  1. Sure they can fire him. anyone can be fired - no reason needed. Instead, there is a certain protocol after an employee survived the first 120 days (probationary period).

The termination has to coincide with the payment cycle. Depending on the length of service, this will be very expensive for the school indeed! TBH, I forgot the data, but it's 5 or 6 months' salary plus payment in lieu of notice period... Bet they haven't counted on him fighting back (or paying that much, if any).

Private school => Labour court. It's free. and there is information on how this works.

All he needs is show up with all the documents he has, maybe in duplicate or triplicate, with each page signed.

They can't claim he had to be fired on the spot, can they?

Labour court is free. They will set an arbitration hearing and the court appointed attorney will argue his case and try really hard to settle this at this stage.

They can dismiss the guy - but it's gonna cost them dearly.

For those who work at a government school, you need to take the school to Administrative Court. There is a 2% fee of what you are claiming payable upfront. and you have to get someone to write the complaint or writ in Thai

  2. I don't thing the new SR will sell a lot of bike in Thailand. There are so many older ones around for a fraction of the price. Granted, they don't have green books, but that's only a problem if you live in Bkk or Pattaya.

Different story in the US and Europe (except Germany perhaps), where lots of people were 'starving'for SR. The old ones were very difficult to find in the US. I personally know of 5 people there who already bought one.

An electric starter on the SR? Aaaarrrgghhh HERESY!!!!

    Seriously, no need for that.

The SR has to stay the way it's always been. The FI is already a big concession to modern times imo.

Yamaha could come up with another retro bike, though, maybe with a nice XS styled engine.

If an Enfield Bullet can have an electric start - then why not an SR?

I'd like to see them bring back the RD350LC (with FI and an electric startbiggrin.png )

Why on earth? The RD 350 would be so easy to kick to life, hot or cold!

I'vemade many people unhappy, 2-stroke smoke billowing out when started cold... I miss the Rd 350, too. Fireworks at 6,000 rpm thumbsup.gif

  3. Well, they have decided not to collect any money from the foreigners. (Have you encountered schidzophrenic vascillations like this before? I sure have! Once I asked "is there a book I need to follow?" A: No book. A few weeks later, the HoD comes in and lambasts me for not using a book. You cannot make some things up.

I was asking whom to pay - but they no longer wanted any payment. Utterly bizarre. But quite typical. We have had long meetings with grand proclamations and then? Nothing, nada!

  4. Hey, what'sup?

Am feeling very foolish right now. A friend with a PhD returned to the U.S. with his family. He's retired and his 50% partner is some owner of many companies over here. Basically, we agreed that I would get their LLC for $ 500 each, which I paid.

No contract. 2 years later, I wonder if they sold me "anice bridge", figuratively speaking. Doubt they even did any paperwork about changing ownership etc.

Does anyone knows the law regarding change of ownership and reporting requirements?

They say they spent some 300 k Baht on their import business. But without any documentation or contract, I feel like some wonnabe Romeo who sent $ 1,000 to some rager bride in Russia. Waiting for her to e-mail again and show up one day.

  5. That was my point not that he cannot get a job for the short term

That's wrong! Why wouldn't someone who went to university for 5 years and has been working as a teacher and translator get 2 x 2 years' waivers?!? Lots of people do, even some do work here without a degree. Just saying.

  6. What is the FMV of land? I've noticed obscene prices in the last few years. Totally unrealistic IMHO.

OTOH, there are people who turn to loan sharks demanding 5% a month. Years later, without loan repayment, they still owe 100% of the principle. That's crazy! They would fare better dumping the land for say 25% FMV than doing that... Try to find a motivated seller who needs cash pdq.

Me, I would buy some REIT in the USA which's paying >8%. UMH maybe - operating mobile home parks. No way would i leave money here for the long term. YMMV, but I certainly would look at options outside of Thailand!

  7. How strange. Why can't the cops just show up with some search and arrest warrant and haul the honorable doctor in for extensive questioning?

What is this pussyfooting around, with warnings and all? Remember the shocking case of the kidnappers who tortured the Karen girl, then the were allowed to leave "on bail" (low bail).

People who kidnap and torture a child don't spend any jail time? Mmm, let me think. Apparently, yes.

What is going on around here?!

  8. Quote: "Of course, the prices here in Thailand are way high, but here too the Bolt has the Sportster 883 beat by 120,000 Baht."

Come on, let's talk again after 2 years riding both bikes. Depreciation will likely have eaten up the 120,000 Baht difference. Moreover, H-D's reliability has improved dramatically more than a decade ago.

Ride both bikes for a decade and then you'd be lucky if you get 165,000 B for the Bolt. And parts prices are pretty reasonable when you order in the U.S.

    Ride on!

  9. Enfield are just opening a branch in Bangkok, many pics on farcebook.

They do have more HP, but I am not sure they are fast than an SR400, anyone ridden both, a new SR and Enfield?

I rode several SRs, but all were made in the 1970s and 1980s and 1990s. The last of the European SR 500s had a weak engine (24 hp? I forgot). Night and day vs the 1978 SR which had grunt.

Even with EFI, forget it if you want a performance bike.

The SR is a beauty and will be good for bimbling along 3rd rate country roads. Would love one - but for less than 200,000 Baht, please.

