  1. @stevenhb Are you looking to get a new visa or are you actually looking to extend your permission to stay? I ask as the rules will be different. My guess is you are looking to go to your local immigration office to extend your stay here in Thailand by way of being a parent of a child with Thai citizenship, I guess you have done this before so I would imagine you know the documents required. However, one thing that is often missed, even by immigration officials, is there is no requirement to season the funds for such an extension. So long as the required amount of money is in the bank on the date of renewal, it should be fine.

Nope. Not hung up at all. Just trying to enlighten people to facts about the history and different cultures of Isaan and the linguistics attached to such history and cultures. It really is interesting and worthwhile to learn such things about where we live..

Correct answer would be: C. Which one? Nothing about feelings. Only truth and fact. I can speak an Isaan dialect. Not the one spoken in Kalasin. I have visited Kalasin many times. I have also been asked that question. My answer has always been "C" as above. With an explanation the locals soon understand the error of their question.

Your use of a singular pronoun is incorrect. There are many dialects in Issan. Many very different in accent and vocabulary. In the area where I live there are at least five languages spoken in any one day. All within a 20km radius. Also "common vernacular" would suggest a language that not a traditional language. Or one that has not established such standing. Wrong again.

Your comparison does not compare. Your second point is nearer the truth. Isaan could be used to denote a group of dialects. Thus, my comment pointing out that one cannot say "I speak Isaan" is correct. One should specify which language from the region they speak.
  6. Such a sad outlook on life. I sympathise. However, please don't think this is everyone's outlook on life. Some, like me, have a broader spectrum of what they like and what makes them happy. To refer to women as "gash" is demeaning. I thought we had all grown up and embraces some kind of diversity and equality in life. Seems some people haven't. You carry on with your views and low levels of expectancy. At least you will never be disappointed. In the meantime, people like me are experiencing good times in a good, meaningful relationship with a real person whom we married for deeper qualities than you appear to settle for.

It is more likely the most populous region because it is the largest. Isaan is about the same size as England and Wales. Isaan as a region has quite a small population if calculated as population per Km2. In fact, looking at density, Isaan is 4th on the list in Thailand. Beaten by Central, Southern and Eastern regions. That said, I agree with your disagreement of what 2009 writes. Most of it is warped, self opiniated rubbish.

It really depends on your own preferences. One man's " boring" is another man's happy place.

It was not my intention to appear aggressive and I apologize if that is how it seemed. I was just pointing out a mistake that is made often. Not just by expats but by Thais too. Generally it is lack of understanding about history of the area and the cultures. One of the least spoken dialects in Isaan is actually the oldest and pre dates Laos and Khmer by many years. That is Gui. The language of the elephant herders. Spoken in pockets of Buriram, Surin and Sissakhet.

In a similar way to some posters here, it is generally a misconception or lack of understanding. Often because of lack of education of or travel within the region. Laos is the dominant dialect of Isaan, of that there is no doubt. This foes not mean it is the only dialect, as some would think, and therefore should not be confused with the name of the region. The North East of Thailand is known as Issan and the people should referred to as Isaan folk. None of the dialects are named Isaan and should not be.

What you mean to say is "in a Laos speaking area of Isaan". Where I live they ask " yai Khmer rur oi?".

This post totally nullifies what you were attempting to say in your first post. You have totally contradicted yourself. Try to brush up on the history of Isaan and the many different cultures. You will learn that there certainly are definitive meanings to the language names.

    Understanding Isaan

I've lived in rural Isaan for over 20 years. My wife's family have lived in rural Isaan for generations. They are Khmer speakers. That is one of the many Isaan languages. I have also studied local cultures and languages. That is how I know and understand what I wrote, which is correct. To say one speaks "Isaan" is simply incorrect. Nothing to do with being holier, better or anything like that. Just being correct in the fundamentals of local languages. That is all.

    Understanding Isaan

Lack of understanding is particularly evidenced in comments like " I the village where I live they speak Isaan" or " my wife and her family speak Isaan". Isaan is a region, not a language or dialect. There are many dialects in Isaan, all with their own names. Such as Laos ( Often incorrectly referred to as "Isaan"), Khmer, Gui, Thai Korat.........
  15. Work permits will only be issued to the end of the contract, as will the extension of stay based on employment. Also there is a tax implication. To get a new work permit, or to get an existing one extended, you need the tax paid form from the tax office. Those dates will be in line with the contract. When your employment at a school finishes, the school are under obligation to issue you with the correct documents to hand in and cancel your work permit and to cancel your extension of stay. This must be done on the last day of employment. That would be either an agreed date or the last date of your contract. It cannot be a date after end of contract. Iff this is not done the teacher will be on overstay from that date. Many of your posts seem to lean towards schemes that schools run to make extra money, most of which are simply impossible to achieve.
  16. Songkran is in April. If you have a work permit the scheme above does not work.
  17. Depends what type of school. In a Thai government school Thai teachers are well paid. After 15-20 years service they will be earning more than foreign teachers. Add to that the pension, cheap loans, free health care for them and their families, the lower class count per week and the fact that they can leave early and arrive late with no issues, I think they mostly realise they are onto a good thing. Better than their foreign colleagues.
  18. I was replying to your post, not the OP. You said "I cannot find anything about.....". I just pointed out that it is a work permit requirement.
  19. It is a requirement for a work permit. The rules on required salary vary depending on nationality. Teachers are not covered by this rule.
  20. The confusion likely lies in the question of where the budget comes from. Every government school has a budget to cover teaching that cannot be performed by the registered government teachers, whose salary comes directly from the government. Some teachers are hired directly by the school, usually on a one year contract. In the old days when teachers wore military style uniforms on a Monday, the difference between government workers and direct hires was plain to see. The school's annual budget takes care of the direct hire teachers' salaries, including foreigners. There may well be, I'm not sure, a limit that they can cost a teacher from within that budget.
  21. I can't see where he said after school. This is a village school by the sound of it. Village kids will not have 200 baht a head to study English for an hour a week.
  22. However, it has already been mentioned that there is no such budget. Thus, making your comment inane.
