. She has been Mrs. Artisan since 1998.

You are a very fortunate man indeed. Thai women are more beautiful than most of the world anyway, but your stands above them!

  18. i've driven in thailand, and been driven by decent bus drivers and lunatic bus drivers, about even in ratio, when driving i've come across good drivers and again lunatic drivers, maybe 70% good and 30% bad.

this is only what i have experienced myself,

as it only takes one idiot to cause an accident, compared to driving in the usa or england you would have to come to a conclusion that driving in thailand is definately more dangerous.

as people have commented earlier until road education is taken seriously, do not expect the accident rate to fall any time soon. and as thailand becomes more affluent and more cars join the inadequate roads, personally i expect the accident and fatality rate to grow.

I've been reading this thread for a couple of days now, and there are good arguements on both "sides". I had to comment here, though on the above quote about taking "road education" seriously. What road education?? There is none in Thailand! The behaviour of all the drivers here is freighting proof of that every day. The US drivers are no saints, by any means, but there has been driver eduction (mandatory to get a liscense), and public advertising campaigns on radio, TV, roadside billboards...everwhere, for decades. I'm sure there are similar education programes in other countries, but I haven't seen anything here. My Thai gf got her driver's liscense with virtually no knowledge of how to drive, it's a joke. On top of all the ego motivated behaviour that the local drivers show is just plain ignorance of how to driive, basic awareness of the true dangers of operating a heavy vehicle at high speeds. There is ignorance of the simple laws of physics of a 30 ton truck traveling at 100 km/hr trying to stop in time to avoid hitting the 1 ton car that just pulled in front of it without looking. The US driver's education system teaches these things, shows reaction time to putting on the brakes, and how much distance is traveled as a function of speed, and braking time as a function of speed...ete etc. As I observe the behaviour of the drivers here, I can see this ignorance. The total oblivion most drivers here exhibit about what is going on around them, the total lack of planning ahead for a turn, looking in rear view mirrors every once in a while, using LIGHTS AT NIGHT, etc etc. These are just basic common sense things that you would think most people know, but it isn't the case here. Perhaps a significant increase in true "road education", in all forms, starting with the youner ones, would help.

    My 2 satang's worth..

  19. My job is taking care of the dead and injured in Thailand. Here are some things may want to know. Around 70% of the dead and injured at night have alcohol in their blood.

Driving licences can be bought readily and easily for 500 Thai baht.

Even if a Thai owns a real licence, driving instuction and testing is not only sub-standard but bizzare at times.

Brides to police range from 100 to 300 Thai baht (for Thais).

Drivers are generally underpaid and overworked. "10 wheelers" as they are called here, are often in needless accidents because of driver error. Vans, because of sleep depravation.

Street lighting and vehicle lighting is inadequate and unmonitored. If there are ever campaigns to monitor this, bribes are used to escape more heafty fines.

Roads are sub-standard and down right dangerous! The BKK-Chon buri motorway is one of the worst in the whole country. Thaksin personally said no to a proposed upgrade of this road! This is from the Engineers mouth in charge of the proposal.

Actually more foreigners die on this road and in Pattaya than any other one place in Thailand. The amount of foreigners killed by rented motorcycles in and around Pattaya is scandelous too (no need to have a driving licence, just a passport will do).

Thais are generally nice people, but behind the wheel of a vehicle they become very aggressive and violent because of the stresses of driving in a crazy environment coupled with their inadequate driving skills. Not just aggressive driving, but actual road rage, and the use of weapons and hand-guns at the scenes of accidents is prevelant! Beware.

I love Thailand and thats why I stay and volunteer here but am so sad when the government doesn't accept its responsiblities for all the above!

There is also a fair percentage of drivers here that drive at night without lights!!! Even the fuel trucks, at night, on an unlit road, going 20km/hr on an 80 kh/hr road.

I see most motorcycles without tailights, and not just old ones, new ones too. I even see brand new BMWs and Merc's (w/red plates) with no tailights.

Can someone out there tell me what the reasoining is behind such a STUPID practice??

I've heard "...I can OK, why I need light...?"

  20. What is the hangup with posts about bargirls? As can be seen from this very long thread (11+ pages), it is a topic a lot of people are interested in, and, after all, isn't what this forum is about, discssions about things people are interested in? www.barladies.com is a site to find/see bargirls, not to discuss/share our members' experiences with them.

Does slagging each other off equate to discussions about what a lot of people are interested in then.

    I think not.

Maybe that,s why bargirl posts are excluded don,t you think.

The moderators are doing there job and any reasonable person should accept there ruling as sensible because of the offence the topic causes with irresponsible comments.

Read through the 11 pages you refer to and re asses for yourself.

Even if you personally don,t agree to there judgement at least think about the other members

of T.Visa who have agreed to certain rules and decisions admin must make to control verbal brawls

as is happening on this thread.

Moderators do a good jod sorting through all the bile and having to decide what is reasonable

discussion, let,s not make it any more difficult and abide by there ruling.

Let,s back there decisions and if someone is not satisfied post the admin to put your feelings across in a sensible manner.

I,m sure also T.Visa members are sick of reading the non productive comments in this thread.

    marshbags :o:D:D

Marshbags, no argument here. You're right, there is a need for bile clensing, just thought this topic generated enough "legitimate" comments to warrant re-consideration. If not, then so be it.

I'm not trying to challenge the system. This is a great forum.

  21. Just WHAT can we talk about, o wise one?

BPayette, please pardon me; I did not take notice of your joining date. It is just about the same time as mine actually. This is not important though. I will tell you what you cannot talk about here: Bargirls. If you don't believe me, ask or PM the administrator or any of the moderators and they will tell you so. I certainly did not make the rules. And that's WISE ASS, ok? :o

    MBKUDU,

    No pardon necessary.

I really didn't know about the ban on b_r_i_l_ threads. Is there a list of forbidden topics listed somewhere?

As everyone, including PM or moderators, can see, this is a very "talkable" subject, and very much part of recent news. Perhaps the rule should be changed.