  10. Well, thinking you won't get a job pdq without an agency. Schools are crying out for NES with a degree. (Disclaimer, if you would work for aout 30 grand. I have no experience with higher paying jobs over here).

One mistake has been to allow a school to sucker you. there are variations of the general theme:

Foreign teacher getspromised a contract on certain terms. 12 months & xx,000 Baht.

    a) Several girls flew in from China and upon arrival, the 'remuneration committee" decided that they could only pay thousands less than the promised amount.

    B) My own '12 months' contract" was changed into a 10 months' contract. (After much soul searching, I decided to stick around and not walk out). Although this has been done according to the school's plan.

    c) Clarify stuff like "personal days", sick leave, paid hols and who pays for the necessary paperwork? B-Visa, WP and the 1,900 B to change the immigration status?

    d) What about health insurance? TBH, I'vebeen asked to pay cash, ad hoc. Bla bla, choose a hospital. Months later, I was hit with a high bill, because the hospital never received the paperwork. (Or payments?). ** It's shameful scams like this which makes it necessary to clarify the small stuff as well.

Yes, someone will likely try and embezzle some monies from your pay check. For example, the monthly matched SS contributions are now 750 at my school. (They used to be 600 B before at the school which never paid the hospital). But to qualify, one needs the WP. Guess what, each month, they have been trying to take out 750 B while the WP is still awaiting some boss's signature. Now the trick question, what do you think would have happened with the money if I had paid up as they requested?!? No way would they have i. passed it on to the SS or ii. refunded it voluntarily backto me.

    ********

Then there is housing.Be prepared to get substandard places with Thai toilet.

When you pay rent for a house or motorcycle, you better transfer the money. (I've had shocking issues after handing over several months' rent in advance. Not sure it it was genuine amnesia or some evil scheme. But you gotta play it safe).

When you see a school, check out the students' toilets. Many have no working wash basins. // Why not ask someone who's been working there?

The level of incompetence and lack of planning is often staggering. You might get hired without being asked a single professional or CV related question. => Your picture matters like hell.

Check out Ajarn.com and trust me, you can pick and choose among those low paying jobs.

  11. Let me elaborate: for the last few months, we have been asked for monthly contributions "to a party". When questioned, drinking water and paper for printing was mentioned, too. the amount used to be 100 B, now it's 200 B. And the collections will be enforced.

The promised "Sports Day shirts for the teachers" never materialized. But some teachers walked around with a list, soliciting payment for shirts. There had been none for yours truly, so the explanation given was it's for the students' shirts. Really? This would be a first. Because when orphans wept openly on the stage on Way Kru Day, none of the monies collected were for those poor orphans. Oh no! xblink.png.pagespeed.ic.AQgCnSOpp_.png

A one-off party? Even 500 B wouldn't be a big deal. But I hate sly schemes with no accounting. Moreover, who is the self-appointed prick who's deciding on other people's contributions for anything?!?

No debate, no vote. Seems to be the Thai style.

Why can't they ask for say 500 B? Buffet lunch, karaoke and booze. Buying some gift with the balance. But it's gonna be 2,400 p.a.with no clear objective what the money will be used for. (There hasn't been drinking water in many moons and the printer's knackered).

    Pay up and <deleted>?

  12. Well, regarding the WP, it would help to get the process started.

To save you both, stress & money, they need to give you the paperwork for a B-Visa. The fee will be 2,000 B. But it will be good for 90 days...

The alternative would cost more IMHO. Lost days at work, stress with being illegal...

When I started working here, schools asked for Visa runs, then got a B-Visa after the first few months and the WP. Does the director have some kind of an outlook as to securing your longer-term employment?

All for just 1-2 months?Forget it. You can get a contract till the end of the school year elsewhere.

    Good luck!

  13. In yesterday's meeting, the HoD reminded all foreign teachers that they must pay 200 B each month.

Personally, I hate the messy financial shenanigans and would rather i.pay when the time comes for a gift and the buffet dinner or whatever will be chosen. ii. We don't really know the guy - and he is way above our pay grade already. iii. Some donation should be made voluntarily. Do you think this is okay, forcing how much someone has to give?!?

TBH, I suspect that not all monies will be used as intended. A bit like the payments "for drinking water" while there has been none the last few weeks... whistling.gif

One school replaced all foreign teachers - choosing an agency for the coming year. No party, no thank you brunch. Nothing, nada. But the customary karaoke night was scheduled so that the Thai teachers can enjoy themselves without having foreigners drink with them and potentially spoil it all. rolleyes.gif.pagespeed.ce.hZ59UWKk-s.gif

  14. Oh, they are good at announcements. They certainly talk the talk. At our Foreign Languages Dept., grand schemes have been designed. Coaches for foreign teachers were appointed etc. pp. Stop waffling, start doing. Walk the walk.

Oh, and the MoE has had nothing do do with the abysmal state of affairs?!? The fish stinks from its head. It's time to sweep with new brooms whistling.gif

  15. You're a teacher and yet you choose to do nothing but post it to a forum on a website? Maybe you should stand up for those who do not have a voice and contact the police.

Well, I was at the Labour Dept. when it happened. The school's response was not what I would have expected. But then, ranks are closed and there is the old "corps spirit"

Seems the only thing that matters is a teacher's standing. NOT the crime.
