Me and the good lady have at last got some time off work together next week for 3 days........... wanna get out of bangkok for a few days........... any suggestions on somewhere a bit different??? We have done the Hua Hin, pattaya, jomtien, koh chang, krabi bits just wanna get out the city for a bit.

any suggestions are welcome.

Hi all this will be my first bike purchase in thailand.

Its only a second hand scooter but just a couple of questions

Its taxed/insured and has green book.

1. Am i ok to use UK D/licence with International DL??

2. how does the insurance work out here,?? am i right in saying the bike is insured and not the person riding it?? so anybody can ride it?

3. is it best to put it in my name or the thai g/f's name? or dont it make any difference? the guy who is selling it said i need to go to the transport office to do the paperwork?? whats that all about?? and where is the one near sukhumvit??

4. whats the actual law regarding helmets??

5. anything else i should be made aware of?? legal wise??

Hey I appreciate the replies, could you also mention why you are recommending a particular place? I have read a lot of recs for Banyan Tree, is it really that nice? I kind of get the impression it's a little cheesy and pretentious. It looks like the views are really nice, does the atmosphere match?

It's a splurge night so expensive is doable.

Rib Room looks kind of stuffy - I just checked out the website which doesn't have a lot of info from but from the photo it reminded me of the top floor at the Hancock Tower - place for a drink but probably not dinner. Please correct me if I'm wrong! Also it all looked indoors - do they have tables outside?

In my opnion Vertigo is one of the nicest/romantic resaturants in bkk............. but thats my opinion..... the atmosphere is good .......food is good.

Alternatively, there are the boats on the river where you can have a good meal. and have a ride up and down the river.... which is also very nice. .

How long does the Brit Embassy normally take to renew and issue a passport ? Assuming you haven't got 4 already

I have applied for a new one on the 10th June........... got to pick it up on the 24th June (10 working days) 48 page passport 8700 baht

If you are renewing your passport and if anything like the UK if you are going to the embassy in person to renew you do not need to have them certified.

I had the same problem last week and didnt know anybody who could certify my passport photos so i went to the embassy and explained and they said they only need certifying if its a postal application............ going in the embassy in person they do not need certifying.... happy days.

Dont know whether this is of use to you guys but Bar David on soi 22 sukhumvit (the first bar next to the small phamacy by queens park plaza bars) they have 90% of the time fighting (UFC, K1, WEC, kickboxing, boxing) or motorsport (f1 or WRC or WTCC) or football on the screen. When they have a big sporting event on all regular beers are 70 baht!!!!!! or if the bar is busy they will drop the prices for the hel_l of it. Its air conned, has pool and food available!!!!

I have been having a chill out night and reading many threads and posts on TV.

What i would like to know is why, when there is a perfectly respectable discussion going on do you get some jumped up a-hole(s) who obviously hasn't got a clue what he is going on about or disbelieving the OP and butting in and ruining the thread!! There seems to be alot of jealousy about the forum and there seems to be a few ppl on TV not happy with their lives in LOS and try to argue all the time or diss posters for no apparent reason..... it always seems to be the same ppl as well.

I know i don't post a lot on here............ but i do like to read the threads a lot..... some of them are quite interesting..... until the petty arguments start from the know it alls then the original topic goes to shit !!!!

Am i the only one who feels the same???

May seem a dumb question but where is there a macro near sukhumvit??? also do you have to register in the store and get a store card to enter the place as you do in the UK??

Dont do it........... you will be a mug if you do........... unless you can watch them 24/7........... remember they will be only wanting to have money for the next meal........ and not look into the future and stock etc. They will live like kings and queens until the stock has gone then you will have the job of refilling the shop.

A mate of mine did something similar but with a club with the in laws running it........... when ever he not there........ The club is never making any money ......... when he goes there for a couple of weeks the clubs makes GOOD money. They will be skimming the tills until its all gone and they may be unskilled but they be come very skilled at covering there own tracks to make money disappear.

Take the other posters advice and invest in something where they havent got 100 and 1000 baht notes looking at them all day long..... you will live to regret it.

But what............ that is the big question.

Bar David (Vincent Bar that was) is now run by Dave an English Guy from Cornwall. I said I would promote his bar on here for him as it is my "local", its fully air conditioned, got big screen TV and some cracking music.

Dave is a good guy, not in your face at all.

ALL beers from 2.30pm till 8pm are 70 baht and 90 baht after 8pm.

But for all expats he has got a 10% discount card for use at all times. Just ask Dave for one (they are free you just have to give him a biz card to prove your resident/ working in Thailand)

They have got a good pool table and between him and his crew has got some very good pool players!!!

May be of interest to some of the sukhumvit locals.

Its on the main Soi 22 next to the little pharmacy by Family Mart.

As already mentioned sounds like your firewall is blocking the updater......... turn off and update and remember to turn back on when done
