"When I where a lad" we only had a 9600 baud modem..and I remember it taking a whole weekend to download a 100Mb file (partly because some bugger kept picking up the phone and dialing pizza..which killed the internet connection so start again ???? )

There was a time when I bought a Hayes modem in the USA. > $ 200... And two times 4 MB RAM for my 386 cost $ 60 each.

After school, I walked past an IBM shop. Those ATs and XTs cost more than a family sedan with a star on the hood.

Now, I enjoy a cheapo solution: AIS Marathon SIM @ 600 THB for half a year...

Simple really  If you gave him the paperwork to get a work visa contact immigration and cancel it.  As to the teacher let him go and find another.  As you said there are many out there some more highly qualified than the idiot you hired

Huh? You mean cancelling a B-VISA? Good luck with that! (No good deed goes unpunished)

  3. Mmm, many drivers lack a basic understanding of gearboxes. Especially those driving in mountains. Torturing engines as a hobby?

Udon Thani to Chiang Mai. A full bus, on an overnight journey. A winding mountain road. Speeding - and the driver counting money. (Had no camera at hand back then).

When I first arrived, I saw people sitting on the roofs. Break hard and they will get thrown onto the road. Catapulted, gaining the linetic weight of elephants in some cases.

Hey, driving around with red-hot coals on meals side-car motorcycles is a brilliant idea! Have a pick-up truck getting rear-ended and the mob in the bed pelted with those red-hot coals...

I counted over 20 small kids in MHS province. The pickup driver was speeding, of course. Who needs school bbuses with seat belts?!?

I rode a big bike on the 1095 near Pai. Some moron decided to drive in my lane!

Go home, farang. This is my country. I'm Thai and I do as I please.

    Rant over.

In the village where I live, there is no garbage collection (My Old Man doesn't exist) so we must burn some of it in our back garden. But we do it in a concrete pipe lifted off the ground so air can get under the fire, so it's all done in a short time with not much smoke. No alternative.

    Dioxin gets released - - -

  5. So glad that their driving is not as bad  as in Vietnam, YMMV.

    ...

Be prepared for recless disregard ofyour and others' lives when there might be the opportunity to save a few seconds. Running red lights, overtaking into oncoming traffic. (Near PAI, I once had just 1 second to avoid a head-on collision with a pickup truck who pulled into my lane).

Dogs, cats, kids, obstacles, buffalo on a leash spanning half the lane... Riding fast is not a good idea, period.

    U-turns into oncoming traffic!

Passive-aggressive behavior. Creeping into a busy lane.

Not stepping on it, not accellerating hard. Many "THINK" for long seconds after joining a busy road.

  6. This older colleague has personal hygiene issues. The school asked to please change clothes daily, without spelling it out. The kids began taking air freshener into the class rooms.

What would you do? With a view of helping, not humiliating?

Well, I sent a blunt message and suggested soap, water and deodorant.

(There might be deeper psychological issues when an adult lets himself go in such a noticeable way...)

  7. Well, I have been an Indiam all my life but never a chief (administrator, HR, ...). No call, no show has been an issue with foreign teachers losing 2 paid days for this. Just make the call!

A: Since this is a) the probationary period and b) it goes both ways, I doubt you can get compensation. Although this is very bad behavior and will harm teachers following him, no doubt.

My school has added 10 days' wait to reduce such walk-outs after payday. This kinda upsets me and makes me question the legality of that policy.

Stay in touch with hired guys. I would want to know what made them do it?

  8. Wow, all over 8,000 THB!

I have had shocking experiences renting motorcycles from Thai teachers. As a consequence, I would always pay into their bank accounts, ideally getting a Thai friend to send it online with a message. "Honda Wave rent, Jan - May 2019".

(They tried double dipping - demanding rent be paid  a g a i n  after me having prepaid for months! No, they didn't need the money.

    No pay? No stay!

  9. Glad they caught them. (I wonder, where the scammers wanted the money to be sent to? Their own accounts, here in Thailand)?!? Good luck, getting an account frozen in Lagos, Nigeria...

Apart from greed, stupidity and unworldliness, it is extremely cruel to mess with women's hopes and dreams.

A professional colleague from Nigeria recently tried to recruit me to deposit money. No clear details, as usual, but they wanted some European business man to do it "for 20%". => Guess it would be another scam or white-hot money from the friendly folks at BOKO HAREM

Always dreaming & doing bizarre deals. His own savings of $ xx k were invested in some weird "deals", too. Seems for some crooks, it's like playing a part in reality TV.

Another thing he wanted me to do was approach charities for projects. - Yeah, they want to work with unknown middle men, allowing them to mark up prices exorbitantly.. !!

  10. Okay, so they let 11 or 12 year olds ride motorcycles. But train them, please! It sounds like the girl riding that bike couldn't control it!

Had the same experience when I tried to give a fellow student a riding lesson in Cheshire, UK. It was a 100 cc 2-stroke Kawasaki. He crashed it on a straight road! I was riding pillion...

As a teacher, I have seen lots of injured M2 girls. Many teeth knocked out, horrific abrasions, arms and legs resembling a pizza...

Schools should give some training and society needs to either enforce the law or amend it ad allow very young kids to ride with proper training and insurance cover at a much higher rate with parents co-signing etc.

  11. Private employers, government employers. Work permits and waiting to get a WP.

Other countries insure employees from day 1. What is going on here in LoS?

Another issue are tax collections. In 2016, 250 THB were collected for  m o s t  months. No company has done this properly, ever. They avoid tax collections for a few months without fail.

Is this normal, do you have the same experience?

  12. Eat some boiled eggs with soy sauce for taste. 7-11 sells them, too. Big C has 500 grans of raw peanuts. They will fill you up nicely...

Rather than cardio, do resistance training as your muscles may be burning fat for the next day or two!
